For a typical 30-US-gallon aquarium, the Fluval AC30 and Fluval C2 are two HOB filters rated for that tank size. Choose between them based on their flow and media design, not on an unverified claim that one is universally better. The AquaClear 30 is another size-rated HOB option; the internal Fluval U2 suits tanks where an external filter cannot be fitted. The larger Fluval AC50 offers capacity headroom, but its stronger stated flow may not suit every setup.
These are manufacturer-specification comparisons, not hands-on rankings. Tank inhabitants, layout, desired current and maintenance preferences all matter, and a flow rating alone does not prove how well a filter will perform in a particular aquarium.
Which filter should you choose for a 30-gallon aquarium?
Start with a model whose stated tank capacity includes 30 US gallons, then consider its flow control, media arrangement and installation style. The table compares the manufacturer specifications available for five options; it does not establish differences in noise, durability or long-term water quality.
| Model | Type and stated capacity | Stated flow and power | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fluval AC30 | Hang-on-back (HOB); 10–30 US gal | Maximum 150 US GPH; 7 W at 120 V/60 Hz | Adjustable flow; the AC Series listing includes foam, carbon, BIOMAX and an intake sponge. |
| Fluval C2 | HOB; up to 30 US gal | 119 US GPH and 5 W at 120 V/60 Hz | Five-stage design with refiltration intended to increase media contact time when output is reduced. |
| Fluval AquaClear 30 | HOB; 10–30 US gal | Not stated on the inspected manufacturer product page | Adjustable flow and customizable mechanical, chemical and biological filtration. |
| Fluval AC50 | HOB; 20–50 US gal | Maximum 200 US GPH; 7 W at 120 V/60 Hz | A higher-capacity option for extra headroom; consider whether the flow suits the animals. |
| Fluval U2 | Internal; up to 30 US gal | 105 US GPH and 5 W at 120 V/60 Hz | Three-way flow control; installs inside the aquarium rather than hanging on the back. |
Flow and tank rating are different specifications. A filter’s stated capacity indicates the aquarium size the manufacturer associates with the model; its GPH figure describes a flow rate. Neither number, on its own, establishes biological performance in a specific tank. There is no verified universal turnover target for every 30-gallon aquarium.

How to choose among the size-rated HOB filters
Fluval AC30: adjustable flow and listed media
The AC30 is rated for 10–30 US gallons, with a manufacturer-stated maximum flow of 150 US GPH. The Fluval AC Series listing identifies foam, carbon, BIOMAX and an intake sponge as included media, and describes flow control. It is a straightforward candidate when you want a HOB filter rated for a 30-gallon tank and value the listed media arrangement.
Fluval C2: five-stage filtration and refiltration
The C2 is rated up to 30 US gallons and is specified at 119 US GPH and 5 W at 120 V/60 Hz. Fluval describes five stages of mechanical, chemical and biological filtration, plus a refiltration system designed to slow output and increase water contact with media when flow is reduced. Its lower stated flow than the AC30 is not proof of better or worse filtration; it is one factor to weigh alongside media access and the current your aquarium needs.

- COMPATIBILITY: Use with Marineland Rite-Size Filter Cartridges (see individual filter for sizing recommendations).
- FIVE SIZES: Available in 75 GPH, 100 GPH, 150 GPH, 200 GPH and 350 GPH sizes.
Fluval AquaClear 30: customizable media
The AquaClear 30 is rated for 10–30 US gallons. Its manufacturer page describes adjustable flow and customizable mechanical, chemical and biological filtration, but does not state a GPH figure in the inspected product information. Choose it if media customization matters more to you than comparing a published flow number; do not infer a flow rate from its tank rating.
When a larger or internal filter makes more sense
Fluval AC50: capacity headroom, not an automatic upgrade
The AC50 is rated for 20–50 US gallons and lists a maximum flow of 200 US GPH at 7 W and 120 V/60 Hz. It may appeal if you want a model with a higher stated capacity than the tank, but more flow is not automatically preferable. Consider whether the inhabitants tolerate the resulting water movement and whether the layout offers calmer areas.

- QUIET AQUARIUM FILTER: The Tetra Whisper IQ Power Filter with Stay Clean technology contains a sound shield for quiet filtration less than 40 dB.
- SELF PRIMING: Submerged motor starts up with no priming required.
- CAPACITY: The Tetra Whisper IQ 45 Power Filter works in tanks up to 45 gallons (215 GPH).
- STAY CLEAN TECHNOLOGY: By maintaining healthy pH levels, creates easier maintenance for healthier fish.
- CARTRIDGE REFILLS: Change cartridges monthly; uses large-sized Tetra Whisper Bio-Bag Filter Cartridges (refills sold separately).
Fluval U2: filtration inside the tank
The U2 is an internal filter rated up to 30 US gallons, with a stated flow of 105 US GPH at 120 V/60 Hz and 5 W. Fluval’s Canada page describes adjustable three-way flow and positions it for situations where external filtration is unavailable. Unlike HOB models, it occupies space inside the aquarium; check the product’s installation requirements and region-specific availability before choosing it.
What filter media do—and what they do not do
Filter media serve different purposes, so “more stages” or “more flow” should not be treated as a substitute for understanding what is in the filter:

- POWER FILTER: Advanced 3-step filtration
- VARIETY OF SIZES: For aquariums 5-15 gallons, 10-20 gallons, 20-40 gallons, 30-60 gallons
- INCLUDED: One AQUA-Tech EZ-Change #3 Filter Cartridge
- FAST, CLEAN & EASY: Traps dirt, removes impurities and offers maximum water to carbon contact
- WARRANTY: Limited 3-year
- Mechanical media capture insoluble particles from the water.
- Biological media provide surfaces for bacteria that process ammonia and nitrite.
- Chemical media adsorb dissolved substances. Whether to use a particular chemical medium depends on the aquarium’s needs; the product comparisons do not establish that every tank needs it continuously.
Filtration does not replace routine water changes. Seachem states in Basics of Filtration: “No system exists, despite irresponsible or misinformed claims to the contrary, that can replace water changes.”

Tank volume is only a starting point. Before settling on a model, account for the setup you actually have:
Best Value
- Aquarium filtration system that offers superior contact time with filter media and energy efficient pump lowers operating costs
- Quick and easy installation; we recommend that you clean aquarium filter every 2 weeks for maximum operation and efficiency
- Provides optimal mechanical; chemical; and biological filtration
- Comes equipped with AquaClear Foam; Activated Carbon Filter and BioMax and Cycle Guard for superior water quality
- Filtration volume is up to 7 times larger than comparable fish tank filters
- Animals and current: Match the adjustable flow or outlet arrangement to the fish and invertebrates you keep. A maximum GPH figure does not establish that the current will be suitable for every species.
- Tank clearance: A HOB filter needs a compatible place to hang on the tank; an internal filter takes up space inside it. Compare the installation type with your lid, rim and layout.
- Media access: Consider how easily you can inspect and clean the filter and obtain media compatible with the exact model. The listed media and stages differ across the options above.
- Maintenance routine: Plan to maintain the filter and aquarium rather than relying on filtration alone. The available manufacturer specifications do not establish a maintenance interval for a particular bioload.
Manufacturer flow and power figures above are model specifications, not independent measurements of actual flow after media loading. Specifications and availability may vary by region and change over time. No independently verified comparison establishes which of these models is quieter, more durable or produces better long-term water quality.
