For a posed dog, start in aperture priority; for a moving dog, choose a faster shutter speed and use continuous autofocus or tracking. As practical starting points, try 1/250–1/500 second for indoor movement and about 1/1,000 second for a running dog outdoors. The right settings depend on the dog’s speed, available light, and your camera and lens, so check focus and exposure as you shoot.

Quick starting settings for dog photos

Situation Starting point Adjust when
Still indoor portrait Aperture priority; start near the wider apertures your lens offers and focus on the near eye. Stop down if too little of the dog is sharp. Add light or raise ISO if the shutter speed becomes too slow. Nikon’s D5600 pet guide illustrates f/1.8 for a soft background and f/5.6 for keeping more of the photographer and pet in focus; these are examples, not universal settings. Nikon’s D5600 pet-photography guide.
Indoor movement or walking Shutter priority, or aperture priority with Auto ISO; begin around 1/250–1/500 second. Use a faster shutter for quicker movement. If the image is too dark, improve the light or raise ISO. Tamron gives 1/250–1/500 second for a relatively slow-moving pet indoors; Sony’s general pet guidance says 1/250 second or faster to reduce motion blur. Tamron’s pet-photography guide and Sony’s pet-photography guidance.
Running outdoors Continuous autofocus or tracking; begin around 1/1,000 second and try about 1/2,000 second for fast action. Increase shutter speed if motion blur remains; adjust aperture and ISO to maintain exposure. Fujifilm uses about 1/2,000 second in a dog-running example. Fujifilm’s dog subject-detection AF guidance.

These manufacturer examples are starting points, not results from a camera test. Camera labels and autofocus behavior differ by model; consult your camera manual for the equivalent settings.

What settings should I use for indoor dog photography?

For a calm or posed dog

Aperture priority is a useful way to control background blur while the camera chooses a shutter speed. A wider aperture, represented by a smaller f-number, lets in more light and can soften the background. It also makes the area in focus shallower, so focus carefully on the nearer eye. If the nose is sharp but the eyes or face are not, stop down to a larger f-number to increase depth of field.

Nikon’s D5600 guide uses f/1.8 as an example for a soft background and f/5.6 as an example when more of the photographer and pet should remain in focus. Those values illustrate the trade-off; the useful aperture depends on your lens, distance, and how much of the dog you want sharp. Nikon’s D5600 pet-photography guide.

For movement indoors

Use shutter priority if your camera offers it, or aperture priority with Auto ISO if you want the camera to raise ISO as needed to preserve exposure. Start around 1/250–1/500 second for a dog walking or moving relatively slowly. Tamron suggests that range for a relatively slow-moving pet indoors and around 1/1,000 second when the pet is moving around; Sony gives 1/250 second or faster as general guidance for reducing pet-motion blur. Nikon Professional Services recommends a 1/500-second minimum with Auto ISO for active dogs and cats in its guidance for the Z 7 and Z 6 setup. These are not interchangeable guarantees: use a faster speed if the dog’s movement still blurs. Tamron, Sony, and Nikon Professional Services.

When the room is dim

  • Move the dog near a window or use practical available light where possible.
  • Open the aperture if your lens allows it, while checking that enough of the dog remains in focus.
  • Raise ISO if needed to keep the shutter speed fast enough. Higher ISO can make image noise more visible.
  • Consider a fast lens compatible with your camera. Nikon’s D5600 guide discusses a 50mm fixed-focal-length lens and f/1.8 as an indoor example; a 50mm f/1.8 is not compatible with every camera and does not guarantee a sharp action photo. Nikon’s guide.

How do I take photos of dogs running outdoors?

Prioritize shutter speed over background blur: begin around 1/1,000 second and try about 1/2,000 second or faster if the dog’s movement remains blurred. Fujifilm uses about 1/2,000 second in its example of catching a moment while a dog runs. Fujifilm’s dog subject-detection AF guidance.

A fast shutter reduces the light reaching the sensor. To avoid an underexposed image, open the aperture, raise ISO, or photograph in brighter conditions. Use continuous autofocus or subject tracking to follow the dog; if your camera offers animal eye or subject detection, enable it and check whether it is holding focus on the dog.

Choose autofocus that can keep up

For a stationary portrait, single-shot autofocus may be adequate; for a dog that is walking, playing, or running, choose continuous autofocus or tracking. Camera makers use different names for these modes, so check your manual. Fujifilm describes continuous autofocus with animal subject detection, while Nikon Professional Services documents animal eye detection on the Z 7 and Z 6. Features and behavior vary by model and firmware. Fujifilm and Nikon Professional Services.

Detection is a helpful aid, not a guarantee. Nikon notes that face and eye detection can be less reliable when eyes are obscured, lighting is poor, colors blend, or movement is excessive. If focus misses, choose a focus point over the dog’s eye or face and try again, or change your position or lighting.

Set up an outdoor portrait

For a calm dog outdoors, aperture priority lets you choose how much of the background appears sharp. Use a wider aperture for a softer background, or stop down if you need more depth of field across the dog. Look for even, flattering light, and watch the shutter speed if the dog shifts or turns; switch to a faster shutter if movement starts to blur. If the session turns into running or play, use the action approach rather than prioritizing background blur.

What gear matters for dog photography?

When comparing a camera or lens, assess the features that affect the photograph you want:

  • Autofocus: animal eye detection and continuous tracking can help with moving subjects, but exact capabilities depend on camera model and firmware.
  • Maximum aperture: a wider maximum aperture can help in dim rooms and soften backgrounds, though shallow depth of field makes precise focus more important.
  • Focal length and working distance: consider how close you can comfortably get to the dog and the framing you want.
  • Higher-ISO image quality: useful when indoor light is limited and you need a faster shutter; raising ISO can increase visible noise.

A compatible 50mm f/1.8 prime is one possible indoor option, not a requirement. Nikon’s D5600 guide uses a 50mm fixed-focal-length lens in its pet-photography examples; check mount and camera compatibility before choosing any lens. Nikon’s D5600 guide.
