Teddy Bear Dog Breed Guide

“Teddy bear dog” is an informal label, not a breed, so the name alone cannot predict a dog’s adult size, coat, temperament, or health. Identify the actual breed or parent breeds and prepare for their grooming and care needs.

“Teddy bear dog” is not an official breed. It is a casual description for dogs with features such as a rounded face, large eyes, a short muzzle, a compact body, and a fluffy or plush-looking coat. The label can refer to several breeds, mixes, or a dog whose appearance comes mainly from grooming.

That distinction matters: the nickname does not tell you a dog’s adult size, shedding level, temperament, grooming needs, or inherited health risks. To choose one responsibly, identify the actual breed or parent breeds first.

What is a teddy bear dog?

The American Kennel Club (AKC) breed directory does not list “Teddy Bear” as a recognized breed. Recognized breeds have written standards covering structure, coat, size, and behavior; “teddy bear” has no such standard.

Breeders and sellers commonly use the term for:

  • Purebred companion dogs, including Bichon Frises, Havanese, Maltese, Shih Tzus, Pomeranians, Cotons de Tulear, and Toy or Miniature Poodles.
  • Crosses such as Shichons, also called Zuchons or Tzu Frises, which are usually Shih Tzu–Bichon Frise mixes.
  • Poodle crosses such as Maltipoos, Shih-Poos, and Cavapoos.
  • Dogs given a rounded “teddy bear” haircut, regardless of their breed.

A photo or sales description cannot establish what a dog will look like as an adult. Puppy coats change, facial proportions mature, and grooming can dramatically alter the apparent shape of the head and body.

Popular breeds sold as teddy bear dogs

These breeds often fit the teddy-bear look, but they are not interchangeable. Their size, coat, exercise needs, and health considerations differ. Size and lifespan figures below come from the AKC breed profiles linked in the table; the profiles do not provide a single lifespan figure for every listed breed.

Breed Adult size and lifespan Coat and grooming Points to investigate
Bichon Frise 9.5–11.5 inches; 12–18 pounds; about 14–15 years Brush at least two or three times weekly, preferably daily. Professional grooming is commonly needed every four to six weeks. Patella, hip, and ophthalmologist evaluations are recommended for breeding dogs. Dental, eye, allergy, bladder, and patella problems can occur.
Havanese Small and sturdy; the AKC profile excerpt does not give one weight range or lifespan. The long coat usually needs daily grooming unless clipped short. Check the ears and clean facial hair around the eyes regularly. The Havanese Club of America recommends eye, hearing, hip, and patella testing.
Maltese Under 7 pounds; approximately 7–9 inches The long coat needs daily brushing and combing down to the skin, plus bathing, nail, ear, and dental care. Ask about patella, cardiac, and serum bile-acid testing. Dental disease is a significant long-term concern.
Shih Tzu 8–11 inches; 9–16 pounds A full coat requires daily brushing. A puppy trim reduces the workload but does not remove the need for grooming. Its short-faced anatomy can contribute to breathing, heat-tolerance, eye, and anesthetic problems.
Pomeranian 6–7 inches; 3–7 pounds; about 12–16 years Brush the double coat through to the skin at least weekly. Many owners use professional grooming every four to six weeks. Very small puppies are vulnerable to hypoglycemia. Tracheal and other toy-breed problems should also be discussed.
Coton de Tulear About 9–11 inches; 8–13 pounds; about 15–19 years A full coat needs daily brushing. A puppy clip makes brushing easier but does not eliminate routine coat and ear care. Recommended evaluations include patella, hip, cardiac, and ophthalmologist examinations.
Toy Poodle No more than 10 inches; approximately 4–6 pounds; about 10–18 years The curly coat mats at the roots unless brushed thoroughly to the skin. Many owners arrange a short trim every four to six weeks. Ask about patella, hip, eye, and PRCD-PRA DNA testing.
Miniature Poodle A separate Poodle variety; see the AKC profile for its size description. Requires regular brushing and clipping; a longer coat generally needs daily brushing. Patella, hip, eye, and PRCD-PRA testing are among the recommended screens. Luxating patellas and Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease are concerns.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel 12–13 inches; 13–18 pounds; about 12–15 years The silky coat and round expression create a teddy-bear appearance, but the breed sheds and is not non-shedding. Use the Cavalier parent club’s health-testing recommendations. Do not advertise this breed as hypoallergenic.

Shichon versus “teddy bear dog”

A Shichon usually means a Shih Tzu–Bichon Frise cross. It is one of the dogs most often marketed as a teddy bear puppy, but it is not the same as every dog sold under that nickname.

