Best 5-Gallon Aquarium Tanks: Top Kits for Bettas, Shrimp, and Planted Nanos

The Fluval Spec V is the best overall 5-gallon aquarium kit for most shoppers who want a polished planted-nano, shrimp, or single-betta setup. For a lower-cost beginner package, choose the Aqueon LED MiniBow 5; for hidden equipment and a tidy desktop appearance, choose the Marineland Portrait. Experienced aquascapers will get more control from a bare glass tank with separately chosen equipment.

The Fluval Spec V is the best all-around 5-gallon aquarium kit for most shoppers who want a polished planted-nano, shrimp, or single-betta setup. Its long rectangular footprint, integrated three-stage filtration, oversized media, and 7,000K LED make better use of five gallons than many taller desktop tanks. The main drawbacks are its premium price and variable availability.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For other priorities, the Marineland Portrait Desktop Kit is the tidiest-looking option, the Aqueon LED MiniBow 5 with SmartClean is the most beginner-friendly budget kit, and a bare 5- or 5.5-gallon glass tank is the best choice for experienced aquascapers who want to select every component themselves. None of these kits should be treated as automatically ready for fish: you still need to establish the nitrogen cycle, manage temperature and flow, and choose livestock appropriate for a small aquarium.

Pick Tank and material Filtration and lighting Best for Main compromise

Best budget kit Aqueon LED MiniBow 5 with SmartClean, acrylic Compact power filter; low-profile LED hood Beginners who want included supplies and easier water changes Curved acrylic is more prone to scratching and less flexible for aquascaping
Best customizable route Open 5- or 5.5-gallon glass tank Choose the filter, light, lid, and heater separately Experienced keepers and aquascapers Requires compatibility checks and several separate purchases
Near-5-gallon betta alternative Fluval Betta Premium, 6 gallons nominally / about 5 gallons of swim volume Diffusion chamber, shaded-style LED, foam filtration Betta keepers who want softened flow It is not literally a 5-gallon tank

1. Fluval Spec V: best overall 5-gallon aquarium

The Fluval Spec V is the strongest default recommendation when presentation, filtration, and a useful footprint matter more than the lowest purchase price. Fluval lists it at 5 U.S. gallons, or 19 liters, and gives it a longer rectangular shape rather than a tall cube. That extra horizontal orientation is useful for planted layouts and gives a betta more practical swimming length.

Wonderfactory 5 Gallon Small Aquarium Set Glass Fish Tank 6 Gallon, Starter Kit with Heater Water Pump Cleaning System Filter Bright Light Rocks Gravel Cleaning Tool, Clear Rimless Betta Plants
  • 🐠 ALL-IN-ONE AQUARIUM KIT, PACKED WITH VALUE - Comes complete with HD float 6 gallon glass tank, heater, hang on back filter with media, COB light, substrate sand, rocks, 5-in-1 cleaning tool set — just unpack, add water, and introduce your fish! The complete starter kit for instant aquatic enjoyment.
  • 🔥 KEEPS TROPICAL & COLD-SENSITIVE FISH COMFORTABLE - Unlike most aquarium kits, ours comes with a reliable heater—essential for keeping delicate fish warm and healthy year-round.
  • ✨ PREMIUM CRYSTAL-CLEAR GLASS FOR AN IMMERSIVE VIEW - Crafted from ultra-clear 5mm thick HD glass with 92% light transmittance, this tank offers a stunning, distortion-free view of your fish.
  • 🌊 ADVANCED FILTRATION FOR CLEAN WATER - The included hang-on-back filter features both mechanical and biological filtration - sponge for debris and ceramic rings for impurities, harmful chemicals removal. This system keeps your tank water clean and clear, while enhancing oxygen exchange for healthier aquatic life.
  • ⚠️ IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDER - Do not bury the heater in sand or substrate. Keep at least 2 inches of clearance from the water surface. Always ensure the heater is fully submerged before plugging it in. Unplug the heater and let it cool for 10–20 minutes before removing it from the tank for cleaning or water changes.

