Pig Water Troughs vs. Automatic Waterers: Which Is Better?

Automatic waterers reduce filling work, while troughs can suit small or outdoor groups. Compare flow, access, hygiene, capacity and freezing risks before choosing.

Neither option is automatically better. Automatic nipple or bowl waterers are usually the stronger choice when you have dependable plumbing, correctly adjusted flow, enough drinking points and time for daily inspections. A trough can be the more practical choice for a small, outdoor or mobile group when you can refill, secure and clean it frequently. In every setup, the deciding standard is the same: every pig must be able to reach sufficient, clean, liquid water whenever it needs it.

Your best system depends on pig age and size, herd numbers, housing, climate, water pressure, electricity, plumbing and how reliably you can check the equipment. Use the comparison and sizing figures below to choose a system that works under your actual conditions, not just on installation day.

The essential requirement: continuous access to fresh water

Water access comes before the trough-versus-drinker decision. England’s Code of practice for the welfare of pigs states: “All pigs over two weeks of age must have continuous access to a sufficient quantity of fresh drinking water.” The code identifies this as paragraph 14 of Schedule 8 to the Welfare of Farmed Animals (England) Regulations 2007.

That is an England-specific legal requirement; other countries and regions may use different rules. Wherever you keep pigs, the practical test is broader than whether a container or pipe is present. You must provide enough total water, enough flow, access for every pig, a safe source, hygienic equipment and checks that catch failures. Demand rises in hot weather and when pigs are ill, so a system that barely meets normal conditions is not a reliable system.

  • Inspect the actual drinking point, not just the tank level or a connected hose.
  • Make sure timid or smaller pigs can drink without being blocked by dominant animals.
  • Keep water separate from a wallow. A wallow is for cooling and is not a substitute for clean drinking water.
  • Have a response for frozen lines, frozen vessels, blocked valves, empty reservoirs and power or pump failures.

How the two systems deliver water

Automatic nipple or bowl waterers

An automatic system connects a water line, reservoir or pressurised supply to a drinker. When a pig pushes a nipple, water flows; a bowl or cup catches water in a small reservoir. The attraction is reduced manual filling and a potentially continuous supply. The benefit exists only when the line, valve, pressure, height and number of drinking points are right.

Flow is a management setting, not a fixed feature. A flow that is too low can discourage intake or leave pigs waiting. Excessive flow can splash, increase waste and wet the pen. Nipple height must match the pigs using it and be raised as they grow. In a group, one well-positioned drinker can still be inadequate if larger pigs monopolise it.

Newly weaned pigs that have only used a trough may not immediately understand a nipple. During the changeover, provide a familiar alternative or actively verify that each pig is drinking until it learns the new device.

Open drinking troughs

A trough stores a shared volume that pigs can access at the same time. It can be straightforward for a smallholding, outdoor pen or temporary setup because it does not require every pig to operate a valve. The trade-off is hands-on work: you must supply enough capacity, refill it before it is empty, prevent tipping or damage, and clean it often enough to protect water quality.

Place a trough where pigs cannot easily drag it, overturn it or pack mud into it. Provide sufficient accessible edge for the group rather than assuming that a large-looking container automatically prevents competition. An open trough used for drinking should not be treated as the same thing as a wallow used for cooling.

At-a-glance comparison

Decision axis Automatic nipple or bowl system Open trough
Water availability Can provide water on demand when supply, flow, drinker function and access points are adequate; requires checks. Holds a shared reserve, but capacity and refill frequency must match the group’s demand.
Cleaning and contamination Nipples can provide a fresh supply while functioning; cups can collect feed, urine and faeces. Requires regular cleaning. Ontario guidance describes trough systems as workable but more labour-intensive to clean.
Water wastage Nipples may spill water into the manure pit, especially when poorly adjusted. Cups retain some spilled water but need cleaning. Spills are visible; vessel stability, shape and placement affect losses.
Access and competition Height, flow and the number and placement of drinkers determine access; dominant pigs can obstruct a point. Provide enough usable perimeter and positioning so pigs can drink without obstruction.
Labour and infrastructure Less manual refilling in a functioning system, but needs plumbing, valves and maintenance. May be simpler for small or mobile groups, with more filling and cleaning.
Cold weather Lines, valves and nipples can freeze; winterisation and a backup supply are needed. Water can freeze in the vessel; liquid water must be restored and maintained.
Small or outdoor herds Useful where reliable plumbing is available and pigs can operate the drinker. Often practical when the trough is sufficiently large, secured, clean and checked.

This is a management comparison, not a controlled product trial. Actual performance depends on installation, weather, pig behaviour and inspection.

How much water do pigs need?

The following figures are guides in England’s pig welfare code, published by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. They are not universal prescriptions and do not replace local requirements or veterinary advice. The current GOV.UK page does not display a publication year for this table.

