It is not automatically the right litter for every cat: texture, fragrance, dust, tracking, maintenance, price and your cat’s willingness to use the box all matter.
The 13 picks below come from Cats.com’s review updated September 17, 2026. The review reports 1,275 hours of research, 51 brands vetted and 13 features assessed, with products purchased and tested at home by Kate Barrington with her cats, Munchkin and Biscuit. Those are the publisher’s reported review-scope figures, not an independent laboratory certification. See the full methodology at Cats.com’s 13 Best Cat Litters of 2026 review.

Cats.com says Barrington personally bought each litter and used it at home with Munchkin and Biscuit. Her comparison watched dust, tracking, odor control, ease of scooping, the cats’ preferences and how products performed against similar options. In her methodology, she summarizes the approach this way: “When testing cat litter products, I monitor metrics like dust level, tracking, odor control, and ease of scooping.”
#1 Best Overall
- PREMIUM QUALITY: A combination of premium texture and granule size made with 100% bentonite clay for maximum clumping creates litter particles that are just the right size.
- LOW DUST: Ideal for cats and owners who suffer from allergies with a 99.9% dust-free and hypoallergenic litter formulation.
- HARD CLUMPING: Hard clumping medium grain clay helps prevent moisture from reaching the bottom of the tray and forms hard clumps that won't break down, making it easier to scoop.
- SUPERIOR ODOR CONTROL: Formulated for single or multi-cat households with natural ingredients to keep your home smelling clean and fresh between litter box cleanings.
- LOW TRACKING: A unique formulation of medium grain clay helps keep litter in the box where it belongs.
The home test is useful practical evidence, but it is not a controlled laboratory study and the two cats cannot represent every cat. The 1,275-hour, 51-brand and 13-feature figures are Cats.com’s own reported scope for that review. Individual results can change with litter-box design, humidity, number of cats, cleaning frequency and a cat’s texture preferences.
Detailed picks and their trade-offs
Best overall: Boxiecat Probiotic Clumping Clay Litter
This unscented clay is the review’s overall winner. It is designed to clump quickly and tightly, making urine-clump removal straightforward, while probiotics are included for odor control. The principal caution is tracking: some customer feedback cited in the review reports granules carried beyond the box. It is a practical starting point when you want conventional clay performance without added fragrance, provided your cat accepts the texture and you can manage tracked pieces.
Least tracking: Tuft & Paw Really Great Cat Litter
The product uses lightweight soybean byproduct (tofu) pellets and comes in three formulas. The review identifies Unscented Charcoal and Lavender-Scented as compostable and flushable, while OdorStop contains bentonite and is not flushable. Those descriptions apply to the named formulas, not automatically to the whole product line. Local wastewater rules and your plumbing still determine whether disposal is appropriate. Larger pellets can help keep litter near the box, but cats that prefer fine grains may need a gradual transition.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBest natural formula: Catalyst Pet Multi-Cat Formula
Catalyst uses upcycled softwood fiber and clumps without fragrance or crystalline silica dust. That combination appeals to households seeking a plant-based, multi-cat option. The review notes that initial dust and tracking can still occur, especially while you and your cat are adjusting to the material. Monitor whether clumps remain easy to remove and whether the wood texture is comfortable for every cat sharing the box.
Best for automatic litter boxes: Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Slide
This clumping clay forms tight clumps and is formulated to resist sticking to the box, characteristics that can reduce residue on an automatic rake or rotating mechanism. Automatic boxes differ in their minimum-fill lines, acceptable granule size and cleaning cycles, so check the machine’s instructions before committing. A litter that clumps well in a manual pan may still behave differently when the device sifts it.
Best low-dust option: SmartCat Unscented Clumping Grass
SmartCat uses renewable grass material and has no added fragrance. The review places it in the low-dust category, while warning that tracking and slower-hardening clumps are possible. Give clumps enough time to set before scooping and keep a mat beneath the entry if granules travel. Cats that dislike scented clay may prefer this neutral formula, but acceptance of the grass texture remains individual.

