Ferplast Risto Pet Smart and OWON SPF2300-6L-WB are smaller 6-liter options with clearly stated sensing or alarm features. Xiaomi’s 1.8-kilogram feeder is a fit warning: its own specification says it is not recommended for large dogs.

The table is a screening tool, not a performance ranking. A larger hopper reduces refills only when the dispenser can meter the dog’s food safely and the kibble fits its mechanism.

Start with the dog’s ration, not the hopper label
Convert capacity into feeding days
Liters measure volume, while your dog’s meal plan is normally expressed by weight or a measured cup. Food density varies by recipe, so a 15-liter hopper cannot be translated into a reliable number of days without the specific kibble’s density and the dog’s daily ration.
Use this calculation before buying:
Estimated days between refills = usable food mass in the hopper ÷ the dog’s total daily ration.
For a feeder that publishes only liters, weigh a known volume of the exact food you use. Fill a measuring container with that kibble, weigh it, and use the result to estimate the hopper’s mass. Leave a margin for the portion of the hopper that the mechanism cannot pick up and for the possibility that a large dog’s ration changes.
Interpret the SimplePets figure carefully
SimplePets states 20 liters and “up to 17 lb or 68 cups.” Those are manufacturer figures, not an independently verified capacity test, and they should not be treated as a universal conversion for other foods. Check whether your own kibble occupies a similar volume and whether the stated amount would cover the dog’s ration without leaving the feeder unattended for an unsafe period.
Plan for refill and care intervals
A feeder is not a substitute for a person checking the dog. Choose a refill interval that lets you inspect the food, bowl, cord, lid and dispensing opening regularly. A high-volume dog may empty a nominally large hopper much sooner than a small dog, while a lower-density food can occupy more space for the same mass.

Kibble size and food type determine whether dispensing works
Measure the actual pieces from the food bag, including unusually large pieces. Do not rely on the label “large-breed formula” as proof that every feeder will accept it.
- Ferplast Risto Pet Smart specifies a maximum kibble diameter of 12 mm.
- OWON SPF2300-6L-WB lists dry or freeze-dried pieces from 2 to 15 mm.
- Xiaomi specifies a 12 mm maximum, warns that pieces that are too large or too small can block the mechanism, and excludes freeze-dried or special-shaped food.
- Hombli and SimplePets provide the capacity and feature information cited here, but the supplied product descriptions do not establish a comparable kibble-size range. Obtain the current manual or specification before assuming oversized kibble will pass.
Several of these dispensers are dry-food products. Ferplast excludes wet food, and OWON excludes wet and semi-moist food. Xiaomi excludes freeze-dried food as well as special-shaped pieces. If your dog eats canned, fresh, raw, semi-moist or irregular food, a dry hopper feeder is the wrong category unless the manufacturer expressly supports that food and provides a safe storage and cleaning method.

Power, internet and outage behavior are separate questions
Power failure
Ask whether the unit has an included battery, an optional battery, or no stated backup. Hombli’s backup batteries are optional and not included; the company warns that functions may be limited while running on battery. Ferplast lists mains and battery power. SimplePets lists a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. OWON lists low-battery alarms, but the cited page does not establish how long dispensing continues during an outage.
A battery indicator does not tell you whether scheduled meals, the motor, Wi-Fi, camera, audio or alerts all remain available. Read the model’s manual for the exact fallback behavior and test it before relying on the feeder during travel or a storm.
Internet loss
An internet outage is not the same as a power outage. A feeder may retain local schedules while the app, camera, notifications or remote manual-feed command are unavailable. Before leaving, disconnect the router or use the manufacturer’s offline test procedure and confirm that the next scheduled meal still dispenses.

Camera and audio are convenience features
Hombli includes remote camera adjustment, night vision and two-way audio. SimplePets lists video monitoring. These features can help you observe the bowl, but they do not confirm that the correct mass was dispensed, that the dog ate it, or that the mechanism cannot jam. Treat the camera as an observation aid rather than a feeding guarantee.
Stability, access and large-dog ergonomics
Prevent tipping and paw access
Large dogs can nose, paw or shoulder a lightweight feeder. Look for a broad footprint, anti-slip or non-skid feet, a lockable lid and a dispensing opening that cannot be reached easily from above. Hombli lists anti-slip feet and a lockable lid; SimplePets lists a non-skid base and lock-tight lid; Ferplast lists a locking lid. Those are design claims, not a guarantee against a particular dog’s behavior.
Choose a workable bowl height
Hombli offers interchangeable 10 cm or 20 cm legs. OWON offers an optional heightening bracket. For other models in this comparison, bowl height is not stated in the supplied specifications. Measure the dog’s normal bowl position and leave enough clearance for the shoulders and muzzle without making the unit easier to push over.
Secure the cord and surrounding area
Route the power cable behind furniture or through a protected channel where the dog cannot chew it. Keep the feeder on a level, dry surface, away from doors, heating vents and water bowls that could splash into the mechanism. A stable placement also makes portion and blockage checks more consistent.