The rear compartment contains three filtration stages: foam for mechanical filtration, activated carbon, and BioMax biological media. Fluval also specifies oversized media, which is a useful advantage in a small aquarium where stable biological filtration matters. The 7,000K LED is housed in a waterproof aluminum casing and is marketed as a high-output light. That does not mean it will grow every demanding plant; treat it as most suitable for lower-light to moderate planted setups unless you verify a particular plant’s requirements.

Why buy it: It is the most complete-looking and planted-friendly exact five-gallon kit in this group.

What to watch: The rear filtration chamber takes up some interior width, and maintenance is more involved than swapping a simple external sponge filter. Flow must also be observed after setup rather than assumed to be suitable for every betta.

Price and stock are volatile. The research snapshot found the U.S. manufacturer page showing the model out of stock, while a retailer listing showed black and white versions at $124.99. Check the exact color and seller before buying.

2. Marineland Portrait Desktop Kit: best for a clean desktop display

The Marineland Portrait five-gallon kit is a glass aquarium built around appearance. Its filtration equipment is concealed in a rear compartment, leaving the display area visually uncluttered. The kit includes hidden three-stage filtration, a Rite-Size Z cartridge, Marineland Bio-Foam, an adjustable-flow pump, and energy-efficient LEDs.

The lighting offers white, blue-only, and off settings, and a sliding canopy gives access for feeding and dosing without removing a large hood. Those details make the Portrait appealing in an office, bedroom, or other place where the aquarium needs to look tidy from several angles.

The tradeoff is its vertical “Portrait” orientation. It occupies less horizontal desk space, but a tall tank is not as convenient for a long aquascape or horizontal swimmer as the Spec V or a conventional rectangular glass tank. The adjustable pump is helpful for a betta, but adjust it while watching the fish and surface movement; “adjustable” does not automatically mean gentle enough at every setting.

Why buy it: It offers the cleanest hidden-equipment presentation among the exact five-gallon kits here.

  • 【𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚, 𝐅𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬】After the initial sponge filter, we've added ceramic rings and quartz balls to create a paradise for beneficial bacteria. This creates a clear and stable environment where your aquatic friends can thrive, and far less work for you
  • 【𝟕𝟖°𝐅 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐓𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 & 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬】The included heater creates a stable, ideal 78°F world for your Betta fish and tropical fish to thrive. The clear LED thermometer instantly confirms the perfect conditions, so you can sit back and enjoy watching your fish swim happily

The 3.5 gallon swimming space is an ideal home for a Betta, small schooling fish (like Cardinal Tetra or Zebra Danios), and ornamental shrimp (such as Red Cherry or Blue Velvet)

What to watch: Do not buy it solely for its appearance if your main goal is a long planted layout. There is also no evidence in the supplied specifications to call it silent, maintenance-free, or automatically betta-safe.

3. Aqueon LED MiniBow 5 with SmartClean: best budget kit

The Aqueon MiniBow 5 is the practical choice for a first-time owner who wants a kit with more setup items included and an easier routine water-change system. The package includes the acrylic aquarium vessel, low-profile LED hood, elevated base, power filter, small filter cartridge, fish food, water conditioner, and setup guide.

Its SmartClean feature uses a swiveling drain nozzle intended to simplify partial water changes. Aqueon says the process can take less than two minutes; that is a manufacturer claim about the feature, not an independent performance measurement. You will still need a suitable bucket, treated replacement water, and enough care not to disturb livestock or spill water.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The aquarium itself is approximately 14 inches long by 9.5 inches wide by 13.25 inches high. Aqueon lists filled weight at about 55 pounds, although substrate and decorations change the final weight. Place it on a level, sturdy surface that can safely support the filled aquarium.

Why buy it: It keeps the initial shopping list short and makes routine water changes less intimidating.

