Choose each item for a behavior it enables—burrowing, hiding, chewing, foraging, climbing, running or bathing—then inspect and replace destructible toys as they become wet, soiled or unsafe. A toy is not suitable merely because it is sold for small animals: its material, dimensions and failure points matter.
Start with the habitat, not a toy pile
Gerbils spend much of their active time modifying their surroundings. They dig tunnels, make nests, carry food, shred material and investigate new routes. Enrichment works best when it is built into the enclosure rather than added as a collection of permanent ornaments. The bedding, hides and chew items should let your gerbils change the space themselves.

Deep bedding is the main burrowing toy
Use compressible paper bedding at least 20–30 cm deep. Animal and Veterinary Service (Singapore NParks, 2026) gives that depth as a burrowing and nesting standard. Put it across most of the floor, not only in a small corner, and press it gently so tunnels can hold their shape without becoming a hard block.
Deep substrate does more than provide exercise. It gives gerbils a place to retreat, sleep and store food away from light and activity. Avoid scented bedding, dusty loose products and materials that become stringy when wet. Remove damp patches and replenish clean substrate so a tunnel network can remain while the soiled section is taken out.

Build a stable base for tunnels
Place heavy, stable hides and partially buried tubes on the enclosure floor before adding bedding. This prevents a collapsing object from trapping an animal beneath it. Cardboard or polycarbonate tubes and huts can be partly buried to imitate a burrow; the University of Washington Office of Animal Welfare advises replacing its listed tubes about every two weeks, or sooner if they are excessively soiled or chewed.
Choose shelters with smooth edges, no loose wire and openings large enough that a gerbil cannot wedge its head, foot or tail. Do not seal every route: several entrances let an animal leave if another gerbil is resting inside.
Match each toy to the behavior it supports
| Behavior | Useful items | What to check | When to replace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burrowing and hiding | 20–30 cm paper bedding; partly buried cardboard or approved plastic-free tubes; sturdy huts | No collapse hazard, sharp edge or limb-trapping opening | Remove when wet, moldy, heavily soiled or structurally weak |
| Chewing and shredding | Plain cardboard tubes, boxes, drink holders, egg cartons, tissue boxes; untreated wood | No paint, varnish, chemical treatment, staples or splinters | As soon as fragments become sharp or the item is contaminated |
| Running | Large solid-surface wheel | Back stays broadly straight; no wire bars, exposed axle or trapping gap | Immediately if cracked, unstable or too small |
| Bathing | Sturdy glass or ceramic dish with gerbil-safe bathing sand | Shallow layer; sand specifically suitable for gerbils, not unverified dust | Refresh when contaminated; remove between scheduled sessions if needed |
| Foraging | Scattered food, paper puzzles and rearranged cardboard | Food remains dry and accessible; puzzle cannot trap a limb | Discard damp food or damaged puzzle pieces |
| Climbing and exploring outside the enclosure | Escape-proof playpen with paper bags, cereal boxes, paper cups, toilet-paper rolls and untreated wood | Constant supervision and no route to escape or chew hazardous material | Remove sharp fragments during the session |
How to choose a safe running wheel
Use diameter and posture together
Buy a wheel with a solid running surface and a diameter of at least 20 cm, the minimum cited by the Royal Veterinary Center’s current care sheet. In practice, a 20–30 cm wheel often gives more comfortable clearance, especially for larger adults. Watch a gerbil run rather than relying on the package label: the spine should remain broadly straight. BC SPCA warns that a back curved into a U shape means the wheel is too small.
A wheel that forces a bent posture can make running uncomfortable and limits normal stride. If the gerbil’s back arches, replace the wheel with the next larger diameter even if the animal can technically use it.
Why solid surfaces are safer
Wire or barred wheels can catch toes and feet. BC SPCA describes solid surfaces as safer and more comfortable than wire because wire can injure gerbil feet. RSPCA guidance likewise calls for a large, solid, axle-free design so feet or legs cannot become trapped.

