The best cat charity is the one whose mission matches the result you want: trap-neuter-return (TNR) for community cats, rescue and adoption, sanctuary care for cats with special needs, senior-cat fostering, feline-health research, or broad animal protection. The 13 organizations below are useful starting points, not a verified ranking. Catster’s list was updated September 15, 2026, and its descriptions and ratings were not independently checked against every organization’s current materials. Before donating, volunteering, or buying goods, confirm the charity’s present mission, programs, geographic reach, and official giving instructions.
You can help with a one-time or recurring gift, a legacy donation, an approved wish-list item, volunteering, fundraising, or sharing accurate information. Choose the cause first, then decide whether money, time, supplies, or advocacy will be most useful.

How to choose a cat charity
Start with the outcome you care about rather than a percentage score. A TNR organization is a different choice from a sanctuary for blind cats, and a feline-health foundation uses donations differently from an adoption network. Ask four questions:
Recommended Free Tools
- What problem do you want to address? Community-cat population management, shelter rescue, adoption, special-needs care, senior cats, veterinary education, medical research, or broad animal protection all require different programs.
- Where does the organization work? A local group may offer hands-on volunteering near you, while an international or national organization may direct funds to research, policy, grants, or large-scale response.
- What programs are active now? Read the organization’s current mission statement, program pages, annual report, and donation page instead of relying only on a listicle description.
- How do you want to help? Charities may accept recurring gifts, legacy gifts, goods, volunteer time, peer-to-peer fundraising, or public education. The available options differ by organization.

1. Alley Cat Allies
Alley Cat Allies focuses on advocacy for homeless cats and education about trap-neuter-return. TNR combines humane trapping, sterilization, vaccination where available, and return to an outdoor colony with monitoring. This is a strong fit if you want to reduce future litters while keeping community cats in place rather than directing every cat into a shelter.
Choose this organization when public education, policy work, or support for community-cat caregivers matters to you. Before giving, confirm which current campaigns accept donations and whether volunteer opportunities are available in your area.
2. Alley Cat Rescue
Alley Cat Rescue works with community cats, TNR, and finding homes for cats that are suitable for adoption. It can suit a donor who wants both outdoor-cat population management and pathways into homes for friendly, abandoned, or vulnerable cats.

3. American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)
The ASPCA is a broad animal-protection organization, not a cat-only charity. Its work includes cruelty prevention, shelter and rescue support, disaster response, adoption and placement assistance, grants, and animal-care resources. It is appropriate if you want cats included in a wider animal-welfare mission or prefer a large organization with multiple response programs.
The ASPCA’s 2025 annual report says it helped more than 70,000 animals find homes through adoption, relocation, and placement support; assisted more than 20,000 animals affected by disasters, emergencies, and suspected cruelty; supported close to 1,000 shelters and rescue organizations with more than $23 million in grants; and helped provide more than 2 million meals. Those figures cover all animals, not cats alone, and apply to 2025.
4. Best Friends Animal Society
Best Friends Animal Society combines shelter-outcome work with spay/neuter clinics, education, and adoption. It is a useful match for people who want to improve the flow of cats through shelters while also supporting prevention and public participation.

Review the current mix of national initiatives and local opportunities before choosing a gift designation. Adoption, transport, fostering, clinic assistance, and fundraising may be available in different places and at different times.
5. Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary
Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary provides sanctuary care for blind cats and for cats described by Catster as living with feline immunodeficiency virus or feline leukemia. This is the clearest fit in the list if you specifically want to support lifetime care for cats who may be harder to place in ordinary adoption settings.
Sanctuary gifts can help with daily housing, food, enrichment, and veterinary needs. Confirm the organization’s current resident-care model, wish list, and accepted payment methods before sending supplies or designating a gift.
6. EveryCat Health Foundation
EveryCat Health Foundation awards grants for feline medical research. Your donation supports studies intended to improve understanding, diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of cat diseases rather than funding a shelter’s daily intake.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Read the foundation’s current grant priorities and reporting information so you know whether your preferred area of study is included.
7. The Humane Society of the United States
The Humane Society of the United States works across animal-protection issues, including rescue and advocacy. It is broader than a cat charity, so it may be right for someone who wants cats addressed as part of a wider effort against neglect, cruelty, and harmful practices.
Because broad organizations can run many campaigns at once, inspect the current program page and any available designation choices. A local shelter or cat-specific group may be a better fit if your priority is direct services in one community.

