For an adult bearded dragon, choose the 75-gallon enclosure when 40 and 75 gallons are the only options. Several veterinary sources support 75 gallons or 60–100 gallons, while PetMD and Zoo Med list 40 gallons as an adult minimum. The deciding factors are the enclosure’s actual length and width, your dragon’s body length, ventilation, and whether you can maintain a measured warm-to-cool gradient—not the gallon label alone.
What the care guidance actually recommends
There is no single, universally adopted minimum. The published recommendations span 40 gallons, 60–100 gallons, 75 gallons, and larger custom enclosures. Treat each figure as guidance from a particular veterinary or manufacturer source, not as a proven welfare threshold.

When 40 gallons appears in guidance
PetMD’s bearded dragon care sheet, written and reviewed by veterinarians and updated June 21, 2024, says an adult needs a 40-gallon habitat or larger and advises providing the largest habitat possible. Zoo Med’s care guide identifies a 40-gallon terrarium measuring 36 × 18 × 18 inches as a minimum for an adult. Those statements establish 40 gallons as a minimum in some care plans; they do not establish it as the preferred adult size across veterinary guidance.
Why 75 gallons is supported for adults
UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine says a single adult can do well in a 75- or 120-gallon aquarium with a screen top. Iowa Veterinary Specialties states that an adult minimally requires a 75-gallon aquarium and recommends an even larger enclosure measuring 4 × 2 × 2 feet. A 75-gallon habitat therefore fits the more spacious end of the recommendations reviewed, although it is not the largest option described.

Intermediate and larger recommendations
VCA Animal Hospitals advises providing a 60–100-gallon tank or larger as a juvenile grows. VCA also says enclosure length should be at least three times the dragon’s total body length. A Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital husbandry page dated March 2, 2026 lists the same three-times-body-length rule; use that page as supplementary guidance alongside current advice from your reptile veterinarian (WSU husbandry guidance).
What the disagreement means for your decision
The sources do not report a controlled study showing that one of these capacities produces a specific health or survival improvement. Their recommendations are husbandry standards. A larger enclosure gives you more usable floor area and more flexibility to separate basking, shade, and cool zones, but only if it is furnished, lit, heated, ventilated, and monitored correctly.
40 gallons versus 75 gallons at a glance
| Decision factor | 40-gallon option | 75-gallon option |
|---|---|---|
| How guidance fits | Listed as an adult minimum by PetMD and Zoo Med; may be a starting or transitional enclosure depending on the care standard you follow. | Explicitly supported for adults by UC Davis and Iowa Veterinary Specialties; VCA’s growth guidance begins at 60–100 gallons or larger. |
| Example geometry | Zoo Med’s adult example is 36 × 18 × 18 inches. Other 40-gallon designs may have different proportions. | Capacity does not guarantee one footprint. UC Davis gives 48 × 24 × 18 inches as a built-enclosure dimension; check the specific model before buying. |
| Room for habitat zones | Less floor area to separate the basking platform, shelter, and cool end. Verify the gradient in the assembled enclosure. | More floor area generally makes zone placement easier, but temperatures still have to be measured at the dragon’s actual basking and resting locations. |
| Growth planning | A juvenile may outgrow it, and an adult may find the layout restrictive even when the label meets a minimum. | Usually the more practical adult choice of these two sizes, although a 4 × 2 × 2-foot enclosure or 120-gallon habitat provides more room. |
| Equipment implications | UVB and heat must be selected for the enclosure’s height and basking distance; a small footprint leaves little margin for misplaced fixtures. | Fixtures may need different mounting heights or coverage. Do not assume equipment suitable for a 40-gallon setup will produce the same exposure in a larger enclosure. |
Compare dimensions, not just gallon ratings
“40 gallon” and “75 gallon” describe capacity, not a universal shape. Two tanks with the same nominal volume can have different lengths, widths, heights, doors, screen areas, and usable floor space. Before purchase, obtain the internal dimensions and identify where the dragon can actually walk, turn, bask, hide, and climb.
Floor area affects the layout
Zoo Med’s 36 × 18-inch example provides 648 square inches of stated floor area. The 48 × 24-inch dimensions cited by UC Davis provide 1,152 square inches—about 78% more floor area by calculation. That comparison is illustrative, not a claim that every 75-gallon tank has the UC Davis dimensions. Measure the model you are considering, because a tall, narrow tank may offer less practical floor space than a lower, wider enclosure of similar capacity.

