These 11 hummingbirds are an illustrative selection of visually striking species, not an objective ranking. Their beauty comes from combinations of iridescent throat patches, jewel-like crowns, coppery or green bodies, unusual bills and distinctive tails. Because the species occupy different habitats—from desert scrub and coastal thickets to mountain regions—no single list applies to every yard or country.

One essential identification rule is that a hummingbird’s color can change dramatically with the light. Cornell Lab of Ornithology explains that microscopic feather structure helps create these colors, so an iridescent throat may flash red, purple or emerald when the bird turns, then look nearly black or dull in shade. Use color together with bill shape, tail pattern, sex, age, habitat and location.

Why hummingbird colors look like changing jewels

The vivid throat patch on a male hummingbird is called a gorget. It is often the quickest field mark, but it is not a permanently painted badge. Iridescent feathers reflect light differently as the bird moves and as your viewing angle changes. Cornell Lab’s 2024 explanation attributes the effect to feather structure rather than pigment alone, including microscopic air spaces that influence reflected light.

That is why a Ruby-throated male can show a brilliant scarlet throat in sunshine yet appear dark in shade. Costa’s and Rivoli’s males can also lose much of their apparent purple or emerald brilliance under poor lighting. A photograph taken from one angle may therefore make the same bird look like a different species.

For reliable identification, note the whole bird: crown color, gorget shape, bill length and color, body pattern, tail shape, sex or age, and the habitat where you saw it. Females and immature males often lack the adult male’s complete throat display.

11 beautiful hummingbird species to know

1. Ruby-throated Hummingbird

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird combines a bright green back and crown with the male’s red gorget. In good light, the throat can look like polished ruby; in shade, it may appear much darker. Females and young birds do not show the same fully developed red throat, so a green-backed hummingbird without red is not automatically another species.

Cornell describes Ruby-throated Hummingbirds visiting tubular flowers and feeders. A feeder can make them easier to observe where the species occurs, but it is optional: natural flowers and the bird’s local habitat remain the more important factors. Use the bird’s location and the shape of its bill and tail to confirm an identification rather than relying on a single flash of red.

2. Anna’s Hummingbird

Anna’s Hummingbird is known for a vivid rose-pink crown and throat. Like other iridescent hummingbirds, that color depends on illumination and angle; a bird that looks glowing pink in direct light may look subdued when it turns away.

Anna’s appears in Cornell Lab’s North American hummingbird family list. The useful takeaway for identification is to treat the rose-pink head and throat as a light-sensitive combination, then check the rest of the bird and its location. Avoid assigning a species from crown color alone when the view is brief or backlit.

3. Costa’s Hummingbird

A male Costa’s Hummingbird has a purple gorget and crown whose feathers flare along the sides of the neck. That projecting, whisker-like silhouette is one of the species’ most memorable features. In weak light the purple can look nearly black, so the shape of the gorget may be more helpful than its exact hue.

Costa’s occupies dry and open habitats, including Sonoran and Mojave desert scrub and coastal California scrub. Cornell also notes that Costa’s readily visits feeders within its habitat. If you live outside those regions, a feeder will not create suitable habitat or make this species likely to appear; geography is the first filter.

4. Allen’s Hummingbird

Allen’s Hummingbird is striking for its contrast: a bronze-green back, coppery tail and belly, and a deep reddish-orange gorget. The warm copper tones can stand out even when the throat is not fully lit.

Its breeding range follows a relatively narrow coastal strip from California to southern Oregon. That restricted coastal setting is an important clue when separating Allen’s from a similar-looking Rufous Hummingbird. Females and immature birds of both species can be especially difficult to distinguish, so examine the spread tail rather than depending on overall rufous color.

5. Rufous Hummingbird

The Rufous Hummingbird is recognizable for its coppery-orange appearance and for an extraordinary seasonal journey. Cornell Lab reports a migration of about 4,000 miles to Mexico in an article updated in 2024. Cornell says this may be the longest migration relative to body size of any bird, a comparison that should be treated as “possibly,” not an absolute record.

Rufous and Allen’s females and immatures can look nearly interchangeable at a glance. When the tail is spread, Rufous has wider outer tail feathers; Allen’s has narrower outer tail feathers. That structural clue is more dependable than trying to judge whether a coppery bird is slightly redder or greener.

6. Broad-tailed Hummingbird

The male Broad-tailed Hummingbird has a rose-magenta throat, white breast, and green and buffy flanks. White tips on the tail can show when the bird is in flight, adding a useful flash to its otherwise compact green-and-pink appearance.

Because the gorget is iridescent, the shade of magenta will change with the bird’s angle. Look for the combination of a pale breast, buffy flank areas and the white tail tips rather than treating the throat color as a fixed paint sample.

