The clearest differences concern what is being named, body shape, geographic range and habitat, and how size is reported. A southern stingray (Hypanus americanus) is a useful example for comparison, but it does not represent every stingray.
The comparison is not species versus species
The first distinction prevents nearly every other misunderstanding. The bat ray is a particular species: Myliobatis californica. California’s Department of Fish and Game described it in its 2008 California’s Marine Living Resources: A Status Report as a heavy-bodied eagle ray with a distinct thick head and a long, whip-like tail.

“Stingray,” by contrast, is a common name applied to many species across several ray lineages. Those animals can differ substantially in silhouette, maximum size, color, preferred habitat and range. Asking whether a bat ray is bigger than “a stingray,” or whether it lives in the same place as “a stingray,” leaves out the species needed for a fair comparison.

For a concrete example, this article uses the southern stingray, Hypanus americanus, whose profile from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) describes a western Atlantic animal. Statements about that species are labeled as such; they should not be read as universal traits of all stingrays.

At a glance: the four key differences
| Question | Bat ray | Stingray comparison | What the difference means |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is it? | Myliobatis californica, one named species and a heavy-bodied eagle ray. | “Stingray” is a broad common name covering many species. | The terms are not mutually exclusive taxonomic categories. |
| What does it look like? | Thick, distinct head; long whip-like tail. | The southern stingray has a broad angular disc, a tail spine near the base of a long whip-like tail and a well-developed dark ventral tail fold. | The southern stingray is one example; other stingrays may look different. |
| Where does it live? | Northern Oregon to the Gulf of California; usually shallower than 164 feet (50 meters), including bays, sloughs, rocky reefs and kelp forests. | Southern stingrays occur in western Atlantic coastal waters, including beaches, bays, estuaries and river mouths. | This is a contrast between two named species, not a range map for every stingray. |
| How large can it get? | Females have a reported maximum disc width of 6 feet (1.8 meters). | The National Park Service gives a broad “up to 6.5 feet” stingray wingspan figure without identifying a species or equivalent measuring method. | The figures are not a controlled, like-for-like size comparison. |
Difference 1: classification and the meaning of the names
Bat ray is a species name
Myliobatis californica identifies a particular animal with a defined scientific name. “Bat ray” is its established common name, and the California report places it among the eagle rays. When a person says “bat ray,” the subject is therefore much narrower than when someone says “stingray.”
The name also gives a practical advantage in reading wildlife information: a report about bat-ray depth, reproduction or maximum width can be tied to that species rather than assumed to describe every ray with a stinging spine.
Stingray is a category-level common name
Common names are useful in conversation but do not map one-to-one to scientific classification. “Stingray” can refer to numerous species, and a field guide or agency profile normally has to identify which one before its measurements and distribution are meaningful. A southern stingray profile, for example, cannot establish the habitat of a bat ray or of an unrelated stingray elsewhere in the world.
That is why “bat ray versus stingray” is not a contest between two parallel groups. A more precise question is “How does the bat ray compare with which stingray?” The answer below uses the southern stingray only where a named comparator is needed.
Difference 2: body shape and visible features
Bat ray: a thick head and a whip-like tail
The California fisheries report’s defining description is a heavy-bodied eagle ray with a distinct, thick head and a long, whip-like tail. Those features give the bat ray a substantial front end rather than a uniformly thin leading edge. The tail extends well behind the disc and carries a sting-bearing spine.

