Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is a working animal-care facility in Angel Canyon near Kanab, Utah—not a walk-in petting attraction. You can visit responsibly by reserving a tour, booking a volunteer shift or using the sanctuary’s approved public activities. Plan for a large, high-desert property, limited reception and scheduled access to animal-care areas.
The sanctuary is at 5001 Angel Canyon Road, reached from U.S. Highway 89. Best Friends says the property covers nearly 5,800 acres and can care for up to 1,600 animals on a given day, including dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, horses, pigs and rehabilitating wildlife. Those figures come from the organization’s current web pages; no publication year or independent methodology is stated.

What makes Best Friends Animal Sanctuary different
Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is a rescue and rehabilitation campus rather than an attraction built around spontaneous animal encounters. Its animal-care centers operate as workplaces, so visitors cannot simply walk in, wander through kennels or ask to handle animals. The experience is structured around tours, scheduled volunteer work and designated public areas.

The setting is part of the experience. Angel Canyon is a broad, quiet landscape in southern Utah, and the sanctuary’s nearly 5,800 acres give the operation room for specialized care, rehabilitation and outdoor programs. The organization reports more than 30,000 visitors annually, but that figure is not dated on the current visitor FAQ and is not presented as an independently verified study.

Expect a place where animal welfare controls the timetable. A tour may pass through public-facing areas without entering every care space. A volunteer shift may involve cleaning, preparation, enrichment or outdoor work rather than cuddling animals. Staff can change access when an animal’s health, stress level or safety requires it.
Can I visit the Best Friends sanctuary?
Yes, but arrange an activity before you arrive. Best Friends’ visitor FAQ states that the sanctuary is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mountain Time every day except Christmas. Hours, capacity and individual programs can change, so confirm the current schedule with the official visitor information before setting out.
Why walk-ins do not work
Animal-care centers do not admit walk-in visitors. The welcome area and other designated public spaces may be available during operating hours, but entry to care areas requires a reservation or an approved assignment. Arriving without a booking can leave you with no tour or volunteer placement, especially during busy travel periods.
How to reserve your visit
- Choose an activity. Decide whether you want an overview tour, a focused tour, a volunteer shift, a hike or an approved dog outing or sleepover.
- Check the calendar. Look for available dates, start times, age or participation requirements and any seasonal restrictions.
- Reserve early. The sanctuary advises booking tours and volunteer shifts in advance because they can fill.
- Read the confirmation. Note the meeting point, arrival time, transportation instructions, clothing requirements and cancellation or change procedures.
- Recheck shortly before travel. Hours, staffing, seasonal departures, prices and animal-access rules are subject to change.
Choose the right sanctuary activity
Grand tour: the broad introduction
A grand tour is the most practical first choice if you want to understand how the sanctuary is organized. It provides an overview of the property, the mission and several animal-care programs without requiring you to decide on one species or department immediately. It is a scheduled viewing experience, not a promise of hands-on contact.
Allow time for transportation between areas and for staff instructions. The property is extensive, and the pace can be shaped by animal welfare, weather and the group’s mobility. Wear footwear suitable for sandy surfaces even if the itinerary includes vehicle travel.
Focused tours: go deeper into a particular area
Focused tours are designed for visitors who already know which kind of animal care interests them. Available subjects and schedules can vary. A focused option may be a better fit than a grand tour for someone returning to the sanctuary or traveling with a specific interest, but it may show less of the overall campus.
Do not assume that a focused tour guarantees entry into every building or direct contact with animals. Staff determine what is appropriate for the animals and the day’s operations.

