Baytril is the brand name for enrofloxacin, a prescription fluoroquinolone antibiotic. In the current United States tablet label, it is used in cats for certain skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria—not for viral illness or every type of infection. Because cats can develop serious eye toxicity, the prescribing veterinarian must select the drug, dose, formulation, and monitoring plan for the individual patient.
What Baytril is and when veterinarians use it
Baytril (enrofloxacin) is an antibacterial medicine in the fluoroquinolone class. The current US Baytril Taste Tabs label indicates treatment of diseases associated with bacteria susceptible to enrofloxacin in dogs and cats. Its specific established feline efficacy statement concerns dermal infections—wounds and abscesses—associated with susceptible Pasteurella multocida, Staphylococcus aureus, or Staphylococcus epidermidis. Read the full FDA-approved Baytril label on DailyMed for the official indication.

Whether an infection is susceptible cannot be determined from the appearance of a wound alone. A veterinarian considers the infection site, examination findings, previous treatment, and any laboratory information available. Enrofloxacin does not treat viruses, and using an antibiotic when the causative organism is not susceptible can delay effective care and expose a cat to avoidable adverse effects.
Baytril tablets are restricted by federal law to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. Product names, approved uses, tablet formulations, and prescribing rules can differ outside the United States, so a US-label dose should not be transferred to another country or formulation without veterinary confirmation.

What is the labeled Baytril dose for cats?
For the current US tablet label, the feline regimen is 5 mg of enrofloxacin per kilogram of body weight per day, equivalent to 2.27 mg per pound per day. The veterinarian may prescribe the total daily amount once daily or divide it into two equal doses given 12 hours apart.
| Label instruction | What it means |
|---|---|
| Daily amount | 5 mg/kg/day (2.27 mg/lb/day) of enrofloxacin |
| How often | Either one daily administration or two equal administrations 12 hours apart |
| Maximum | Do not exceed 5 mg/kg/day in cats |
| How long | Continue at least 2–3 days after clinical signs stop, but no longer than 30 days |
The exact tablet number depends on the cat’s measured weight and the strength and formulation supplied. Do not convert the table into a home-calculated dose, substitute a different enrofloxacin product, or change the interval on your own. The label specifically instructs that Taste Tabs should be pilled in cats; ask the prescribing clinic to demonstrate its preferred technique and what to do if a dose is spit out or missed.
Give the course for the duration your veterinarian prescribed. Stopping early because a wound looks better, extending treatment beyond the planned course, or giving extra tablets to compensate for a missed dose can all create problems; obtain individualized instructions from the prescribing veterinarian instead.

Why the 5 mg/kg limit matters: retinal toxicity
The most important feline warning is possible damage to the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. The label reports rare post-approval cases associated with mydriasis (dilated pupils), retinal degeneration—including retinal atrophy and attenuated retinal vessels—and loss of vision. These are voluntary reports collected after approval, not a controlled incidence study, so the available label does not provide a percentage risk or a denominator from which to calculate one.
“Do not exceed 5 mg/kg of body weight per day in cats.”
Mydriasis can indicate an impending or existing retinal change. A cat may not show obvious discomfort even when vision is deteriorating, so a newly enlarged pupil, difficulty navigating, bumping into objects, hesitation on stairs, or an unusual response to light warrants prompt contact with the prescribing veterinarian. If vision appears to change suddenly, treat it as an urgent veterinary concern rather than waiting for the next routine appointment.

What the FDA ocular-safety study showed—and what it did not show
The dose cap reflects a history of post-approval monitoring and a controlled safety study summarized by the US Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine. After a 1997 supplemental approval had allowed 5–20 mg/kg daily, reports of blindness associated with Baytril tablets in cats led to additional evaluation and a later label change returning the feline dose to 5 mg/kg/day. The FDA Freedom of Information summary describes the study.
| Study feature | Published detail |
|---|---|
| Animals | 32 cats, six to eight months old; eight cats in each dose group |
| Doses | 0 (control), 5, 20, or 50 mg/kg/day orally |
| Duration | 21 consecutive days |
| Findings at 5 mg/kg/day | Normal ophthalmic examinations and no electroretinogram abnormalities during the study |
| Findings at higher doses | Ocular abnormalities were observed in the 20 and 50 mg/kg/day groups |
This was a small, controlled study in young cats, not proof that an individual cat has zero risk at the labeled dose. It helps explain why exceeding 5 mg/kg/day is unacceptable, while post-approval reports show that adverse events still need to be taken seriously at any prescribed dose. Separately, the current label reports no drug-related side effects in 124 cats treated at 5.0 mg/kg/day for 10 days in clinical field studies. That field-study figure describes those cats and that treatment period; it is not an estimate of the frequency of every possible adverse event in all cats.

