Bella, a Belgian Malinois and Mastiff mix known online as @bella_maligator, appeared to give plain celery the ultimate rejection: she chewed it, walked to an automatic trash can, triggered the lid with her head, and spit the vegetable inside.

The caption supplied the punchline: “Mom forgot the peanut butter!”

Bella’s celery review ended with a trip to the bin

In the video described by multiple reports, Bella’s owner asks whether she likes celery and offers her a small piece. Bella accepts it and chews for several seconds. Instead of dropping it where she stands, she approaches a motion-sensor trash can.

When Bella moves her head near the sensor, the lid opens. She then spits the celery into the bin. That sequence is what makes the clip so funny: Bella appears to reject the food while still taking responsibility for its disposal.

  • Highly Palatable with natural pork liver base
  • 500 treats per bag!
  • Only 1.5 calories per treat

Of course, the video does not establish that Bella understands household waste management or that she was deliberately making a joke. The human-like interpretation is part of the appeal, not a proven explanation of her thought process.

“Mom forgot the peanut butter!”

Bella’s caption suggests that the problem was not necessarily celery itself, but celery without a preferred topping. The caption read, “Mom forgot the peanut butter!” and the clip circulated with hashtags including #dogspitscelery, #bellatastetests, #celery, #dogspitsfood, and #automatictrashcan.

The story received a sequel. According to Daily Paws, a follow-up video appeared two days after the original and showed Bella being offered celery with peanut butter. Reports say she ate that version. One reproduction of the follow-up caption reads, “Thank you friends for helping me get my peanut butter,” alongside the hashtag #bellalikespeanutbutter.

Why the clip spread

The video combines three instantly readable details:

  1. A clear food verdict: Bella chews the celery, then rejects it.
  2. A purposeful-looking route: she walks to the trash can rather than simply dropping the piece.
  3. A perfectly timed prop: the automatic lid opens as she approaches, making the disposal look deliberate and practiced.

That produces a simple story viewers can understand without much context: Bella wanted peanut butter, did not want plain celery, and cleaned up after herself. Coverage also notes that other videos on Bella’s account show her taking various items to the garbage. Daily Paws suggested she may have been trained from a young age, but the available reporting does not establish the details of her training or prove that she was specifically taught to perform the behavior in this video.

How many people watched it?

Reported engagement numbers differ because the stories were published at different times and may reflect different platform snapshots or reposts:

  • Daily Paws reported more than 5.5 million views and over 900,000 likes in its February 3, 2023 coverage.
  • Later coverage described the video as having passed 9 million views.
  • A June 2024 report described Bella’s account as having more than 335,600 followers and 12.2 million likes at that time.

Those figures should be treated as dated reports, not as current TikTok totals. TikTok’s exact present-day counts were not independently verified, and the original platform page was not directly accessible during research.

The gadget behind Bella’s cleanup routine

The automatic trash can is more than background furniture: it is the physical detail that turns an ordinary food rejection into a memorable stunt. A sensor can opens its lid when it detects movement near the top, allowing Bella to dispose of the celery without touching the bin.

If Bella’s routine has you looking for one, an automatic trash can is the relevant product category. Sensor cans are sold in different shapes and capacities, including rectangular and semi-round designs and sizes around 45 or 58 liters. Some models also offer voice activation. However, there is no reliable evidence identifying the exact brand or model in Bella’s video, so it should not be called a particular manufacturer’s trash can.

Is celery safe for dogs?

Celery is generally considered safe for dogs as an occasional treat, but “safe” does not mean every dog will like it—or that it should replace a balanced diet. The American Kennel Club recommends offering bite-size pieces because celery can be a choking hazard, particularly for smaller dogs. Treats should also remain only a limited part of a dog’s daily food intake.

PetMD recommends washing celery, cutting it into small pieces, and removing tough strings. Introduce any new human food cautiously and watch for digestive upset. Dogs on prescription diets or with health conditions should be cleared by a veterinarian before receiving extra treats.

Bella’s reaction is therefore a matter of preference, not evidence that celery is harmful to dogs. Some dogs enjoy its crunch; others may reject it, especially when they are expecting something more appealing.

What about the peanut butter?

Peanut butter should not be treated as automatically dog-safe. PetMD advises choosing peanut butter that is sugar-free and xylitol-free, and preferably low in salt. Xylitol is dangerous to dogs, and some flavored spreads may contain other unsuitable ingredients. Products containing onion or garlic are also unsafe for dogs.

Always read the ingredient label before giving peanut butter to a pet, offer only a small amount, and ask a veterinarian about appropriate treats if your dog has allergies, a sensitive stomach, diabetes, or a prescription diet.

Did Bella really “clean up” after herself?

Visually, yes: the celery ends up inside the trash can. But the clip alone cannot tell us whether Bella understood the idea of cleaning up, was responding to training, was following a familiar routine, or simply happened to carry the unwanted food toward the bin. The safest description is that she appeared to dispose of it herself.

That careful wording does not make the moment less impressive. Bella’s timing, the sensor-operated lid, and the peanut-butter caption give viewers all the ingredients for a tiny canine restaurant review—and a very efficient complaint department.

Can dogs eat celery?

Celery is generally safe for dogs as an occasional treat when washed and cut into small, bite-size pieces. Remove strings, introduce it gradually, and ask a veterinarian first if your dog has a health condition or eats a prescription diet.

Was Bella’s trash can confirmed to be a Simplehuman model?

No. The available reporting does not identify the brand or model. Simplehuman makes sensor cans that illustrate the product category, but Bella’s exact bin should be described generically as an automatic or motion-sensor trash can.

The Bottom Line

Bella did not prove that dogs understand waste management—but she did deliver a remarkably clear verdict on plain celery. With a sensor trash can, a perfectly timed spit, and a promise that peanut butter would fix the problem, the Belgian Malinois–Mastiff mix turned a snack refusal into a viral cleanup routine.
