Best Food for Dachshunds With Sensitive Stomachs: What to Look For

The best food depends on why a Dachshund has digestive symptoms. Learn what to discuss with your veterinarian, how an elimination trial works, and when signs need care.

There is no single best food for every Dachshund with a “sensitive stomach.” Vomiting, diarrhea, gas, loose stool, or reduced appetite are symptoms—not a diagnosis—and food is only one possible cause. A veterinarian can help identify whether your dog needs a highly digestible, lower-fat, higher-fiber, energy-dense, or allergy-trial diet.

What should I feed my Dachshund with an upset stomach?

Start with the cause, not a breed-specific product claim. Veterinary therapeutic gastrointestinal diets differ in digestibility, fat, fiber, and calorie density; the appropriate option depends on the suspected condition. There is no evidence here that Dachshunds need a distinct food solely because of breed.

If your Dachshund has recurring digestive signs, share a detailed food and health history with your veterinary team before switching foods. Symptoms can have causes other than diet, and a veterinarian can assess whether a food change is appropriate.

Which food features matter?

Ask your veterinarian which nutritional feature fits your dog’s suspected need. These options are not interchangeable, and no one feature is right for every dog.

Diet feature Why it may be considered
High digestibility A greater proportion of nutrients can be digested and absorbed. (VCA: Nutrition for Dogs and Cats with Gastrointestinal Upset)
Lower fat May suit some dogs with chronic pancreatitis or other chronic gastrointestinal conditions; loose stool alone does not mean a dog needs low-fat food. (VCA: Nutrition for Dogs and Cats with Gastrointestinal Upset)
More fiber Can help normalize gut motility in some fiber-responsive conditions. (VCA: Nutrition for Dogs and Cats with Gastrointestinal Upset)
Energy-dense May provide calories in a smaller volume when appetite is reduced, but a veterinarian should decide whether it is appropriate. (VCA: Nutrition for Dogs and Cats with Gastrointestinal Upset)
Novel-protein or hydrolyzed May be selected for a controlled food-allergy trial; the choice depends on the dog’s diet history and veterinary guidance. (VCA: Implementing an Elimination-Challenge Diet Trial in Dogs)

How to choose a food beyond its ingredient list

Ingredient lists alone do not establish a food’s quality. WSAVA cautions that the list gives no information on ingredient quality and may be misleading about the food overall. Review the full nutritional information with your veterinary team, including:

  • Who formulates the food and whether the company has qualified nutrition expertise.
  • The food’s nutritional adequacy statement and whether it is complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage.
  • Whether its nutrient profile and intended use fit the suspected medical need.

For general selection principles, see WSAVA’s Global Nutrition Guidelines. Home-prepared diets should be professionally formulated to avoid nutritional imbalance.

Is my Dachshund allergic to their food?

Food intolerance generally causes digestive problems without an immune response. A food allergy is an immune reaction, often to a protein. Symptoms alone cannot establish which is happening; your veterinarian will need a detailed diet history to assess possible triggers. Include current and past foods, treats, table scraps, supplements, flavored medications, and anything your dog may access. (VCA: Food Intolerance in Dogs)

Limited ingredient vs. hydrolyzed dog food

A novel-protein diet uses protein and carbohydrate sources your dog has not previously eaten. A hydrolyzed diet contains protein broken into smaller fragments. The veterinary team should choose based on your dog’s feeding history and the suspected problem.

A retail “limited ingredient” label does not make a food suitable for a controlled allergy trial. VCA warns that these foods may contain undeclared proteins or be exposed to cross-contamination during manufacturing. For a trial, use the veterinarian-selected therapeutic diet rather than choosing a product by label claim alone. (VCA: Implementing an Elimination-Challenge Diet Trial in Dogs)

How long should a dog stay on an elimination diet?

VCA’s guidance calls for feeding the elimination diet for at least eight weeks. During that phase, it must be the only food your dog receives. Even small extras can undermine the trial, so ask the veterinary team how to handle every edible or flavored product.

  • Do not give treats, chews, table scraps, or supplements unless the veterinary team approves them.
  • Check flavored toothpaste and medications with the veterinary team; they may contain protein.
  • Keep a record of what your dog eats and any symptoms.

Improvement during elimination does not by itself identify the ingredient responsible. A veterinarian-directed challenge phase, in which foods are reintroduced, is used to test the suspected trigger. (VCA: Implementing an Elimination-Challenge Diet Trial in Dogs)

Are bland diets or a gradual food change better?

“Bland diet” is not a precise prescription. VCA notes that a homemade chicken-and-rice diet is not complete and balanced and can vary in nutrient and calorie content. Ask your veterinarian exactly what to feed and for how long, and use a food diary if advised—especially if a temporary diet might continue beyond the brief period recommended.

For a routine food change, an older WSAVA guideline says some animals appear to have fewer gastrointestinal issues when food is changed gradually over 7–10 days. This is general transition guidance from 2011, not a proven rule for every dog; follow your clinician’s instructions if a prescribed diet needs a different transition. (WSAVA Nutritional Assessment Guidelines, 2011)

When does an upset stomach need veterinary care?

Do not rely on home management if your dog is lethargic, cannot drink because of nausea, is vomiting (including unproductive heaving), has blood in the stool, or has eaten a dangerous food such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, or artificial sweeteners. VCA advises veterinary care if diarrhea lasts more than three days or your pet worsens. Chronic or recurring digestive signs also warrant assessment, even if they seem mild.
