The best flea pill depends on the job. Nitenpyram tablets (including Capstar and a generic FDA-approved in 2026) are labeled to kill adult fleas already on a cat and can start working within a few hours. They are not a month-long preventive. For recurring monthly treatment and prevention, the labeled oral options covered here are Comfortis (spinosad) and Credelio CAT (lotilaner), each with different minimum ages, weights, administration directions and parasite claims. No independent head-to-head study establishes one product as universally best or proves which works fastest in every cat.
Use the exact product label for your cat’s measured weight, and ask a veterinarian before treating a weak, old, sick, medicated, pregnant, nursing or previously sensitive cat. Labels and approved uses can change; the details below reflect U.S. FDA materials reviewed October 13, 2026.

First decide whether you need immediate flea treatment or monthly prevention
“Flea pill” is not one standardized category. Oral products perform different jobs, so choosing by a speed claim alone can lead to the wrong duration, age range or dose.
Immediate adult-flea treatment: nitenpyram
Nitenpyram tablets are labeled for treatment of adult fleas on cats. FDA describes the ingredient as interfering with the flea nervous system, causing paralysis and death within a few hours. The 2026 FDA announcement covering a generic product says cats and kittens must weigh at least 2 pounds and be at least 4 weeks old. It lists 11.4 mg and 57 mg tablet strengths and says dosing is weight-based. Do not treat those tablets as monthly prevention, and do not select a strength by guessing or by borrowing a dose from another cat.

Monthly treatment and prevention: Comfortis or Credelio CAT
Comfortis is a flavored chewable tablet for monthly flea treatment and prevention in cats and kittens at least 14 weeks old and 4.1 pounds. Its label directs administration with food for maximum effectiveness.
Credelio CAT is listed by FDA for monthly treatment and prevention of flea infestations in cats and kittens at least 8 weeks old and 2.0 pounds. The same product has a separate indication for treatment and control of black-legged ticks for one month, but that tick indication requires a minimum age of 6 months while retaining the 2-pound minimum.
| Option | Primary job | Minimum age | Minimum weight | Administration or coverage notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nitenpyram tablets (Capstar and 2026 FDA-approved generic) | Adult-flea treatment | 4 weeks | 2 pounds | Weight-based dosing; 11.4 mg and 57 mg tablet strengths are identified by FDA. Not a month-long preventive. |
| Comfortis (spinosad) | Monthly flea treatment and prevention | 14 weeks | 4.1 pounds | Flavored chewable; give with food for maximum effectiveness. |
| Credelio CAT (lotilaner) | Monthly flea treatment and prevention | 8 weeks for fleas | 2.0 pounds | Separate black-legged tick treatment and control indication begins at 6 months and 2 pounds. |
These thresholds apply to the specific U.S. labels cited by FDA. A different package, formulation or future label may have different directions, so verify the current label before each course of treatment.

The available evidence does not support a direct winner. Nitenpyram is described by FDA as killing adult fleas within a few hours, but “within a few hours” is a regulatory product description rather than a guarantee that every cat will be flea-free on the same schedule.
The Comfortis cat label reports a laboratory result: the product started killing fleas within 30 minutes and killed 100% of the fleas within 24 hours in that study. That result is not an independent comparison with nitenpyram, and it cannot predict an identical response for every individual cat.

Because the products have different purposes and the cited evidence uses different descriptions and test conditions, choose based on whether you need a short-term adult-flea treatment or a labeled monthly regimen. Do not convert a laboratory time point into a promise about speed in your household.
Compare the products on the factors that change the decision
1. The job you need done
- Choose the nitenpyram category when the immediate objective is killing adult fleas currently on the cat and the cat meets the 4-week, 2-pound minimums.
- Choose a monthly product category when you need a recurring flea-treatment and prevention schedule and the cat meets that product’s age and weight requirements.
- If tick coverage is part of the decision, Credelio CAT’s labeled black-legged tick indication has its own 6-month age threshold. Flea eligibility at 8 weeks does not automatically confer tick eligibility.
2. Eligibility by measured weight and age
Age and weight cutoffs are not interchangeable. A kitten that qualifies for nitenpyram may still be too young or too light for Comfortis. A cat that qualifies for Credelio CAT for fleas may not yet meet its tick-indication age. Weigh the cat rather than estimating from a previous visit, particularly when the cat is close to a cutoff.