Angels Rest
Angels Rest is listed among the sanctuary’s tour options. It is associated with remembrance and the animals who have died, so it may suit visitors seeking a quieter, reflective part of the campus. Check the current description and meeting details when booking; the organization can adjust tour routes.
Volunteering: the route to useful hands-on work
Volunteering is the official route for closer participation in animal care. Assignments can include preparation, cleaning, enrichment, maintenance or other tasks that keep a care center functioning. The work may be physical and may not involve handling animals. Follow the assignment you receive rather than requesting unscheduled access to another area.
Volunteer preparation guidance recommends practical clothing, water and sun protection. Horse and pig assignments require long pants, and some areas may require long pants even when other activities do not. Do not bring a personal pet when volunteering unless the sanctuary has specifically instructed you otherwise.
Hiking and public-facing animal spaces
Hiking can add time outdoors without entering animal-care work areas. Stick to routes and signs provided by the sanctuary, carry water and plan for bright sun and sandy footing. Public-facing adoptable-animal spaces may be open at designated times, but availability depends on staffing and the animals’ needs.
Approved dog outings and sleepovers
The sanctuary describes a process for approved dog outings and animal sleepovers. These are arranged through the appropriate staff or program, not claimed spontaneously at the welcome center. Ask about eligibility, scheduling, transport, supervision and return procedures before promising an outing to a particular animal.
Tour or volunteer shift? Compare the visit choices
| Option | What it provides | Planning implications | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand tour | Broad introduction to the sanctuary and its programs | Reserve a scheduled time; route and animal access can vary | First-time visitors who want context |
| Focused tour | More attention to a selected animal-care area or theme | Confirm the current subject, meeting point and restrictions | Returning visitors or people with a specific interest |
| Angels Rest tour | A quieter, reflective visit to a listed sanctuary destination | Check the current route and schedule | Visitors interested in remembrance and sanctuary history |
| Volunteer shift | Scheduled work that supports daily animal care | Book early; follow clothing, safety and assignment rules | People who want to contribute practical labor |
| Hike or public area | Outdoor time and access to designated visitor spaces | Stay on permitted routes; public access can be limited by operations | Visitors who prefer a flexible, lower-contact visit |
| Approved dog outing or sleepover | Closer time with an eligible animal through a formal program | Advance approval and program-specific instructions are required | Visitors prepared to follow a structured animal outing |
Seasonal tour departure from the Roadhouse
The tour information currently lists a seasonal Roadhouse departure from May 21 through October 31, typically Thursday through Monday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. The departure is subject to staffing and capacity, so treat those dates and times as a planning lead rather than a guaranteed service. Recheck the official schedule before booking lodging or building a day around it.
If your reservation starts elsewhere, allow time to park, check in and reach the meeting point. Do not assume that a town hotel, an on-site cabin or a personal vehicle can substitute for the transportation described in your confirmation.