“Bat” in the common name is not a statement that the animal is related to flying mammals. It is a visual label for the ray’s wing-like outline. The reliable identification information in the cited report is the combination of the heavy body, distinct head and tail, not the name alone.
Southern stingray: an angular disc and a tail fold
The FWC profile of the southern stingray describes a broad, angular disc. It places a spine near the base of the long whip-like tail and notes a well-developed dark fold on the underside of the tail. These are useful features when the animal being considered is specifically Hypanus americanus.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is some obvious overlap: both examples have broad pectoral discs and long tails, and both can carry a defensive spine. A quick glance at a distant animal is therefore not always enough. The southern stingray’s angular disc and dark ventral tail fold should be weighed together with location, while the bat ray’s thick head is a more useful clue when the animal is in the bat ray’s known Pacific range.
Why silhouette alone can mislead
“Stingray” includes species with different disc outlines and proportions. Treating the southern stingray’s shape as the standard stingray shape can lead to a false identification, especially outside the western Atlantic. Color, lighting, viewing angle and whether the animal is resting on the bottom can also obscure the features described in an agency profile.
Difference 3: range and habitat
Bat ray distribution in the eastern Pacific
The 2008 California Department of Fish and Game report places bat rays from northern Oregon south to the Gulf of California. It says they are usually found shallower than 164 feet (50 meters). Within that broad coastal span, the report lists bays, sloughs, rocky reefs and kelp forests as habitats.

This combination of latitude, depth and habitat is useful for narrowing an identification. A ray seen in a shallow Pacific bay or among kelp on the west coast of North America could fit the bat-ray account, although a location by itself does not prove the species.
Southern stingray distribution in the western Atlantic
The FWC southern stingray profile places that species in western Atlantic coastal waters. Its listed settings include beaches, bays, estuaries and river mouths. Those habitats may sound familiar because they are also shallow coastal environments, but the geographic basin is different from the bat ray’s reported Pacific range.
The contrast is therefore between Myliobatis californica and Hypanus americanus, not between one animal and every animal called a stingray. Other stingray species occupy other coastlines, depths and environments. A “stingray habitat” without a species name is too imprecise for a dependable range statement.
Using location correctly
- Start with the ocean basin: the bat-ray report concerns the eastern Pacific; the southern stingray profile concerns the western Atlantic.
- Check the setting: bays, estuaries, beaches, reefs and kelp forests can overlap as habitat types, so the habitat label must be combined with geography.
- Use depth as supporting evidence: the bat-ray report’s usual depth is shallower than 164 feet (50 meters), but that is not an absolute boundary or a substitute for species identification.
Difference 4: size and why the numbers cannot be compared directly
The bat-ray figure
The California report gives a maximum disc width of 6 feet (1.8 meters) for female bat rays. “Maximum” matters: it describes the largest value reported in that account, not the size a typical adult reaches. It also specifies females and measures disc width, the span across the body’s wing-like disc.
The broad stingray figure
The National Park Service gives a general stingray wingspan figure of up to 6.5 feet. Its summary does not identify the species behind that number or establish that the measurement was collected in the same way as the bat-ray figure. It should therefore be treated as a broad educational maximum, not as a species-level statistic for comparison with female bat rays.

What a fair conclusion looks like
The available figures do not prove that stingrays as a group are larger than bat rays, or that bat rays are larger than stingrays. One number is a species-specific maximum disc width for females; the other is an unspecified, category-level wingspan maximum. Without matching species, sex, measurement point and source method, a ranking would create false precision.
When reading a size claim, check four details: the named species, whether the value is typical or maximum, the sex or age class, and whether the measurement is disc width, wingspan or another dimension. Those details often explain apparently conflicting numbers.

What bat rays eat
Bat rays feed on bottom-dwelling invertebrates. The California report lists abalone, clams, snails, shrimp, crabs, worms, sea cucumbers and brittle stars, and says they occasionally take small bony fish.
What southern stingrays eat
The FWC southern stingray profile identifies bivalves and marine worms as main foods, with shrimp, crabs and small fishes also taken. That list overlaps the bat ray’s diet in several categories, particularly shellfish, worms, crustaceans and small fish.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy feeding does not settle an identification
Shared prey reflects the fact that both animals forage near the seafloor; it does not provide a quick visual test. An observer usually cannot identify a ray by seeing it feed, and the presence of clams, crabs or worms in an area does not establish which ray species is present. Use diet as natural-history context after geography and body form, not as the primary field mark.