3. Administration
Comfortis specifically directs giving the chewable with food for maximum effectiveness. Nitenpyram dosing is weight-based, and the FDA generic announcement identifies two tablet strengths; follow the current package directions rather than splitting, combining or extrapolating tablets on your own. Credelio CAT also requires use according to its current label.
4. Additional parasite claims
Nitenpyram’s ordinary label discussed here concerns adult fleas. Comfortis and Credelio CAT are described as monthly flea treatment and prevention products. Credelio CAT additionally has the black-legged tick indication described above. Additional coverage never removes the need to check that the cat meets the age and weight threshold for that particular indication.
5. Health, medications and prior reactions
FDA advises discussing treatment with a veterinarian before use in a weak, old, medicated, sick, pregnant, nursing or previously sensitive pet. Tell the veterinarian about every other product the cat receives, including over-the-counter products. A product that is labeled for cats can still be a poor fit for an individual cat’s medical history or medication list.

6. Strength of the evidence
The evidence available here consists of FDA approvals, consumer guidance, product labeling and post-approval safety-label information. It does not include an independent, head-to-head trial ranking nitenpyram, Comfortis and Credelio CAT. Treat label results as product-specific evidence, not as a universal league table.
Nitenpyram tablets: what the fast adult-flea option can and cannot do
Nitenpyram acts on flea nervous systems. FDA’s 2026 announcement identifies a generic tablet as bioequivalent to Capstar, meaning the generic met the regulator’s bioequivalence standard to that reference product. The announcement lists over-the-counter 11.4 mg and 57 mg tablets and states that dose depends on the cat’s weight. Cats and kittens must be at least 4 weeks old and 2 pounds.
The practical implication is a narrow but useful one: nitenpyram is the labeled oral choice in this comparison for adult fleas on the cat now, including in a kitten old and heavy enough to qualify. The evidence provided does not establish a month-long duration for nitenpyram, so do not describe one tablet as monthly protection.
How to use the label safely
- Confirm that the product is labeled for cats, then record the cat’s current weight and age.
- Match that weight to the exact tablet strength and directions on the current package.
- Do not extrapolate from a dog product, another cat’s dose or an outdated label.
- Ask a veterinarian first if the cat is weak, old, ill, medicated, pregnant, nursing or has reacted to flea products before.
- Observe the cat after treatment and contact a veterinarian if an adverse event occurs.
Comfortis: a monthly flea option with a food requirement
The FDA-hosted Comfortis cat leaflet describes a flavored chewable tablet for monthly flea treatment and prevention. Eligibility begins at 14 weeks of age and 4.1 pounds. The label directs giving it with food for maximum effectiveness, so administration is part of using the product as studied and labeled.
The label reports that, in a laboratory study, Comfortis started killing fleas within 30 minutes and killed 100% of the fleas within 24 hours. Those are the label’s laboratory findings, not an independent comparison against nitenpyram or a guarantee for a particular cat.

Discuss all other medications with the veterinarian, including nonprescription products. FDA recorded a June 27, 2024 safety-label change that added post-approval experience information. FDA also notes that packages in the marketplace can lag behind approved label changes, which is why checking the current labeling matters.
Credelio CAT: monthly fleas, with a separate tick-age rule
FDA’s safety-label information lists Credelio CAT (lotilaner) for monthly treatment and prevention of flea infestations in cats and kittens at least 8 weeks old and 2.0 pounds. It also lists treatment and control of black-legged tick infestations for one month beginning at 6 months old and 2 pounds.
Read those as two distinct eligibility rules. An 8-week-old, 2-pound kitten may meet the listed flea threshold but not the tick threshold. The FDA page reports post-approval events but cautions that such reports cannot reliably establish how often an event occurs or prove that the product caused it. Review the current product label and the cat’s medical history with a veterinarian.