Because a Shichon is a cross, puppies in the same litter may inherit different coat textures, shedding levels, facial shapes, sizes, and behavioral tendencies. Some may resemble the Shih Tzu parent more closely, while others look more like the Bichon. They can also inherit health conditions associated with either side of the cross.

The same uncertainty applies to Poodle mixes. A Maltipoo or Shih-Poo may shed less than some dogs, but it is not automatically non-shedding or hypoallergenic. If the parents are known, a buyer should assess both breeds rather than relying on the word “teddy bear.”

Are teddy bear dogs hypoallergenic?

No dog is completely hypoallergenic. Allergens are associated with dander, saliva, and other biological material—not simply with visible hair. A low-shedding coat may work better for some allergy sufferers, but individual reactions vary.

Poodle crosses are particularly prone to exaggerated “allergy-free” marketing. Their coat genetics are not predictable enough to guarantee a non-shedding adult. Anyone with allergies should spend time with the specific puppy and, where possible, its parents before making a commitment. The AKC also notes that no dog is completely hypoallergenic.

Grooming requirements

The plush appearance usually comes with a substantial maintenance bill and a regular time commitment. Long, silky coats such as those of Havanese, Maltese, and Shih Tzus can form mats close to the skin. Curly Poodle coats can mat at the roots even when the outer surface looks tidy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Brush in sections rather than quickly smoothing only the visible top layer. A comb or brush should reach the skin without scraping or pulling. If a coat is severely matted, trying to force a brush through it can hurt the dog; a professional groomer may need to clip the coat short.

A practical routine may include:

  • Daily brushing for a full Havanese, Maltese, Shih Tzu, Coton, or curly Poodle-type coat.
  • Brushing a Bichon at least two or three times each week, with daily brushing preferred.
  • At least weekly, thorough brushing for a Pomeranian, depending on the coat.
  • Professional grooming approximately every four to six weeks when the owner does not maintain the coat with a full home groom.
  • Regular nail trimming, bathing, ear checks, eye-area cleaning, and dental care for every dog, including dogs kept in a short clip.

A short “puppy cut” makes brushing easier, but it does not turn a teddy bear dog into a maintenance-free pet.

Temperament and family life

A round face does not guarantee a calm, cuddly, quiet, or child-friendly temperament. Behavior is influenced by inherited traits, early socialization, training, health, and the home environment.

Many small companion dogs form close attachments to their people. Some struggle when left alone and may bark, pace, destroy items, soil indoors, attempt to escape, or become frantic after departure. These can be signs of separation anxiety, not spite or “attention seeking.” A gradual alone-time plan and veterinary or qualified behavior support may be needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Children should always be supervised with a dog. Small dogs can be injured by being dropped or handled roughly, and a dog that resembles a stuffed toy is still an animal that needs space and respectful handling.

Health concerns to understand

Small-puppy hypoglycemia

Very young, very small puppies have limited energy reserves. Missing a meal, becoming cold, experiencing stress, or exercising heavily can contribute to low blood sugar. Warning signs include unusual sleepiness, weakness, poor coordination, collapse, or seizures.

Toy puppies—particularly those under 12 weeks—can be especially vulnerable, according to AKC guidance on puppy hypoglycemia. Follow your veterinarian’s feeding instructions, and treat weakness, collapse, or seizures as an emergency rather than attempting prolonged home treatment.

“Teacup,” “micro,” and “tiny toy” are marketing terms, not AKC-recognized size designations. Extreme smallness should not be treated as proof of quality or health. Ask for the adult weights of both parents and whether unusually small puppies are being intentionally produced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short-faced anatomy

Shih Tzus and some Shih Tzu mixes have brachycephalic, or short-faced, anatomy. Narrow nostrils and excess soft-palate tissue can contribute to noisy breathing, exercise intolerance, heat distress, eye injuries, gagging, and increased anesthetic risk.

Before buying or adopting a short-muzzled dog, ask whether it breathes noisily while resting, tires quickly, struggles in warm weather, or has needed airway treatment. A short muzzle should be considered a health and care factor, not just a desirable facial feature. See VCA’s overview of brachycephalic airway syndrome.

Dental disease

Small companion dogs often need deliberate dental care. The AVMA identifies periodontal disease as the most common dental condition in dogs and regular toothbrushing as the most effective home-care measure (AVMA pet dental-care brochure).

How to evaluate a teddy bear puppy breeder

Ask for the actual records for both parents. “Vet checked,” “healthy,” or “DNA tested” is not a complete health history. The appropriate screening depends on the breeds involved.

