A Basset Hound pregnancy is generally close to nine weeks, but a due date calculated from the mating date alone can be off by many days. Canine pregnancies average about 63 days from ovulation. Merck Veterinary Manual reports 64–66 days from the initial progesterone rise or luteinizing-hormone (LH) surge, but 58–72 days from the first mating. The difference exists because mating and conception do not necessarily occur on the same day. No Basset Hound-specific gestation length or breed-specific weekly chart has been established, so the timeline below uses general canine evidence and should be personalized by your veterinarian.

How long are Basset Hounds pregnant?

Use ovulation or hormone timing—not the first mating date—as the better starting point for an estimated delivery date. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine gives an average of approximately 63 days from ovulation. Merck Veterinary Manual lists several ranges because the answer changes with the biological event used as day zero:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Reference point Typical interval How to interpret it
First day of diestrus 56–58 days A reproductive-cycle reference used in veterinary dating.
Initial progesterone rise or LH surge 64–66 days A narrower estimate when ovulation-related hormone testing was performed.
First breeding (mating) 58–72 days A broad interval because breeding may precede or follow ovulation and conception.
Ovulation About 63 days on average Cornell’s general canine average; it is not a promise for an individual dog.

These figures come from general canine guidance, not a measurement unique to Basset Hounds. If the breeding date is all you know, ask your veterinarian to interpret it alongside examination findings and any available reproductive testing rather than treating one calendar date as certain.

The ranges are not contradictory; they use different biological starting points. For example, counting 63 days from ovulation is not the same calculation as counting 63 days from the day a tie or mating was observed. Write down every mating, because more than one breeding can create several possible calendars. Give those dates to the veterinary team rather than choosing the earliest or latest date yourself.

Why the mating date cannot give an exact due date

Sperm can remain capable of fertilization after mating, while ovulation and conception may occur later. Consequently, the first observed mating is an imperfect clock. A veterinarian who tracked progesterone or the LH surge can usually narrow the estimate more effectively than an owner counting from the day of breeding.

When timing is uncertain, plan for a range rather than a single “due date.” Have the whelping area, transportation, and veterinary contact route ready before the earliest reasonable delivery window. If the dog was bred on several days, tell the veterinarian all of them; selecting one date without that context can make a normal pregnancy appear late or early.

Merck Veterinary Manual (2025) describes 56–58 days from the first day of diestrus, 64–66 days from the initial progesterone rise or LH surge, and 58–72 days from first breeding. These reference points explain why a calendar based only on the mating date has a wider margin of error than hormone-based dating.

Basset Hound pregnancy week by week

The following bands are orientation only. They combine general canine reproductive timing with the diagnostic windows described by Merck. They are not a definitive Basset Hound developmental chart, and individual pregnancies can progress differently.

Weeks 1–2: days 1–14

  • Ovulation, fertilization, and early reproductive development occur during this period.
  • The mating date remains an imprecise way to date these events.
  • Most owners should not expect visible signs that can confirm pregnancy at this stage. A normal-looking dog may still be pregnant, and an apparently different dog is not diagnosed by appearance alone.

Continue ordinary care unless your veterinarian has given different instructions, and record every breeding date and any reproductive testing. Those records become useful when your veterinarian estimates timing later. Avoid interpreting appetite, sleep, or mood changes as proof of pregnancy; those observations are nonspecific and can have many causes.

Weeks 3–4: approximately days 15–28

  • Implantation occurs at about day 18 in the general canine timeline.
  • Uterine swellings may be palpable by around day 21 in a cooperative dog, but abdominal palpation is a veterinary examination, not a home test.
  • Depending on timing, a veterinarian may use palpation, a relaxin test, or ultrasound to investigate pregnancy.

An early negative or uncertain result may simply mean that testing was performed before the most informative window. Ask the examining veterinarian how the result fits the suspected ovulation or breeding date instead of repeating an examination or pressing the abdomen yourself. A single early result should not be used to create a new due date without professional interpretation.