Credelio CAT contains lotilaner, an isoxazoline. FDA says most cats and dogs have not experienced neurologic adverse reactions to isoxazoline products, but seizures may occur even in animals with no previous seizure history. This is a warning to discuss risk and monitoring with a veterinarian, not a claim that every cat will have a neurologic reaction.

A practical decision path
Pick immediate adult-flea treatment when all of these are true
- You want an oral product labeled to kill adult fleas already on the cat.
- The cat is at least 4 weeks old and weighs at least 2 pounds.
- You can follow the weight-based directions for the exact nitenpyram strength.
- You understand that the cited label does not establish monthly prevention.
Pick a monthly flea regimen when all of these are true
- You need a product labeled for monthly flea treatment and prevention.
- The cat meets the product-specific threshold: 14 weeks and 4.1 pounds for Comfortis, or 8 weeks and 2.0 pounds for Credelio CAT.
- You can follow the administration direction, including giving Comfortis with food.
- Your veterinarian has considered illness, pregnancy or nursing, prior reactions and all concurrent medicines.
Consider Credelio CAT’s tick indication only when its separate criteria are met
If black-legged tick treatment and control is relevant, the cat must meet the listed 6-month and 2-pound threshold for that indication. Do not infer tick coverage from flea eligibility alone.
What to do for kittens too young for a labeled flea product
FDA advises using a flea comb to remove fleas and eggs while observing each product’s minimum age. This is especially relevant when a kitten is younger than 4 weeks or below the 2-pound minimum for nitenpyram, or otherwise below the threshold for a monthly product. Use the comb carefully and seek veterinary guidance for a very young, weak or heavily infested kitten rather than improvising with a product labeled for another species or age.
Safe-use checklist before giving any oral flea product
- Identify the purpose. Decide whether you need adult-flea treatment now or monthly treatment and prevention.
- Verify species and label. Use a product labeled for cats. Never transfer a dog product or dog dose to a cat.
- Measure weight. Use the cat’s current measured weight, especially near a minimum or dose boundary.
- Check age and indication. Confirm the exact minimum for the flea claim and, if relevant, the separate minimum for tick coverage.
- Review health status. Ask a veterinarian before use in a weak, old, sick, medicated, pregnant, nursing or previously sensitive cat.
- List every other product. Include prescription medicines, supplements and over-the-counter flea products when speaking with the veterinarian.
- Follow administration directions. Give Comfortis with food and use the nitenpyram strength and weight-based directions on the current label.
- Monitor afterward. If an adverse event occurs, contact a veterinarian and retain the package so the active ingredient and lot information are available.
Keep ordinary flea treatment separate from New World screwworm emergency use
In September 2026, FDA announced emergency-use authorizations involving Capstar and generic nitenpyram for New World screwworm in specified circumstances. That action is separate from the ordinary flea-treatment use discussed in this guide. FDA states that most U.S. dogs and cats are currently at low exposure risk because confirmed cases are limited to a specific geographic region, and it directs owners who suspect screwworm infestation to seek immediate veterinary care. Do not present the emergency authorization as expanded routine flea prevention.

The FDA materials used for these comparisons were reviewed October 13, 2026. FDA warns that updated labeling can take time to reach packages in the marketplace. Before buying or administering a product, compare the package information with the current FDA-hosted label or ask a veterinarian to confirm the active ingredient, indication, minimum age, minimum weight and administration instructions. If a package conflicts with a newer approved label, pause and get professional clarification rather than guessing.
Bottom line for choosing among the labeled options
For adult fleas on a qualifying cat right now, nitenpyram is the specifically labeled short-term oral treatment in this comparison; FDA describes activity within a few hours, with weight-based dosing and 4-week, 2-pound minimums. For monthly flea treatment and prevention, use the product whose age, weight, food instruction, parasite indication and safety profile fit the cat: Comfortis starts at 14 weeks and 4.1 pounds, while Credelio CAT starts at 8 weeks and 2.0 pounds for fleas and has a separate 6-month threshold for black-legged ticks. A veterinarian should make the final choice when the cat is medically fragile, takes other products, is pregnant or nursing, or has a history of sensitivity or seizures.