Look for current educational resources, professional initiatives, and research or welfare projects. Geographic reach and volunteer routes can differ from those of a local rescue, so decide whether international education and standards work matches your goal.
9. Morris Animal Foundation
Morris Animal Foundation funds animal-health research, including studies involving cats. Catster reported that the foundation had invested $19 million in more than 450 feline health studies, a figure attributed to the foundation through Catster’s article updated in 2026 rather than independently verified here.
Choose this route if you want donations to support research portfolios instead of direct rescue or adoption. Check the foundation’s current feline priorities, study updates, and donation designations before giving.
10. North Shore Animal League America
North Shore Animal League America is a rescue-and-adoption organization. It is a natural fit for supporters who want resources directed toward rescuing animals, preparing them for adoption, and placing them with homes.
Catster reported that the organization had saved more than 1.1 million animals by early 2024 and found homes for more than 56,000 pets in 2022. Those are article-reported figures with the dates attached; confirm current totals in the organization’s own publications. Adoption, fostering, volunteering, and donations may each support different stages of the rescue process.
11. PetSmart Charities
PetSmart Charities supports animal-welfare grants and facilitates adoptions. Rather than operating solely as a cat sanctuary or rescue, it can channel support through partner organizations and adoption initiatives.

This may appeal to donors who want grants and adoption infrastructure to strengthen shelters and rescues. Check the current grant programs, participating partners, and adoption events in your region before assuming a contribution will reach a particular shelter.
12. Senior Cat Action Network
Senior Cat Action Network concentrates on support and fostering for older cats. Senior cats can need patient foster homes, predictable routines, medication management, and adopters who value companionship over kitten behavior.

A recurring gift can be useful for ongoing care, while fostering provides the direct resource many senior-cat programs need most.
13. Stray Cat Alliance
Stray Cat Alliance combines TNR with wellness and medical care, adoption, and shelter support. It is a good fit for supporters who want a practical bridge between outdoor-cat services and helping cats move into homes when that is appropriate.
Before donating goods or volunteering, confirm which neighborhoods and shelters are currently served and whether the immediate need is trapping equipment, veterinary treatment, foster space, adoption help, or general funding.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Catster’s percentage ratings do—and do not—tell you
Catster reported the following percentages in its September 15, 2026 article: Alley Cat Allies 96%, Alley Cat Rescue 95%, ASPCA 99%, Best Friends Animal Society 99%, Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary 91%, EveryCat Health Foundation 91%, The Humane Society of the United States 97%, Morris Animal Foundation 98%, North Shore Animal League America 100%, and Stray Cat Alliance 95%.
The article does not provide enough methodological detail to establish what those percentages measure, whether the same method was applied to every organization, or whether the figures remain current. They should not be treated as a league table or as proof that one charity is more effective than another. Mission fit, current programs, location, transparency, and the support type you can provide are more useful decision criteria.

Ways to support a cat charity
Give money once or regularly
A one-time gift can respond to a campaign or emergency. Recurring donations help an organization plan for continuing expenses such as veterinary care, research grants, shelter operations, or community-cat services. Use the charity’s official donation page and read any designation options before completing the gift.
Make a legacy or in-memory gift
Legacy giving can place a charity in an estate plan, while an in-memory or in-honor donation can recognize a person or animal. Confirm the organization’s current instructions and acknowledgement process; do not assume every charity handles these gifts in the same way.
Buy only verified wish-list goods
Some charities publish online wish lists or request items such as washable cat blankets. Catster mentions blankets as an example of a possible wish-list purchase, but no blanket request for any of these 13 organizations is established here. Check the current official wish list, acceptable brands or specifications, shipping address, and delivery rules first. Buying through a marketplace does not automatically send money to a charity unless the charity explicitly says so.
Volunteer, foster, or fundraise
Rescues and adoption groups may need fosters, transport help, event staffing, administrative assistance, or peer-to-peer fundraisers. TNR organizations may need trained trappers and colony-care volunteers. Ask about age, training, insurance, time, and location requirements before committing.
Share accurate information
Education can be a meaningful contribution for advocacy, TNR, adoption, and cat-friendly veterinary care organizations. Share the charity’s own guidance, current adoption listings, and verified program information rather than repeating outdated statistics or unconfirmed appeals.
Check a charity before you donate
- Open the organization’s current official website and confirm its exact name and mission.
- Read the latest program or annual-report information to see what it actually does now.
- Check geographic scope and whether volunteering, fostering, or adoption is available where you live.
- Use only the official donation page or the address listed by the organization.
- For goods, verify the live wish list and shipping instructions before purchasing.
- Save the receipt, confirmation email, and any designation you selected.
This check matters because the 13 groups cover different causes and because program names, campaigns, and needs can change. A charity that is an excellent fit for one donor may be the wrong fit for another.
Why adoption and local support still matter
UK-specific data from Cats Protection’s CATS Report page illustrates why readers may value both adoption and community support: the page states that cats tend to be bought (38%), adopted from a UK rehoming charity (22%), or taken on from a neighbour, family member, or friend (14%). The page should be checked for the report’s survey year and methodology before those figures are used as a current population-wide estimate. The organization’s 2024 annual report describes work in cat welfare, research, and care for cats in need, but that UK context does not measure the other organizations in this list.
Use the statistic as context, not as a reason to favor one charity automatically. If your goal is to increase adoption, choose an organization with active placement and foster programs; if your goal is to reduce unplanned litters, look for TNR or spay/neuter work; if your goal is better treatment, consider veterinary education or feline-health research.