Weeks 5–6: approximately days 29–42

  • Ultrasound is particularly useful for determining pregnancy and assessing fetal viability around days 25–35, according to Merck.
  • Routine radiographs may begin to show fetal skeletons at approximately days 42–45.
  • Imaging results should be interpreted with the dog’s actual reproductive dates and physical examination.

Ultrasound and radiography answer different questions. Ultrasound can show whether a pregnancy is present and whether fetuses are viable at the time of the scan; it is not interchangeable with a late-pregnancy litter count. Ask what question each appointment is intended to answer so that a scan performed for viability is not mistaken for a definitive puppy count.

Weeks 7–8: approximately days 43–56

  • Fetal skeletons are generally more visible on radiographs after the early visibility window.
  • Discuss delivery planning with your veterinarian, including where to go if labor is abnormal.
  • Merck identifies imaging after day 55 as the best method for determining litter size.

A late radiograph can help your veterinarian know how many puppies are expected, which makes it easier to recognize whether delivery appears complete. It does not remove the need to monitor the dam or to seek help when labor is not progressing normally. The count is an estimate of expected puppies, not permission to wait if the dog appears ill or distressed.

  • The whelping kit is very suitable for the delivery of kittens and puppies. It contains almost all the tools used to solve the problem of kittens and puppies whelping. You don’t have to choose one by one.
  • 2 x original nipple, 2 x mini nipple, 2 x 1ml syringe, 2 x 5ml syringe, feeding bottle, which are very suited for newborn puppy and kittens.
  • 2 x Whelping Liners Disposable, 1 x Disposable apron Pack, 1 x Stainless plastic handle scissors, 1 x plastic forceps.
  • 1 x 90ml bulb aspirator, 5 x disposable gloves, 1 x capsule tablet pill pusher, Can also be used for feeding baby animals that have not yet begun to eat on their own. 5 x mini reusable cord clamps, 1 x Stethoscope.
  • 5 x mini reusable cord clamps, 1 x Stethoscope, 6 × feeding record cards, 15 × pet identification collars.Helps you better deliver your pet and keep track of what your pet is feeding.

Use this period to confirm who will monitor the dog, where records are stored, and how transport will be handled. A person who is present for labor should know the mating dates, the veterinarian’s estimate, the imaging dates, and the emergency phone number.

Week 9: approximately days 57–65 from ovulation

  • Prepare the whelping location and keep the veterinary contact plan immediately available.
  • A rectal temperature drop often occurs within 8–24 hours before whelping, according to Merck, but the interval is not a precise prediction.
  • Temperature monitoring is one clue among several; it cannot confirm that delivery will begin at a particular hour.

Because a mating-based estimate can span 58–72 days, a dog may be close to delivery even when the calendar seems early or late. Let your veterinarian reconcile the calendar with examination and imaging findings. Record the time and circumstances of any temperature reading consistently, and report concerning changes rather than relying on the reading alone.

How can I tell if my dog is pregnant?

Home observation cannot reliably confirm pregnancy, especially early in the process. Veterinary options are selected according to the suspected stage:

Method Typical timing or use What it can tell you
Abdominal palpation Uterine swellings may be palpable around day 21 in a cooperative dog Findings that may support pregnancy when performed by a veterinarian.
Relaxin testing Used in an appropriate veterinary window Evidence of pregnancy; the veterinarian must interpret an early or uncertain result.
Ultrasound Most useful for determination and viability around days 25–35 Whether pregnancy is present and whether fetuses appear viable during the examination.
Radiography Skeletons visible at about days 42–45; after day 55 is best for litter-size determination Fetal skeleton visibility and, later, an estimate of how many puppies are expected.

Do not attempt to palpate the abdomen at home. Pressing on the abdomen can cause pain or injury and cannot substitute for a trained examination. Also, a test answers only the question it is designed to answer: an ultrasound for viability does not necessarily provide the most reliable litter count, while a late radiograph is chosen primarily for counting visible skeletons.

Nutrition and everyday care during pregnancy

Choose a complete commercial diet with veterinary guidance

Colorado State University Veterinary Health System recommends a high-quality commercial dry food that meets the dog’s nutritional requirements, using either a performance or gestational diet. The appropriate amount and transition plan depend on the individual dog’s body condition, health, pregnancy stage, and veterinary assessment. No Basset Hound-specific calorie schedule was established, so do not copy a fixed feeding chart from another breed.

