Buy the habitat around the adult dragon, not around a temporary “starter kit.” Before bringing one home, have a secure, ventilated enclosure; a guarded basking lamp on a thermostat; a separate, correctly mounted UVB system; thermometers and a hygrometer; stable furnishings and a carefully chosen substrate; food, supplements, cleaning supplies and a plan for reptile veterinary care.
The setup is safe only when it creates a measurable gradient: a warm basking zone, a cooler retreat, shade, and enough floor space to move between them. The exact targets below are attributed to the organization that publishes them, because reputable care authorities do not use identical temperatures, feeding schedules or substrate recommendations.

Start with the enclosure, not the accessories
Choose the enclosure first because every lamp, guard, branch and measurement depends on its internal dimensions and mounting points. For one adult, the UK Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) lists a minimum enclosure of 120 cm long × 60 cm wide × 60 cm high. RSPCA Australia describes an appropriate adult enclosure as 1.2–1.8 m long × 0.6 m wide × 0.6–0.9 m high. These are different recommendations, not numbers to average; use the authority and husbandry plan you are following and make sure the animal has usable floor area and a real warm-to-cool gradient.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRead the enclosure’s internal measurements, not its exterior dimensions. Check that the structure is secure, easy to disinfect, adequately ventilated and capable of retaining heat without trapping excessive humidity. Confirm that the doors close against escapes and that there are safe mounting points for both the heat lamp and UVB fixture.

Placement checks
- Put the enclosure away from radiators, heaters and drafts that can destabilize temperatures.
- Avoid bright windows as a heat source. The RSPCA states that UVB does not pass through window glass, so sunlight through a window cannot replace a reptile UVB lamp. Its exact guidance is: “UVB does not pass through glass windows so you should place a reptile UVB lamp inside the vivarium.” Read the organization’s care guidance at RSPCA UK.
- Leave working space around the enclosure so you can open it, clean it and read instruments without disturbing the dragon.
- Do not buy a package solely because it says “starter kit.” Verify the actual floor dimensions, ventilation, lamp clearance, fixture compatibility and guard fit item by item.
Heat: buy a controlled basking system
A bearded dragon needs to move away from its heat source. Install a basking heat lamp over one end rather than heating the entire enclosure uniformly, and use a protective guard so the dragon cannot touch the hot bulb or dislodge it.
Controls and instruments
- Thermostat: Choose one suitable for the heat source you select and install it according to the thermostat and lamp manufacturers’ instructions. A lamp without temperature control can overheat a small enclosure.
- Digital thermometers: Use one at the basking end and one at the cool end. Position probes where the dragon actually experiences the temperature, secure them against chewing and verify that they remain in place after cleaning.
- Infrared thermometer: Use it to check the surface temperature of the basking stone or platform, not just the air temperature shown on a wall-mounted gauge.
Temperature targets and lamp distance
UK RSPCA guidance specifies 38–42°C at the hot end and 22–26°C at the cool end. It says the basking stone should let the dragon access heat while keeping its back 25–30 cm from the lamp. That distance is not a universal installation measurement: bulb wattage, reflector, mesh and enclosure height change the result. Follow the lamp maker’s clearance instructions, then measure the actual basking surface and both ends of the enclosure.
At night, the same UK guidance says the temperature should not fall below 20–22°C. Do not add night heating automatically. First measure the room and enclosure after the lights go out. If supplementary heat is genuinely needed, the guidance mentions a safely installed, non-light-emitting ceramic heater controlled by a thermostat. Any heater must be guarded and positioned so it cannot burn the animal or overheat the enclosure.

UVB and visible light are separate purchases
Heat and UVB do different jobs. A basking bulb can make a surface hot while providing no useful UVB. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine specifically warns that screw-in bulbs, including products sold as “full spectrum,” provide heat but not UVB: UC Davis bearded dragon care guidance.

What to buy
- A reptile UVB lamp and a fixture designed for that lamp.
- A reflector compatible with the fixture and a guard that prevents contact and breakage.
- A plug-in timer for a consistent cycle.
- An ultraviolet index (UVI) meter if your budget permits; it lets you check output at the dragon’s level instead of trusting the package rating.
The UK RSPCA describes a high-output 10–12% UVB fluorescent tube, up to half the vivarium’s length, mounted toward the hot end with a suitable reflector. Treat those specifications as that source’s recommendation, not a universal bulb-selection formula. Lamp type, reflector, mesh, mounting height, replacement age and the dragon’s phenotype all affect the dose.
That guidance aims for UVI 3.0–5.0 in the basking zone, falling to zero in shade. Some morphs, such as albinos, need lower UVB; the RSPCA gives a maximum basking UVI of 3.0 for them. Arrange the fixture so the animal can choose exposure and retreat into shade. Measure at animal level, and replace the lamp on the manufacturer’s schedule because UVB output declines even when the tube still appears bright.
Light schedule
UK RSPCA guidance recommends 12 hours on and 12 hours off. Set the timer before arrival and check that the enclosure is dark at night unless a measured temperature problem requires a non-light-emitting heater.

