If mild digestive upset appears, pause at the last mix your pet tolerated; seek veterinary advice for vomiting, significant or persistent diarrhea, reduced appetite, or other worrying signs.
How long should a food transition take?
There is no single schedule that suits every pet. Tufts University recommends increasing the new food over at least a week, while The Animal Medical Center recommends 10 days for most healthy pets. The American Animal Hospital Association provides a seven-day, four-stage timeline. These are general guidelines, not guarantees; a pet’s tolerance should determine the pace.
For example, you can start with mostly the current food and a smaller share of the new food, then gradually increase the new share until the old food is phased out. The precise daily ratios vary among published guides, so treat this as a flexible progression rather than a fixed prescription. A pet with a sensitive stomach may need a slower change.
Keep portions consistent as you adjust the mix. A measuring scoop can make that easier, but it is optional and does not prevent illness or replace veterinary guidance.

How to switch foods step by step
- Choose a suitable food. For dogs, Cornell recommends a complete and balanced commercial diet appropriate to life stage, or a home-prepared diet planned with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist. Consider health needs identified by your veterinarian, rather than choosing a food solely because it is trending. Cornell’s guidance on re-evaluating a dog’s diet explains these considerations.
- Begin with a small share of the new food. Mix it thoroughly with the familiar food so the change is gradual.
- Increase the new food in stages. Continue toward a full portion of the new diet over roughly seven to 10 days for a generally healthy pet, adjusting the pace to your pet’s response.
- Watch your pet and their stool. If mild digestive signs develop, do not increase the new-food share until your pet is comfortable again.
The seven-day example in the AAHA transition timeline is one useful reference, not a requirement for every animal.
What to do if your pet develops diarrhea or mild stomach upset
Hold at the last food mix your pet tolerated and wait for mild signs to pass before trying the next increase. Tufts recommends this approach when a pet shows mild signs during a transition. If diarrhea followed a quick switch in a dog, Cornell advises returning to the original food until the stool firms, then restarting more slowly.

Do not assume that ongoing digestive symptoms are caused by the new food. Cornell notes that chronic digestive upset can have other underlying causes and recommends a veterinary appointment. A diet change intended to manage a medical condition should be made with your veterinarian’s guidance.
When to contact a veterinarian
Contact your veterinarian if your pet vomits, has significant diarrhea, or eats less than usual during the change. Seek prompt veterinary care for severe or persistent symptoms, blood in the stool, lethargy, weakness, or abdominal discomfort. For dogs with diarrhea, Cornell advises veterinary care if it has not resolved within 48–72 hours, or if it occurs alongside signs such as lethargy, black or tarry stool, or vomiting. Choosing a food is part of the transition
A gradual change can make the adjustment easier to monitor, but it cannot make an unsuitable diet appropriate. Choose food that fits your pet’s species, life stage, and veterinarian-identified health needs. The available guidance does not establish one best brand or a universally best transition schedule.