Parent breed Examples of recommended screening
Bichon Frise Patella, hip, and ophthalmologist evaluations
Havanese Eye, hearing, hip, and patella testing
Maltese Patella, cardiac, and serum bile-acid testing
Coton de Tulear Patella, hip, cardiac, and ophthalmologist evaluations
Toy or Miniature Poodle Patella, hip, eye, and relevant DNA testing, including PRCD-PRA where recommended

Where applicable, verify results through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals database. Screening lowers risk; it does not guarantee that a puppy will never become ill. The AKC explains that recommendations are breed-specific and that buyers can review breed health-testing requirements.

A responsible breeder should also let you see the puppy with its mother, explain socialization and veterinary care, provide vaccination and health records, use a written contract, and agree to take the dog back if you can no longer care for it. Puppies should generally go home no earlier than 8–12 weeks, depending on the puppy and the breeder’s plan.

Warning signs in teddy bear puppy advertising

  • “Teddy Bear” is listed as the only breed, with no named parents.
  • The seller guarantees “hypoallergenic,” “non-shedding,” an exact adult weight, or a fixed temperament.
  • “Teacup,” “micro,” or “tiny toy” is the main selling point.
  • You cannot see the puppy with its mother or speak with the seller by phone or video.
  • Parent health records are missing or cannot be independently verified.
  • The seller pressures you to pay immediately, ship the puppy at once, or use an untraceable payment method.
  • The health guarantee does not specify covered conditions, veterinary requirements, remedies, or return provisions.

Questions to ask before choosing one

  1. What are the puppy’s actual breeds and the registered names of both parents?
  2. What adult weights are the parents, grandparents, and previous puppies?
  3. Which breed-specific health tests have both parents completed, and can I verify the results?
  4. What coat types and shedding levels have previous litters produced?
  5. Has the puppy shown noisy breathing, poor exercise tolerance, eye problems, digestive problems, or episodes of weakness?
  6. What grooming routine will the adult dog need?
  7. How has the puppy been socialized, and what happens when it is left alone?
  8. What does the contract say about illness, return, and rehoming?

Is a teddy bear dog right for you?

Choose based on the actual dog, not the nickname. A teddy-bear-looking dog may be a good companion for someone prepared for frequent brushing, professional grooming, dental care, training, and close monitoring of a very small puppy. It may be a poor fit for someone seeking a guaranteed non-shedding, low-maintenance, quiet, or allergy-proof pet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the named breed or parent breeds, investigate their health risks, meet the dog in person, and budget for grooming and veterinary care. The cuteness is immediate; the care commitment lasts for the dog’s entire life.

FAQ

Is a teddy bear dog a real breed?

No. “Teddy bear dog” is an informal appearance or marketing label. It can describe several purebred dogs, mixed breeds such as the Shichon, or a dog with a rounded grooming style.

What breed is the teddy bear dog?

There is no single answer. Bichon Frises, Havanese, Maltese, Shih Tzus, Pomeranians, Cotons de Tulear, Poodles, Shih Tzu–Bichon mixes, and other dogs may be marketed this way.

Are teddy bear dogs hypoallergenic?

No dog is completely hypoallergenic. Some teddy-bear-type dogs may shed less, but allergy responses vary and Poodle-mix coat traits cannot be guaranteed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How big does a teddy bear dog get?

Adult size depends on the actual breed or parent breeds. The AKC breed profiles in the comparison table give size details for several popular examples; the nickname does not predict adult size.

Do teddy bear dogs require a lot of grooming?

Usually, yes. Long or curly coats can mat close to the skin and may need daily brushing. Many owners also use professional grooming every four to six weeks. Short clipping reduces brushing but does not remove routine care.

Are teddy bear dogs good with children?

Some are, but appearance does not predict temperament. Children must be supervised with every dog, and small dogs can be injured by rough handling.

What is a Shichon?

A Shichon, also called a Zuchon or Tzu Frise, is usually a Shih Tzu–Bichon Frise cross. It is commonly called a teddy bear dog, but it is not the definition of every teddy-bear-type dog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check before buying a teddy bear puppy?

Confirm the actual parent breeds, see the puppy with its mother, review veterinary and vaccination records, verify breed-specific health testing for both parents, inspect the contract, and avoid guarantees about exact size, coat, temperament, or allergies.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line: “Teddy bear dog” describes a look, not a breed. Before choosing one, find out which breed or cross you are actually considering, prepare for significant coat and dental care, and treat claims such as “teacup,” “hypoallergenic,” and “non-shedding guaranteed” with caution.
