Be More Bird review: Candida Meyrick’s hawk memoir, weighed

Candida Meyrick’s Be More Bird combines a family’s falconry story with reflections on trauma, parenting and freedom. Its vivid nature writing is balanced by reviewers’ concerns about anthropomorphic life lessons and platitudes.

Be More Bird: Life Lessons from a Hawk is most convincing when Candida Meyrick stays close to a real bird: a Harris hawk named Sophia Houdini Whitewing, usually called Bird. The memoir follows a family learning falconry, caring for Bird and responding to her flight, hunting and injury. It is less persuasive when every encounter is converted into a portable lesson for human life.

That split explains the book’s divided reception. Publishers Weekly praised its descriptions and insight, while The Guardian objected to the way the “life lessons” can overwrite the hawk’s physical reality. Kirkus found the audiobook lively and informative but too fond of platitudes; a review in 10,000 Birds admired Meyrick’s prose and her meditation on falconry. Readers who want nature writing braided with memoir may find a thoughtful, unusual book here. Readers looking for a strictly observed account of raptor behavior may become impatient with the allegory.

What is Be More Bird about?

The publisher describes Be More Bird as a memoir about Candida Meyrick, her family and the Harris hawk they take in at 12 weeks old. The bird’s formal name is Sophia Houdini Whitewing; the family calls her Bird. Learning to handle and train her becomes the book’s practical and emotional spine.

Publishers Weekly’s synopsis places the early falconry lessons in Scotland. Meyrick and her son learn the discipline, acquire Bird and then care for and train her in Wales. The account therefore moves between places as well as between roles: parent and child, novice and handler, writer and observer. Bird is not a decorative symbol introduced for a single anecdote; she is the continuing responsibility around which the family’s days are organized.

The same synopsis says Bird’s recovery from an injury prompts Meyrick to consider her own trauma, including cancer. That connection gives the memoir its most personal stakes. A damaged hawk requires attention, patience and a changed routine; Meyrick uses that experience to examine vulnerability, motherhood and writing. Those are the reviewer’s descriptions of the book’s arc, rather than claims that Bird literally communicates human advice.

How the falconry story carries the memoir

A living animal, not a narrative device

Bird’s value to the story lies in her unpredictability and material needs. The publisher highlights hunting and flight, while the reviews note details of the hawk’s behavior. Falconry imposes a relationship in which affection cannot replace competence: the family must learn how to care for a powerful bird and how to read what she does. That tension gives the memoir a stronger foundation than a collection of inspirational observations would have on its own.

The account also offers a family narrative. Meyrick and her son take lessons together, so learning falconry becomes a form of parenting as well as an outdoor practice. The adult is not simply teaching the child; both are being tested by an animal whose welfare depends on their attention. This shared apprenticeship lets the book examine authority, dependence and the awkwardness of learning in public.

Scotland, Wales and the change of setting

According to Publishers Weekly, the lessons begin in Scotland and Bird is later cared for and trained in Wales. The geographic change matters because it marks a move from instruction to daily responsibility. A class can introduce techniques; living with a hawk reveals whether those techniques survive weather, injury, fatigue and family obligations. The Welsh portion, as described by the reviewer, is where the memoir’s practical and autobiographical strands most directly meet.

Injury as the emotional hinge

Bird’s injury supplies the book’s clearest test of its central metaphor. Meyrick’s reflections on cancer and other trauma arise from watching the hawk recover, not from an abstract discussion of resilience. The parallel can be affecting because it begins with care: an animal is hurt, a family must respond, and the experience changes how the author thinks about her own body and history. It can also feel too neatly arranged if the hawk’s suffering is treated mainly as evidence for a human conclusion.

The book’s main ideas

Resilience and recovery

The publisher presents Bird’s hunting, flight and recovery as prompts to think about resilience. In the strongest version of that approach, the hawk does not “teach” a slogan; her recovery forces Meyrick to notice time, limits and the work required to regain ability. The memoir’s personal material—especially the reference to cancer in Publishers Weekly’s synopsis—gives those reflections weight.

Freedom and dependence

A hawk associated with flight naturally raises questions about freedom, but falconry complicates the idea. Bird’s life with the family is based on training, care and a negotiated relationship. Meyrick can write about wanting freedom while also acknowledging that a captive or managed bird depends on human skill. That contradiction is more interesting than a simple claim that people should imitate birds.

Parenting and self-discovery

The son’s presence makes the book a family memoir rather than a solitary nature diary. Lessons in falconry become lessons in patience, risk and responsibility, with the parent-child relationship changing as both learn. The publisher specifically connects the narrative to motherhood and self-discovery. These themes are credible because they arise from a shared practice with consequences, not merely from a list of affirmations.

The natural world versus human interpretation

The central question is whether Bird remains a hawk in the reader’s mind or becomes a screen for human concerns. Meyrick’s project depends on interpretation: she wants flight and hunting to illuminate a life. Kathryn Hughes’s Guardian review argues that the method can displace the bird’s physical life by attributing wisdom to her. That criticism identifies the book’s governing risk, not a minor stylistic quibble.

What works best

Descriptions that keep the prose grounded

Publishers Weekly calls the book “Rich in description and insight, this soars.” The praise points to the combination of sensory writing and reflection. When description leads, the reader can see why Bird’s actions matter before being told what they symbolize. The review in 10,000 Birds, published September 7, 2026, likewise praises Meyrick’s prose and calls the book an engaging meditation on the hawk and falconry.

A distinctive memoir premise

Many personal nature books begin with a landscape or a solitary walk. Be More Bird begins with an unusual obligation: a family brings home a young Harris hawk and must learn a specialized practice. That premise gives the memoir a built-in plot and prevents the reflections from floating entirely free of events.