Ask the veterinarian how to transition between foods and how to monitor body condition during appointments. A complete commercial diet is a category recommendation, not a prescription for one brand, serving size, or calorie target. Keep the food label and feeding history available for the appointment.

Do not add medicines or supplements on your own

Pregnancy changes the safety profile of medications, supplements, dewormers, and other treatments. Ask your veterinarian before starting, stopping, or changing any product. A diet or supplement regimen suitable for one pregnant dog may be inappropriate for another, particularly when the pregnancy date or fetal status is uncertain. Do not assume that an over-the-counter product is safe because it is marketed for dogs.

Keep a written record

  • Record every mating date and any progesterone or LH testing.
  • Save ultrasound and radiograph reports, including the date each was performed.
  • Note your veterinarian’s instructions, emergency phone number, and the clinic or hospital that will receive the dog after hours.
  • Write down temperature observations and the time labor signs begin, if monitoring has been recommended.

These records help the veterinary team judge whether the pregnancy is on schedule and whether the number of puppies delivered appears consistent with the late-pregnancy assessment. They are especially useful when more than one person is caring for the dog.

Preparing a whelping area and emergency plan

Whelping-preparation checklist

  • Set up a quiet, clean location where the dog can be observed without unnecessary disturbance.
  • Keep a digital thermometer suitable for taking the dog’s rectal temperature, as included in American Kennel Club preparation guidance.
  • Write down the regular veterinarian, the emergency clinic, directions, and transportation arrangements.
  • Keep examination and imaging dates accessible for the person monitoring labor.
  • Ask in advance which signs require a phone call and which require immediate transport.
  • Place the dog’s records and the late-pregnancy imaging report where they can be taken quickly.

Temperature monitoring can provide a useful clue, but a drop commonly reported 8–24 hours before whelping is not a guarantee. Do not delay care because the temperature has not fallen, and do not assume delivery is normal solely because it has fallen. A thermometer is a monitoring aid, not a substitute for an examination.

Before labor, confirm whether the emergency clinic is open after hours and how the veterinarian wants you to call. If the primary clinic refers emergencies elsewhere, save that hospital’s address and phone number rather than searching during a crisis.

When is labor an emergency?

Cornell’s guidance is direct: “If you know your dog is having difficulty giving birth (dystocia) or are unsure if things are progressing normally, seek veterinary care immediately.” If labor appears difficult or you cannot tell whether it is progressing normally, call the veterinarian or emergency service at once rather than waiting for the next expected puppy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not give medication intended to increase contractions unless a veterinarian has specifically examined the dog and instructed you to use it. Merck cautions that contraction-stimulating medication is not appropriate without veterinary direction; an obstruction or another cause of dystocia can make unsupervised treatment dangerous.

When you call, provide the best available information: the mating and ovulation-testing dates, the time labor signs began, the time of any puppy’s birth, the number of puppies already delivered, and any imaging-based litter estimate. If you are transporting the dog, take the records and follow the clinic’s instructions. If you are unsure whether a situation qualifies as an emergency, tell the veterinary team exactly what you see and ask for immediate direction rather than trying to classify it at home.

Which pregnancy-dating method is most useful?

Dating approach Precision and limitation Best use
Ovulation or hormone timing Narrower estimate when progesterone or LH timing is known; still an estimate Planning the expected delivery window.
First mating date Broad 58–72-day interval because mating and conception can be separated Providing an initial range when no hormone data exist.
Ultrasound Most useful around days 25–35 for pregnancy determination and viability Confirming pregnancy and evaluating fetuses during that window.
Radiography Skeletons usually visible around days 42–45; after day 55 best for litter size Assessing fetal development and estimating the number of puppies late in pregnancy.

These are complementary veterinary tools, not products that an owner chooses interchangeably. Your veterinarian can select the method and timing that fit the dog’s history and the question that needs answering. If pregnancy timing is unknown, the clinician may combine the history, physical examination, and imaging rather than relying on one test in isolation.

