Pelagic jellyfish generally need a specialist kreisel or suitable pseudo-kreisel that keeps them suspended in slow, circular flow; a conventional rectangular fish tank is not a safe default. Water conditions, food, temperature, and equipment are species- and system-specific, so there is no universal jellyfish care recipe.
Can you keep jellyfish in a regular fish tank?
For many pelagic jellyfish, a standard rectangular aquarium is unsuitable. Its corners can trap animals, and contact with hard surfaces can injure their delicate bodies. The goal is to keep the jelly suspended in a steady, gentle current without forcing it against walls or into corners.

Choose a kreisel-style system for pelagic species
A kreisel creates a continuous, circular, slow-moving current in a cylindrical or rounded chamber. A 2023 review of invertebrate welfare describes that kind of flow as necessary for pelagic jellies to thrive. Orange Coast College’s aquarium likewise explains that its kreisel keeps fragile organisms suspended and that jellies can get caught in rectangular tank corners.
Use a specialist jellyfish kreisel or a system specifically designed and validated for the species you plan to keep. A generic round bowl or improvised aquarium is not established as an equivalent. The available evidence does not set a universal tank volume, pump rating, or flow velocity for home aquariums.

Do not assume all jellyfish need the same setup
Jellyfish are not interchangeable aquarium animals. Pelagic moon jellies and Cassiopea, often called upside-down jellyfish, have different natural histories: Cassiopea is benthic and hosts photosynthetic dinoflagellates that provide supplemental nourishment. That difference is a reason to research the precise species, not proof that Cassiopea can be kept in any ordinary tank.
What water conditions and temperature do jellyfish need?
Get water-parameter guidance for the exact species and source stock before setting up the aquarium. Do not treat a temperature or salinity reported for one exhibit or laboratory culture as a general target for jellyfish.

Use exhibit figures only as an example
Orange Coast College reports that its Open Ocean/Jelly Kreisel exhibit is part of a recirculating temperate system operating at approximately 17 °C (63 °F), 35 ppt salinity, and pH near 8.1. That system also has extensive filtration, airlines, and main and emergency chillers. These are the conditions and equipment of that particular exhibit, not a prescription for other species or home systems.

Follow a reliable, species-specific husbandry source for temperature and marine-water targets, and make sure the planned system can maintain them consistently. The available sources do not establish universal beginner targets for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, alkalinity, or aquarium volume. Do not fill those gaps by copying an unrelated setup or guessing.

What do jellyfish eat, and how often should you feed them?
Diet and feeding frequency depend on both species and life stage. Use the food guidance from a knowledgeable supplier or a species-specific husbandry source, and manage uneaten food and resulting waste according to the system’s design.
Why one feeding protocol does not apply to every jelly
A 2020 laboratory culture protocol for the hydrozoan Clytia hemisphaerica used Artemia salina nauplii for both polyp and medusa stages. In that culture, nauplii were hatched for at least 24 hours at 25–30 °C, rinsed, and delivered by pipette; feeding occurred once or twice a day depending on stage and setup. Those details describe a controlled culture protocol for that species, not a universal menu or schedule for aquarium jellyfish.

Does a jellyfish aquarium need a chiller?
Not necessarily. Chiller requirements depend on the species, the target temperature, and the room and aquarium conditions. Orange Coast College documents chillers in its particular temperate exhibit, while the Clytia hemisphaerica laboratory protocol describes a controlled system with a chiller/heater. These examples show that temperature control can be part of a system; they do not establish that every jellyfish keeper needs a chiller or specify a universal setting.

What should you confirm before getting jellyfish?
- Identity and life stage: Confirm the exact species and whether the animal is a polyp, ephyra, or medusa, since care can vary across species and stages.
- System suitability: Check that the tank’s geometry and flow are designed for that species, especially if it is pelagic.
- Care parameters: Obtain species-specific temperature, salinity, feeding, and water-quality guidance from a reliable source familiar with the stock.
- Equipment and upkeep: Confirm how the system maintains water quality and temperature, and how to handle uneaten food and routine maintenance.
- Source: Ask the supplier about the animal’s identity, life stage, and established care requirements before purchase.
Is captive-breeding research a care instruction?
No. A 2018 study of moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) production found that, in its tested breeding approach, a cooling period around 10 °C together with soluble iodine enhanced strobilation—the process that produces ephyrae. The study also found that polyps reattached preferentially to plastics rather than natural materials, while growth was similar across the tested substrates.
These are findings about managed moon-jelly breeding, not routine aquarium treatment. They are not a reason to dose iodine or lower a display tank’s temperature. The study describes captive production in a conservation context; it does not provide a general home-care protocol.