Inspect the running track for cracks, raised seams and gaps where a toe or tail could enter. An enclosed bearing or side-mounted mechanism is preferable to an exposed axle in the running path. Secure the stand so the wheel cannot tip into bedding or press against the enclosure wall.
Wheel checks after installation
- Set the wheel on a level, stable surface above the deepest loose bedding, or anchor it so digging cannot tilt it.
- Spin it by hand. It should move smoothly without scraping the stand or wall.
- Run a finger around the track and frame to find rough seams, cracks or pinch points.
- Observe each gerbil running. Replace the wheel if the back forms a U, feet slip through an opening or the wheel wobbles.
- Clean according to the material’s instructions, dry it fully and return it only when no residue remains.
Cardboard and wood: the best everyday chews
Cardboard that is simple and plain
Plain cardboard tubes, small boxes, drink holders, egg cartons and tissue boxes provide both chewing and hiding. Remove tape, glossy labels, plastic windows, staples and heavily dyed sections first. A toilet-paper roll can become a tunnel, while a box with two or more entrances can be filled loosely with bedding for a shredding project.

Cardboard is intentionally temporary. Take it out when it is wet, moldy, strongly soiled or reduced to sharp, hard fragments. If a piece is destroyed overnight, replace it rather than leaving the remaining edges as a potential puncture hazard.
Untreated wood only
Untreated wooden bridges, logs and chew blocks are suitable when they are non-splintering and free of paint, varnish, stain and chemical treatment. Sand rough edges before use and check the item daily for splinters. Remove it at the first sign of a sharp shard or a loose fastener.
Do not assume every branch is safe: wood collected outdoors may carry pesticides, fungi or parasites. A commercially prepared, untreated item with a known material is easier to evaluate. Plastic may be acceptable as a smooth, intact structural component, but remove any plastic object as soon as chewing starts; swallowed fragments can be dangerous.

Sand baths: a controlled bathing opportunity
Provide a sturdy glass or ceramic dish containing approximately 1 cm of gerbil-safe bathing sand. The Office of Animal Welfare at the University of Washington specifies offering such a dish once per week for at least eight hours. A shallow layer lets gerbils roll without turning the dish into a deep excavation and is easier to keep clean.
Set up and maintain the bath
- Choose a heavy dish that cannot be tipped easily and has a low enough rim for comfortable entry.
- Add about 1 cm of sand labeled for gerbils or small-animal bathing.
- Place it on a stable surface away from the most active digging zone.
- Offer it weekly for the eight-hour minimum, then remove it if it becomes a toilet or is scattered through the bedding.
- Sift visible debris and refresh contaminated sand; wash and dry the dish before refilling.
Do not substitute an unverified dusty powder. Fine airborne particles can irritate the respiratory tract, and a product marketed for another species may not be appropriate for gerbils. If bathing causes persistent sneezing, eye irritation or skin problems, remove the product and ask an exotic-animal veterinarian.
Foraging toys that make food last longer
Foraging turns feeding into a search task without requiring complicated equipment. Scatter a measured portion of the normal diet through the bedding so gerbils must investigate tunnels and chambers. You can also place a few pieces in a loosely closed paper carton or a cardboard tube with openings at both ends.
Simple puzzle ideas
- Fold the ends of a plain cardboard tube inward, leaving gaps that a gerbil can open.
- Put dry food inside an empty tissue box with a small amount of shredded paper.
- Hide a few pieces beneath separate, lightweight paper cups in a secure playpen.
- Move one or two food stations when refreshing the enclosure so the search route changes.
Use only food your veterinarian considers part of the normal diet, and keep portions measured so enrichment does not cause overfeeding. Remove damp or spoiled food promptly. A puzzle should challenge sniffing and manipulation, never require force or create a tunnel with no exit.
Safe playpen enrichment outside the enclosure
Out-of-enclosure exercise is optional enrichment, not a replacement for a deep habitat. Use a dry, escape-proof playpen with solid sides and remain present for the entire session. BC SPCA lists paper bags, cereal boxes, paper cups, toilet-paper rolls and untreated wood as suitable supervised items.

