There is no universal basking-bulb wattage for every bearded dragon. Use wattage only as a starting estimate, then set the lamp over one end of the enclosure and measure the actual basking surface and cool side. Enclosure dimensions and height, room temperature, lamp-to-basking distance, bulb and fixture type, mesh or barriers, and thermostat output all change the result. A correctly adjusted setup gives your dragon a warm basking zone and a genuinely cooler retreat.
What wattage should you start with?
Published husbandry guidance gives a range rather than one answer. The RSPCA UK uses a 60–100 W light-bulb example for producing a hot end of 38–42°C (100.4–107.6°F), with a cool end of 22–26°C (71.6–78.8°F). ReptiFiles gives a 90–100 W example for either a 4 × 2 × 4 ft or 6 × 2 × 2 ft enclosure. Those figures are setup-specific starting points, not a promise that either wattage will work in your room.

The University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine does not prescribe one wattage. It advises selecting the wattage that provides the proper tank temperature and placing the heat lamp over one end to create a gradient. Its example targets are an 88–95°F basking spot and an 80–85°F daytime tank temperature. Because these published targets use different terms and measurement points, choose one husbandry framework and follow its definitions rather than blending the ranges into a single “correct” number.

Starting-wattage chart
Use this chart to choose a first trial. Every value is an estimate tied to the named source and context. “Not stated” means the source did not establish a comparable figure.
| Source and context | Starting wattage or lamp guidance | Temperature guidance | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| RSPCA UK care guidance | 60–100 W light bulb for the hot end | Hot end 38–42°C (100.4–107.6°F); cool end 22–26°C (71.6–78.8°F) | Keep at least 25–30 cm between the dragon’s back and the lamp; use a thermostat and check both ends daily with an infrared thermometer. |
| ReptiFiles example | 90–100 W | Temperature-based adjustment is required; the excerpt does not establish a single comparable target range. | Example applies to either a 4 × 2 × 4 ft or 6 × 2 × 2 ft enclosure. Guidance favors halogen flood bulbs. |
| University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine | Not stated; select the wattage that provides the proper tank temperature. | Basking spot 88–95°F; daytime tank 80–85°F | Place the heat lamp over one end to create a thermal gradient. |
The chart cannot be turned into a room-temperature-by-tank-size lookup table. None of the cited guidance establishes enough controlled combinations of enclosure dimensions, room temperature, lamp height and fixture to support one. Two enclosures with the same floor area can need different output if one is taller, colder, screened differently, or has the basking platform at another height.
Why wattage alone cannot predict temperature
Enclosure dimensions and height
Heat has farther to travel in a tall enclosure, while a low basking ledge brings the animal closer to the lamp. Length and width determine how much space is available for a gradient; height changes the distance and the amount of air above the animal. Record all three dimensions, not just gallons or floor area.

Distance to the basking surface
Measure from the bulb’s emitting face to the exact surface where the dragon’s back rests. A lamp can be the same wattage yet produce a very different basking temperature when it is moved higher, lower, or mounted outside a mesh top. The RSPCA specifies a minimum 25–30 cm separation between the dragon’s back and the lamp; treat that as a safety and placement requirement for its guidance, not as a universal distance for every bulb model.
Room temperature and enclosure materials
PetMD identifies enclosure size, basking distance and ambient room temperature as factors in bulb selection. A cool room increases the heat the enclosure must gain; a warm room may make the same bulb excessive. Glass, solid tops, mesh, vents and internal barriers also alter heat loss. Note the room temperature at the time you test, because a result obtained during a warm afternoon may not hold overnight or in winter.
Bulb and fixture type
Wattage describes electrical power, not a guaranteed basking temperature. Bulb shape and beam spread affect how concentrated the heat is. ReptiFiles recommends halogen flood bulbs in the examples above. The fixture, socket rating, reflector and any mesh between lamp and animal also change delivered heat. Compare readings only when the bulb, fixture and mounting position are known.

