Many are considered fully grown around 18 months, although some continue adding body mass until roughly two years. The chart ranges below are broad husbandry references—not veterinary growth standards—so your dragon’s dated trend, body condition, appetite, and behavior matter more than one measurement.
Bearded dragon size chart by age
The following figures come from a 2026 age chart published by BeardedDragon101.com. Length means total body length from the snout to the tail tip, not snout-to-vent length (SVL). The ranges are approximate and do not establish a pass-or-fail size for an individual animal.

| Age | Typical total length, including tail | Stage named by the chart |
|---|---|---|
| 0–1 month | 3–4 inches | Hatchling |
| 2 months | 5–9 inches | Baby |
| 3 months | 8–11 inches | Baby |
| 4 months | 9–12 inches | Juvenile |
| 6 months | 11–18 inches | Juvenile |
| 8 months | 13–20 inches | Juvenile |
| 12 months | 16–22 inches | Sub-adult |
| 18 months and older | 18–24 inches | Adult |
The source does not publish a value for every intervening month. Do not fill the gaps by averaging the listed numbers and then treat the result as a target. Growth can be uneven, and two healthy dragons of the same age may sit at different points within—or occasionally outside—a broad reference range.
Monthly weight references
A separate Beardie Husbandry chart pairs similar length anchors with ballpark weights. It specifically cautions that feeding, brumation, and breeding season can change weight. These figures are a publisher’s husbandry reference, not a validated healthy-weight standard.

| Age | Total length, including tail | Ballpark weight |
|---|---|---|
| 0–1 month | 3–4 inches | 4–6 g |
| 2 months | 5–9 inches | 8–40 g |

| 12 months | 16–22 inches | 300–465 g |
| 18 months and older | 18–24 inches | 380–510 g |
Notice how wide several ranges are, especially during the juvenile months. A weight at the low or high end does not diagnose a problem by itself. Record the date, weight, length convention, appetite, and visible body condition so a veterinarian can assess a trend rather than a snapshot.
How fast do bearded dragons grow?
Birth through six months: the fastest gains
The title-matched chart describes the first six months as the period of fastest growth. Length can change noticeably between weigh-ins, but the pace is not perfectly linear. A short pause followed by a spurt can occur, so a single month should not be judged in isolation.
About 12 months: near adult length
By approximately 12 months, many dragons are close to their eventual length; the chart lists 16–22 inches including the tail at that age. “Close” does not mean every dragon has stopped growing or that a dragon below the range is automatically unhealthy.

Around 18 months to two years: filling out
The same source considers dragons fully grown at about 18 months and lists 18–24 inches for adults. It also notes that some individuals continue filling out and gaining weight until roughly two years. A dragon can therefore add muscle or body mass after most of its length is established.
Why adult-size references disagree
Published adult figures vary because the sources use different populations, conventions, and purposes. None of the references below is a universal clinical growth curve.
| Source and date | Adult-size reference | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| BeardedDragon101.com, page identified as 2026 | 18–24 inches total length; the age chart gives 380–510 g at 18 months and older | General husbandry range, not a veterinary standard |
| PetMD, updated June 21, 2024 | Up to approximately 24 inches; about half of total length is tail | Care-sheet description of maximum size, not a promise for every dragon |
| UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, April 12, 2019 | 15–20 inches total length | Source-specific adult reference; it is narrower and lower than some other published ranges |
| Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians handout, 2016 | 18–24 inches; average weight 283–510 g | Professional handout range with its own stated average-weight convention |
Because these references do not agree, adult length alone cannot establish exact age, sex, health, or captive-care quality. There is no named population study behind the month-by-month charts that would make one number a universal standard for all bearded dragons.

Total length and SVL are different measurements
Total length includes the tail. SVL means snout-to-vent length and stops at the body opening before the tail. A husbandry checklist recommends measuring SVL monthly, while the age chart reports total length. Those numbers cannot be compared directly: an SVL of 12 inches is not equivalent to a 12-inch total-length entry.