Apply the body-length rule
Measure your dragon from snout to tail tip and compare the result with the enclosure’s internal length. VCA and WSU guidance call for a length of at least three times total body length. A tank can carry a 75-gallon label yet fall short of that proportion if its footprint is unusually short. Treat the three-times measurement as a screening check, then confirm that the width leaves room for a basking surface, a shaded retreat, and unobstructed movement.
Account for usable height
Height determines the distance between the UVB source, basking surface, and dragon. A screen top, deep substrate, thick branches, or raised rocks can change the effective distance. The animal should be able to reach its preferred basking temperature without being forced dangerously close to a lamp, while the cool end remains genuinely cooler. Record the distance from the UVB fixture to the highest basking point rather than relying on the tank’s exterior height.
Choose differently for a juvenile and an adult
Juveniles
A 40-gallon enclosure can be a reasonable starting point for a small juvenile under some care plans, provided the dragon can locate food, water when offered, shelter, and the basking area. Plan the next enclosure before the animal grows into the current one. VCA’s recommendation to provide 60–100 gallons or larger as a juvenile grows means that a 40-gallon starter should not automatically be treated as a permanent habitat.

For a mature dragon choosing between only these two capacities, the 75-gallon option gives you more room to meet the three-times-body-length rule and separate environmental zones. Select an even larger enclosure when the 75-gallon model is short or narrow, when your dragon is large, or when the planned furnishings would leave little open floor area. UC Davis also identifies 120 gallons as a suitable aquarium size for a single adult, and Iowa Veterinary Specialties recommends a 4 × 2 × 2-foot enclosure as a larger target.

Dragons that are still growing
Do not buy a tank solely to avoid an immediate upgrade if its geometry prevents safe heating or UVB exposure. A correctly configured temporary enclosure is safer than a larger box in which the dragon cannot reach a suitable basking zone. Conversely, if a 40-gallon tank will be replaced within months, confirm that you can afford and place the next enclosure before committing to the smaller setup.
Build the environmental gradient in either size
Temperatures depend on the source and measuring point
Published targets differ because guides describe different locations or use different measurement conventions. VCA describes a cool end around 75–80°F and a warm end around 90–100°F, with a thermometer at each end. PetMD gives approximately 100°F for the basking side and 75°F for the cool side. UC Davis lists a daytime tank temperature of 80–85°F and a basking spot of 88–95°F. Follow one current veterinary plan consistently and document where each reading is taken; do not blend the highest number from one guide with the lowest number from another without professional direction.
The practical requirement is a measurable gradient: the dragon must be able to move away from the heat source and cool down. Place the basking surface under the overhead heat source, leave a cooler end away from it, and check both ends after the enclosure has reached operating temperature. Surface temperature at the basking rock can differ substantially from air temperature nearby.
UVB is essential, and distance controls exposure
UC Davis, PetMD, and Zoo Med all describe UVB as essential for bearded dragons. Zoo Med notes that bulb selection depends on enclosure height, Ferguson Zone, and the distance from the UVB source to the basking area. Its guide discusses products in the context of a 40-gallon enclosure 18 inches high; do not transfer that fixture arrangement to a different tank without rechecking the exact height, reflector, screen, and basking distance. Mount the UVB source according to the fixture manufacturer’s distance guidance and your veterinarian’s advice, and keep the basking and UVB areas coordinated so the dragon can use them naturally.

