Best Cat Beds for Cats Who Sleep on Their Owner’s Clothes

Clothing combines familiar scent, warmth, softness, and location. This guide explains how to choose and introduce a washable cat bed that matches those preferences, with evidence-based limits and troubleshooting steps.

Start with a soft, washable bed in a quiet place your cat already considers safe. Put a recently worn clothing item or familiar blanket on top, leave the bed in one consistent location, and reward voluntary use with a treat or calm praise. This is a sensible home trial, not a guaranteed way to replace your clothes as a sleeping spot.

Clothing can be appealing for several reasons at once: it may be warm, soft, and scented with a familiar person. A bed has to compete with that whole combination, not just provide a different cushion. Cats also vary widely in whether they prefer open mats, bolstered edges, enclosed spaces, elevated perches, or a particular room. No published source cited here compares commercial bed designs for cats who sleep on clothing, so the useful question is which features match your individual cat.

Why your cat may choose clothes over a cat bed

A cat sleeping on a shirt, sweater, or pile of laundry is not necessarily showing one specific emotional state. Several ordinary features of clothing can overlap:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Familiar smell: Your clothes carry a scent your cat recognizes. Cats use smell when evaluating places and objects, and familiar odors can make a resting area feel more predictable.
  • Warmth: Fabric left in a basket, on a bed, or against your body can hold heat.
  • Softness and texture: Knitwear, fleece, cotton, and worn fabrics may feel comfortable under a cat’s paws and body.
  • Location: Clothes often end up in rooms where people spend time, on elevated furniture, or in spots with a good view. The place itself may be more attractive than the garment.
  • Scent marking: Clothing may also become part of a familiar scent environment. This is one possible factor, not a diagnosis of why every cat chooses it.

Purina’s behavior guidance lists familiar human scent, warmth, softness, and possible scent marking among reasons cats may sleep on clothing or on their people. It also recommends a comfortable bed, a quiet and safe location, familiar blankets or toys, consistent placement, and rewards for bed use (Purina, updated February 9, 2026). Those are general behavior suggestions rather than proof that a certain shape or material will work best.

Refusing a new bed is therefore not misbehavior. Your cat may simply prefer the old location, the smell of the garment, the texture, or a different level of shelter. Treat the first bed as an experiment in matching those preferences.

What the evidence does—and does not—say about owner scent

Familiar scent is a reasonable feature to test, but it should not be treated as a proven switch that makes cats abandon clothing. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s review of a preliminary study by Behnke, Vitale, and Udell compared a cat’s owner being present with a human-scented item during short periods in an unfamiliar laboratory setting. The sample contained 42 cats with an average age of six years. In that brief, stressful situation, the cats appeared more comforted by the owner’s presence and did not appear to receive much reassurance from the scent item alone (AVSAB, January 20, 2022).

The study had important limits: an unfamiliar researcher introduced and removed the item, exposure was short, and the setting was not a normal home. It did not test a cat bed, a worn shirt placed on a bed, or a cat’s choice between clothing and bedding. Its result cannot establish whether your own cat will choose a bed with your scent.

Home guidance is more specific about the environment than about scent alone. The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) states that soft bedding, along with familiar smells and sounds, provides security for your cat. That is advice to create a secure resting area, not a promise that familiar-smelling bedding will change a particular cat’s preference (AAFP, client education page). AAFP and International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) environmental guidance likewise emphasizes safe resting places, familiar scent, and individual environmental needs (AAFP and ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines).

Features to compare when choosing a bed

Use the following criteria to compare beds in a pet store or online. They are practical decision axes drawn from feline environmental guidance, not a laboratory ranking.

Softness and support

Choose cushioning that compresses comfortably without leaving your cat on a hard floor. A very thin mat may suit a cat that likes a firm surface; a thicker cushion may appeal to a cat that kneads, curls, or spends long periods asleep. Check that seams, zippers, and filling are enclosed so they cannot be pulled out during kneading or grooming.

Open versus sheltered design

An open mat or low-sided cushion lets a cat stretch and watch the room. A bolster gives a rim to lean against while preserving visibility. A cave, hood, or high-sided nest offers more cover for a cat that settles best when partly hidden. There is no universally superior style. Let your cat’s existing choices guide you: sleeping in the middle of a sofa suggests a different starting point from sleeping under a chair or inside a closet.