Tail spines, defensive behavior and safe observation
A spine is a defense, not evidence of aggression
The bat ray has a whip-like tail with a sting-bearing spine. The FWC southern stingray profile places that species’ spine near the base of its long tail and characterizes it as defensive. The presence of a spine should not be converted into a claim that the animal is aggressive or seeks out people.
Because a tail can move quickly when a ray is startled or handled, the safest approach is to leave the animal alone. Do not attempt to pick up, restrain or touch a ray for a closer look. A photograph taken from a respectful distance is safer and more useful than handling an animal whose species may not even be known.
The “Stingray Shuffle” in shallow water
FWC recommends the “Stingray Shuffle” to reduce the chance of stepping on a stingray in shallow water: move your feet along the bottom rather than taking normal lifting steps. The motion alerts a ray to your approach and lowers the likelihood of planting a foot directly on an animal resting under the sand. This is a precaution for people entering shallow coastal water, not a method for identifying a bat ray or southern stingray.

- Keep hands, feet and pets away from the animal and its tail.
- Give it an unobstructed route away from you; do not corner it against a beach, pool wall or boat.
- In shallow water, use the shuffle technique instead of stamping or kicking.
- Follow local beach, aquarium or wildlife-agency instructions if an animal is stranded or injured.
Bat-ray reproduction: species-specific facts
The California report gives a gestation period of 9 to 12 months for bat rays. It reports litter sizes from two pups in smaller females to as many as 12 pups in larger females. These figures describe bat rays specifically; they should not be generalized to all stingray species, whose reproductive timing and litter sizes can differ.
The relationship between female size and litter size is also important. “Two to 12 pups” is a range tied to the size categories in that report, not a promise that every bat-ray pregnancy produces a midpoint number. As with the size statistic, the source and species must stay attached to the figure when it is quoted.
How to work through an identification without overclaiming
- Record the location first. Note the ocean basin, country or coast, and whether the animal is in a bay, estuary, beach zone, reef or kelp habitat.
- Estimate the setting and depth. A shallow eastern-Pacific site fits the bat-ray report better than a deep offshore observation, while a western-Atlantic estuary may fit the southern-stingray profile.
- Look at the front of the body. A conspicuously thick, distinct head supports the bat-ray description. Do not force that feature onto every stingray.
- Examine the disc outline. An angular disc is a listed southern-stingray feature, but disc shape varies among stingray species.
- Observe the tail without approaching. Both examples have long tails and defensive spines. Tail details help only when combined with the other clues.
- Compare the observation with a species-level source. Use an identification guide or wildlife-agency profile that covers the coast where the animal was seen; a generic “stingray” picture may represent the wrong species.
- Report uncertainty honestly. If the view, image or location is insufficient, call it an unidentified ray rather than assigning a species from one overlapping feature.
Common mistakes to avoid
- “A bat ray is not a stingray.” This treats a species name and a broad common name as mutually exclusive categories. The accurate statement is that a bat ray is a particular ray, while “stingray” is a broad label.
- “All stingrays look like southern stingrays.” The southern stingray is one western-Atlantic example, not a template for every species called a stingray.
- “The 6.5-foot figure proves stingrays are larger.” The National Park Service figure is broad and not species-specific, while the bat-ray figure is a female maximum disc width from a named species.
- “Their diets distinguish them immediately.” The prey lists overlap too much for feeding behavior to function as a quick field mark.
- “A spine means the animal is aggressive.” The cited profiles describe the spine as defensive. Avoid handling and give the ray space.
- “A location alone identifies the ray.” Geography narrows possibilities, but species-level identification still requires body features and an appropriate regional reference.
What the evidence supports
The strongest answer is a definition before it is a measurement. A bat ray means Myliobatis californica, a heavy-bodied eagle ray reported from the eastern Pacific coast from northern Oregon to the Gulf of California, usually in water shallower than 164 feet (50 meters). “Stingray” names a much broader set of animals. The southern stingray provides a clear western-Atlantic comparison with an angular disc, a basal tail spine and a dark ventral tail fold, but it is only one species.
Once the names are made precise, the four differences fall into place: classification tells you what is being compared; body shape supplies visible clues; range and habitat establish geographic context; and size figures must be read with their measurement and source limitations. Diet, defensive spines and bat-ray reproduction add useful natural history, but none replaces a species-level identification.
