The best dog boots for a large dog depend on the surface and weather, not the dog’s weight or breed label. Choose Ruffwear Grip Trex for rugged, varied terrain; Ruffwear Polar Trex for snow, ice, and cold; and Ruffwear Summit Trex for everyday mixed conditions. Measure every paw while your dog is standing, because front and rear paws can need different sizes. No single boot is right for every dog or activity.

Why a large dog may need boots
Boots create a physical layer between paw pads and hazards that are difficult to avoid on walks. Rough rock, abrasive trail surfaces, hot ground, frozen snow, sharp ice, and de-icing chemicals can all irritate or injure paws. Winter boots also help keep snow and slush away from the pads and fur between the toes.

Protection is conditional, however. A boot designed to breathe on summer trails is not automatically warm or waterproof enough for a long outing in deep snow. Conversely, a heavily weatherproof winter boot can be unnecessarily warm for a dry hike. Start by identifying the most demanding surface and weather your dog will encounter, then compare construction, traction, water resistance, retention, and fit.
“Large dog” describes body size, not a dependable boot size. A broad-chested dog can have relatively narrow feet, while another dog of the same weight can have much wider paws. Measure the paws rather than choosing a size from breed, shoulder height, or body weight.

Rugged trails and varied terrain: Grip Trex
Grip Trex is the condition-specific choice for hiking, biking, running, and outdoor exploration where the ground changes frequently. Ruffwear describes it as a breathable boot with a rugged Vibram outsole. The mesh upper favors airflow during active use, while the outsole is intended for traction and abrasion resistance on varied terrain. A hook-and-loop cinch closure lets you tighten the boot around the leg.

Snow, ice, and cold: Polar Trex
Polar Trex is the winter-focused option. Its waterproof and windproof softshell upper is designed to block wet, cold conditions, and its stretch gaiter helps cover the upper paw and lower leg. Winter-specific glass-fiber traction lugs are intended for snow and ice, while the construction is also specified for exposure to snowmelt chemicals.

Select Polar Trex when keeping water and cold out matters more than maximum ventilation. “Waterproof” describes the published upper construction; it does not guarantee that water cannot enter around an incorrectly fitted opening or after wear. Follow the manufacturer’s fit directions and check the boots during the outing. See the Polar Trex winter boot listing for current details.
Everyday mixed conditions: Summit Trex
Summit Trex is the general-purpose option for routine protection. Ruffwear describes it for slush, ice, salt, abrasion, rain, and snow, with a weather-resistant upper and non-marking outsole. That combination suits short neighborhood walks and changing daily conditions when you need more coverage than an unprotected paw but do not need a dedicated trail or deep-winter design.
Because the published specifications do not identify a separate insulation rating or a specialized winter lug pattern, treat Summit Trex as an all-season protection boot rather than assuming it performs like a cold-weather boot on prolonged icy outings. The Ruffwear dog boots collection is the place to confirm the current model and availability.
Compare the features that affect comfort and safety
Traction
Outsole design should match the surface. Rugged trail outsoles are useful on rock and loose ground; winter-specific lugs target snow and ice; a non-marking outsole is practical indoors and on ordinary paved routes. Traction cannot compensate for a boot that is too loose, because the foot can slide inside the boot and the boot can rotate away from the paw.
Insulation and breathability
Breathable mesh is valuable when a dog is moving in mild or warm conditions, while a waterproof, windproof upper is more appropriate for cold precipitation. The published information identifies construction for Grip Trex and Polar Trex but does not provide a universal temperature rating or insulation number. Do not infer a safe exposure time from the model name alone; monitor your dog and the paws.

Water and chemical resistance
Snowmelt chemicals and road salt can irritate paw pads. Polar Trex is specifically described for snowmelt chemicals, and Summit Trex is described for salt and wet mixed conditions. A weather-resistant or waterproof upper still requires a secure fit at the opening. Rinse and dry boots after exposure to salt or chemical slush according to the manufacturer’s care instructions.
Closure and retention
A closure must be snug enough to prevent rotation without restricting circulation. Grip Trex uses a hook-and-loop cinch. Polar Trex combines a winter upper with a stretch gaiter and its closure system. Summit Trex’s supplied specifications do not state the closure details, so inspect the current product instructions before buying if retention is your main concern.
Measure every paw before ordering
Accurate measurement is more important than the “large dog” label. Ruffwear instructs owners to measure across the widest part of the paw while the dog is bearing weight. A lifted paw spreads differently and can produce a misleadingly small measurement.
- Place your dog on a firm, level surface.
- Put one front paw on a sheet of paper while the dog stands normally. Repeat for each paw; do not assume the four measurements match.
- Mark the widest points of the paw, including the outer edges of the nails if they extend to the ground.
- Measure between the marks in inches and record the front-left, front-right, rear-left, and rear-right values separately.
- Compare each measurement with the specific manufacturer’s chart. Ruffwear advises sizing down when a measurement falls between sizes.
Ruffwear’s published chart lists widths from 1.50 to 3.25 inches in these increments:
| Chart width (inches) | Use when the measured paw width corresponds to this listed size |
|---|---|
| 1.50 | Measure at the widest point and select according to the chart |
| 1.75 | Measure at the widest point and select according to the chart |
| 2.00 | Measure at the widest point and select according to the chart |
| 2.25 | Measure at the widest point and select according to the chart |
| 2.50 | Measure at the widest point and select according to the chart |
| 2.75 | Measure at the widest point and select according to the chart |
| 3.00 | Measure at the widest point and select according to the chart |
| 3.25 | Measure at the widest point and select according to the chart |
The chart is a width guide, not a promise that every paw shape will feel identical in a boot. If your dog’s measurement is between two listed sizes, Ruffwear’s instruction is to size down. For another manufacturer, follow that brand’s own measuring method rather than transferring this chart.

