There is no scientifically established single best food for every Sphynx cat. The safest starting point is a commercial food whose label says it is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage, followed by portions adjusted for age, weight, body condition, activity, appetite and health. A Sphynx may do well on an ordinary complete adult or kitten diet; breed imagery, an ingredient list or a “premium” claim cannot replace the nutritional-adequacy statement.
This guide gives you ten practical choices. Two are named products with manufacturer-published information; the remaining eight are selection profiles because independent evidence does not support ranking ten specific foods. Use the framework to compare the current package in your country, then involve a veterinarian for kittens, pregnancy, illness, obesity, unexplained weight change or a therapeutic diet.

What is the best cat food for a Sphynx cat?
For most healthy Sphynx cats, the best choice is a food that meets the appropriate AAFCO nutrient profile for the cat’s life stage and can be fed in an amount that maintains an ideal body condition. “Best” is therefore an individual decision, not a universal breed formula.

Ten practical picks for a Sphynx cat
The table separates products with specific published claims from eight useful selection profiles. The profiles are not secretly ranked brands: they describe the kind of food to look for and the situation in which it may fit.
| Pick | What it is | When it may fit | Verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Royal Canin Sphynx Adult dry food | A breed-positioned adult dry formula | A healthy adult whose owner wants to consider the manufacturer’s Sphynx formulation | The local package’s complete-and-balanced statement, adult life stage, calorie information and feeding guide |
| 2. Purina Pro Plan Adult Complete Essentials Salmon & Rice dry food | A general adult dry food | A healthy adult that does not need a therapeutic or life-stage-specific diet | That the current regional label says complete and balanced for adult maintenance and provides a weight-based guide |
| 3. Complete adult wet food | Canned food with an adult-maintenance adequacy statement | Adults that prefer wet texture or would benefit from additional dietary moisture | That it is a complete meal, not a complementary topper, and that calories per can or pouch are stated |
| 4. Complete kitten food | Food labeled for growth or all life stages, where appropriate | Kittens and young cats still growing | The growth or all-life-stages claim and feeding directions for the kitten’s current weight |
| 5. A veterinarian-selected diet for pregnancy or nursing | A diet chosen for reproduction rather than ordinary adult maintenance | Pregnant or lactating queens | Life-stage adequacy and a veterinary feeding plan; do not use an adult-maintenance label by assumption |
| 6. A calorie-dense complete food for a thin cat | A complete formula with calories that help meet intake in a smaller volume | Weight loss, poor appetite or a veterinarian-confirmed need for more energy | Calories per gram, can or cup, plus the medical reason for the plan |
| 7. A measured lower-calorie complete food | A complete formula used with controlled portions | Overweight cats or cats gaining weight | Calorie density, an accurate scale or measuring method and a target set with your veterinarian |
| 8. A mixed wet-and-dry plan | Complete foods in both formats, portioned together | Cats that enjoy variety or need a practical moisture-and-convenience balance | The combined daily calories; do not add a full wet and full dry serving on top of each other |
| 9. A veterinary diet for diagnosed disease | A therapeutic food selected for a documented condition | Kidney, urinary, gastrointestinal, allergy or other medical management when prescribed | The diagnosis, intended duration and recheck plan; a retail “sensitive” label is not equivalent |
| 10. A veterinary-guided diet trial | A controlled food choice for suspected intolerance or allergy | Recurring digestive or skin signs being investigated | Strict adherence to the trial, including treats and supplements, and veterinary follow-up |
1. Royal Canin Sphynx Adult dry food
Royal Canin Canada says this product is formulated to meet AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for adult maintenance. Royal Canin UK describes it as a high-calorie formula with increased fat intended to address the breed’s heightened energy needs. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent proof that every Sphynx requires extra calories.
Consider it only after checking the package sold in your market. Formulas, calorie density and feeding directions can differ by country or edition. If your cat is gaining excess fat, a high-calorie positioning is a reason to measure portions carefully, not a reason to feed freely.
2. Purina Pro Plan Adult Complete Essentials Salmon & Rice dry food
The manufacturer states that animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate complete and balanced nutrition for adult maintenance and provides a weight-based feeding guide. This is a general adult-food example, not a Sphynx-specific recommendation.
It can be a reasonable comparison point for a healthy adult when the current local label still carries the relevant adequacy statement. Compare its calories per cup with any other food you are considering; a different calorie density means the same measuring cup does not represent the same energy intake.