Placement flexibility

A bed is useful only where your cat is willing to rest. Favor a design that fits the preferred room, shelf, window area, or piece of furniture without blocking a walkway or access to food, water, litter boxes, or escape routes. If your cat sleeps on clothes on the floor, a low bed may be easier to accept than a raised perch. If clothing is always on a chair, a compact cushion that can occupy that same safe surface may be a better trial.

Washability and scent retention

Look for a removable, machine-washable cover and a cushion that can be cleaned according to its care label. Washable fabric lets you remove hair and accidents without discarding the entire bed. During the introduction period, avoid washing the familiar blanket or clothing item unnecessarily; its recognizable smell is part of the test. Do not use strong fragrances or scented laundry products on the bed, because unfamiliar or intense smells may be unwelcome to cats.

Stability and construction

The bed should stay flat and stable when your cat steps into it. A sliding bed can make an otherwise comfortable surface feel unsafe. Check the base on smooth floors and secure it on furniture so it cannot fall. Inspect regularly for loose threads, exposed foam, or damaged fasteners and remove the bed from use if your cat can ingest pieces.

Height and view

Some cats prefer an elevated resting spot, while others choose ground-level bedding. AAFP environmental guidance recognizes individual preferences, so elevation is a feature to test rather than a universal advantage. If you try a raised bed, ensure the route up and down is secure and that the location does not create a fall hazard.

Bed styles and the cats they may suit

The table is a comparison framework, not a tested winner list. Observe which option resembles the places your cat already selects.

Style Possible match Advantages Trade-offs to check
Flat padded mat Cats that stretch out or sleep on open clothing piles Easy to place beside a sofa, on the floor, or on furniture; usually simple to wash Provides little edge or cover; may slide on smooth surfaces
Bolster or donut bed Cats that curl against a rolled blanket or sofa edge Raised rim supports leaning and nesting while keeping the cat visible Some cats dislike climbing over the rim; inner cushion and seams need regular inspection
Enclosed cave or hooded bed Cats that choose boxes, closets, or spaces under furniture Offers shelter and a defined boundary Can be too warm, cramped, or difficult to clean; place it where the entrance remains unobstructed
Window or furniture perch Cats that sleep on chair backs, shelves, or other elevated spots Provides height and a view Must be firmly secured and reachable without a risky jump; not suitable if your cat prefers floor-level sites
Large washable blanket or pad Cats that choose loose laundry, quilts, or broad fabric surfaces Closest texture and size match to a clothing pile; easy to move during a trial Can bunch up or slide; requires a stable base and frequent laundering

If you are uncertain, start with the simplest washable mat or pad that can occupy the clothing spot. Add a bolster or enclosure only when your cat’s existing behavior suggests a need for an edge or shelter.

How to introduce a bed without making it less appealing

  1. Map the current sleeping choice. Note the exact clothing material, room, height, temperature, light level, and time of day. The goal is to copy the attractive conditions, not merely remove the laundry.
  2. Choose a safe, quiet location. Place the bed where your cat can rest without being trapped, startled, or blocked from leaving. A calm corner near a favored spot is usually a better first test than an isolated room your cat never visits.
  3. Match the surface. Put a familiar blanket or a recently worn, clean clothing item on the bed. Secure it so it does not slide or cover the entrance of an enclosed bed. Use one familiar item rather than layering many new fabrics with competing smells.
  4. Keep the position consistent. Leave the bed in the same place for the trial. Moving it after every refusal prevents you from knowing whether the bed or the location was the problem.
  5. Let your cat investigate voluntarily. Do not place the cat in the bed, hold it there, or close an entrance. Allow sniffing, stepping in, leaving, and returning on the cat’s schedule.
  6. Reward calm interaction. When your cat approaches, steps onto, or rests in the bed, offer a small treat or quiet praise if your cat enjoys it. Deliver the reward near the bed so the cat can leave freely.
  7. Record what happens. For several days, note whether the cat uses the bed, how long it stays, and whether use occurs only at certain times. Also note whether the cat chooses the familiar item but not the bed, which suggests the scent or fabric may be attractive while the shape or location is not.
  8. Change one variable at a time. If there is no use, first adjust location, then surface texture, then bed style. Changing all three at once makes the result impossible to interpret.

These steps adapt the general recommendations to a clothing preference: comfortable bedding, a safe and quiet place, familiar blankets or toys, stable placement, and rewards for voluntary use (Purina).