7. Broad-billed Hummingbird

The Broad-billed Hummingbird stands out through a strong color contrast: the male’s blue throat and green belly are set against a bright red bill tipped in black. The bill is therefore as important as the gorget in recognizing this species.

When the bird is moving quickly, a red-and-black bill may be easier to notice than the blue throat. Check both features, and remember that changing light can mute the throat while leaving the bill’s pattern relatively conspicuous.

8. Rivoli’s Hummingbird

Rivoli’s Hummingbird is a comparatively large, dark-looking hummingbird. In good light its purple crown and emerald throat become visible, producing a deep jewel-toned effect rather than the bright scarlet associated with a Ruby-throated male.

Its range extends from the southwestern United States south to northern Nicaragua. That broad north-to-central range means location matters: a large, dark hummingbird with a purple crown should be evaluated in the context of where it was seen. Shade can make the crown and throat look much less colorful.

9. Violet-crowned Hummingbird

The Violet-crowned Hummingbird pairs clean white underparts with a violet crown and a long orange bill tipped in black. The clean contrast between white body, violet head and two-tone bill gives observers several clues at once.

Focus on bill length and pattern as well as the crown. A violet-looking head without the characteristic long orange-and-black bill is not enough for a confident identification, especially when the bird is distant or the light is uneven.

10. Calliope Hummingbird

Calliope Hummingbird is included among Cornell Lab’s North American hummingbirds and is widely regarded as a visually distinctive species. The material used for this guide does not establish a complete set of plumage details for a full profile, so identification should be confirmed with a current regional field guide that covers the bird’s range, sex and age classes.

For a brief sighting, record the date, location, apparent size, bill shape, tail pattern and any throat or crown color you saw. Those notes are more useful than forcing an identification from an incomplete view.

11. White-eared Hummingbird

White-eared Hummingbird is another distinctive species included in Cornell Lab’s North American family list. Specific plumage and range details are not established in the material used here, so do not infer a full identification from the name alone.

As with any hummingbird, document the entire pattern: head, throat, bill, back, underparts, tail and habitat. A local guide covering the sighting area can then supply the detailed comparison that a short observation requires.

How to tell similar hummingbirds apart

Start with location

Range and habitat are practical identification tools, not background trivia. A hummingbird in desert scrub should be compared with species known from desert habitats; one in coastal California has a different shortlist from one in the southwestern mountains. The same color can occur in unrelated species, while a species absent from the region can be ruled out immediately.

Check the gorget and crown together

Record the throat’s hue, outline and extent along the neck. Costa’s has side-flaring gorget feathers, while the male Ruby-throated shows a red throat that flashes under favorable light. Rivoli’s combines a purple crown with an emerald throat. These combinations are more informative than a single color word such as “red” or “green.”

Examine the bill

Note whether the bill is long or short, orange or red, black-tipped, straight or slightly downcurved. The Broad-billed’s red bill with a black tip and the Violet-crowned’s long orange bill with a black tip are especially useful examples of bill-based identification.

Use the tail for coppery birds

Allen’s and Rufous females and immatures are a classic problem. If you can see the spread tail, compare the outer feathers: Allen’s has narrower outer tail feathers, while Rufous has wider ones. This is a better diagnostic feature than judging the overall amount of copper in a poor photograph.

Account for sex and age

Adult males often carry the strongest gorget colors. Females and immature males may be green, gray or coppery without the adult male’s signature throat. Identify the bird’s sex and apparent age before rejecting a species because its expected color is missing.

Using feeders to see hummingbirds

A feeder can improve viewing opportunities for Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and, in suitable habitat, Costa’s Hummingbirds. It is not a universal lure for all 11 species, and the available information does not establish that feeders work equally well in every region.

Choose a feeder only after checking which hummingbirds occur locally. Keep the observation goal realistic: a feeder may bring a known local species closer, but it cannot substitute for the flowers, scrub, coastal vegetation or other habitat that determines whether a species is present. Natural tubular flowers are also part of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird’s documented feeding setting.

A practical checklist for a confident sighting

  1. Write down the exact location and habitat, such as desert scrub, coastal vegetation or a garden.
  2. Estimate size and note whether the bird looks compact or comparatively large and dark.
  3. Describe the crown and gorget separately, including how the colors changed as the bird moved.
  4. Record bill color, length, tip color and apparent curvature.
  5. Watch the tail in flight or during a spread; note copper tones, white tips and outer-feather width.
  6. Consider sex and age before using the absence of an adult male color as a deciding clue.
  7. Compare the complete combination with a regional field guide, using range as a final reality check.