Personal stakes beyond inspiration

The references to cancer, trauma and motherhood make the book more than a primer on falconry. Meyrick is using Bird to revisit difficult experiences, and the injury narrative gives that process a concrete trigger. Readers who respond to memoir as a form of meaning-making may find the emotional movement compelling even when they disagree with the conclusions.

An accessible audio performance

Kirkus reviewed a Blackstone Audio edition narrated by Meyrick and lists a runtime of 3 hours and 32 minutes. The review calls the narration lively and says the audiobook informs and entertains. Hearing the author deliver her own reflections may suit listeners who enjoy conversational memoir, although Kirkus also warns that the recording contains too many platitudes.

Where the “life lessons” approach falters

Anthropomorphism can crowd out observation

Hughes’s Guardian review is sharply critical of the book’s premise that Bird offers generalized wisdom. The objection is not that a writer may learn from an animal; it is that the animal’s hunting, movement and behavior can be subordinated to a human moral. If every flight becomes a lesson about courage and every setback a lesson about perseverance, the hawk risks disappearing behind the person interpreting her.

That concern is especially important for animal readers. A Harris hawk does not need to resemble a human teacher to be interesting. The physical facts of falconry—what Bird does, how the family responds and what care requires—already provide meaning. The more confidently the prose assigns motives or revelations to Bird, the more carefully a reader should distinguish observed behavior from Meyrick’s imaginative response.

Twenty brief lessons may feel programmatic

Hughes identifies 20 brief lessons in the book. A numbered structure can make a memoir easy to dip into, but it can also flatten experiences that are more ambiguous than a maxim allows. The format invites the reader to ask whether each lesson grows from the narrative or has been fitted to it afterward.

Platitudes weaken otherwise earned emotion

Kirkus’s audiobook review reaches a similar conclusion in different terms, praising the performance while finding too many platitudes. Meyrick’s own self-criticism, quoted within Hughes’s review, acknowledges the problem: “Bird’s revelations elude me. I grasp at them, hating the rising phrases, pretentious, unwieldy – not what I mean at all.” This is useful evidence of the book’s tension. The author recognizes that a sentence can sound profound while failing to capture what she actually observed.

Readers should therefore expect unevenness rather than a uniformly lyrical meditation. The falconry episodes and personal disclosures may feel earned; the transitions into universal advice may feel manufactured. Whether that imbalance is tolerable will depend on how much interpretive framing a reader wants from a nature memoir.

How critics disagree

Source Date or edition Emphasis What it means for a reader
Publisher description Greystone Books listing Memoir of taking in Bird, learning falconry, and reflecting on resilience, freedom, self-discovery, parenting and nature Sets out the book’s intended blend of animal narrative and personal reflection
Publishers Weekly Listing and review Scotland lessons, Bird’s care and training in Wales, injury, trauma and motherhood; “Rich in description and insight, this soars.” Suggests the memoir’s descriptive and emotional elements are its strengths
Kathryn Hughes, The Guardian January 19, 2026 Questions the “life lessons,” human-like wisdom attributed to Bird, and the displacement of physical animal life; notes 20 brief lessons Warns readers who dislike overt anthropomorphism or inspirational framing
10,000 Birds September 7, 2026 Praises Meyrick’s prose and calls the book an engaging meditation on hawk and falconry Supports the case for reading it as nature writing as well as memoir
Kirkus, audiobook review Blackstone Audio edition Calls Meyrick’s narration lively, informative and entertaining, while noting too many platitudes Audio is a viable format, but the same stylistic weakness remains

These responses are not contradictory about the basic subject. They disagree about emphasis. One reader may experience the reflections as the point of the book; another may see them as interruptions in a more compelling falconry story. The fairest expectation is a hybrid memoir whose success varies with the balance between close observation and moral interpretation.

Who is most likely to enjoy it?

Good match

  • Readers who like memoirs built around a demanding relationship with an animal.
  • People curious about falconry as a family practice rather than a purely technical subject.
  • Nature-writing readers who welcome personal reflection alongside descriptions of hunting and flight.
  • Listeners who prefer author-narrated memoir and can accept a compact 3-hour-32-minute audio edition.
  • Readers interested in how illness, parenting and recovery shape an outdoor life.

Possible mismatch

  • Readers seeking a field guide, scientific study or detailed manual of Harris hawk care.
  • Anyone who dislikes anthropomorphism or generalized inspirational lessons in animal writing.
  • Those who want a consistently restrained style without aphorisms or motivational turns.
  • Readers expecting a long book: the listed hardcover and paperback editions are 192 pages, and the audiobook is under four hours.

Final assessment

Be More Bird has a strong subject and a genuine emotional engine. A young Harris hawk enters a family’s life, demands new skills and becomes part of Meyrick’s thinking about trauma, motherhood, freedom and recovery. The falconry material gives the memoir shape; the injury and cancer reflections give it personal consequence.

Its limitation is inseparable from its ambition. By turning Bird into a source of life lessons, Meyrick sometimes asks the hawk to carry more symbolic meaning than the observed animal can support. The Guardian’s criticism and Kirkus’s note about platitudes identify the same pressure from different angles, while Publishers Weekly and 10,000 Birds show why many readers will still respond to the prose and the unusual premise.

The best way to approach the book is as a hybrid: part family memoir, part falconry narrative, part meditation on recovery. Expect vivid encounters with Bird and thoughtful personal disclosure, but also expect moments when the interpretation becomes more prominent than the bird. For readers comfortable with that trade-off, Be More Bird offers an engaging, sometimes uneasy conversation between human meaning and animal life.
