The best basking bulb is a bright-white halogen or incandescent flood bulb positioned over one end of the enclosure and chosen by measured results, not wattage alone. Start with the bulb and fixture ratings, create a natural-stone basking site, and use separate thermometers for the warm air, cool air and basking surface. A basking bulb supplies heat; it does not replace a dedicated UVB lamp.
What a bearded dragon basking bulb should do
A basking lamp creates a hot zone at one end of the vivarium. The opposite end must remain cooler so the dragon can move away from heat when it needs to. Heating the entire enclosure evenly removes that choice and makes a safe thermal gradient impossible.

Bright white incandescent and halogen lamps are the heat-source types supported by the care guidance reviewed for this article. ReptiFiles specifically recommends halogen or incandescent flood bulbs. A flood beam spreads heat across a usable basking area; a spot beam concentrates it into a smaller point. The right pattern depends on the size and shape of the perch and on the temperatures you actually measure.

Halogen flood or incandescent spot?
Halogen flood bulbs
Halogen floods are the preferred starting point when you want a broad, bright basking zone. ReptiFiles names Reptile Systems Eco Halogen, Arcadia GoldenSun Halogen Lamp and Vinaco PAR30 halogen bulbs as examples. The source does not rank these products or report controlled tests, so treat them as source-named options rather than proven winners.
A named, searchable example is a Vinaco PAR30 halogen flood bulb. Confirm the exact wattage, PAR30 fitting, fixture rating and current listing before buying. Marketplace price, stock and available variants were not established here, and no particular wattage is guaranteed to work in every enclosure.
Incandescent spot bulbs
Incandescent spots can work when the basking perch is compact and needs concentrated heat. ReptiFiles lists Exo Terra Intense Basking Spot and Repti Zoo Intense Basking Spot as examples. They are not independently tested or ranked against the halogen choices. A spot that creates an intense point can also overheat a small area, so surface-temperature measurement is essential.

How to choose between them
| Decision factor | Halogen flood | Incandescent spot |
|---|---|---|
| Beam pattern | Broad, useful for a larger basking platform | Narrower, concentrated on a smaller site |
| Examples named by ReptiFiles | Reptile Systems Eco Halogen; Arcadia GoldenSun Halogen Lamp; Vinaco PAR30 halogen | Exo Terra Intense Basking Spot; Repti Zoo Intense Basking Spot |
| How to decide | Use when the dragon needs a wider heated surface or the perch is broad | Use when a compact perch needs a focused hot spot |
| Evidence status | These are source-named options, not a controlled product ranking. Measure your own enclosure. | |
For a broad basking area, ReptiFiles notes that more than one bulb may be required. Adding a second lamp changes the heat pattern, so reassess both the basking surface and the cool end after installation rather than assuming two bulbs are automatically safer.
Wattage is a starting point, not a temperature setting
RSPCA guidance lists a 60–100 W lamp at one end of its stated setup. That range is a source-specific starting recommendation, not a universal prescription. Enclosure dimensions, mesh, room temperature, lamp height, bulb beam and basking material all affect the result. UC Davis likewise advises selecting wattage to provide the correct tank temperature, while ReptiFiles says wattage and placement must be adjusted to the enclosure and verified by measurement.

Buy the bulb only after checking that the socket and fixture are rated for its wattage and lamp type. Never exceed the fixture’s rating. If the first lamp does not create the required gradient, change one variable at a time—wattage, distance, beam pattern or perch position—and take new readings.
Temperature targets: identify what and where you measured
Care sheets use different terms for different measuring points. Do not combine them into one “ideal temperature.” Air temperature and the temperature of the surface touched by the dragon are separate values.