How to keep a familiar-scent setup clean

Cleanliness and familiarity are not opposites. Use a removable cover so the main bed can be washed while a small, washable familiar item remains on top during the introduction. Follow the manufacturer’s washing instructions and allow all parts to dry completely before returning them. If the item becomes soiled, wash it; do not preserve a smell at the expense of hygiene.

Avoid adding perfume, fabric softener, essential oils, or strongly scented cleaners to the bed. Cats evaluate their surroundings through smell, and AAFP/ISFM guidance notes that unfamiliar or strong odors can be unwelcome (AAFP and ISFM). A neutral, clean bed with one familiar item is a clearer and safer test than a bed saturated with several new scents.

Troubleshooting when your cat still chooses clothes

The cat sniffs the bed and walks away

Check for a strong manufacturing, detergent, or storage odor. Air the bed in a clean, well-ventilated area, then reintroduce it with the familiar item. Also check whether the bed is unstable, too enclosed, too hot, or placed where people or other animals pass close by. Make one change and observe rather than repeatedly presenting the bed in different locations.

The cat uses the familiar shirt but not the bed

This pattern suggests that the clothing’s scent or texture may be attractive, while the bed’s shape, firmness, or position is not. Try laying the shirt flat on a simpler mat in the exact place where the clothing was chosen. If that works, add structure gradually by testing a low bolster or moving the mat a few inches at a time.

The cat uses the bed only when the clothing is on it

That is still useful information. Keep the familiar item on the washable cover and launder it on a practical schedule. You do not need to eliminate the clothing immediately; the goal is to provide a safe alternative that your cat voluntarily uses. Over time, you can test whether a smaller blanket retains acceptance, but there is no requirement to remove the scent item if the arrangement is safe.

The cat uses the bed briefly, then returns to laundry

Compare the two spots at the time the cat sleeps. Clothing may be warmer, softer, higher, or closer to you. Move the bed to the same surface or add a thicker washable layer, then observe again. If the cat always chooses a particular person’s clothing because it is occupied or warm, the bed may need to be placed beside that person rather than across the room.

The cat ignores every bed

Stop adding beds and study the chosen resting sites. A cat may prefer a particular temperature, view, height, or level of cover that the current options do not provide. Offer one inexpensive, washable surface in the favored spot and leave it available without pressure. Some cats maintain several sleeping locations instead of adopting one designated bed.

Several cats compete for one bed

Provide more than one resting option in separate safe locations. Individual cats may need different levels of cover, height, or distance from people and other animals. A bed that is comfortable in isolation can become undesirable if another cat blocks the entrance or controls the surrounding space.

When a change in sleeping behavior needs veterinary advice

A preference for clothes by itself does not identify illness or anxiety. However, contact your veterinarian if a sudden change in sleeping location occurs together with other changes such as reduced appetite, altered litter-box use, hiding, vocalization, mobility difficulty, grooming changes, or unusual irritability. The AAFP’s client guidance recommends tracking behavior changes and discussing concerning patterns with a veterinarian (AAFP).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not force a cat into a bed while waiting for an appointment. Keep familiar, safe resting places available and record when the change began, where the cat now sleeps, and any accompanying signs. That information can help a veterinarian assess the pattern.

A practical buying checklist

  • Is the bed soft enough for the cat’s preferred sleeping posture?
  • Does its shape match an open, rimmed, enclosed, floor-level, or elevated location your cat already chooses?
  • Can you place it in the exact room or on the exact furniture where clothing is attractive?
  • Does it have a removable, washable cover and securely enclosed filling?
  • Will it remain stable and leave a clear exit?
  • Can a familiar blanket or clothing item lie on it without sliding or blocking an entrance?
  • Are the materials free of strong added fragrance?
  • Can you inspect and clean it regularly without removing all familiar scent at once?
  • Are you prepared to test one change at a time instead of expecting immediate replacement of clothing?

What success should look like

Success is not necessarily that your cat never sleeps on your clothes again. A realistic outcome is an additional secure resting option that the cat chooses sometimes, especially when the bed is in a preferred location and carries a familiar, clean item. Some cats will alternate between the bed and clothing; others will reject the bed despite careful matching. Because no cited study compares bed designs for this behavior, your cat’s voluntary, repeated use is the meaningful measure—not a marketing claim or a single trial.