Temperature targets: select a source and define the measurement
Before buying a bulb, write down which published target you are following. UC Davis describes an 88–95°F basking spot and 80–85°F daytime tank temperature. RSPCA describes a 38–42°C hot end and 22–26°C cool end. These are not interchangeable labels: a basking surface reading, a hot-end air reading and a general daytime tank reading can be taken at different locations.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Basking surface: the top of the platform where the dragon’s body actually rests.
- Hot end: the warm region under and around the lamp, as defined by the care framework you selected.
- Cool end: the shaded or unheated end available for retreat.
- Daytime ambient: the broader enclosure air temperature, distinct from the surface directly under the bulb.
Use the same measurement location every time. A temperature that looks acceptable at the cool end does not prove the basking surface is safe, and a correct basking surface does not prove the dragon has a usable cool retreat.
How to set up and tune the bulb
- Measure the enclosure. Record internal length, width and height, the room temperature, the basking platform height, and whether the lamp sits inside or outside a mesh screen.
- Choose a starting bulb. Use the chart’s context. A 60–100 W starting range follows the RSPCA example; 90–100 W is the ReptiFiles example for the specified footprints. Select a heat-producing bulb and fixture designed for that electrical load.
- Place heat over one end. Do not center the lamp so the entire enclosure is equally warm. The one-end position creates a path between the basking zone and the cooler end, as advised by UC Davis and the RSPCA.
- Set the distance safely. Measure from the lamp to the basking surface and keep the animal’s back at least 25–30 cm away when following RSPCA guidance. Secure the fixture so a climbing dragon cannot contact the hot lamp.
- Add thermostat control. Connect the heat source to a thermostat and set it according to the thermostat and husbandry instructions. A thermostat regulates output; it does not replace temperature measurement.
- Run the enclosure and let readings stabilize. Test during the normal daytime lighting period with the enclosure arranged exactly as it will be used, including substrate, hides, branches and the dragon’s platform.
- Measure both ends. Use an infrared thermometer on the basking surface and check the cool end as well. RSPCA guidance calls for readings at both ends daily. Repeat measurements after changing bulb height, fixture, thermostat setting or room conditions.
- Adjust one variable at a time. If the basking surface is below your selected target, first verify the reading and distance, then adjust regulated output or lamp position. If it is above target, reduce regulated output, increase distance within the equipment’s safe installation limits, or select a lower-output bulb. Recheck the cool end after every change.
- Record the final arrangement. Note bulb type and wattage, fixture, distance, thermostat setting, room temperature and measured basking and cool-side temperatures. This record makes seasonal troubleshooting possible.
Reading the results and deciding what to change
If the basking surface is too cool
- Confirm that the thermometer is aimed at the actual basking surface, not at a nearby wall or the air above it.
- Check that the bulb is producing heat and that the fixture is appropriate for the bulb.
- Verify the lamp-to-platform distance and whether mesh or a barrier is reducing delivered heat.
- Increase thermostat-controlled output or revise the distance only within the fixture and bulb manufacturer’s safety limits.
- If the room is unusually cold, recognize that a higher wattage may be needed to overcome that ambient loss; do not assume the same bulb will work year-round.
If the basking surface is too hot
- Recheck the measurement with the infrared thermometer and inspect the thermostat probe placement.
- Reduce regulated output or increase the lamp distance while preserving the required safe separation.
- Consider a lower-wattage or less concentrated bulb if the setup remains excessive at the safe mounting height.
- Check the cool end after the change. A cooler basking spot is not a successful adjustment if the entire enclosure becomes too warm.
If both ends are nearly the same temperature
The lamp may be centered, the enclosure may be losing its cool retreat, or the room may be unusually warm. Move heat to one end, check ventilation and measure again. The objective is a usable gradient, not a single uniform temperature.

If temperatures swing from day to day
Look for changes in room temperature, lamp distance, thermostat behavior, or the position of a removable basking platform. Keep the same measurement points and log readings daily while diagnosing the cause. The RSPCA specifically recommends daily infrared checks at both ends.

A basking bulb does not replace ultraviolet-B lighting. North Carolina State University notes that most UVB bulbs produce little heat, so a separate heat lamp is also needed. Plan the UVB system independently: use a linear T5 high-output UVB lamp and fixture selected for the enclosure, and follow that model’s distance and installation instructions.

Equipment checklist before the dragon moves in
- Heat-producing basking bulb selected as a starting estimate, not as a guaranteed final wattage.
- Fixture and socket rated for the bulb and securely mounted.
- Thermostat connected to the heat source and configured according to its instructions.
- Infrared thermometer for the basking surface and a way to monitor the cool end.
- Stable basking platform at a measured distance from the lamp.
- Cool-side hide or retreat that remains outside the direct basking beam.
- Separate linear T5 high-output UVB system with model-specific mounting distance.
- Written log of room temperature, lamp distance, thermostat setting and both temperature readings.
Common mistakes to avoid
Buying by tank volume alone
Volume does not include the distance from lamp to platform or the effect of a tall versus low enclosure. Use full dimensions and the actual platform height.
Treating a package wattage as a temperature rating
A 100 W label does not mean every 100 W bulb produces the same basking result. Bulb type, beam, fixture, mesh and room temperature matter.
Checking only one location
A single reading can hide an overheated basking surface or an unusably warm cool end. Check both ends, and aim the infrared thermometer at the surfaces the dragon uses.

Leaving the lamp unregulated
RSPCA guidance calls for thermostat regulation. Room conditions and bulb output can change; regulation and daily measurements work together.
Using the basking lamp as UVB
Heat and UVB are separate requirements. Provide the separate UVB fixture and follow its model-specific distance instructions.
Bottom line for choosing your bulb
Start with the source-specific range that most closely matches your setup: RSPCA’s 60–100 W example or ReptiFiles’ 90–100 W example for the listed enclosure footprints. Then place the lamp over one end, maintain the required separation, regulate it with a thermostat, and measure the basking surface and cool side with an infrared thermometer. Keep adjusting until your chosen husbandry source’s targets are met and your dragon can move freely between warm and cool areas. The correct wattage is the one that achieves those measured conditions safely in your enclosure—not a number selected from a chart without testing.