| Measurement | Published guidance | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Hot-end temperature | 38–42°C from the RSPCA care sheet | Use as the hot-end range for that guidance; identify the probe location. |
| Basking-site surface | 42–45°C in ReptiFiles’ guidance | Measure the actual stone or perch surface with an infrared thermometer or temperature gun. |
| Warmer-end enclosure air | 32–38°C from VCA Animal Hospitals (page copyright 2022) | Place a digital thermometer probe in the warmer air, not on the stone. |
| Cool-end air | 75–80°F from VCA Animal Hospitals (page copyright 2022) | Measure at the shaded end where the dragon can retreat. |
| Warmer-end air in VCA’s Fahrenheit guidance | 90–100°F from the same VCA page | This is an air-temperature recommendation and should not be treated as a surface target. |
RSPCA recommends digital thermometers at the cool end and in the basking zone, with an infrared thermometer available for checking temperatures. VCA similarly recommends thermometers at both ends and says an electronic temperature gun can provide readings. Record where each reading was taken so a surface value is never mistaken for an air value.
Step-by-step basking-bulb setup
- Map the gradient. Decide which end will be the basking end and leave the other end shaded and cooler. The lamp should heat one end, not the entire enclosure.
- Choose a stable basking surface. RSPCA specifies a natural stone basking surface in its setup guidance. Make sure the stone cannot tip, slide or trap the dragon.
- Check the fixture. Verify the socket, reflector and guard are rated for the selected bulb’s wattage and type. Follow the fixture and bulb manufacturer’s mounting instructions.
- Mount the heat source outside the enclosure. VCA states: “Heat sources should always be placed OUTSIDE the enclosure and above one end of it (the basking end) so there is no possibility of direct contact between the heating element and your bearded dragon, which might result in your pet burning itself on the bulb.” RSPCA also calls for a guard around heat lamps.
- Set the starting distance. RSPCA says the dragon’s back should remain at least 25–30 cm from the lamp in its described setup. Treat that distance as a safety starting point for that arrangement, then verify the actual temperatures; a different enclosure or fixture can produce a different result.
- Install the selected bulb. Use a bright-white halogen flood or incandescent bulb that fits the fixture. Do not assume the printed wattage predicts the final basking temperature.
- Add separate measuring tools. Put a digital thermometer at the cool end and another in the warmer air. Use an infrared thermometer or electronic temperature gun to check the basking surface itself.
- Measure before relying on the setup. Compare each reading with the appropriate target table above. If the surface, warm air or cool air is outside its range, adjust the setup and measure again.
- Observe access to both zones. The dragon must be able to leave the hot surface freely. Recheck after rearranging décor, changing a bulb or changing room conditions.
UVB is a separate lighting system
A basking bulb cannot be treated as the enclosure’s complete lighting system. UC Davis explicitly distinguishes heat bulbs from UVB: screw-in bulbs, including those sold as full spectrum, provide heat but not UVB. VCA explains that UVB enables vitamin D3 production and calcium absorption. Glass and plastic can filter UV light, so a UVB lamp must be positioned where the enclosure materials do not block the intended exposure.
RSPCA calls for a UVB fluorescent tube and describes a UVB gradient from UVI 3.0–5.0 in the basking zone to zero in shade. ReptiFiles names the Arcadia T5 HO Desert 12% UVB kit as a companion option and gives positioning guidance that varies with the type of mesh. Washington State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital guidance, dated March 2, 2026, also identifies white light, heat/infrared and UV-B as required and provides placement and replacement advice.

These recommendations are not interchangeable distance rules. Use the lamp maker’s current positioning chart for your exact tube, reflector and mesh, and ask a reptile veterinarian to review the enclosure if the recommended distances conflict. Replace the UVB source according to the manufacturer’s replacement schedule; visible light does not prove that useful UVB output remains.
Safety checks before the dragon uses the enclosure
- Keep every heat element outside the enclosure and above one end.
- Install a guard so the dragon cannot touch the bulb or hot fixture.
- Maintain the source-specific 25–30 cm back-to-lamp clearance when following the RSPCA arrangement, then confirm temperatures with your own measurements.
- Use a fixture rated for the bulb’s wattage and follow both the fixture and bulb instructions.
- Ensure the stone or platform is secure and has no sharp edges.
- Check that the dragon can move from the basking site to shade without crossing an obstacle or contacting the lamp.
- Do not put glass or plastic between the dragon and its UVB source when the lamp instructions require unobstructed UVB.
- Recheck temperatures after replacing a bulb, changing the perch, altering mesh or moving the enclosure.
Troubleshooting by measurement
| What you observe | Likely setup issue | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Basking surface is below the applicable target | The bulb is too weak for the enclosure, too far away, or its beam does not cover the perch. | Confirm the infrared reading, fixture rating and lamp position. Adjust one factor, then remeasure. |
| Basking surface is above the applicable target | The lamp is too close, too powerful or focused on too small an area. | Recheck the tool and measurement point, then alter distance, wattage or beam pattern within the fixture’s instructions. |
| Warm air is correct but the stone is not | Air and surface are being confused, or the perch material and beam pattern are unsuitable. | Take a surface reading directly on the basking site and an air reading beside the animal’s usual warm-zone position. |
| There is no cool end | The lamp is centered, the beam is too broad for the enclosure, or the enclosure is too small for the chosen arrangement. | Move heat to one end and preserve an unheated shaded area; verify both end readings. |
| The basking area is too small for the dragon | A narrow spot is concentrating heat on one point. | Consider a flood pattern or, for a genuinely broad platform, the additional bulb ReptiFiles says may sometimes be required. Measure the complete surface afterward. |
| The dragon can touch the lamp | The fixture is inside the enclosure or lacks a suitable guard. | Move the heat source outside and install a guard before use. |
| UVB exposure is uncertain | The heat bulb is being treated as UVB, or mesh, glass or plastic is blocking the UVB lamp. | Check the separate UVB tube’s model, reflector, mesh arrangement and manufacturer distance chart. |
How to compare bulbs without being misled by wattage
When comparing two products, use the same decision axes for both: bulb type, beam pattern, fitting, fixture compatibility, available wattages, lamp-to-basking distance, enclosure size, measured surface temperature, measured air temperatures and the manufacturer’s stated use. A 75 W bulb in one vivarium can produce a different result from a 75 W bulb in another because the reflector, beam, mesh and room temperature differ.
Keep UVB out of the heat-bulb comparison. A UVB tube is a separate product with a separate function, placement chart and replacement schedule. A bulb that creates the correct basking temperature still fails the UVB requirement if no dedicated UVB source is installed.
Buying checklist and setup cost
Before ordering, write down the enclosure’s length, width and height, the basking platform’s size, the distance from the planned fixture to the dragon’s back, and the room temperature. Those details make a product listing useful; a wattage by itself does not. Confirm the bulb’s base and shape match the reflector, that the fixture accepts the stated wattage, and that a guard can be fitted without reducing the safe clearance.
Budget for the complete system rather than the bulb alone: an external heat fixture, a guard, at least two digital thermometers, a way to read the basking surface, and a separate UVB tube and reflector. Prices, stock, exact wattage variants and affiliate availability change by seller, and no current marketplace price was verified for the named products. Compare the total equipment needed and the manufacturer’s warranty or instructions at the time you buy. A cheaper bulb is not a saving if it cannot be mounted safely or leaves the cool end outside its target.

