Owning a dog can bring companionship, more regular walks and outdoor time, and chances for social contact. Some studies also link dog ownership with better health outcomes, but they show associations, not proof that a dog makes its owner healthier or longer-lived. Whether a dog is worth it depends on whether your time, budget, household and daily routine can support the dog over its lifetime.
The benefits that are well supported
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that “Dogs can have many positive effects on the lives of their owners,” and its guidance on dogs and pets describes companionship, active lifestyles and possible stress relief as the main ways dogs help people. The benefits below are real possibilities, but each depends on how the dog is actually kept.
Companionship and stress relief
CDC guidance says dogs provide companionship and may help relieve stress and anxiety. Its broader pet guidance also links pets with possibly reduced loneliness and anxiety. These are possible effects. A dog is not a treatment for a diagnosed mental health condition, and anyone dealing with one should keep working with a clinician.
More chances to walk and be outdoors
Walking and playing with a dog create a regular reason to leave the house and be active. The benefit depends on the owner doing the walks. Owning a dog does not, by itself, mean more exercise, and the guidance does not measure how much extra activity owners get.

- Versatile for Any Activity: Park walks, trail hikes, or yard training. Offers ideal balance of freedom and control. Comes in 4ft, 5ft, 6ft lengths and 12 colors. 3/8" diameter suits small to medium dogs – lightweight and non-bulky. For medium and large dogs, choose 1/2" diameter
Social contact
Walking a dog can lead to conversations with neighbours, other dog walkers and people at parks. CDC guidance describes this as an opportunity to socialize. It does not say how often it happens, and it does not guarantee that an owner will feel less isolated.
Children’s development
CDC guidance describes positive effects of dogs on children’s social, emotional and cognitive development. This is a description of what guidance reports, not a measured outcome for every child in every household.

What the studies show, and where they stop
Two kinds of evidence are usually cited for dog ownership: studies of mental health in children and larger reviews of mortality. Both are observational, which means they compare people who have dogs with people who do not. They can show that the two tend to occur together. They cannot, on their own, show that the dog caused the difference.

| CDC-published cross-sectional study of children, 2015 | Whether having a pet dog at home was related to childhood anxiety | Having a pet dog at home was associated with a decreased probability of childhood anxiety | An association at one point in time. The authors state that future studies must establish whether the relationship is causal and, if so, how dogs might alleviate anxiety. |
| Dog Ownership and Survival: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis, 2019 (indexed by PubMed) | Dog ownership and survival across 10 studies with 3,837,005 participants and a mean follow-up of 10.1 years | 24% lower relative risk of all-cause mortality (RR 0.76; 95% CI 0.67–0.86). 31% lower relative risk of cardiovascular death (RR 0.69; 95% CI 0.67–0.71). | Pooled observational estimates, not causal effects. The review’s abstract notes that the analyses might not have been adjusted for confounders. |

Why the longevity figures are not a dog effect
The 2019 meta-analysis reports lower mortality among dog owners, including a 31% lower relative risk of cardiovascular death. That number is the pooled result of observational studies. People who choose to own dogs may differ from people who do not in income, activity level, health or where they live, and those differences can affect survival on their own. The review’s authors flag that such adjustments may not have been made in every study. A fair summary is that dog owners in these studies tended to live longer, and that the cause of that pattern is not established.

The childhood anxiety finding
The 2015 study found an association between a pet dog at home and less childhood anxiety. It is a useful signal for families who already have a dog. It does not show that adopting a dog prevents or treats anxiety in a child, and it does not say which features of dog ownership, such as routine, exercise or companionship, might be responsible.
The costs and obligations that come with the benefits
Every benefit above depends on the owner meeting the dog’s needs. Before deciding, be realistic about:

Health and safety risks, and how to reduce them
CDC guidance warns that dogs can carry germs even when they look healthy, and that bites can cause pain, injury and infection. A CDC page published June 15, 2026 states that nearly 1 in 5 people bitten by a dog requires medical attention. That figure describes people who have been bitten, not the likelihood for any particular household.
Practical steps to reduce the risks
- Match the dog to your lifestyle. Choose a dog whose energy, size and temperament fit your home, and ask a veterinarian before choosing.
- Keep up routine veterinary care. Regular checkups are the simplest way to catch problems early.
- Wash your hands after handling a dog, its food, toys or supplies.
- Supervise young children around dogs, including the family’s own dog. Do not leave a young child alone with any dog.
- Socialize the dog and use a leash in public. CDC guidance says responsible ownership, socialization and leash use help prevent bites.
How to decide whether a dog fits your life
There is no universal health prescription to get a dog. A dog can add companionship and movement to a life, but the benefit is only realized when the household can care for the animal well. Before adopting, check whether you can:

If you are comparing a dog with other pets, use these same practical questions. Published guidance does not compare dogs with other kinds of pets on these measures, so there is no evidence-based ranking to rely on. For context, the CDC estimates that around 38% of U.S. households have one or more dogs (CDC page published June 15, 2026). That figure reports how common dog ownership is, not whether dogs improve health.