How to plan a responsible day
- Start with the calendar. Select a tour or volunteer shift before arranging meals and lodging.
- Read the participation rules. Confirm age requirements, clothing, mobility considerations and whether personal pets are allowed for that activity.
- Build in high-desert travel time. Distances within the property, sandy paths and a slower animal-care schedule can make a short-looking itinerary take most of a day.
- Arrive prepared. Bring water, sun protection, sturdy footwear and any required identification or confirmation details.
- Keep the schedule flexible. A care team may pause, reroute or shorten an encounter to protect an animal.
- Use public amenities at the right time. If you plan to eat at Angel Village café, check that the current service hours and price still apply.
Where to stay near Best Friends Animal Sanctuary
Best Friends lists several lodging categories for sanctuary visitors. Availability changes, and the organization advises booking early.
| Lodging choice | Setting | Planning question |
|---|---|---|
| Roadhouse | A hotel-style option in Kanab associated with sanctuary visits | Does its location and departure schedule fit your booked activity? |
| On-site cottages | Sanctuary-ground accommodation | Do you prefer staying close to the work site and its quiet setting? |
| On-site cabins | Sanctuary-ground accommodation with a more rustic character | Can you obtain the dates and facilities your group needs? |
| RV sites | On-site space for visitors traveling with an RV | Are hookups, vehicle limits and reservation terms suitable for your rig? |
| Other Kanab lodging | Hotels, rentals and other accommodations in town | How will you reach the sanctuary for an early tour or volunteer shift? |
The official pages do not provide a current comparative price or accessibility matrix for these choices. Contact the property or lodging desk for room features, routes, transportation and specific accommodation needs rather than inferring them from the lodging category.
What to pack for Angel Canyon
Best Friends describes the sanctuary as a high-desert location at approximately 5,000 feet. Bright sunlight, low humidity and sandy walking terrain can make conditions feel more demanding than a town walk at the same temperature.
- Sun protection: Pack year-round sunblock and a hat. The organization specifically recommends both.
- Water: Carry water during outdoor activities; do not rely on finding a refill point exactly where you need one.
- Footwear: Rugged sneakers or light hiking boots are recommended for sand and uneven walking surfaces. Specialized boots are not stated to be required.
- Layers: Fall and winter visitors should bring layers because temperatures can change substantially between morning and afternoon.
- Long pants: Wear them for horse and pig volunteering and for any assignment whose confirmation requires them.
- Practical clothing: Choose clothes that can tolerate dust, sun and animal-care work; avoid anything you cannot comfortably move or clean.
These are the sanctuary’s visitor recommendations, not individualized medical advice. If elevation, heat, sun exposure or walking distance could affect you, ask the sanctuary about the planned route and make your own health preparations.
Personal pets: what is and is not allowed
Personal pets may be permitted in some public areas, including trails and the welcome center, but the rules are specific:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Pets cannot enter animal areas or workshops.
- Pets cannot enter indoor dining areas.
- Outside, pets must remain on a leash no longer than six feet.
- Never leave a pet unattended in a vehicle.
- Do not bring a personal pet when volunteering unless Best Friends has given you different instructions.
Adoption-related questions involving your own dog or cat should be directed to Best Friends before arrival. A pet that is acceptable on a trail may still be barred from a particular tour, building or volunteer assignment, so confirm the rule for your reservation rather than relying on the general public-area policy.
Food, Wi-Fi and practical amenities
Angel Village café
The tour page currently describes a daily plant-based buffet lunch at Angel Village café from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and lists a price of $5 per person. Because service times and prices can change, verify both before depending on the café for your meal. Bring a backup snack if your tour or volunteer assignment could run outside that window.

Store and connectivity
The sanctuary lists a store for visitors and free guest Wi-Fi in nearly all sanctuary buildings. Reception can be spotty in some areas, so download confirmations, directions and emergency contact details before leaving reliable service. Do not assume that a live phone connection will be available on a trail or between animal-care centers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safety and animal etiquette
Follow staff instructions even when they differ from what you expected to see. An animal may be resting, recovering, fearful, newly arrived or receiving treatment. Keep voices low, do not feed anything unless instructed, and never open a gate, enter a room or approach an animal outside the activity’s rules.

Stay with your assigned group or volunteer team. Use only designated paths and visitor areas, watch your footing on sand and uneven ground, and take sun and hydration breaks before you feel impaired. If weather, heat or an animal-care emergency changes the program, accept the adjustment rather than pressing for the original itinerary.
Combining the sanctuary with a Kanab trip
Kanab makes a useful base for a southern Utah visit, and the sanctuary is close to other regional destinations. Treat the sanctuary reservation as the fixed part of your plan: animal-care activities have specific start times and may fill before your travel dates. Add sightseeing around that commitment, not the other way around.
For area advice, road conditions and any permits required at nearby destinations, consult the official Kanab tourism office and the relevant land-management agency. The sanctuary cannot substitute for a permit office or provide a blanket answer about every regional trail.

Quick Recap
A simple decision guide
- Choose a grand tour if this is your first visit and you want the broadest introduction.
- Choose a focused tour if one animal-care area matters more than seeing the whole operation.
- Choose volunteering if you want to contribute scheduled labor and can follow assignment-specific clothing and safety rules.
- Choose hiking or public spaces if you prefer outdoor time with less direct animal interaction.
- Ask about an approved dog outing or sleepover if you want extended time with an eligible animal and can complete the required process.
- Choose on-site lodging if proximity and a sanctuary setting are your priorities; choose Kanab lodging if town access and a broader regional itinerary matter more.
