A 2014 estimate put annual losses at 365 million to 988 million; later estimates are higher because researchers accounted for birds that disappear after striking glass or die after leaving the impact site. The newer figures are still estimates, not a direct national count.
How many birds die from window strikes each year?
The answer depends on what researchers count and how they estimate deaths. In 2014, Loss and colleagues estimated that building collisions killed 365 million to 988 million birds annually in the United States. The broad range reflected uncertainty in the data and differences among building types. The 2014 study remains a useful baseline, but it is not the last word.
A later estimate, summarized by the American Bird Conservancy (ABC) in 2025, puts the minimum annual U.S. toll at 1.28 billion to 3.46 billion. The same summary reports a possible range of 1.92 billion to 5.19 billion under broader assumptions. Those higher figures account for deaths that carcass searches can miss, including birds that leave the strike site or die after appearing to recover. The broader range depends on alternative assumptions, so it should not be treated as a firm count. ABC’s explanation of birds and glass summarizes the newer estimates.
The U.S. Geological Survey’s Bird Banding Laboratory described the toll as “up to two billion” birds a year on a page dated December 12, 2024. That is a rounded agency summary, not a replacement for the newer study’s ranges and assumptions. USGS Bird Window Collisions

- Designed to be applied to exterior glass surfaces. Before application, ensure that your surface is thoroughly clean and free of any overlay, tinting, film, coating or other impurities.
- WindowAlert is the trusted source for prevention of bird window strikes and window collisions. WindowAlert first developed and pioneered ultraviolet window decals in Bend, Oregon in 2003. Decals are made in the USA.
These figures should not be averaged or read as proof that actual deaths rose by a specific amount. They come from different methods and assumptions; the higher estimates indicate that earlier accounting likely missed mortality.
Why do birds fly into windows?
Glass can look like open air to a bird. A pane may reflect sky, trees, or other habitat, or it may be transparent enough for a bird to see plants or a route through the space beyond it. In either case, the bird may try to fly toward what appears to be a clear path. ABC explains these collision mechanisms in its guide to glass collisions.

Not every impact leaves a body beneath the window. Some birds fly or move away after a collision, and some die later. That makes the toll difficult to measure: a search for carcasses can miss birds that are removed, carried away, or no longer at the site. The newer estimates attempt to account for some of that missing mortality, but the nationwide total remains uncertain.
Are window strikes mostly a skyscraper problem?
No. Homes and other low-rise buildings matter, alongside offices, schools, and taller buildings. Dramatic reports from downtown towers can make collisions seem like an urban high-rise issue, but birds can strike residential windows wherever glass reflects habitat or offers a misleading view through a pane. ABC’s overview of why birds hit glass describes the problem across building types.

- Bird Window Strike Prevention: Bird strike window decals to alert birds, and stop birds from attacking windows. So it can protect wild birds from glass collisions. It can be applied to home and office windows, and glass doors
- Rainbow Window Film: The package includes 36 window stickers. These prism-design decals not only can be used as a bird deterrent but also act as a great home decor. They can reflect sunlight and create a beautiful rainbow to your room
- Sun Catcher Sticker: Capture the sun rays and turn them into bright rainbows throughout the room.
- Reusable, Repositionable, Cleanable: You can remove them if you need to wash your window, and reinstall them after washing. These clings can be cleaned with water too
- No Glue, No Mess: These decals are static clings. Tear off the window decals along the dotted line, spray some water on the glass surface, and stick the smooth side of the clings to the glass
Migration can bring more birds through an area at certain times, increasing the number exposed to hazards along their route. But collisions are not limited to migration seasons or city centers; a window at home can pose a risk throughout the year.
Do window decals work?
Markers can help when they create a consistent, visible pattern across the glass. A few widely spaced decals may leave large clear areas that still look flyable to birds. Placement matters too: the cited homeowner and agency guidance calls for treatments on the exterior surface, where they can interrupt reflections.

- A collection of 87 strip window decals in 3 sheets, made of thick and colorful prism vinyl that is of high quality. The strip decals measure about 0.4 inch by 7.9 inches. You can use these strips to form any shape you like.
- SAVE YOUR BIRDS: These anti collision decals can help birds notice the glass, stop birds from hitting windows and glass doors, and save your beautiful feathered friends. RAINBOW MAKER: Also a pretty way to add a delightful touch to your home decor. They cast rainbows throughout your room when the sun shines through them.
- NO GLUE, NO MESS, REUSABLE, REMOVABLE, REPOSITIONABLE: They adhere with static cling without leaving any sticky residue behind.
- WON'T BLOCK YOUR SIGHT: These window clings are somewhat clear and in small size, so they don't distract from your view and become an eye-sore.
- EASY TO PUT UP AND REMOVE: Just wet your glass, peel and stick to glass. You can take them off and move them as much as you like! Before installation, make sure your surface is clean and free of any tinting, film, coating and other ornaments.
Cornell Lab of Ornithology recommends exterior screens or treatments that break up reflections, with markers spaced uniformly two inches apart across the glass; it also cites Acopian BirdSavers spaced four inches apart. Cornell’s homeowner guidance specifies these approaches. USGS recommends exterior window patterns in a two-by-two-inch grid. USGS guidance likewise emphasizes close spacing and exterior placement. Follow spacing appropriate to the specific treatment rather than assuming every product uses the same pattern.

- Identify the glass that needs attention. Look for windows where you have seen strikes or where reflections of trees, sky, or garden habitat are prominent. Consider large panes and glass that appears transparent from outside.
- Choose a treatment suited to the window. Options include exterior film, tape or markers, screens, cord systems such as Acopian BirdSavers, and bird-friendly glazing designed for new construction or replacement. These options differ in installation and use; the sources cited here do not establish a head-to-head performance ranking.
- Apply the pattern on the exterior and cover the pane consistently. Use the treatment’s recommended spacing. Cornell’s guidance describes markers two inches apart across the full glass surface or Acopian BirdSavers four inches apart; USGS recommends a two-by-two-inch exterior grid. Avoid relying on a handful of isolated decals.
- For new construction or replacement glass, check the evidence. ABC’s glass testing and research program evaluates glazing and prevention approaches. Its resources can help building owners and designers distinguish evaluated options from unsupported claims.
- Check that the treatment remains in place. Inspect it periodically so that missing, peeling, or displaced elements do not leave untreated stretches of glass.
A product category such as exterior bird-deterrent film or patterned markers can be a starting point when shopping, but a category name alone does not establish that a particular item has the cited spacing, exterior placement, or independent testing. Check the installation instructions and evidence for the specific product.

What the estimates can—and cannot—tell us
There is no national census of every bird-window collision. Estimates depend on observations and assumptions about how many collisions go unrecorded, how often carcasses disappear, and what happens to birds that leave the scene. The distinction matters: a precise-looking number can still represent a modeled estimate with substantial uncertainty.
The best-supported takeaway is that building glass kills far more birds than carcass searches alone reveal, and that the impact is not confined to skyscrapers. The exact annual U.S. total remains uncertain, which is why the older and newer estimates should be reported with their dates, ranges, and methods rather than collapsed into one definitive number.