- FRESH, CLEAN SMELL: Fresh Step Heavy Duty Cat Litter combines natural clay with carbon, Ammonia Block Technology, and Febreze freshness for next level odor control
Dust-free category: Naturally Fresh Multi-Cat Unscented Walnut
This walnut litter is unscented and clumping, with strong odor control in the review’s assessment. Its dark color is the key usability issue: it can be harder to see how much clean litter remains or whether the pan needs refreshing. Tracking is also possible. Use a consistent fill depth and inspect the pan by touch and weight rather than relying only on visual color changes.
Best budget choice: Tidy Cats 24/7 Performance
This scented clumping clay was listed at an estimated price of about $0.50 per pound when purchased in bulk. That displayed figure is time-sensitive and can change with bag size, retailer and promotion. Customer experiences with dust are mixed. It is worth considering when recurring cost is the deciding factor, but households with fragrance-sensitive cats should compare an unscented alternative before buying a large supply.
Premium natural pick: World’s Best Low-Tracking & Dust Control Multiple Cat
Whole-kernel corn and enlarged granules are intended to combine clumping with reduced tracking. The review notes two acceptance issues: some cats dislike the larger-granule feel, and some people dislike the odor when the litter becomes wet. This is a good example of a category trade-off—cleaner floors may come at the expense of a texture or smell your household finds less pleasant.
Best for odor control: Fresh Step Heavy Duty 30-Day Odor Control
The formula makes hard clumps and uses carbon intended to eliminate odor. “30-day” appears in the product name and category description; it is a product claim, not a promise that every box will remain odor-free for 30 days. Scooping frequency, the number of cats and ventilation still affect results. Choose it when odor is the dominant problem and your cat tolerates scented litter.
Best lightweight litter: Okocat Original Premium Wood
Okocat uses sustainably sourced wood fiber in a clumping, lightweight format. Lower bag weight can make storage and pouring easier, particularly in multi-box homes. The review identifies tracking as a potential compromise. Place the box on a large, washable mat and check that the wood granules do not cling to paws or long fur.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Best health-monitoring feature: PrettyLitter
These silica-gel crystals change color in response to urine pH. That can draw attention to a change worth discussing with a veterinarian, but the review explicitly states that PrettyLitter is not a diagnostic tool. A color shift does not prove a disease, identify a cause or replace an examination and testing by a veterinary professional. Treat the color as an observation, not a medical result.

- FRESH STEP CLUMPING CAT LITTER: Two 18.5-lb. boxes of Amazon exclusive Fresh Step Advanced Clumping Litter with Febreze freshness with Febreze Gain scent to keep litter boxes smelling fresh
- 15-DAY ODOR CONTROL: Naturally strong clay enhanced with odor fighting power, Ammonia Block Technology and activated charcoal in this Fresh Step litter help control odors for 15 days guaranteed (2)
- FORMS TIGHT CLUMPS: Kitten litter clumps tight around cat urine and waste for easy scooping and helps prevent crumbles from being left behind in the kitty litter box
- EXTRA-STRENGTH SCENT: Fresh Step cat litter with extra-strength (1) Febreze Gain scent and the power of Febreze freshness to help keep your home smelling clean
- LOW-DUST FORMULA: Low-dust cat litter formula helps keep your floors and other surfaces cleaner
Best for kittens: Fresh News Recycled Paper
Fresh News consists of low-dust, non-clumping recycled paper pellets. Cats.com recommends non-clumping litter during early kitten training in case a kitten ingests litter while grooming; that is the review’s guidance, not a substitute for advice from your veterinarian. Because urine is not removed as a firm clump, the product needs regular changing. Keep the box clean enough that a young cat continues to choose it reliably.
Best crystal option: Ultra Micro Crystals Unscented Premium Non-Clumping
Fine silica-gel crystals absorb liquid rather than forming scoopable clay clumps. The listed maintenance routine includes stirring and removing solid waste, with replacement based on saturation and odor. Its unscented format avoids added perfume, but the crystal feel is unlike clay or pellets. Introduce it only if your cat accepts the texture and follow the package’s fill and changing directions.