Pig category Guide to daily water intake Minimum nipple flow
Newly weaned pigs 1.0–1.5 litres per pig per day 0.3 litres per minute
Pigs up to 20 kg 1.5–2.0 litres per pig per day 0.5–1.0 litres per minute
Finishing pigs up to 100 kg 5.0–6.0 litres per pig per day 1.0–1.5 litres per minute
Lactating sows 15–30 litres per pig per day 2.0 litres per minute

These are daily amounts, not the volume that can be offered once and ignored. A group of ten finishing pigs, for example, has a guide demand of about 50–60 litres per day before extra allowance for heat, illness, spillage or unusual conditions. A trough therefore needs enough usable reserve between checks, while an automatic system needs enough supply and recovery rate to meet peaks in demand.

The code also gives a guide to drinking-point numbers: one nipple point per ten weaners or ration-fed pigs; one per 15 pigs on unrestricted feeding when flow is sufficient; or one reservoir bowl for up to 30 pigs. Apply the figure to the relevant pig class and local rules, and reduce the group sharing a point if competition or slow flow is observed.

When an automatic waterer is the better choice

Choose an automatic system when reduced manual filling is valuable and you can support the infrastructure. It is particularly useful for a fixed pen with a dependable water source, a line that can be protected from damage and someone who will inspect every drinker daily.

  • You want water available between routine visits rather than relying on a single refill.
  • The pen layout allows drinkers to be placed where all pigs can approach them.
  • You can measure and adjust flow as pigs move through age and weight classes.
  • You can keep spare fittings or provide a backup method during a blockage, freeze or pump failure.

Do not choose it solely because it is called “automatic.” A blocked nipple gives no water even when the tank is full, and a line with inadequate pressure can leave a group under-supplied. The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources swine guidance stresses adjustment and observation rather than assuming that installation ends the job.

When a trough is the better choice

A trough can be the sensible option for a few pigs, a changing group, an outdoor paddock or a location where running a protected water line is impractical. It also avoids the learning period that some newly weaned pigs face with nipple drinkers.

  • You can visit often enough to refill before the trough is empty.
  • The vessel can be anchored or positioned so pigs cannot tip or move it.
  • You have a practical cleaning routine and a way to remove mud, feed and manure.
  • You can protect the water from freezing or provide another reliable liquid-water source.

A trough is not a low-maintenance option. More visible water does not guarantee clean water, and a large container can still become contaminated or inaccessible if it is fouled, frozen or surrounded by mud.

Setting up an automatic drinker: a verification sequence

  1. Classify the pigs. Record age, approximate weight, feeding system and whether any animals are newly weaned or ill. Use the relevant daily-intake and flow guide rather than one setting for every pen.
  2. Provide enough drinking points. Use the code’s point-per-pig guidance as a starting point, then account for group size, layout and observed competition. A second point may solve a behavioural bottleneck even when the nominal ratio appears adequate.
  3. Set the height for the smallest pigs using it. The drinker must be reachable without forcing a pig to kneel awkwardly or stretch. Recheck and raise it as the pigs grow.
  4. Measure the flow at the drinker. Do not infer flow from pipe size or pressure. Collect the output for a timed interval and compare it with the applicable guide. Investigate a low result for blocked nipples, closed valves, kinks, low pressure or a failing pump.
  5. Watch pigs drink. Confirm that each class of pig can activate the device and that smaller or timid animals are not displaced. During weaning, retain an alternative water source until use is established.
  6. Check the discharge area. Excessive splashing wastes water and can create wet flooring. Nipple systems may send spilled water to the manure pit; adjust the setup where possible.
  7. Protect the line. Insulate or otherwise winterise exposed sections, protect fittings from pigs and plan how to drain or repair the line.
  8. Inspect every day. Test that water actually flows from each point, look for leaks and contamination, and record faults and repairs. A full reservoir or apparently connected pipe is not proof that pigs can drink.

Setting up a trough: a practical checklist

  1. Estimate demand between visits. Multiply the applicable daily guide by the number of pigs, then add a margin for heat, illness and spillage. Decide how often you can realistically refill and clean.
  2. Select a stable vessel. Use a design and placement that resist tipping, dragging and damage. Keep the drinking edge accessible to the smallest pig in the group.
  3. Choose a clean location. Avoid areas where manure, bedding, mud or feed can fall directly into the water. Do not place the trough where pigs must stand in a wallow to reach it.
  4. Fill before the reserve is exhausted. A trough that is empty during a hot afternoon fails the continuous-access test even if it was full that morning.
  5. Clean on an observed-need schedule. Remove solids and slime, empty stale water and scrub the vessel often enough that water remains acceptable. Increase attention when feed, mud or manure enters the trough.
  6. Check security after every pen change. Growing pigs can move equipment that was secure for a smaller group. Reposition or anchor it when damage or tipping becomes possible.
  7. Plan for freezing. Have a method to restore liquid water and a backup container or source if the normal trough is frozen.

Ontario’s guidance on providing feed and water to pigs supports the basic distinction: trough systems can work, but they demand more cleaning labour than a well-functioning automatic supply.