Use different sizes for front and rear paws when needed
Front and rear paws frequently differ in width. Ruffwear sells these boots in sets of two, allowing you to order one size for the front pair and another for the rear pair. Record the measurements before placing the order so you do not accidentally buy four boots in one size.
For a four-foot setup, order two pairs: one pair in the front-paw size and one pair in the rear-paw size. If you need only two boots for a specific injury or activity, confirm with your veterinarian which feet should be covered and follow the product’s use instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fit and introduce boots gradually
Check the fit indoors
Put the boots on clean, dry paws and watch your dog stand and walk on a non-slip indoor surface. The paw should sit flat rather than being pushed backward, and the boot should not twist as the dog takes several steps. Look for rubbing at the toes, dewclaws, ankle, and top edge. Remove the boot and recheck if your dog repeatedly lifts a foot, chews at the closure, or changes gait.
Build tolerance in short sessions
Many dogs need time to coordinate their steps in footwear. Start with one or two boots for a brief indoor session, reward calm walking, then progress to all four boots and longer periods. Move outside only after your dog can walk normally indoors. Stop if the dog shows persistent distress or a sore area and reassess the size, placement, and closure.

Grip Trex instructions recommend checking the closure and adjusting fit about 15 minutes into activity and throughout the outing. This is useful for any boot: movement, moisture, and changes in gait can loosen a closure or shift the boot. Check that the boot has not rotated, that the closure remains secure, and that no debris has entered.

When boots are not the right solution
PetMD cautions that winter boots offer strong protection from the elements but are not right for every dog or every situation. A dog may refuse footwear, develop rubbing despite careful fitting, or need a medical plan for a paw injury. In those cases, ask your veterinarian about the safest alternative rather than forcing prolonged wear.
Paw wax is a limited option for dogs that cannot tolerate boots. Veterinary-reviewed guidance describes wax as a barrier against dampness and chemicals. It does not shield the paw from sharp ice, abrasive rock, or other penetrating hazards, so it is not equivalent to a protective boot. Apply only a product intended for dogs and follow its label directions.
Common buying and use mistakes
- Choosing by breed or weight: body size does not establish paw width. Measure all four feet.
- Using a trail boot for deep winter: breathable mesh and a rugged outsole do not provide the same weather protection as a waterproof, windproof winter upper.
- Assuming every “winter” boot has the same traction: look for the stated outsole or lug design and match it to snow, ice, or pavement.
- Ordering one size for all feet: front and rear measurements can differ; use the two-pair format when necessary.
- Skipping a fit check: a boot that looks secure can rotate or loosen after movement. Recheck it during the walk.
- Treating wax as complete protection: wax helps with dampness and chemicals but does not protect against sharp ice.
- Assuming published claims are independent test results: the use cases and prices here are manufacturer-published information, not controlled comparative testing.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the primary hazard. Choose abrasion and ventilation for rugged trails, waterproof winter construction for snow and ice, or general weather resistance for everyday mixed conditions.
- Measure each paw under load. Write down four widths while your dog is standing.
- Apply the brand’s sizing rule. For Ruffwear, size down between sizes; for other brands, use their chart and method.
- Decide whether all four feet need coverage. If they do, buy two pairs and select separate sizes when the measurements require it.
- Test the fit indoors. Check gait, rubbing, and rotation before going outside.
- Recheck after about 15 minutes and throughout activity. Tighten or reposition only as directed, and stop if discomfort persists.
- Inspect paws after removal. Look for redness, abrasion, trapped grit, or dampness before the next outing.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The listed models have clearly differentiated manufacturer-described roles: Grip Trex for varied outdoor terrain, Polar Trex for winter conditions, and Summit Trex for everyday mixed exposure. The published material does not establish a universal best boot for every large breed, a guaranteed comfort or retention rate, or a controlled ranking of one model over another. Your dog’s measured paw shape, tolerance, gait, and actual walking conditions should determine the final choice.