1. Match the material to paw comfort
Clay, crystal, wood, grass, paper, walnut, corn and tofu/soy all feel different under a cat’s paws. Granule size matters as much as the ingredient: enlarged corn granules and tofu pellets can track less, while a cat accustomed to fine clay may reject them. If your cat has a history of avoiding a particular texture, prioritize acceptance over a category label.

2. Decide whether clumping fits your routine
Clumping litter lets you remove urine as a discrete mass, which can simplify daily cleaning and preserve the remaining litter. Non-clumping paper and crystal products require a different routine: remove solids, stir or redistribute where directed, and replace the medium more often when it becomes saturated. Neither format is automatically superior; the right choice is the one you will maintain consistently.
3. Separate dust from tracking
Dust describes fine particles released during pouring or digging; tracking describes granules carried out of the box. They are related but not identical. Larger pellets may reduce tracking while feeling less comfortable, and lightweight materials can travel despite producing little visible dust. A mat, a box with a suitable entry and careful pouring can reduce mess, but no litter eliminates it for every cat.
4. Treat fragrance and odor claims cautiously
Odor control depends on the litter’s ingredients plus prompt waste removal, ventilation and the number of cats. Carbon, probiotics and absorbent materials work differently. Synthetic fragrance can bother some cats, so an unscented formula is the safer first comparison when a cat avoids a scented box. Product names such as “30-day” describe marketing claims, not a guaranteed result in your home.

- AUTOMATIC LITTER BOX-FRIENDLY: Works in both traditional and robotic litter boxes; 99.9% dust-free formula
- 10% MORE ODOR ELIMINATORS: Online-only Platinum formulas have 10% more odor eliminators than base formulas

5. Calculate the real cost
Compare current price per pound and bag size, not only the shelf price. Bulk buying can reduce the unit cost, while subscriptions from some sellers may change delivery convenience and price. Prices and stock are volatile; the roughly $0.50-per-pound Tidy Cats estimate cited above was a displayed bulk-purchase figure in the review, not a permanent rate.
6. Reserve specialty features for genuine needs
Automatic-box compatibility, kitten-safe training and urine-color monitoring can narrow the field. Confirm the automatic box manufacturer’s approved materials, use non-clumping kitten guidance only when it fits your veterinarian’s advice, and never use a color-changing litter as a stand-alone health test. Specialty features should solve a real household problem rather than override your cat’s willingness to use the box.
Practical buying checklist
- Write down whether your priority is odor, dust, tracking, carrying weight, kitten training or automatic-box operation.
- Choose unscented first if your cat has shown aversion to perfume.
- Check the stated material and granule size against what your cat already accepts.
- Confirm whether the product clumps and what the package says about scooping, stirring and replacement.
- Price the exact bag size you will buy; do not assume a displayed estimate remains current.
- For flushable language, verify the specific formula and your local wastewater rules before disposal.
- When changing materials, keep the box clean and watch whether your cat continues using it normally.
Important limits on health, dust and disposal claims
The Cats.com review discusses potential inhalation concerns associated with crystalline silica dust, but that health claim was not independently validated here. For a cat, person or household with respiratory concerns, ask a veterinarian or qualified health professional for advice rather than relying on a marketing category such as “dust-free.”
Flushability is formula-specific in the Tuft & Paw range and should never be treated as universal permission to flush litter. Local authorities and wastewater systems can prohibit it even when packaging uses the word “flushable.” Bagging waste is the safer default unless local guidance says otherwise.
PrettyLitter’s color response is an observation about urine pH, not proof of illness. If you notice repeated changes or other concerning signs, contact a veterinarian; do not delay care while waiting for a litter color to provide certainty.
Bottom line
Choose Boxiecat Probiotic Clumping Clay for the broadest combination of fast clumping, unscented use and odor control. Choose a different winner when your constraint is more specific: Tuft & Paw for low tracking, Fresh News for the review’s kitten guidance, Arm & Hammer Slide for an automatic box, SmartCat for a low-dust grass formula, PrettyLitter for visual pH monitoring with strict medical limits, or a crystal, wood, walnut, corn or paper option when its texture and maintenance better fit your cat.
