The broader series is described as a bi-weekly vlog about the future of animal welfare during a crisis. Its page says guests discuss solutions, examples, and advice from across the field. That context helps explain the series’ interest in organizational culture, but it does not establish a particular argument made in this episode. Best Friends’ series page gives the series description.

In a November 3, 2021 post, Castle said Best Friends was recognized in Utah’s Top Workplaces awards and that she received a leadership award for large Utah companies. She said the awards were based exclusively on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by Energage. According to Castle’s account, the survey measured engagement drivers such as alignment with organizational values, confidence in the organization’s direction, and meaningful work. Castle’s post describes the recognition and survey process.

This identifies the stated basis for the awards; it is not an independent assessment of animal-welfare outcomes or a comprehensive measure of workplace conditions.
What does Best Friends mean by workplace culture?
Best Friends’ Culture Initiatives Playbook describes culture in practical terms: how people communicate and treat one another, plan, make decisions, and do their work. The organization’s proposed practices include leadership accountability, collecting input from employees and stakeholders, and reviewing employee surveys and human-resources data alongside lifesaving and financial data. It also recommends setting a baseline and goals, then incorporating culture into recruitment, onboarding, advancement, and continuing staff training.

The playbook is a related resource, not a transcript or proof of what Castle and Sizemore discussed in the 2021 episode. Best Friends says the page was updated in May 2022, after the episode was published. See the Culture Initiatives Playbook for its recommendations.

What figures did Castle share in 2021?
Castle’s November 3, 2021 post included two dated snapshots. She said about 40% of Best Friends’ nearly 800 staff worked remotely, noting that remote work had been available before the pandemic made it commonplace. This is the organization’s figure at that time, not a current staffing estimate.
Rank #3
The same post reported that about 347,000 dogs and cats were killed in shelters in 2020, compared with about 17 million per year when Best Friends began. These are historical figures as Castle presented them; the post does not independently establish the methodology behind either estimate. They should not be treated as current counts or as independently verified national estimates.
