Blood may come from a wound, the nose, mouth, urine, stool, or vomit—or be hidden inside the body. Its appearance alone cannot identify the cause, so call a veterinarian if you are unsure how serious it is.
When bleeding is an emergency
Seek immediate veterinary care for severe or uncontrolled bleeding, suspected trauma with possible internal injury, pale or white gums, weakness, collapse, breathing difficulty, a penetrating chest or abdominal wound, possible poisoning, or inability to urinate. A cat can deteriorate from blood loss or shock. Do not wait for visible blood if your cat has been hit, fallen, or otherwise injured and is acting unwell.

At an emergency clinic, the team will first assess urgent threats to the airway, breathing, and circulation. Trauma can cause internal bleeding, organ rupture, fractures, or other injuries even when the external wound looks small or is not apparent.
Where might the blood be coming from?
Skin, paws, or a broken nail
A cut, bite, broken nail, or other injury may explain blood on the body. But the surface can make a wound look smaller than it is, and it is difficult to judge depth or internal damage at home.

Nose
A nosebleed can originate in the nostril, nasal cavity, or upper throat. Trauma and infection are common causes; other possibilities include rodenticide exposure, liver failure, viral disease, or a clotting disorder. Cats may swallow nasal blood, which can later appear as dark stool or clots in vomit. After a nosebleed, those signs do not necessarily mean the digestive tract is the source. VCA’s cat nosebleed guidance advises against inserting absorbent material into the nostrils because it can trigger sneezing and worsen bleeding.
Urine, stool, or vomit
Blood in urine, stool, or vomit can reflect bleeding or another illness and needs veterinary assessment. Ongoing vomiting or diarrhea, weakness, straining, or possible toxin exposure makes prompt care especially important. Blood in urine with difficulty urinating is urgent; inability to urinate can itself be an emergency.

Gums, bruising, or pinpoint spots
Unexplained bruises, gum bleeding, or tiny red-purple spots under the skin (petechiae) may point to a platelet, clotting, or systemic problem rather than one surface wound. These signs warrant veterinary evaluation even if the cat seems otherwise stable.
Possible internal bleeding
Internal bleeding is not always visible. After trauma, weakness, collapse, pale gums, or a swollen or painful abdomen should raise concern. Only veterinary assessment can establish whether internal bleeding is occurring.

What can cause a cat to bleed?
Trauma is a common cause, but bleeding can also result from problems with platelets, clotting proteins, or blood vessels; anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning; liver disease; infection or inflammation; cancer; and other systemic illness. Nosebleeds may also arise from local trauma or infection. The same visible sign can have different causes, so unexplained bleeding needs a veterinary workup rather than a home diagnosis.
Blood clotting involves several parts. Platelets and blood vessels help form an initial plug; clotting proteins help stabilize it. Problems with clotting proteins may cause delayed bleeding, deep bruising, or bleeding into joints or body cavities. Platelet problems can show up as skin or gum bruising and nosebleeds. A veterinarian can assess which, if any, of these mechanisms is involved.

What to do while arranging veterinary care
- Call a veterinarian or emergency clinic. Describe where you see blood, when it began, how much there is, any injury or possible toxin exposure, and how your cat is behaving. If severe signs are present, go in immediately.
- For a visible wound, apply steady pressure. Press clean gauze or a clean towel firmly against it. If blood soaks through, leave the first layer in place, add more material on top, and maintain pressure while seeking care. Merck Veterinary Manual’s emergency guidance likewise recommends firm pressure and a firm, but not overly tight, bandage.
- Keep your cat calm and transport carefully. Protect yourself from bites and scratches; an injured or frightened cat may react suddenly.
- Do not probe or obstruct the injury. Do not pull out an embedded object, probe a wound, or put cotton swabs or other material into a bleeding nostril.
- Do not give human medication. Give medication only if a veterinarian specifically directs you to.
- If poisoning is possible, call promptly. Keep the product label or packaging available. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian or poison service instructs you to.
Pressure is temporary first aid for visible external bleeding; it does not treat internal bleeding or the underlying cause.

What to expect at the veterinary clinic
After stabilizing immediate threats, the veterinary team will ask about possible injury, access to toxins, medications, and when the bleeding began. The examination and any follow-up tests depend on the suspected source and your cat’s condition. They may include blood tests, urinalysis, or imaging. For unexplained bleeding, evaluation may look at platelet counts, clotting factors, local blood-vessel problems, and underlying disease.

Treatment depends on the cause and severity. Emergency hemorrhage care may involve controlling the bleeding, resuscitation, blood products, or surgery; not every cat needs every test or treatment.
How to make the call
Tell the clinic where the blood appeared, whether it is continuing, when you first noticed it, and whether your cat has had an injury or could have reached a toxin. Mention pale gums, weakness, collapse, breathing trouble, straining, or changes in urination. If you cannot tell whether the situation is serious, call and describe what you see rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen.
