For most low-tech freshwater aquariums, Anubias and Java fern are reliable epiphyte plants: they grow attached to rock or driftwood, tolerate low light, and do not need planted substrate. Bucephalandra is a strong choice for compact displays and varied leaf shapes, while mosses add fine-textured coverage. The right option depends on the space, look, and care pace you want—not a universal ranking.

What makes a plant an epiphyte in an aquarium?

In aquarium care, epiphyte plants are typically attached to hardscape such as driftwood or rock rather than planted in the substrate. Anubias, Java fern, and Bucephalandra are rhizome plants; their roots can grip the hardscape, but the rhizome itself should remain exposed. Aquarium Co-Op puts the substrate point simply: “The great thing about rhizome plants is that you don’t need any substrate to grow them.” Aquarium Co-Op’s rhizome-plant FAQ

Compare the best epiphyte aquarium plants

Plant Best suited to Light and growth Appearance and considerations
Anubias Low-light hardscape planting, from compact foreground or small-tank forms to larger midground plants Low light; slow growing Broad, sturdy leaves. Excessive light or nutrient imbalance can leave slow-growing leaves vulnerable to algae.
Java fern Low-light tanks where a fern-like shape is wanted; it can also remain in a pot Low light; medium growth in the Buce Plant guide Fern-like leaves; forms vary in size. Some types make plantlets on mature leaves.
Bucephalandra Nano aquariums and foreground or middle hardscape Low to medium light; very slow growing; generally does not need CO₂ Varied leaf shapes and colors. Creeping forms are around 5–10 cm tall and upright forms around 18–25 cm, according to Aquarium Co-Op; algae can be an issue on leaves.
Mosses Fine-textured coverage on rock or wood Comparative light and growth details vary; keep the layer thin for attachment Soft, fine texture. Available guidance does not establish one moss as universally best.

These are care-guide-based comparisons, not results of a controlled test across aquariums. Form and cultivar affect mature size and appearance, so check the specific plant offered by a seller.

Which plant should you choose?

Choose Anubias for a dependable, broad-leaved accent

Anubias is a practical starting point for low-light setups. Most types are described as adaptable to soft or hard water, and CO₂ injection or fertilizer is usually not required. Compact forms such as Nana Petite can fit smaller displays; larger forms are better suited to midground placement. Because growth is slow, avoid excessive light that can encourage visible algae on the leaves. Buce Plant’s planting guide

Choose Java fern for a fern-like shape and propagation options

Java fern is another undemanding low-light choice. Its different forms make it worth checking the plant’s eventual size against the space available. Some types produce small plantlets on mature leaves, and the rhizome can be divided to propagate the plant. Keep it attached to hardscape or in its pot rather than burying the rhizome.

Choose Bucephalandra for compact variety, with patience

Bucephalandra offers variation in leaf shape and coloration, including compact creeping forms suited to small aquariums. It tolerates low to medium light and generally does not require CO₂, but it grows very slowly; moderate light and some shade help keep algae from taking over the leaves. Stable conditions are preferable. After a change in growing conditions, it may lose leaves while adjusting; a firm, healthy rhizome can still produce new growth. Amazon Sword - Echinodorus Bleheri x3 Plants - Live Aquarium Plant
  • Echinodorus bleheri from South America is undemanding and beautiful, and becomes 20-50 cm tall.
  • A nutritious bottom promotes growth, but the plant needs pruning to prevent it depriving plants underneath of light.
  • Echinodorus bleheri does well even in poorly illuminated aquariums, as it grows towards the light. It is a hardy and easy solitary plant for both beginners and the more experienced with quite large aquariums. It has been sold under the name "Paniculatus".

Choose moss for fine texture and surface cover

Moss can soften the look of wood or rock and spread over a hardscape surface. The guidance available here does not provide a like-for-like comparison among moss species, so choose based on the form and coverage you want rather than assuming one is best in all tanks.

How to attach epiphyte plants to rock or driftwood

  1. Pick a suitable spot. Choose a crevice in rock or an area of driftwood where the roots can rest against the surface.
  2. Position the plant with the rhizome exposed. Do not bury or coat the rhizome. Arrange roots against the hardscape.
  3. Secure it gently. Wedge it into a crevice, tie it in place with thread or line, or use a small amount of cyanoacrylate gel on the roots. For moss, use a thin layer so it can adhere.
  4. Allow time for attachment. As the roots grow, they can grip the hardscape. If tied, keep the attachment secure without covering or constricting the rhizome.

Thread, line, and wedging offer alternatives to glue. If using gel glue, use a small amount on the roots rather than coating the rhizome. Aquarium Co-Op’s planting FAQ

Common problems to watch for

  • Buried rhizome: Keep it uncovered when attaching Anubias, Java fern, or Bucephalandra.
  • Algae on slow-growing leaves: Anubias and Bucephalandra grow slowly, so algae can become conspicuous. Avoid excessive light; Bucephalandra generally does better with moderate lighting or shade.
  • Bucephalandra dropping leaves after a move: A transition can cause leaf loss. A firm, healthy rhizome may still produce adapted new growth.
  • Plant too large for its position: Check the form and mature habit before placing it. Bucephalandra includes both creeping and upright forms, and Anubias and Java fern also vary in size.