Humidity and ventilation equipment
Buy a digital hygrometer and place it at the cool end, where the dragon can retreat. The UK RSPCA gives 30–40% as its usual humidity range and says higher humidity calls for more ventilation. Use the reading to adjust airflow and furnishings rather than misting on a routine that raises humidity without a reason.

- Keep vents unobstructed after adding décor.
- Do not fill the enclosure with plants or damp materials if they push humidity above the range advised by your chosen care authority.
- Record readings at different times for several days before the dragon arrives; a single number after a door has just opened is not a stable baseline.
Furnishings: shelter, climbing and a safe basking surface
Buy furnishings for function and stability. The dragon should have a secure basking stone or platform, branches that cannot roll or collapse, and a hide at each end so it can shelter without losing access to the thermal gradient.
Required features
- Basking platform: broad enough for the whole body, firmly supported and positioned at the measured lamp distance.
- Climbing branches: fixed so they cannot fall onto the animal or block the lamp and UVB beam.
- Two hides: one toward the warm end and one toward the cool end; each should be large enough for the dragon to enter and turn around.
- Digging opportunity: provide a designated digging box if the main floor uses a non-loose material.
Wash and dry new décor before installation. Avoid unstable rock piles, sharp edges and objects that create an unmeasured route too close to a hot bulb.
Substrate requires a deliberate, health-based choice
Substrate advice is one area where the cited authorities disagree. The UK RSPCA says healthy adult dragons can use reptile-safe sand or a sand/soil mixture and describes a cool-end digging box. It warns against calci-sand and loose large materials such as bark, wood chips, crushed walnut and corn cob because ingestion can cause impaction. In contrast, UC Davis advises against sand, wood chips and gravel and favors easy-to-clean alternatives.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not treat either recommendation as a universal rule for every age and health status. Compare the animal’s age, appetite, hydration, stool history, medical conditions, cleaning demands and the keeper’s ability to prevent ingestion. Ask a reptile-experienced veterinarian before choosing a loose substrate for a juvenile, an ill dragon or one with a history that raises impaction concerns. If you choose slate or another solid floor, retain digging behavior with a separate, stable digging box rather than scattering loose material throughout the enclosure.

Food, water and supplements to have ready
Water
Buy a large, shallow dish that cannot tip easily. Keep it clean, refill it with fresh water at least daily and replace it whenever it is soiled. Position it so spills do not soak the substrate or raise humidity beyond the target you are monitoring.
Greens and vegetables
Have safe leafy greens and vegetables available before arrival. UK RSPCA examples include watercress, rocket, chicory, cress, butternut squash, dandelion, clover and plantain leaves. Wash produce, remove uneaten food and vary the selection rather than relying on one item.
Live feeders
Use appropriately sized feeder insects: the UK RSPCA says they should be no larger than the dragon’s mouth. Buy a ventilated insect container, a method to hydrate and gut-load the insects, and a way to remove uneaten insects promptly because some can bite the dragon. Never leave a large number of live feeders roaming in the enclosure overnight.
Age changes the feeding plan
Feeding proportions and schedules vary between the UK and Australian RSPCA materials, so follow one complete, species-specific plan with your veterinarian rather than combining isolated numbers. As an example, the UK RSPCA describes young dragons at about 65% live food and 35% greens, and older dragons over 30 cm at about 40% live food and 60% greens. It describes babies being fed twice daily and juveniles and adults once daily. RSPCA Australia and other care pages use different age bands and schedules.

Supplements
Buy the vitamin and mineral supplement recommended for your feeding plan, but dose it exactly as the manufacturer directs. UK RSPCA guidance says live food should be lightly dusted and warns that vitamins and minerals can be over-provided. Adequate UVB and supplementation are connected decisions; excessive powder cannot compensate for a poorly measured UVB setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cleaning supplies and health readiness
Keep reptile-safe disinfectant, disposable towels, a dedicated scrub brush and waste bags with the enclosure. UK RSPCA guidance advises prompt spot-cleaning and a monthly enclosure clean followed by thorough rinsing. Remove all disinfectant residue and let surfaces dry before returning furnishings.
Wash your hands before and after handling the dragon, its food or its enclosure because reptiles can carry Salmonella. Set aside money and transport arrangements for a reptile-experienced veterinarian. Observe appetite, droppings, movement, skin, eyes and breathing every day; contact a specialist if behavior or physical condition changes. The UK RSPCA identifies inadequate UVB as a frequent cause of metabolic bone disease, which is why lighting and measurement belong on the initial shopping list, not on a later upgrade list.

