German Shepherds need more than a toy that survives five minutes of chewing. They are powerful, active, intelligent dogs, so the most useful toy collection usually includes a durable chew, a fetch toy, a food dispenser, and something for supervised tug or problem-solving.

Our top pick is the KONG Extreme, but it is not the best tool for every job. The recommendations below separate chewing from fetching and enrichment, with sizing and safety details that matter for a large breed.

Best overall: KONG Extreme

The KONG Extreme is the most versatile choice for a German Shepherd that chews, retrieves and enjoys working for food. It is made from KONG’s black natural-rubber formula, the company’s strongest rubber, and can be filled with kibble, wet food or treats. Freezing the filled toy makes the activity last longer.

It bounces unpredictably for short games of fetch and can provide a constructive activity during crate time or when your dog needs to settle. It should not, however, be treated as indestructible. KONG says to supervise use and remove the toy as soon as it becomes damaged.

Which KONG Extreme size?

KONG lists the following weight ranges:

  • Large: 30–65 lb
  • X-Large: 60–90 lb
  • XX-Large: 85 lb and over

Many adult German Shepherds will fall around the Large or X-Large starting point, but weight alone is not enough. Consider head size, jaw strength and whether your dog tries to swallow toys. KONG recommends sizing up for power chewers, and the largest part of the toy should be wider than the back of the dog’s mouth.

For cleaning, KONG’s rubber toys can go on the top rack of a dishwasher. Skip the drying cycle: the company warns that excess heat can damage the rubber.

Best fetch ball: West Paw Jive

The West Paw Jive is a strong option for a German Shepherd that carries, chases and mouths a ball between throws. The large ball measures 3.25 inches, floats, and has an irregular bounce that makes a familiar game less predictable.

Its smooth Zogoflex surface is preferable to a felt-covered tennis ball for dogs that chew their fetch toys. Felt can act as an abrasive surface against the teeth. West Paw describes the Jive as suitable for super chewers, but also makes clear that no dog toy is indestructible. Inspect it after every session and retire it if it is punctured or missing material. It is dishwasher safe.

Best for a launcher: Chuckit! Ultra Ball

For a German Shepherd that loves sprinting after a ball, the Chuckit! Ultra Ball is designed for high-energy fetch. It has a thick rubber core, high visibility, buoyancy and compatibility with Chuckit! launchers. Sizes range from Small through XX-Large.

Rank #2
Kong Extreme Dog Toy 2-Pack, Large - Tough Chew Toys for Aggressive Chewers - Black Durable Rubber
  • Ultra-strong, ultra-durable, Black rubber compound is recommended for the most powerful chewers
  • Used worldwide by police, drug enforcement and military K-9 TEAMS; also used by schutzhund and akc competition trainers
  • Perfect for stuffing with KONG treats; helps reduce boredom and separation anxiety for powerful chewers
  • Unpredictable bounce for games of fetch
  • Made in USA

Choose a ball that cannot be pulled completely into your dog’s mouth. A toy that fits entirely in the mouth presents a greater choking risk. The Ultra Ball is a fetch toy, not a promise that your dog can chew unattended for hours. Check it after each game and discard it if it splits, becomes punctured or loses pieces.

Best food puzzle: Ruffwear Gnawt-a-Rock

The Ruffwear Gnawt-a-Rock combines movement and problem-solving. Put kibble or small treats inside, then let your dog roll, nudge and chase the irregularly shaped toy as food falls out. It can also be used for fetch and is useful for slowing down a dog that eats meals too quickly.

It is a large 4.5-inch toy made from natural latex rubber. Ruffwear classifies its chew style as “Power,” but still recommends supervision and says to discard it if any part becomes loose or detached. A determined German Shepherd may damage it while trying to reach the food, so this is enrichment—not a replacement for a dedicated chew.

Best heavy-duty chew: Goughnuts Large Ring

The Goughnuts Large Ring is designed for dogs weighing 60–100 lb and measures 6.25 inches across, with a 2.19-inch cross-section. It is a better match than a thin ring for a large dog whose main interest is chewing.

The green version contains a red inner safety layer. If red becomes visible, Goughnuts says to remove the ring and return it for replacement under its guarantee. The black Heavy Duty version is described as more durable but does not include that visual indicator, so it requires careful owner inspection.

Rank #3
KONG Extreme Goodie Bone, Durable Natural Rubber, Black, for Large Dogs

Do not assume every Goughnuts product has the same purpose. The company specifically labels its Black 50 Ball “NOT for chewing”; it is intended for interactive play and fetching.

Best tug toy: Goughnuts Large Tug

The Goughnuts Large Tug is listed for dogs weighing 60 lb and over and measures 11 × 6 × 1.5 inches. It is made for interactive tug with a person or another dog, making it useful for training, controlled play and relationship-building.

Goughnuts explicitly says this toy is not a power-chewing toy. Put it away after the game rather than leaving it on the floor as an unsupervised chew object. If your German Shepherd grabs, shakes or guards tug toys intensely, keep sessions short and end the game before either dog becomes over-aroused.

Best rolling food dispenser: KONG Wobbler

The KONG Wobbler is a hard plastic dispenser for dry food and small treats. Your dog has to push, nose and roll it to release the contents, turning part of a meal into a physical and mental activity.

KONG lists the Large Wobbler for medium-to-large dogs. It unscrews for filling and cleaning and is dishwasher safe. Unlike the rubber KONG Extreme, it is intended to be manipulated rather than continuously chewed. Supervise the first few sessions, particularly if your dog attacks food toys with its teeth instead of rolling them.