Common owner questions

When do dogs start showing signs of pregnancy?

There is no dependable early visual sign that confirms pregnancy. During the first two weeks, outward appearance should not be used as a diagnostic test. Arrange veterinary evaluation if you need confirmation or if the dog’s health changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When will my dog give birth?

If ovulation was documented, use the veterinarian’s estimate of roughly 63 days from ovulation as a planning reference. If you only know the first mating date, Merck’s 58–72-day range is more appropriate. The range is deliberately broad; contact your veterinarian when the expected window approaches or whenever labor seems abnormal.

Does a Basset Hound have a different gestation length?

No breed-specific duration was established in the available veterinary material. Treat the figures here as general canine guidance, not as a Basset Hound adjustment. A veterinarian should interpret the individual pregnancy.

Can I count puppies by feeling the abdomen?

No. Do not palpate the abdomen at home. A veterinarian may use palpation at an appropriate stage, while late radiography is the best-supported method for estimating litter size after day 55.

Is a temperature drop proof that labor will start immediately?

No. A rectal temperature drop often precedes whelping by 8–24 hours, but it is only a clue and cannot predict the exact start of labor or rule out complications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I do not know the ovulation date?

Give the veterinarian every mating date and any available reproductive records. Use the 58–72-day interval from first breeding only as a broad planning range, and let examination or imaging refine the assessment.

Can an ultrasound tell me exactly how many puppies will be born?

Ultrasound is useful for confirming pregnancy and assessing fetal viability around days 25–35. Merck identifies radiography after day 55 as the best method for litter-size determination, so the two tests should not be treated as interchangeable.

Should I change food as soon as mating occurs?

Do not make a diet change or add supplements solely because mating occurred. Colorado State University Veterinary Health System recommends a high-quality complete commercial dry food, such as a performance or gestational diet, with the individual choice and feeding amount guided by your veterinarian.

What should I do if labor seems abnormal?

Call a veterinarian or emergency service immediately. Cornell advises immediate care when dystocia is known or when an owner is unsure whether labor is progressing normally. Do not administer contraction-stimulating medication without specific veterinary instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Key takeaways for Basset Hound owners

  • Plan around approximately nine weeks and an average of about 63 days from ovulation, not a single mating-date deadline.
  • Use the 58–72-day mating-based interval when ovulation timing is unknown.
  • Ask about ultrasound around days 25–35, radiographic skeleton visibility around days 42–45, and late radiography after day 55 for litter-size assessment.
  • Feed a complete commercial diet selected with veterinary advice, and make no medication or supplement changes without that advice.
  • Prepare a thermometer, whelping area, records, transport, and emergency contacts before week nine.
  • Seek veterinary care immediately for suspected dystocia or whenever you are unsure whether labor is progressing normally.

Only as a broad range. First mating can precede or follow ovulation, so use 58–72 days as an initial interval and ask your veterinarian to refine it with reproductive records and examination.

When is the best time for an ultrasound?

Merck identifies approximately days 25–35 as the most useful window for confirming pregnancy and assessing fetal viability.

When can an X-ray show the puppies?

Fetal skeletons may be visible on routine radiographs around days 42–45. Radiography after day 55 is the best-supported method for estimating litter size.

Is a rectal temperature drop a guaranteed labor warning?

No. A drop often occurs 8–24 hours before whelping, but it is only a clue and cannot predict the exact time of delivery or rule out complications.

What food should a pregnant Basset Hound eat?

Colorado State University Veterinary Health System recommends a high-quality complete commercial dry food, using a performance or gestational diet when appropriate. Your veterinarian should determine the individual food, amount, and transition plan.

When should I call an emergency veterinarian?

Call immediately if you know the dog is having difficulty giving birth or you are unsure whether labor is progressing normally. Do not give medication to increase contractions unless a veterinarian specifically directs you.

The Bottom Line

A Basset Hound pregnancy is usually close to nine weeks, but mating dates alone cannot provide an exact due date. Use veterinary hormone timing when available, plan around the appropriate diagnostic windows, feed a complete commercial diet under veterinary guidance, and seek immediate help for difficult or uncertain labor.
