Yes. Slender lorises—known in Kannada as kaadu papa, or “forest babies”—have been documented in some of Bengaluru’s remaining green spaces, including the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) campus mini-forest. That confirms their presence in particular habitat patches, not a stable or growing citywide population: no official Bengaluru census is established by the available reporting, and commonly repeated sighting figures are historical.
What are Bengaluru’s “forest babies”?
They are slender lorises: small, nocturnal primates that live in trees. The Kannada name kaadu papa translates as “forest baby” or “forest infant.” A 2022 Quartz report used the nickname while describing lorises recorded by the Urban Slender Loris Project in Bengaluru.

Although the nickname sounds affectionate, lorises are wild animals, not pets. Their presence in an urban green patch depends on habitat and should not be taken as evidence that they can thrive in homes or tolerate handling.
Are slender lorises still found in Bengaluru?
Yes, reports from IISc identify its campus mini-forest as one of the city’s remaining green spaces supporting lorises. IISc’s account presents it as a refuge within an urban landscape, not proof of a citywide population trend.

There is no established current census in the cited reporting. Quartz reported that the project had recorded 61 lorises over six months; that is a historical project count, not the number of lorises in Bengaluru, a formal population estimate, or a current total. The reporting also noted that the city had no official census.
What habitat do lorises need in the city?
Slender lorises are arboreal and use dense vegetation and connected tree cover. IISc’s profile also describes them feeding on insects and fruit. These needs help explain why isolated green patches and breaks in canopy matter: a patch may provide habitat, but the available sources do not establish a minimum patch size, a survival threshold, or a formal ranking of Bengaluru sites.

Construction and urban development can shrink or fragment green spaces; the lorises’ reported presence is therefore not evidence that construction has had no effect. IISc visiting scientist Kaberi Kar Gupta described the wider conservation value of protecting occupied patches: “If we can identify and conserve the patches where lorises are found, we may be able to conserve a lot of other urban biodiversity within those patches,” IISc reported in 2015.

What is known about the Bengaluru loris project?
The Urban Slender Loris Project began in 2014 as a citizen-science initiative. IISc’s 2022 account connects the project with lorises in the campus mini-forest. The project’s volunteer page describes training people for night surveys and for basic recording of behavior and habitat.

Volunteer surveys are a way to contribute to observation, not a substitute for a census. For current participation details, consult the project’s Get Involved page; the page describes survey training, but the available reporting does not establish current survey coverage or a current sightings total.
How can residents help protect them?
- Protect connected vegetation. Support the retention and care of dense tree cover and green patches, especially where conservation groups or land managers have identified habitat value.
- Do not publish exact sighting locations. Project staff have withheld locations for animal safety. The New Indian Express quoted Gupta in 2016: “We DO NOT want to disclose any locations for the safety of the animals,” the newspaper reported. Avoid sharing coordinates, precise directions, or identifiable photographs that reveal a refuge.
- Leave wild animals undisturbed. Do not handle, feed, capture, or try to move a loris. A nocturnal animal seen in vegetation should not be treated as a pet or an invitation to approach.
- Consider trained volunteer work. The project describes volunteer training for night survey methods and basic habitat and behavior recording. Follow its current instructions rather than surveying independently or publicizing sensitive locations.
Historical reporting also described poaching and harmful ritual use as threats. Those reports are warnings, not measurements of how common such practices are today.

What the available evidence does not establish
The records cited here support the conclusion that lorises have been found in some Bengaluru green spaces, including IISc’s mini-forest. They do not establish the city’s current population size, whether that population is increasing or declining, or how many habitat patches remain suitable. A global conservation assessment, even when applicable to a species, would not answer those local abundance questions.