Cleaning, contamination and water waste

Open water shows contamination quickly, but automatic equipment does not eliminate it. Cups can collect feed, urine and faeces, and a dirty cup can discourage drinking or deliver contaminated water. Nipples reduce the open surface while they work, yet they can waste water when pigs play with them, when the height is wrong or when flow is excessive. Kansas State University explains these trade-offs in its Factors affecting water usage guidance: nipple spillage may enter the manure pit, while cups retain spilled water but can collect debris.

Measure waste by looking at the pen as well as the drinker. Unexpectedly wet flooring, a rapidly filling manure pit or a trough that empties much faster than calculated demand can indicate poor adjustment, leakage or play. Conversely, a dry drinker does not prove that water is adequate; it may indicate that the valve is blocked.

Cold weather and system failure

Freezing can stop either design. In an automatic system, a frozen line or valve can interrupt every drinker downstream. In a trough, ice can cover the accessible surface or make the entire reserve unusable. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s backyard pig guidance and the University of Florida IFAS swine-facilities guidance both support planning for weather rather than assuming that a connected supply will remain usable.

  • Inspect at the drinking point during the coldest part of the day, not only at the source.
  • Keep a safe backup container or supply ready while a frozen line or vessel is repaired.
  • Where a heater or de-icer is used, ensure it is suitable for livestock housing and installed to avoid chewing, burns and electrical hazards.
  • After thawing, check for split pipes, leaking fittings and damaged valves.

Do not count snow or ice as dependable drinking water. The keeper’s responsibility is to maintain access to liquid water and verify that pigs can use it.

Troubleshooting: symptoms and likely checks

What you observe Checks to make
Pigs crowd one drinker or smaller pigs hang back Check the number and location of points, height, flow and whether dominant pigs can block the approach. Add or reposition a point if needed.
A nipple produces little or no water Test the point directly; inspect for a blocked valve, kinked line, closed isolation valve, low pressure or a frozen section.
Floor or manure area is unusually wet Look for leaks, excessive flow, poor height adjustment or pigs playing with the nipple. Cups may also overflow or retain contaminated water.
A trough empties unexpectedly fast Check for leaks, tipping, spillage, animal access to the edge and whether heat or illness has increased demand. Recalculate the reserve needed between visits.
Water looks dirty or smells abnormal Empty and clean the vessel or cup, inspect the source and prevent feed, mud, urine and faeces from entering. Do not rely on dilution by topping up.
Newly weaned pigs do not appear to drink Observe them at the drinker and provide a familiar alternative while they learn a nipple. Verify actual intake rather than assuming the device is understood.
Water is present at the source but pigs cannot drink Trace the system to the final point. A full tank, connected hose or unfrozen reservoir does not establish that each valve flows.

Choosing by herd and housing situation

Small backyard group

A secured trough is often simplest if you are home or nearby to refill and clean it, especially when pigs are moved between pens. An automatic drinker becomes attractive when daily carrying is difficult and you can install a protected line. In either case, size the supply to the pigs’ stage rather than to the container’s advertised capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Newly weaned pigs

Use the lower intake and flow guide for newly weaned pigs, but focus on behaviour as well as numbers. Keep an alternative source during training and watch every pig use the drinker. A nominally correct nipple can still fail if the pig cannot activate it or is displaced.

Growing and finishing pigs

As intake rises toward the 5.0–6.0 litres-per-day guide for finishing pigs up to 100 kg, a small trough may require several fills, while an undersized automatic line may have inadequate recovery. Recheck height and flow as the group grows.

Lactating sows

Lactating sows have the highest guide in the table, 15–30 litres per day, with a 2.0-litres-per-minute minimum nipple-flow guide. Treat them as a separate design case rather than applying a finishing-pig setting.

Outdoor or mobile pens

A trough can avoid exposed plumbing, but it must be secured against movement and protected from mud and freezing. Automatic equipment is viable only if the line and fittings can survive weather, pig contact and relocation without leaving the group without water.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A maintenance routine that works for either system

  • Every day: observe pigs drinking, test each automatic point or inspect the full trough, check cleanliness, confirm liquid water and look for leaks or damage.
  • At growth or group changes: reset drinker height, reassess flow, review the number of points and make sure smaller pigs still have access.
  • During heat or illness: increase observation and available capacity because demand can rise.
  • Before cold weather: test the backup plan, protect exposed lines, inspect electrical equipment if used and identify a way to break or remove ice safely.
  • After a failure: provide an immediate alternative supply, repair the cause and verify every point before removing the backup.

Bottom-line decision

Choose an automatic nipple or bowl system when you can provide reliable plumbing, correct flow, suitable height, enough drinking points and daily functional checks. Choose a trough when a small or outdoor group benefits from simple shared access and you can commit to frequent filling, cleaning, secure placement and freeze planning. If either system leaves pigs competing, drinking dirty water or waiting for a frozen or blocked supply, it is the wrong system until those failures are corrected.
