Christian Stoinev’s halftime act works because it is more than a dog trick show. First, Stoinev creates suspense by supporting his roughly 180-to-185-pound body in extraordinary hand-balancing positions. Then Percy or Milo—the tiny Chihuahuas at the center of the current routine—turns that display of strength into a funny, affectionate basketball story.

One moment Stoinev may be upside down with a Chihuahua standing on his feet. The next, Percy is balancing on basketballs or Milo is carrying a miniature basketball-shaped toy to a tiny hoop. The contrast is the whole point: circus-level physical skill provides the danger and drama, while the dogs provide the personality and payoff.

The act begins with Stoinev’s strength—but the dogs become its emotional center

Stoinev’s hand-balancing is not merely an introduction for the canine portion of the show. He can balance his body on one hand and has been described balancing on a finger inserted into a bottle. That control gives the routine its visual tension: the audience is already watching a difficult feat before a Chihuahua enters the picture.

When a dog climbs over him, stands on his feet during a handstand, or performs a basketball-themed trick, the scale makes the moment instantly readable from the stands. Stoinev is muscular, elevated, and apparently defying gravity; the Chihuahua is tiny, expressive, and seemingly fearless. The dogs are not decorative props. Their individual behavior is what turns an impressive acrobatic demonstration into a performance people remember.

Percy: climbing, balancing, and working the basketball theme

Percy joined Stoinev’s family in 2011 after being brought from Mexico. He became the principal canine performer as the original dog in the act, Scooby, grew older and retired.

Percy’s material is built around movement and balance. He climbs over Stoinev’s body, stands on his feet while Stoinev performs a handstand, and balances or walks on basketballs. In one documented performance at the 2022 NCAA Women’s Final Four in Minneapolis, Percy remained on Stoinev during a somersault and then moved to his feet while Stoinev held a handstand.

That sequence illustrates why Percy fits so naturally into a basketball arena. His tricks are not random behaviors inserted between acrobatics. They echo the venue’s central object—the basketball—while using Stoinev’s body as a moving stage.

Milo: the Chihuahua with the miniature dunk

Milo represents a newer generation of the act, but he is not simply a smaller replacement for Percy or Scooby. His signature routine developed from something he appeared to enjoy naturally: carrying a small basketball-shaped plush toy.

Stoinev shaped that interest into a recognizable performance. Milo stands on his hind legs while carrying the toy and places or “dunks” it into a miniature basketball hoop. The trick is funny because it compresses the entire arena experience into a few inches: a tiny Chihuahua, a tiny ball, and a tiny version of the sport’s defining move.

It also shows the logic behind Stoinev’s choreography. Rather than making every dog perform the same behavior, he observes what each dog seems motivated to do and builds material around that tendency. Percy’s act emphasizes climbing and balance; Milo has his own basketball-carrying and dunking identity.

The act’s origin: Scooby walked into the routine

The partnership began with Scooby, Stoinev’s first Chihuahua. The family’s traveling lifestyle made a small dog a practical companion, and Scooby began spending time around Stoinev while he practiced.

During one of those sessions, Scooby naturally walked across Stoinev’s body and made a distinctive paw movement. Stoinev and his father recognized that the behavior could become part of the act. What began as an apparently spontaneous interaction was gradually shaped into a routine, and Stoinev was performing “Christian and Scooby” while still a teenager.

The name continued after Scooby retired as a tribute to the dog who created the partnership. Scooby later died at age 17, according to published pet-focused coverage; the sources reviewed do not establish an exact date of death. Percy and Milo therefore belong to a continuing act with a name rooted in its first canine performer.

Who is Christian Stoinev?

Stoinev is a fifth-generation circus performer. He grew up traveling with his family, whose members included circus performers, and began training in acrobatics as a child. His early disciplines included hand balancing, juggling, unicycling, and other circus skills.

He later became known for hand-balancing performances, appearances on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, and regular work at basketball halftime events. He reached the top 12 during one America’s Got Talent run and later appeared on America’s Got Talent: The Champions. Stoinev and Percy also won Germany’s Das Supertalent in 2019.

The act has appeared at NBA and college basketball events. Published accounts have also described appearances connected with NFL, MLB, and soccer events by 2022. Those are documented past categories of work, not a promise of a current schedule. Likewise, a historical report of more than 500 Las Vegas variety-show appearances per year should not be presented as a verified current total.

