Hiding after adoption is a common response to an unfamiliar home, but a cat that is not eating needs attention rather than a wait-and-see approach. Set up a quiet, secure room and let your cat settle at its own pace; contact a veterinarian promptly if eating, drinking, or toileting worries you. A cat that has not eaten properly for 24 hours needs immediate veterinary attention, and kittens or cats who seem unwell may need help sooner.

Set up a quiet, secure room

Unfamiliar surroundings can make a newly adopted cat feel unsure. Start with one calm room where the cat can retreat without being disturbed. Keep food, water, and a litter tray accessible, along with familiar items if you have them. A covered bed or cardboard hideaway can offer a safe place to hide; it is optional and does not treat appetite loss.

Choose a hiding spot where the cat cannot become trapped, and keep the carrier available with its door open. Let the cat decide when to come out, approach people, and explore. Do not pull it from hiding or coax it into contact. Some cats feel safer exploring at night, so leave essentials accessible overnight. VCA’s transition advice is written for moving homes, but its secure-room setup is also a practical way to ease a cat into a new environment. VCA’s guide to bringing home a new cat recommends familiar items and a predictable environment.

Help a shy cat reach its food

If your cat is hiding and seems reluctant to approach the bowl, move the food closer to its hiding place, then leave the room. This suggestion comes from Cats Protection’s new-home advice. Keep water and the litter tray easy to reach as well.

Check whether food has been eaten without hovering over the cat. Note what food you offered and when you last saw the cat eat. Hiding or eating only overnight can occur during settling in, but neither explains why a particular cat is not eating. A move may affect appetite; illness and other medical problems can also cause appetite loss. Cornell Feline Health Center’s guidance on feline appetite loss describes both medical and psychological causes.

Know when to call a veterinarian

Do not wait for a cat to reach a time limit if it is a young kitten, seems ill, is getting worse, or has other concerning signs. Cornell says food avoidance for 12 hours can pose a lethal threat to a kitten younger than six weeks. For mature cats, Cornell warns that appetite loss may have a severe health impact if it persists for as little as 24 hours. VCA advises immediate veterinary attention if a cat has not eaten properly for 24 hours. That threshold is not a guaranteed safe period to wait.

VCA’s guidance on recognizing illness in cats identifies breathing problems and straining in the litter box as urgent concerns. For an individual cat, the cause and appropriate care cannot be determined from hiding or appetite change alone.

What to tell the veterinarian

When you call, share the adoption date, when your cat last ate, whether it is drinking and using the litter box, what food you offered, and any other changes you have noticed. This gives the veterinarian useful context for deciding how urgently the cat needs to be seen.