3. Complete adult wet food
Canned food is a format choice rather than a mandatory Sphynx treatment. Cornell states that canned cat food has at least 75 percent moisture and can be a good dietary source of water. A wet diet may suit a cat that prefers soft texture, but the can must say it is complete and balanced for adult maintenance (or another appropriate life stage).

Some wet foods are complementary products intended to be fed with another food; they cannot supply the entire diet unless the label says they can.
4. Complete kitten food
A Sphynx kitten needs a growth-appropriate nutritional claim, not an adult-maintenance food selected because it has a breed name. Look for a statement covering growth or all life stages and follow the package’s kitten directions.
Growth, body condition and appetite change quickly. Weigh a kitten regularly and ask your veterinarian to adjust portions if growth is slow, rapid or accompanied by diarrhea, vomiting or lethargy.
5. A veterinarian-selected diet for pregnancy or nursing
Pregnancy and lactation are different nutritional situations from adult maintenance. Choose the food and amount with veterinary guidance, because energy and nutrient needs change as the queen progresses through pregnancy and feeds kittens.

Do not infer that a high-calorie adult product is automatically suitable for reproduction. Confirm the label’s life-stage claim and obtain instructions for the queen and, later, the litter.

6. A calorie-dense complete food for a thin cat
A cat that is underweight, losing weight or eating poorly needs a cause investigated, not simply a richer food. Dental disease, gastrointestinal illness, endocrine disease, pain and other problems can reduce intake or increase losses.
If a veterinarian confirms that more energy is appropriate, compare calories per gram, cup or can and divide the daily amount into portions your cat will actually eat. Recheck weight and body condition rather than assuming that a high-fat or high-calorie claim will solve the problem.
7. A measured lower-calorie complete food
Cornell identifies obesity as a common nutrition-related problem and recommends veterinary help to determine ideal body weight. For an overweight Sphynx, the important intervention is a measured energy plan, not a fashionable ingredient list.

8. A mixed wet-and-dry plan
Combining complete wet and dry foods can make feeding easier and add moisture while retaining the convenience of kibble. The arithmetic matters: the wet and dry portions together must equal the cat’s daily calorie allowance.
Use each product’s own calorie information. A “half serving” of one food is not automatically equivalent to half a serving of another. Keep the same life-stage adequacy standard for both products.

9. A veterinary diet for diagnosed disease
Kidney, urinary, gastrointestinal, allergy and other therapeutic diets are medical tools. A retail food labeled “sensitive,” “indoor” or “natural” is not interchangeable with a prescription plan chosen for a diagnosis.
Ask what the diet is intended to change, how long it should be fed and when the cat needs a recheck. If the cat refuses it or develops new signs, contact the veterinary practice rather than substituting several foods at once.
10. A veterinary-guided diet trial
When food intolerance or allergy is suspected, a controlled diet trial is meaningful only if it is strict. The veterinarian may select a particular protein, hydrolyzed diet or other protocol. Treats, flavored medicines, toppers and supplements can invalidate the trial.
Keep a written record of food, symptoms, stool quality, scratching and body weight. Do not switch repeatedly on your own; each change makes the result harder to interpret.

Start with nutritional adequacy
Find the AAFCO nutritional-adequacy statement, usually near the guaranteed analysis or feeding directions. It should identify the life stage: growth, adult maintenance, reproduction, all life stages or another recognized category. “Premium,” “natural,” “holistic” and attractive ingredient photographs do not establish completeness.
Check the exact package in your region. A product name can remain similar while the formulation, calorie statement or regulatory wording changes between markets.