Choose one convention for each record and write it beside the measurement. If you compare a breeder’s, seller’s, or veterinarian’s number with a chart, first ask whether it is total length or SVL.
How to track growth accurately at home
- Set a schedule. Weigh the dragon every two weeks, as recommended by the husbandry checklist, and measure length once a month. More frequent weighing can make ordinary day-to-day variation look like a trend.
- Use the same equipment. A digital kitchen scale can provide the repeated weight readings the checklist calls for. A flexible measuring tape can be used for length records. Keep the equipment and units consistent.
- Identify the measurement. Label each entry “total length” or “SVL.” Do not place an SVL value in the total-length chart or compare the two as if they were interchangeable.
- Date every entry. Record the exact date, weight, length, appetite, activity, and any seasonal change such as brumation or breeding behavior. These details explain why two readings may differ.
- Look for direction, not a single point. A series that is gradually increasing is more informative than whether one reading lands at the middle of a published range. Bring the log to an exotic-animal veterinarian if the trend reverses or stalls.
How to interpret a dragon that is smaller or larger than the chart
Compare like with like
When comparing two dragons, use the same age, the same length convention, and the same type of weight measurement. Compare ranges and trends rather than midpoint numbers. Also note the source: a veterinary care guide, a professional handout, and an informal husbandry chart are not equivalent evidence.

Check body condition and function
Size is only one observation. Appetite, alertness, activity, weight trend, and visible body condition provide context that a ruler cannot. A dragon near the lower end of a range but maintaining weight and behaving normally may need monitoring rather than intervention. Conversely, a dragon inside a chart range can still be ill.
Do not force a target weight
Do not increase food, supplements, or feeding frequency solely to make an individual reach a chart number. The published ranges are not treatment targets, and a chart cannot identify whether a deviation comes from genetics, age uncertainty, seasonal change, husbandry, or disease.
Husbandry factors that support normal growth
Veterinary care sources emphasize the basics of a suitable habitat, while warning that a chart cannot prove which factor explains one dragon’s growth pattern.

- Temperature: PetMD recommends a thermal gradient and daily temperature checks. Use reliable thermometers so the warm and cool areas can be monitored rather than estimated.
- UVB exposure: PetMD lists UVB equipment among essential supplies and explains that UVB supports vitamin D and calcium metabolism. Inadequate or poorly positioned UVB can undermine those processes, but a growth chart cannot diagnose a UVB problem.
- Nutrition: Offer an age-appropriate diet and monitor intake. Do not change supplements simply to chase a published weight.
- Prey size: UC Davis warns that prey too large for a young dragon can cause serious problems. Select prey with the animal’s size in mind and seek veterinary guidance if feeding is difficult.
- Habitat conditions: General enclosure conditions, hydration, and seasonal changes can affect appetite and weight. Record meaningful changes alongside measurements.
When a small size or stalled growth needs veterinary attention
Contact an exotic-animal or reptile veterinarian when growth persistently stalls despite appropriate care, or when the trend is accompanied by weight loss, poor appetite, depression, or other illness signs. A reptile veterinarian can evaluate parasites and other medical causes; a husbandry chart cannot.
Arrange care promptly for a clear downward weight trend, repeated refusal to eat, marked lethargy, or any new symptom. Do not wait for the dragon to “catch up” to a chart if its own measurements are moving backward.
PetMD’s care sheet, written by Maria Zayas, DVM, and reviewed by Melissa Witherell, DVM, recommends a veterinary wellness examination once every year. Annual preventive visits give the veterinarian a baseline for body condition and weight, making a later change easier to recognize.

What the chart can—and cannot—tell you
The age ranges are useful for setting expectations: a hatchling is commonly only a few inches long, a six-month-old reference range is 11–18 inches including the tail, and adult references cluster broadly between the mid-teens and 24 inches depending on the source. They cannot tell you an exact age, predict an individual’s final size, or diagnose illness.
Use the chart as one line in a dated record. Keep total length and SVL separate, interpret weight in light of feeding and seasonal changes, and involve a reptile veterinarian when the individual’s trend or behavior raises concern.
