Choose a species or blend
“Cat grass” is a category name for young cereal grasses, commonly wheat, oats, barley, or rye. A blend offers more than one type; single-species seed is the straightforward choice if you specifically want wheat or oat grass. Cat grass is not catnip, which is a different plant.

Seed-only products require you to supply a container and suitable growing medium. A complete cat grass growing kit may include some or all of those items, but do not assume every kit has the same contents. Read the current product description and instructions before ordering.
Look for refill availability

Consider the care you can provide
Growing grass means keeping an eye on it as it sprouts and grows. Catster advises checking for mold and maintaining fresh growth. Follow the package’s growing directions, avoid leaving damp, stale growth unchecked, and replace a batch when it is no longer in good condition. Before buying, confirm the product format, species or blend, package contents, refill options, instructions, and current price. Retailer ratings can provide shopper feedback, but they are not a substitute for matching the product to your needs.

Is cat grass good for cats?
Some cats nibble grass, and the behavior appears to be natural. That does not mean grass is required for a healthy diet: PetMD says cat grass is not medically necessary for cats eating modern diets with parasite prevention, and it is not standard treatment for intestinal disease. Treat it as an optional outlet for a cat that enjoys it, not as medicine or a proven way to prevent or resolve hairballs. - Use a controlled growing setup. Home-grown grass avoids lawn treatments only if you handle the seed and growing setup appropriately. Do not assume grass outdoors is untreated; it may have been exposed to pesticides or other chemicals.
- Inspect growth regularly. Look for mold and keep the grass fresh rather than leaving old growth in the container.
- Do not encourage excessive eating. Catster warns that consuming large amounts may contribute to obstruction, while long blades can irritate or lodge near the throat. These are cautions, not a prediction that every cat will be harmed.
- Ask a veterinarian about concerning changes. Seek veterinary advice for persistent or worrying grass-eating behavior or symptoms rather than relying on grass as treatment.