| Category | Examples reported on the label | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Eye and vision | Dilated pupils, retinal degeneration, loss of vision | Seek prompt veterinary advice; sudden visual difficulty is urgent |
| Gastrointestinal | Vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, elevated liver enzymes | Call the prescribing clinic, especially if eating or hydration declines |
| Neurologic | Ataxia (unsteady movement), seizures | Report immediately; a seizure or severe incoordination needs urgent care |
| Behavioral | Depression, lethargy, vocalization, aggression | Notify the veterinarian so the sign can be assessed in context |
These categories come from post-approval reports and do not establish how often each event occurs. Do not independently stop, restart, split, or increase the medicine in response to a symptom; the veterinarian who prescribed it should decide the safest next step.

Quinolone hypersensitivity
Enrofloxacin is contraindicated in cats known to be hypersensitive to quinolones. Tell the veterinarian about any previous reaction to enrofloxacin or another quinolone before the first dose.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNeurologic disease
The label urges caution in cats with known or suspected central nervous system disorders because quinolones have rarely been associated with central nervous system stimulation that may lead to convulsive seizures. A history of seizures or unexplained neurologic episodes should be part of the prescribing discussion.

Minerals and other medicines
Metal cations—including aluminum, calcium, iron, and magnesium—can reduce absorption of some quinolones. Medicines metabolized by the liver may also affect enrofloxacin clearance. Give the veterinarian a complete list of prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, supplements, antacids, and mineral preparations. Do not create your own separation schedule; the clinic should determine whether a product needs to be withheld, timed differently, or replaced.
Pregnancy and breeding
Safety in breeding or pregnant cats has not been established. Tell the veterinarian if a cat is pregnant, may be pregnant, or is intended for breeding so the risk-benefit decision can account for that uncertainty.
How to administer Baytril safely at home
- Verify the label before the first dose. Check the cat’s name, tablet strength, prescribed amount, frequency, and stop date with the dispensing clinic. The label’s maximum is 5 mg/kg/day; never infer that a dog instruction also applies to a cat.
- Use the prescribed formulation. Baytril Taste Tabs are labeled for pilling in cats. If the cat refuses the tablet, ask the veterinarian or veterinary nurse for a demonstrated method rather than crushing, mixing, or substituting a product without approval.
- Keep a dose log. Record each administration and any vomiting, appetite change, behavior change, pupil enlargement, or vision concern. A log helps the veterinarian distinguish a missed dose from a possible adverse reaction.
- Check before adding anything else. Confirm every supplement, antacid, mineral product, and medicine with the clinic because absorption or clearance can be affected.
- Escalate warning signs. Contact the prescribing veterinarian promptly for concerning changes, and seek urgent veterinary care for apparent vision loss, a seizure, severe incoordination, or a rapidly worsening condition.
Questions to ask before your cat starts treatment
- What infection is being treated, and which bacteria are believed or shown to be susceptible?
- What is the exact enrofloxacin amount in milligrams, how often should it be given, and what is the final date?
- Which eye, neurologic, gastrointestinal, or behavioral signs should trigger an immediate call?
- Could any current medicine, supplement, antacid, or mineral product interact?
- What is the plan if the cat spits out a tablet, vomits after dosing, or misses a dose?
- Does the cat’s age, seizure history, pregnancy status, or another illness change the risk-benefit assessment?
How this information applies to different products and countries
The dosing and warnings above are for the US Baytril tablet labeling available on DailyMed, whose page was updated May 7, 2026. Other enrofloxacin products, strengths, flavored tablets, injectable forms, and country-specific labels may have different instructions. The US Enrosite enrofloxacin label corroborates class information but does not replace the Baytril label for a Baytril prescription. Follow the package dispensed for your cat and the veterinarian’s written directions.

Baytril can be appropriate when a veterinarian determines that a cat’s infection is caused by bacteria susceptible to enrofloxacin and that the expected benefit outweighs the risks. For the current US tablet label, the cat dose is 5 mg/kg/day, never higher, for the prescribed duration and no more than 30 days. The reason for the strict ceiling is the recognized risk of retinal toxicity and vision loss. Give the medicine exactly as directed, disclose every other product the cat receives, and contact the prescribing veterinarian quickly about dilated pupils, visual difficulty, seizures, severe unsteadiness, appetite loss, vomiting, diarrhea, or marked behavior changes.
