Plan on about $300–$600 or more for a first-time bearded-dragon setup, before veterinary surprises and recurring supplies. An ordinary-morph dragon is estimated at $40–$100-plus; unusual morphs can cost hundreds more. Those figures are editorial estimates from BeardedDragon101.com’s page marked updated 2026, not a location-wide price survey.
There is no defensible universal monthly total. Your recurring bill changes with the dragon’s age, insect and greens diet, enclosure size, electricity tariff, UVB replacement schedule and local exotic-veterinary fees. This guide separates known setup ranges from costs you must calculate locally.

What a bearded dragon really costs
Buying the lizard is only one line in the budget. A functioning habitat needs an enclosure, linear UVB system, basking heat, temperature controls, measuring equipment, furnishings, food tools, supplements and initial feeder insects. BeardedDragon101.com’s 2026-updated cost guide places that first-time package at approximately $300–$600 or more. The enclosure and lighting usually determine where you land in that range.
The same guide estimates an ordinary morph at $40–$100-plus. Rarer morphs may run from several hundred dollars upward, depending on rarity and lineage. Treat both figures as that publisher’s estimates rather than guaranteed prices; local availability, breeder reputation, age and health can move the purchase price substantially.

After setup, budget categories are feeder insects, leafy greens and vegetables, supplements, UVB bulbs, electricity, substrate or worn equipment, routine reptile-veterinary care and an emergency reserve. The available cost guide names these categories but does not publish a reliable monthly dollar total, so any single monthly number would imply accuracy the evidence does not support.
One-time setup budget
The following ranges are the itemized estimates reported by BeardedDragon101.com (page labeled updated 2026). They are typical ranges from that guide, not independently verified current retail prices, and they do not guarantee that every component will fit every enclosure.
| Component | Reported range | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Enclosure | $150–$450 | Size, ventilation, doors and construction quality drive the largest variation. |
| T5 HO 10.0 UVB bulb and fixture | $35–$70 | Provides ultraviolet-B exposure; a linear fixture must be compatible with the enclosure. |
| Basking bulb and dome | $10–$30 | Creates the warm basking area; heat output must be measured, not guessed. |
| Thermostat | $20–$40 | Controls or limits heat equipment and helps prevent dangerous overheating. |
| Thermometers and hygrometer | $15–$40 | Lets you monitor both ends of the habitat and humidity instead of relying on room feel. |
| Décor, hides, platform and substrate | $40–$90 | Creates a stable basking perch, shelter and usable floor surface. |
| Dishes, tongs and first supplements | $20–$40 | Covers feeding and initial nutrition supplies. |
| Starter feeder insects | Included in the guide’s setup estimate | The quantity and species depend on the dragon’s age and prey-size requirements. |
Adding the lizard’s purchase price to this equipment budget gives a more honest starting point than advertising a “cheap” dragon. A lower initial quote often leaves out the UVB system, temperature controls or an adult-sized enclosure—items that are not optional husbandry details.

Habitat guidance varies by authority, so present dimensions as attributed recommendations rather than one universal rule. BeardedDragon101.com describes 40 gallons as a minimum and 75–120 gallons as a preferred larger range for adults. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (John Gardiner, page dated April 12, 2019) describes a 75- or 120-gallon aquarium, or a custom habitat at least 48 × 24 × 18 inches. VCA Animal Hospitals’ housing guidance says 60–100 gallons or larger. Hong Kong’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department calls for at least 120 × 60 × 50 cm.
These recommendations agree on the practical goal: a spacious, well-ventilated habitat with a warm basking end and a cooler retreat. They do not establish a single minimum that suits every dragon or enclosure design. Check the animal’s expected adult size, the usable floor area, ventilation, lamp clearances and your ability to place equipment safely before buying.
Why the size decision changes the budget
A juvenile starter tank may cost less, but replacing it later means paying for another enclosure and possibly another fixture layout. A larger adult habitat costs more at the start yet gives you room to establish a real temperature gradient. The enclosure also determines UVB-fixing distance, basking-platform height, cable routing and the quantity of décor and substrate you need.
Ventilation and safe construction
Choose a habitat that allows cross-ventilation and secure mounting of lights outside the animal’s reach. VCA specifically warns against hot rocks and says heat sources should be outside the enclosure. A screen or purpose-built reptile habitat may require different lamp stands and guards than a glass aquarium; confirm compatibility before purchasing a bulb or fixture.

Lighting, heat and monitoring are core costs
Bearded dragons need ultraviolet-B exposure and a separate basking heat source. NC State Veterinary Hospital explains that UVB does not pass through glass or plastic and that most UVB bulbs produce little heat, so a separate basking lamp is required. UC Davis likewise cautions that ordinary screw-in bulbs marketed as “full spectrum” can provide heat without providing the UVB a dragon needs.
Measure both ends of the habitat
NC State recommends thermometers at both ends, with daytime temperatures of 75–85°F and a basking spot of 88–100°F. UC Davis gives daytime temperatures of 80–85°F and a basking spot of 88–95°F. Because these published values are not identical, use them as attributed starting guidance, then verify the current bulb manufacturer’s instructions and have a reptile veterinarian help you adjust for your enclosure and animal.
Place the basking lamp over one end so the dragon can move away from it. VCA’s housing guide, last updated August 15, 2022, states: “Heat sources should always be placed OUTSIDE the enclosure and above one end of it (the basking end) so there is no possibility of direct contact between the heating element and your bearded dragon, which might result in your pet burning itself on the bulb.” A thermostat, digital thermometers and—when appropriate—an infrared thermometer help you detect a failed bulb or an unsafe hot spot before it injures the animal.
Plan for bulb replacement
A UVB bulb can continue to glow after its ultraviolet output has fallen. Published replacement intervals differ: BeardedDragon101.com says every 6–12 months; NC State says every six months; UC Davis says every 3–6 months; VCA says every six months or according to the manufacturer; Hong Kong’s government guide says every 6–9 months. Follow the exact bulb maker’s schedule, record the installation date and ask an exotics veterinarian whether your setup warrants an earlier change. Replacement is a recurring cost even when the lamp still appears bright.