- Place and inspect the empty enclosure. Confirm internal dimensions, secure closure, ventilation and that the location is away from radiators and direct window light.
- Install the fixtures. Mount the basking lamp at one end with its guard. Install the UVB fixture and reflector according to the lamp manufacturer’s clearance and orientation instructions. Keep cables and plugs outside the dragon’s reach.
- Add the thermostat and instruments. Connect the heat source to the suitable thermostat. Place digital thermometer probes at the warm and cool ends, the hygrometer at the cool end and, if available, mark the locations where you will take infrared surface readings.
- Build the gradient. Add the basking platform, hides and branches, leaving an unobstructed cool retreat and shade. Do not finalize décor until you can still reach the instruments and clean every surface.
- Run the enclosure empty. Operate the light schedule and heating for several days. Measure the basking surface, warm end, cool end and nighttime temperature; record humidity at the cool end. Adjust lamp height, fixture position, ventilation or furnishings until readings are stable and match the targets of the care authority you selected.
- Verify UVB at animal level. Use a UVI meter if possible. Check that the basking zone receives the intended exposure and that a shaded area measures zero or otherwise provides a genuine retreat, as described by the UK RSPCA.
- Prepare consumables. Stock fresh greens, correctly sized feeders, supplement, clean water, disinfectant and replacement bulbs or parts according to the manufacturers’ intervals.
- Recheck after installation changes. Any new branch, substrate layer or guard can alter distance, airflow and readings. Measure again before the dragon enters.
How to compare products without being misled by labels
When two items appear similar, compare the measurable function rather than the marketing name.
| Category | Compare these specifications | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Enclosures | Usable internal floor dimensions, ventilation, heat retention, secure closure, cleaning access and safe mounting points for heat and UVB | The enclosure must support movement between thermal zones and allow reliable maintenance. |
| Heat systems | Compatible thermostat, lamp wattage and clearance, guard fit, mounting position and measured surface temperature | Package wattage alone cannot predict the temperature at the basking platform. |
| UVB systems | Lamp and fixture type, reflector, mesh effects, distance to the basking animal, shade, guard, replacement interval and whether UVI can be measured | UVB exposure depends on the complete installation, not just a percentage printed on a box. |
| Substrates | Age and health suitability, ingestion and impaction risk, cleanability, humidity effects and whether digging remains possible | The safest choice depends on the individual dragon and husbandry routine. |
Buying mistakes that create avoidable risk
- Buying for a baby-sized enclosure: You may soon lack room for a gradient and adult furnishings. Plan the adult footprint where feasible.
- Assuming a heat bulb supplies UVB: Heat and UVB are separate functions; verify the lamp type and fixture.
- Trusting a dial without measuring: Use digital thermometers at both ends and an infrared thermometer for the basking surface.
- Mounting UVB behind glass: Window glass blocks UVB; the reptile fixture belongs inside the enclosure with safe guarding.
- Ignoring shade: A dragon must be able to leave the basking beam. Arrange décor so the cool end and shaded areas remain usable.
- Choosing loose substrate by appearance: The UK RSPCA and UC Davis differ. Make the decision with age, health, ingestion risk and veterinary advice in view.
- Leaving live insects in the enclosure: Remove uneaten feeders because some can bite.
- Skipping a test run: An enclosure can look complete while temperatures, humidity or UVI are wrong. Run and measure it empty first.
Final pre-arrival checklist
- Adult-sized, secure and ventilated enclosure with verified internal dimensions.
- Guarded basking lamp on a suitable thermostat.
- Separate reptile UVB lamp, compatible fixture, reflector and guard.
- Timer set for the chosen light cycle.
- Digital thermometers at warm and cool ends, infrared thermometer for surfaces and hygrometer at the cool end.
- Stable basking platform, two hides, safe branches and a digging solution.
- Water dish, washed greens, correctly sized feeder insects, ventilated feeder container and the prescribed supplement.
- Reptile-safe disinfectant and hand-washing supplies.
- Several days of recorded test readings and contact details for a reptile-experienced veterinarian.
A bearded dragon setup is ready when the animal can choose heat, UVB, shade, shelter and digging space while you can verify those conditions every day. The equipment list is only the beginning: the enclosure must be measured, maintained and adjusted for the individual dragon throughout its expected 10–15-year-or-more captive lifespan, as noted by the UK RSPCA.