Ventilation and the lid are safety requirements
UC Davis recommends a well-ventilated enclosure with a screen top, and PetMD calls for a secure screened lid. An aquarium conversion needs a top that cannot be pushed aside or escaped through, while still allowing the intended heat and UVB equipment to be installed safely. A larger tank is not an upgrade if its lid blocks ventilation or leaves gaps around cables and fixtures.
Furnishings create usable habitat
UC Davis recommends climbing branches, basking rocks, and shelter. Arrange these so the dragon has a stable basking platform, a shaded hide, and clear paths between zones. Anchor heavy furnishings so they cannot topple, and check that branches or rocks do not lift the animal dangerously close to the heat or UVB source. An empty 75-gallon box offers less functional habitat than a thoughtfully arranged smaller enclosure.
Measure with the right tools
Use separate thermometers at the warm and cool ends. VCA notes that an electronic temperature gun can measure each end, and PetMD recommends warm- and cool-side thermometers plus an infrared thermometer for surface temperatures. Take readings at the basking surface, the cool resting area, and the air at both ends. Recheck after changing a bulb, moving a rock, replacing the screen, or altering the substrate.

Set up and validate the enclosure step by step
- Record the internal dimensions. Measure length, width, and height inside the enclosure, then note the distance from the planned basking surface to the top-mounted UVB and heat fixtures.
- Plan the zones on paper. Reserve one end for basking and the opposite end for cooling. Mark the hide, climbing structure, feeding area, and an unobstructed walking route before adding heavy furnishings.
- Install the secure, ventilated top. Confirm that the screen or other approved lid is stable, escape-resistant, and compatible with the heat and UVB fixtures.
- Place the basking platform. Use a stable rock or branch under the heat source. Keep the surface far enough from the fixture to meet its safety and distance instructions.
- Install UVB for the actual geometry. Select and position the UVB fixture based on enclosure height, screen material, Ferguson Zone guidance, and measured basking distance rather than on the gallon number.
- Add shelter and movement options. Provide a shaded hide, secure branches, and basking rocks while preserving open floor space and preventing climbs into unsafe fixture distances.
- Run the enclosure before introducing the dragon. Allow the heat and lighting schedule to stabilize, then measure warm-side air, cool-side air, and basking-surface temperatures with the thermometers and infrared gun.
- Adjust and document. Move the basking surface or fixtures, change ventilation openings only as appropriate, and repeat measurements until the chosen veterinary targets are reached at the intended locations. Keep a written record so you can detect drift after equipment changes.
Common mistakes when comparing 40 and 75 gallons
Using capacity as a substitute for dimensions
A gallon label cannot confirm that the enclosure meets the three-times-body-length rule or has enough width for separate zones. Reject a model whose internal measurements fail those checks, even if its advertised capacity sounds adequate.

Assuming a larger tank needs the same equipment arrangement
Moving the same lamp and UVB fixture from a 40-gallon enclosure into a taller or wider 75-gallon model changes exposure and temperature. Recalculate fixture-to-basking distances and measure both ends after every move.
Measuring only one temperature
A single thermometer can miss an overheated cool end or a basking surface that is too cold. Use warm- and cool-end thermometers and an infrared reading of the actual basking surface.
Leaving out ventilation or a secure top
Open-top or poorly fitted conversions create escape and equipment hazards. Use a stable screened lid and maintain the ventilation recommended for the enclosure design.
Filling the enclosure until movement is blocked
Branches, rocks, and hides should provide climbing and shelter without eliminating the walking route between warm and cool zones. Remove or reposition furnishings that force the dragon to remain near the heat source.
Treating a minimum as an ideal
Forty gallons is a stated minimum in some guides, not a consensus best size. If a 40-gallon enclosure cannot provide the required length, gradient, and usable area for your individual dragon, upgrade rather than defending the label.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- For an adult and a strict 40-versus-75 choice: select the 75-gallon model whose internal length and width support the three-times-body-length rule and a complete gradient.
- For a juvenile: a 40-gallon starter may work under your care plan, but set an upgrade date and budget for a 60–100-gallon-or-larger enclosure as the dragon grows.
- For either life stage: verify the actual footprint, screened ventilation, secure lid, UVB distance, basking and cool temperatures, shelter, and usable walking area.
- When the 75-gallon footprint is too short or narrow: choose a larger, wider enclosure such as the 4 × 2 × 2-foot format recommended by Iowa Veterinary Specialties, or another design that meets the body-length and zone requirements.
- When readings cannot be brought into range: stop relying on the nominal gallon rating and seek reptile-veterinary guidance on fixture placement, equipment, and enclosure design.