How the dogs are prepared for advanced tricks

The available accounts describe a gradual process rather than suddenly asking a dog to perform a dangerous-looking stunt. Dogs begin with simpler positions and substantial support. One example is sitting on Stoinev’s feet while he performs a lower-risk inversion, with a spotter present. Only after the movement becomes familiar does the training progress toward more demanding or less-supported positions.

Stoinev has described conditioning the dogs slowly so that the movement patterns become familiar. Observation is equally important: he watches what a particular dog naturally enjoys and uses that behavior as the foundation for choreography. Milo’s miniature basketball routine grew from his interest in carrying a plush toy, while Percy’s material reflects his comfort with climbing and balancing.

That distinction matters for anyone watching the act with a pet at home. The performance does not demonstrate that every Chihuahua should balance on a person, stand on basketballs, or perform an inversion. It demonstrates the value of incremental learning, close observation, and adapting a behavior to the individual dog.

The sources reviewed do not provide a complete welfare protocol, veterinary-supervision schedule, rehearsal duration, or specific reward system. Those details should not be assumed. Advanced performance work requires expertise that goes well beyond buying a prop and copying a televised routine.

Why the routine is so effective in a basketball arena

The show is designed for immediate visual communication. A halftime audience may be watching from far away, and the performance has only a short window to make its premise clear. Stoinev’s inverted body creates a large, unmistakable frame. The Chihuahua’s small size supplies the surprise. The basketballs, hoop, and arena setting tie the separate tricks together.

The result is a sequence with three layers:

  1. Physical suspense: Stoinev’s one-handed and inverted balancing establishes real-looking risk and control.
  2. Novelty and humor: A Chihuahua climbing over an acrobat or standing on his feet is unexpected, especially in a basketball venue.
  3. A recognizable payoff: Percy’s ball work and Milo’s miniature dunk give the audience a simple action to follow and celebrate.

The routine is also concentrated. The Washington Post reported that a typical performance ran under seven minutes. That brevity is an advantage in an arena: the act can deliver a complete beginning, escalation, and payoff without asking a crowd to follow a long narrative.

What makes Percy and Milo feel like partners rather than accessories

The strongest moments are collaborative. Stoinev supplies the stable platform, timing, and physical control, but the dogs determine whether the partnership feels alive. Percy’s movement across Stoinev’s body changes the shape of the act. Milo’s decision to carry and place the toy gives his routine a comic character of its own.

That is why the dogs read as performers with distinct roles. Stoinev is not simply displaying two trained animals; he is presenting a partnership in which each dog contributes a different behavior. The audience can understand the division immediately: Stoinev creates the impossible-looking structure, Percy navigates it, and Milo delivers the miniature basketball finale.

From circus family tradition to crowd-friendly halftime story

Stoinev’s background explains the technical foundation, but the Chihuahuas explain the act’s broad appeal. Circus skills can be astonishing without being emotionally intimate. A tiny dog that appears confident while standing on an upside-down performer adds vulnerability, humor, and personality to the spectacle.

Scooby started the partnership through a behavior Stoinev noticed and developed. Percy carried the act into major basketball settings with climbing and ball-balancing material. Milo added a new signature by turning a favorite toy into a miniature dunk. Across those changes, the name “Christian and Scooby” remains a tribute to the original dog, while the later dogs keep the performance evolving.

That combination is what makes the halftime show must-watch: the acrobatics earn the audience’s attention, but Percy and Milo give it a reason to stay. They transform a display of human strength and balance into a short, themed story about trust, timing, and two very small dogs taking over a very large arena.

What is Milo’s signature trick?

Milo carries a small basketball-shaped plush toy while standing on his hind legs and places or “dunks” it into a miniature basketball hoop.

Can I train my Chihuahua to perform the same stunts?

The show should not be copied as a household stunt routine. Stoinev’s dogs were prepared gradually for professional performance, and the available sources do not establish a complete welfare or veterinary protocol. Pet owners should stick to low-risk, reward-based tricks and consult a qualified trainer for any unusual behavior.

The Bottom Line

Christian Stoinev’s halftime show succeeds because its parts reinforce one another: elite hand balancing creates the platform, Percy brings climbing and basketball balance, and Milo supplies the miniature dunk. The dogs’ individual personalities—and the act’s careful adaptation to what each dog naturally enjoys—make the spectacle feel like a genuine partnership rather than a collection of tricks.