Recurring food costs change with age
Food is not a fixed monthly subscription. Young dragons generally eat more insects, while adults shift toward more greens and vegetables. NC State says young lizards need more insects and that adult meals include more greens; BeardedDragon101.com makes the same age distinction. UC Davis recommends varied greens and appropriately sized, gut-loaded prey.
Juvenile feeding budget
Expect the insect portion of the budget to be the larger variable while a dragon is growing. You must buy live prey often enough to avoid running out, keep it in suitable conditions and provide gut-loading supplies. Quantity depends on age, body size, prey species and the veterinarian’s plan, so a monthly dollar figure cannot be transferred safely from one juvenile to another.
Adult feeding budget
Adults usually rely more heavily on leafy greens and vegetables, with insects still included. Fresh produce prices vary by season and location, and a dragon may waste food if portions are prepared too generously. Buy prey in sizes appropriate for the animal; oversized insects can create health risks and unnecessary expense.

Supplements are not a universal line item
Supplement advice differs among veterinary sources. UC Davis describes age-specific supplement practices, while NC State notes that many dragons eating a good diet may not need additional supplements. Do not copy a fixed calcium or multivitamin schedule from a generic shopping list. Ask an exotics veterinarian to assess the diet, UVB exposure and the individual dragon before selecting products or frequency.
How to estimate electricity without inventing a bill
No cited source supplies a representative electricity amount. Your cost depends on bulb wattage, thermostat cycling, hours of operation, ambient temperature and the utility rate in your area. You can calculate it from your own equipment:
- Record each light or heater’s wattage from its label.
- Multiply watts by hours used per day, then divide by 1,000 to convert to kilowatt-hours.
- Multiply daily kilowatt-hours by the number of days in your billing period.
- Multiply that result by your utility’s current price per kilowatt-hour.
- Add equipment that cycles through a thermostat using its measured duty cycle rather than assuming it runs continuously.
Keep basking and UVB schedules consistent for the animal, but do not reduce safe operating time simply to chase a lower bill. If your room is cold, the heater may run longer; if it is warm, it may cycle less. A plug-in energy meter can replace assumptions with readings from your actual setup.
Veterinary and emergency money
Budget for routine examinations with a reptile or exotic-animal veterinarian and keep a separate reserve for illness or injury. BeardedDragon101.com does not provide a visit price, and fees differ by clinic, region, diagnostics and after-hours availability. Call local practices before acquiring the dragon to ask whether they treat bearded dragons, what a wellness visit includes and how emergencies are handled.
Do not treat the emergency reserve as optional savings that can be spent on décor. A failed heater, parasite testing, dehydration, trauma or a sudden appetite change can require care when you have not had time to build a fund. The reserve amount must reflect your local clinic’s quoted fees and your ability to reach an emergency service.

Stage 1: price the complete habitat
Choose the adult enclosure approach first, then price the compatible UVB fixture, basking lamp, dome, thermostat, thermometers, hygrometer, platform, hides, substrate, dishes, tongs and starter feeders. Do not use a small temporary habitat to make the headline number look lower unless you also budget its replacement.
Stage 2: record local recurring prices
Write down the prices and purchase frequency for your chosen feeder insects, greens, vegetables, gut-loading food, supplements (if your veterinarian recommends them), substrate and UVB bulbs. Use your electricity calculation rather than a generic estimate. This produces a personal monthly range without pretending that one household’s costs apply everywhere.

- Locate an exotic veterinarian, save the clinic’s contact details and set aside emergency funds.
Common ways owners accidentally underbudget
Counting only the animal
A $40–$100-plus ordinary morph is not a complete ownership price. The animal still needs the equipment listed in the setup table, and unusual morphs can cost considerably more.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Buying heat without UVB
A warm enclosure can still leave a dragon without ultraviolet-B exposure. “Full spectrum” on a screw-in heat bulb does not by itself prove that the animal receives usable UVB.
Using glass or plastic between the bulb and the dragon
NC State states that UVB does not pass through glass or plastic. Mount the appropriate linear fixture so the UVB reaches the basking area at the manufacturer-specified distance.
Guessing temperatures by touch
Room temperature and a hand test cannot reveal the hottest surface or the cool-end reading. Use thermometers at both ends and adjust only after measuring.
Assuming the first UVB bulb lasts indefinitely
Visible light is not a UVB output test. Put the replacement interval on your calendar and follow the manufacturer or veterinarian guidance.
Applying one supplement schedule to every dragon
Veterinary recommendations differ, and diet quality and UVB exposure matter. Individual advice is safer than an automatic dose copied from a product listing.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How much does it cost to feed a bearded dragon per month?
No reliable monthly dollar amount is established. Juveniles generally require more insects; adults eat more greens and fewer insects. Local prices, waste, prey species and the dragon’s age determine the result.
How much does electricity cost for a bearded dragon?
No representative bill is published. Calculate it from your lights’ wattage, operating hours, thermostat cycling and local electricity tariff, then verify the estimate with your utility bill or an energy meter.
Bottom line for planning
Set aside at least the published $300–$600-or-more setup estimate, plus the dragon’s purchase price, before bringing one home. Choose an adult-capable enclosure and budget for UVB replacement, age-appropriate food, electricity, veterinary care and emergencies. Because no universal monthly total is supported, the most accurate plan is a local worksheet built from your equipment labels, receipts and an exotic veterinarian’s fees.