Hombli Smart Pet Feeder XL: adjustable height and the most complete observation package
Hombli describes the XL as a 15-liter feeder for medium and large dogs. Its removable tank and bowl simplify emptying, and the dishwasher-safe steel bowl, desiccant and lockable lid address routine hygiene and freshness. The 10 cm and 20 cm leg options are useful when a low bowl would be awkward for a tall dog.

The app provides scheduling, while the camera can be adjusted remotely and supports night vision and two-way audio. Those functions require more electronics and a network connection than a simple timer, so decide whether remote observation is worth the additional setup. Backup batteries are optional, not included, and Hombli says battery mode can limit functionality. Confirm exactly which meals and alerts remain active before purchase.

A rechargeable lithium-ion battery, non-skid base and lock-tight lid address common concerns for owners who need operation beyond a single daily meal.
The manufacturer calls its design “jam-free.” That wording is a company claim, not an independent test result, so inspect the actual kibble range and test repeated meals with your food. The product page’s live price is volatile and is not included here; calculate the total cost of the feeder, any replacement parts and any required connectivity before deciding.
Ferplast Risto Pet Smart: smaller hopper with explicit obstruction alerts
Ferplast’s 6-liter Risto Pet Smart schedules meals through an app or manual control and can run from mains or battery power. Its obstruction sensor and malfunction alarm are designed to report a failure when the auger cannot rotate. A locking lid, desiccant compartment and stainless-steel bowl support storage and cleaning.
The 12 mm maximum kibble diameter is a hard fit check, and the page says the feeder is not suitable for wet food. For a large dog, estimate refill frequency from the dog’s weighed ration rather than assuming 6 liters will last several days.

- Unplug the feeder before removing the tank, auger cover or bowl.
- Empty old kibble before adding fresh food; do not continuously top up food that has absorbed moisture or oils.
- Wash the bowl using the manufacturer’s material guidance. Hombli specifically identifies its steel bowl as dishwasher-safe; do not assume that applies to the tank or other models.
- Dry every component completely before reassembly. Moisture can make dry food swell and increase blockage risk.
- Inspect the dispensing throat, auger and lid seal for powder buildup, broken pieces and foreign objects.
- Replace or refresh desiccant as directed. Hombli and Ferplast list desiccant provisions, but replacement schedules and compatible packs are not stated in the supplied specifications.
- Run a test dispense after cleaning and confirm that the bowl is seated and the lid is locked.
Set up and test the feeder before depending on it
- Measure the food. Record the largest and smallest kibble dimensions and weigh a normal meal of the exact food.
- Check the documented range. Reject any model whose stated maximum is below your largest pieces, and obtain a current manual where no range is published.
- Program a conservative schedule. Match the dog’s veterinary or household feeding plan; do not use the feeder’s maximum meal count as a reason to increase food.
- Calibrate portions. Dispense several meals into a bowl and weigh them. Repeat after the hopper is partly empty because feed rate can vary with fill level and food shape.
- Test interruption modes. With the dog supervised, remove mains power, restore it, and separately interrupt the Wi-Fi connection. Verify what still dispenses and which alerts disappear.
- Observe the dog. Confirm that the dog can reach the bowl comfortably, cannot tip the unit or open the lid, and does not guard or gorge the food.
- Use a human backup. Arrange a person who can inspect the feeder and dog if you are away. No product page reviewed here establishes a safe duration for leaving a dog unattended.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
- Choosing by liters alone: calculate days from food mass and daily ration.
- Assuming “large-breed” food fits: measure the actual kibble and compare it with the documented diameter range.

They do not establish independent jam resistance, portion accuracy, long-term motor durability, digestive benefits or a safe period of unattended use. Manufacturer language such as “jam-free” should therefore be treated as a product claim to verify in your own setup, not as a tested outcome.
For a busy owner of a large or giant breed, the practical decision is usually between a genuinely high-capacity unit with manageable outage limitations and a smaller feeder whose alarms, food-size range or height suit your routine. Measure first, test with the real food, and keep human oversight in the plan.