Keep the receipt or product packaging until the setup is working. The model name, wattage, fitting and installation date are useful records when you replace a lamp or troubleshoot a changed reading. Do not substitute a household bulb with an unknown fixture rating simply because its label appears similar.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Room and enclosure variables that change the result
Two identical bulbs can perform differently in different rooms. A cooler room, a taller enclosure, a ventilated mesh top or a different reflector can lower the basking surface, while a low ceiling, dark décor or a closer perch can raise it. Measure after the enclosure has reached its normal operating conditions, not immediately after switching the lamp on.
Recheck readings after seasonal room-temperature changes, moving the enclosure, changing the mesh or replacing the basking stone. If you use two bulbs over a wide platform, measure several points across that platform as well as the cool end. The dragon should have a usable warm area and an obvious path to shade, not merely one very hot spot.
Maintenance and replacement routine
- Check the warm-air and cool-air thermometers and take a direct surface reading whenever the setup changes.
- Inspect the guard, socket, reflector and mounting before each bulb change.
- Replace a failed or visibly damaged heat bulb immediately with a correctly rated type; remeasure because a different bulb can change the gradient.
- Keep a note of the UVB lamp’s installation date and replace it on the manufacturer’s schedule rather than waiting for visible-light failure.
- Review the enclosure after seasonal room-temperature changes or a major décor change.
Practical buying decision
For most keepers starting from scratch, choose a bright-white halogen flood bulb that fits a properly rated external fixture, then size its wattage to the measured enclosure result. A compact perch may suit an incandescent spot, while a wide platform may need a flood or more than one lamp. In every case, the winning setup is the one that produces the required hot surface, warmer air and cool retreat without allowing contact burns.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which bulb should I use for basking?
Start by comparing a bright-white halogen flood with an incandescent spot that fits a properly rated external fixture. A flood generally suits a wider platform, while a spot suits a compact perch. Choose the bulb that produces the correct measured surface and air temperatures in your enclosure; no single wattage works everywhere.
What temperature should the enclosure be kept at?
Identify the measurement first. The RSPCA lists 38–42°C for its hot end, ReptiFiles gives 42–45°C for the basking-site surface, and VCA lists 32–38°C for warmer-end air, 90–100°F for that warmer air and 75–80°F for the cool end. These are different locations, so use separate readings rather than one blended target.
Do I need special lighting besides a basking bulb?
Yes. Ordinary screw-in heat bulbs, including products marketed as full spectrum, provide heat but not UVB. Use a dedicated UVB system, follow its lamp maker’s distance and mesh guidance, and provide a shaded area where UVB falls to zero.
Can I put the basking bulb inside the vivarium?
No. VCA says heat sources should be outside and above one end so the dragon cannot touch the heating element. Use a suitable guard and maintain the fixture’s required clearance; the RSPCA arrangement keeps the dragon’s back at least 25–30 cm from the lamp.
How do I know whether a 60–100 W bulb is right?
RSPCA gives 60–100 W as a starting range for its described setup, not a universal prescription. Check the fixture rating, install the bulb safely, and measure the warm air, cool air and basking surface. Adjust wattage, distance, beam pattern or perch position one variable at a time.
What should I compare when shopping?
Compare bulb type and beam pattern, fitting, fixture compatibility, available wattages, lamp-to-perch distance, enclosure size, manufacturer instructions and your measured temperatures. Compare the separate UVB tube on its own placement and replacement requirements. Current prices and stock vary by seller, so verify those details at purchase.
The Bottom Line
Choose a bright-white halogen flood or incandescent spot that fits a guarded external fixture, then verify the basking surface, warm air and cool air with separate tools. Keep a clear cool retreat and install a dedicated UVB system; measured results matter more than a universal wattage claim.