What to watch: Acrylic is lighter and more impact-resistant than glass in some situations, but it scratches more easily. Use aquarium-safe cleaning tools rather than household scrubbers. The curved-front vessel also gives you less freedom than a standard rectangular tank when planning plants and hardscape.

The MiniBow is not a complete temperature-control system. Its heater is an optional, separately sold component, so do not assume the included conditioner or filter makes it ready for tropical fish. A retailer snapshot listed the black five-gallon kit at $72.95; treat that as a time-sensitive price rather than a specification.

4. Open 5- or 5.5-gallon glass tank: best for customization

An open glass tank is the best route for an experienced keeper who does not want to accept the compromises of an all-in-one kit. You can select a low-flow sponge filter for shrimp, an adjustable hang-on-back filter for a particular layout, a separate planted-tank light, a glass lid, an appropriately sized heater, and the substrate and hardscape you actually want.

AQUANEAT Fish Tank, 1 Gallon Betta Fish Tank, Small Aquarium Kit with LED Light and Water Filter Pump
  • Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
  • Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
  • Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
  • Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
  • Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)

This category is more flexible than any single bundled product, but it is not a single recommendation with guaranteed component compatibility. Before buying, verify the tank’s internal dimensions, rim design, lid fit, filter clearance, heater placement, and the strength and levelness of the furniture supporting it. Open tanks also need a plan for evaporation and livestock that might jump.

Why buy it: You get maximum control over flow, lighting, maintenance access, and aquascape design.

What to watch: The apparent low price of a bare tank can disappear once you add filtration, light, lid, heater, thermometer, conditioner, test supplies, and maintenance equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Near-5-gallon alternative: Fluval Betta Premium

The Fluval Betta Premium deserves consideration if your specific goal is a single-betta aquarium, but it should not be counted as an exact five-gallon tank. Fluval describes it as a 6-U.S.-gallon / 22.7-liter maximum-volume aquarium with approximately 5 U.S. gallons / 18.9 liters of swim volume.

Its diffusion chamber is designed to disperse the return flow, and the kit includes a shaded-style LED and foam filter block. Those features address two common betta concerns: excessive current and harsh lighting. Even so, suitability depends on the individual fish, the final water movement, temperature, cycling, décor, and water quality. Observe the betta after setup rather than relying on the product category alone.

How to choose the right five-gallon tank

Choose the footprint before the accessories

Five gallons describes volume, not usable shape. A longer tank generally gives more horizontal swimming and aquascaping area than a tall tank of similar capacity. Choose the Spec V or a conventional rectangular glass tank for a long planted layout; choose the Portrait when a narrow, vertical desktop presentation is more important.

Separate filtration from flow

Every tank needs mechanical and biological filtration, but “has a filter” is not the same as “has appropriate flow.” A filter that moves too much water can stress a betta, disturb shrimp, or uproot plants. Look for adjustable flow, a diffuser, a sponge prefilter, or a return that can be redirected. After filling the aquarium, check whether livestock would have calm areas and whether the surface is moving without producing a strong current throughout the tank.

Check what the box really includes

Most kits provide a tank, lid or canopy, light, and filter. They often do not provide a heater, thermometer, test kit, siphon, substrate, or décor. The included filter cartridge is also a consumable or replaceable part, not a substitute for maintaining biological media indefinitely. Read the current listing for the exact model and variant because package contents can change.

What you still need for a responsible setup

  • Heater and thermometer: Needed for tropical livestock unless the room and species make temperature control unnecessary. Select equipment appropriate for the actual water volume and follow its safety instructions.
  • Water conditioner: Use a product designed for the source water and follow its label. The MiniBow includes conditioner, but other kits or current variants may not.
  • Liquid aquarium test kit: Test ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate while establishing and maintaining the aquarium. Test results are more useful than guessing from clear-looking water.
  • Substrate and décor: Choose aquarium-safe materials, avoid sharp edges, and leave open swimming space. Live plants are optional, although they can improve the appearance and provide cover.
  • Small siphon or gravel vacuum: A 1- to 5-gallon siphon is easier to control than a full-size model during partial water changes.
  • Replacement media: Confirm the correct cartridge, foam block, or biological media for the filter you buy. Do not replace all established biological media at once unless the manufacturer’s instructions and your maintenance plan call for it.
  • Safe support: The filled aquarium, substrate, and décor are heavy. Use a level, stable surface; the MiniBow’s approximate filled weight alone is listed at 55 pounds before extra décor.

