Best Friends Podcast episode 148 is a dated conversation about animal-shelter intake and outcomes, not a full guide to shelter capacity. Published September 14, 2023, it features Best Friends Chief Program Officer Marc Peralta. The official episode description outlines the topics but does not provide a transcript, so it cannot establish every point made in the recording.
What episode 148 covers
Best Friends Animal Society published “Getting caught up with Marc Peralta” on September 14, 2023, marking the podcast’s return after a hiatus. The publisher says host and guest discussed what was happening around the country with shelter intake and outcomes, recent news articles about shelter conditions, and how Peralta draws on his animal-welfare experience during difficult periods.

That description establishes the episode’s subject and framing, but it is not a transcript. The episode page does not supply enough detail to reconstruct all of Peralta’s arguments or attribute specific spoken claims to him. The publisher’s description says he had “the past 17 years in animal welfare” of experience; that is the publisher’s wording, not a verified current measure of his career or a verbatim quote from the recording.
Who Marc Peralta is
Best Friends identifies Peralta as its Chief Program Officer, responsible for coordinating the organization’s programs and supporting partner organizations. Its published biography also recounts leadership roles in Los Angeles and Pennsylvania, along with earlier animal-care management roles in Nevada and Colorado. This is career information as presented by Best Friends.

What the KC Pet Project report adds
One of the resources listed with the episode is KC Pet Project’s July 2023 report. Its figures provide a local example of shelter activity in Kansas City, not a national estimate or a complete measure of shelter conditions across the country.
| Measure | January–July 2022 | January–July 2023 |
|---|---|---|
| Dog and cat intakes | 8,767 | 8,936 |
| Adoptions | 5,735 | 5,557 |
| Live-release rate | 96.6% | 93.1% |
All values are reported by KC Pet Project for the stated seven-month periods. The counts show 169 more intakes and 178 fewer adoptions in January–July 2023 than in the corresponding 2022 period; those differences are arithmetic comparisons of the report’s figures, not separate reported measures. Intake, adoption, and live-release rate are distinct measures: the table does not show the full disposition of every animal or explain why the rate changed.

KC Pet Project described July 2023 as unusually difficult. Its report says 818 dogs arrived in Kansas City shelters during the month and that dogs brought in as strays rose 24%. These are local, report-specific figures; they should not be read as national trends or as figures for the entire January–July period.