Use ingredients as context, not a quality score
WSAVA notes that ingredient lists can be misleading about quality. Ingredient order does not tell you whether the finished food supplies every required nutrient, how digestible it is or whether it suits your individual cat. Evaluate the adequacy statement, calorie information, manufacturer’s substantiation and your cat’s response together.
Compare calories, not cups
Two complete foods can have very different calorie densities. Record the product’s calories per cup, can, pouch or gram, then convert the daily amount into portions. Feeding charts provide a starting point; they do not account for every cat’s activity, metabolism, body condition or medical status.
Wet versus dry food for a Sphynx
Wet and dry are both viable formats when the food is complete and balanced for the correct life stage. Wet food’s moisture can help increase water intake; dry food is convenient to measure and store. The evidence here does not establish that every Sphynx must eat wet food or that every cat benefits from a particular moisture percentage beyond the general canned-food fact noted by Cornell.
Choose the format your cat will eat consistently, then account for calories. If you change formats, make the new food a planned portion of the daily ration rather than an uncounted extra.
How to choose and start a food safely
- Record the baseline. Note age, current weight, body condition, activity, appetite, stool quality, medical diagnoses and every treat or supplement.
- Ask whether a veterinary diet is needed. Illness, pregnancy, lactation, obesity, weight loss or persistent digestive signs warrant professional advice before shopping.
- Check the label. Confirm complete-and-balanced status, life stage, calories and feeding directions on the current package.
- Select a realistic format. Decide whether your household can portion wet, dry or a combination accurately and keep it fresh.
- Measure the daily amount. Start with the package guide, then adjust with veterinary input according to body condition and weight trend.
- Watch the cat, not the marketing. Track appetite, stool, vomiting, skin or coat changes, energy and weight. A food that looks ideal on paper may still not suit an individual cat.
- Reassess after a meaningful interval. Contact your veterinarian sooner for refusal to eat, repeated vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight change or other concerning signs.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming hairlessness proves a special calorie requirement. A manufacturer may position a Sphynx formula as high calorie or higher fat, but that claim is not a universal breed standard.
- Free-feeding a calorie-dense food. Measure portions, especially when the package emphasizes extra energy.
- Choosing by ingredient-list drama. Ingredient lists alone do not establish nutritional quality or suitability.
- Treating a complementary pouch as a complete meal. Verify the nutritional-adequacy statement.
- Ignoring the market on the label. Confirm the formulation and directions sold where you live.
- Adding supplements automatically. Cornell notes that supplements can be harmful and are usually unnecessary when a cat eats a balanced, complete diet. Use them only with veterinary guidance.
- Using raw food because it sounds biologically appropriate. Cornell says evidence for claimed raw-diet benefits is lacking, notes infection risks to cats and people, and does not recommend raw diets.
When a veterinarian should choose the food
Arrange professional guidance for a kitten, pregnant or nursing queen, unexplained weight loss, obesity, poor appetite, chronic vomiting or diarrhea, urinary signs, kidney disease, suspected allergy, or any cat already on a therapeutic diet. Bring the food label, feeding amount, treat list and recent weight history.
A veterinarian can determine ideal body weight, distinguish a food problem from an illness and set a calorie target that reflects the individual cat. That is more reliable than applying a fixed Sphynx multiplier that has not been established for the breed.
Bottom line for buying in 2026
Use the ten picks as a decision map, not as a claim that ten foods have been independently proven best. Start with complete-and-balanced nutrition and the correct life stage; compare calories and format; measure portions; and adjust for body condition under veterinary supervision. Royal Canin Sphynx Adult and Purina Pro Plan Adult Complete Essentials Salmon & Rice illustrate two different market positions, but neither label replaces an individualized feeding plan.