Cycle the aquarium before adding livestock

A new filter does not contain an established biological community simply because it is switched on. Set up the aquarium, condition the water, and establish the nitrogen cycle before stocking fish or invertebrates. Use a test kit to monitor the relevant nitrogen compounds and follow a reliable fishless-cycling protocol rather than adding an animal to “start” the cycle.

Do not add livestock just because the water looks clear or because the kit included food and conditioner. The cycle, temperature, flow, and species requirements all matter. If you cannot test the water or do not yet have a plan for maintenance, delay stocking.

What can live in a 5-gallon aquarium?

A five-gallon aquarium is best treated as a small single-species or invertebrate setup, not a community tank. A single betta may be appropriate when the aquarium is cycled, heated as needed, filtered gently, and maintained consistently. Shrimp or other suitable invertebrates can also work when water parameters, cover, and tank maturity meet their needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid using five gallons for goldfish, multiple territorial fish, or a mixed community simply because several animals are physically small. Stocking depends on species, adult size, behavior, temperature, filtration, and maintenance capacity. The safest recommendation is to choose one appropriate centerpiece animal or a carefully researched invertebrate setup, not to maximize the number of occupants.

Which tank should you buy?

  • Choose the Fluval Spec V if you want the strongest exact five-gallon all-in-one option for a planted nano, shrimp, or single-betta display and can accept the higher price.
  • Choose the Marineland Portrait if concealed equipment and a tidy vertical desktop display matter more than horizontal aquascaping space.
  • Choose the Aqueon MiniBow 5 if you are a beginner on a tighter budget and value included starter supplies and easier water changes.
  • Choose an open glass tank if you already understand cycling and want to tune every component to your livestock and aquascape.
  • Consider the Fluval Betta Premium if you want softened flow for a betta and are comfortable buying a six-gallon nominal kit rather than an exact five-gallon aquarium.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best 5-gallon aquarium tank overall?

The Fluval Spec V is the best overall exact five-gallon kit because it combines a longer planted-friendly footprint with integrated three-stage filtration, oversized media, and a 7,000K LED. Its premium price and changing availability are the main drawbacks.

Can a betta live in a 5-gallon aquarium?

Yes, but only for an appropriate single-species or invertebrate setup. A cycled, heated and gently filtered five-gallon tank may suit one betta; shrimp and other suitable invertebrates may also work. It is not a good general community aquarium.

Do 5-gallon aquarium kits include heaters?

Usually not. The supplied kit descriptions do not establish that the Fluval Spec V or Marineland Portrait includes a heater, and Aqueon’s documentation identifies the MiniBow heater as optional and sold separately. Check the exact current listing before buying.

What is the best budget 5-gallon aquarium?

The Aqueon MiniBow 5 with SmartClean is the best budget-oriented kit for beginners. It includes the vessel, hood, base, filter, cartridge, food, conditioner, and setup guide, plus a drain feature intended to simplify partial water changes.

Is the Fluval Betta Premium a five-gallon aquarium?

The Fluval Betta Premium has approximately five gallons of swim volume but is a six-gallon aquarium by maximum nominal capacity. It is better described as a near-five-gallon betta alternative, not an exact five-gallon tank.

The Bottom Line

Best overall: Fluval Spec V. Best value for beginners: Aqueon LED MiniBow 5 with SmartClean. Best-looking desktop design: Marineland Portrait. Whichever tank you choose, budget separately for temperature control, testing, maintenance tools, and a proper cycle before adding livestock.