How to choose the right toy for your German Shepherd

  1. Match the toy to the activity. Use a rubber chew for chewing, a ball for fetch, a dispenser for food enrichment and a tug for supervised interaction. No single toy needs to perform every job.
  2. Size for the mouth, not the breed label. A German Shepherd that swallows objects needs a larger toy than one that gently retrieves. Avoid any toy that can fit entirely in the mouth or become lodged in the throat.
  3. Test the toy under supervision. Watch whether your dog carries, rolls, retrieves, chews, shreds or tries to swallow it. The same product can be safe for one dog and unsuitable for another.
  4. Use food toys strategically. Measure the food inside a dispenser rather than adding treats on top of a full daily ration. If dogs guard food-filled toys, separate them with a door, pen, crate or baby gate.
  5. Rotate rather than overusing. Keep a few toys available and store the rest. Rotation can preserve novelty, while fetch, tug and food puzzles provide different kinds of work.

Toys and chews to avoid or use cautiously

Bones, antlers and very hard chews

Natural does not mean harmless. Bones can break large chewing teeth, splinter, injure the mouth or cause choking. Antlers, hard nylon and other rigid chews can also fracture teeth; hard nylon toys may break into pieces that a dog can swallow. The commonly used fingernail test—if you cannot dent it, it may be too hard—is only a rough screening tool, not a safety guarantee.

Ordinary tennis balls

Tennis balls are not automatically toxic, but they are a poor choice for an obsessive ball-chewer. The felt can wear tooth enamel, and a small or damaged ball can become a choking hazard. Smooth rubber fetch balls such as the Jive or Ultra Ball are more suitable for dogs that chew between throws.

Rope toys

Rope can work for supervised tug, but remove it as soon as it starts to unravel. Swallowed fibers can bunch together and cause a serious gastrointestinal obstruction.

Plush and squeaky toys

Soft toys are suitable only for dogs that do not immediately shred and ingest them. Squeakers, stuffing, fabric and detached eyes or other parts can cause choking or blockage. Introduce them under supervision and retire them at the first sign of destruction.

Do dog toys clean a German Shepherd’s teeth?

Chewing may mechanically remove some surface plaque, but a standard rubber toy should not be marketed as dental treatment. The Veterinary Oral Health Council’s accepted-products list covers specific edible chews, dental diets, water additives, gels, sprays, toothpastes, brushes and wipes. A general-purpose toy is not automatically VOHC accepted.

  • KONG: Since not all toys are created equal, it’s always best to supervise your dog during play. Supervised play will help toys last longer and keep your dog safe. No dog toy is truly indestructible, so always remove the toy from playtime if damaged

If dental health is the goal, ask your veterinarian about brushing and products appropriate for your dog’s size. Follow the manufacturer’s size instructions and supervise edible dental chews while they are being consumed.

Toy safety checklist

  • Inspect new toys before giving them to your dog.
  • Check frequently for cracks, punctures, loose pieces, exposed stuffing, broken rubber and severe fraying.
  • Remove damaged toys immediately; do not trim off one dangerous section and assume the rest is safe.
  • Never rely on the word “indestructible.” Even manufacturers warn that dogs differ and damaged toys must be removed.
  • Keep high-value food toys away from dogs that guard resources.
  • If your dog swallows part of a toy, contact a veterinarian promptly. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to.

Call urgently if ingestion is followed by choking, repeated vomiting, abdominal pain, lethargy, loss of appetite or difficulty passing stool. Toy fragments can cause an obstruction, perforation or other emergency that may require endoscopy or surgery.

FAQ

What is the best toy for a German Shepherd that destroys everything?

Start with a correctly sized KONG Extreme or Goughnuts Large Ring, then supervise the first sessions. Neither is indestructible. Remove the toy when you see cracks, punctures, loose material or other damage.

What size KONG Extreme should a German Shepherd use?

Many adult German Shepherds will begin with Large or X-Large, depending on weight, head size and chewing behavior. KONG lists Large for 30–65 lb, X-Large for 60–90 lb and XX-Large for 85 lb and over. Size up for a power chewer and ensure the toy cannot fit entirely in the mouth.

Are tennis balls safe for German Shepherds?

They can be used for supervised fetch if they are large enough and undamaged, but they are not ideal for dogs that chew their balls. The felt can abrade teeth, and a damaged or undersized ball can become a choking hazard.

Should a German Shepherd have a toy in the crate?

A stuffed KONG Extreme can provide supervised, food-based enrichment for some dogs. First confirm that your dog does not destroy or swallow rubber. Do not crate a dog with a toy that it shreds, and remove the toy if it becomes damaged.

Are antlers good chews for German Shepherds?

They are not a risk-free choice. Very hard chews such as antlers can fracture teeth and may splinter or break into swallowable pieces. A durable rubber chew is generally a more forgiving option, though it still requires inspection.

The Bottom Line

For most German Shepherds, build a small rotation rather than buying one supposedly indestructible toy: a KONG Extreme for stuffing and chewing, a West Paw Jive or Chuckit! Ultra Ball for fetch, and a Gnawt-a-Rock or KONG Wobbler for food enrichment. Add the Goughnuts Large Ring if chewing is the main challenge, and reserve the Goughnuts Large Tug for supervised interactive play. Size every toy to the individual dog and retire it as soon as it starts to fail.