Prepare the area
- Close doors and block gaps beneath furniture, vents and cables.
- Remove houseplants, cleaning products, electrical cords, fabrics with loose threads and other chew hazards.
- Arrange boxes, bags and wood so gerbils can go over, through and around them, with clear exits from every object.
- Keep a carrier or familiar hide nearby for a calm return to the enclosure.
- Watch continuously. End the session if an animal shows distress, overheats, stops moving normally or chews an item into sharp pieces.
Never leave a gerbil unattended in a bathtub, open room or exercise ball. Smooth plastic balls can restrict ventilation and cause collisions; a supervised playpen provides more control and choice.
Rotation, cleaning and replacement
Rotate without removing security
Keep the main nest area and some familiar tunnels in place while changing one or two destructible items at a time. Rotate a cardboard box, a chew block or a foraging location every several days rather than dismantling the entire habitat. Gradual changes preserve scent cues and social stability while adding novelty.
Daily inspection checklist
- Check the wheel for cracks, wobble, rough seams and trapped bedding.
- Feel cardboard and wood for dampness, mold, splinters and sharp fragments.
- Look at every hide opening for loose fibers, collapsed panels or a narrowing gap.
- Remove uneaten fresh food and any soiled sand.
- Confirm that heavy structures remain stable after digging.
Replace a tube or hut sooner than the University of Washington’s roughly two-week interval if it is degraded. That interval is a practical change-out point for the listed cardboard or polycarbonate items, not permission to keep a damaged object until the date arrives.
Cleaning without erasing the habitat
Spot-clean wet bedding and contaminated objects first. During a larger clean, retain a portion of clean, familiar nesting material and return it with the fresh substrate. Avoid strong fragrances and rinse any washable item thoroughly, allowing it to dry completely before use. A sterile-looking enclosure is less important than a dry, safe one that still smells familiar.

Materials and designs to avoid
- Wire or barred wheels: toes and feet can slip through and be injured.
- Small wheels: a U-shaped running posture indicates inadequate diameter.
- Exposed axles and narrow gaps: feet, legs or tails may become trapped.
- Painted, varnished or chemically treated wood: chewing can expose coatings or residues.
- Splintering branches or cracked plastic: sharp fragments can puncture the mouth or be swallowed.
- Loose string, fluffy nesting fibers and frayed fabric: threads can wrap around limbs or be ingested.
- Dusty, unverified bathing powders: respiratory safety is not established merely by a “small animal” label.
- Toys with one tiny entrance: a frightened or resting gerbil may become trapped or blocked by bedding.
A practical buying plan
You do not need to buy everything at once. Prioritize the items that create a safe environment, then add variety as you observe how your gerbils use it.

When comparing products, evaluate behavior supported, material safety, wheel geometry, expected replacement rate, cleaning effort and whether the item can be inspected easily. Availability and price vary by location; a simple local cardboard box may be safer and more useful than an elaborate imported toy.
How toys fit into gerbil welfare
Enrichment supplements, but does not replace, appropriate social housing, ventilation, diet, veterinary care and daily observation. Gerbils are social animals, and a toy cannot compensate for isolation. Keep compatible gerbils housed according to veterinary and welfare advice, introduce changes carefully and monitor for fighting or resource guarding around a new hide.
Observe behavior after each change. More digging, relaxed grooming, normal eating and confident exploration suggest the item is useful. Repeated chewing of a dangerous edge, avoidance, frantic escape attempts or respiratory irritation means the item or its placement should be changed immediately.
Quick decision guide
If your gerbil ignores a new toy
Leave a familiar scent nearby, partly bury the item and place a small amount of normal food around it. Some gerbils investigate after the room is quiet. If it remains unused and blocks a preferred route, remove it and offer a simpler cardboard alternative.
If the wheel is used but the back arches
Stop using that wheel and choose a larger solid model. Measure the running posture again when the gerbil is fully grown; a wheel that fit a juvenile may become too small.
If cardboard is destroyed immediately
That is normal chewing behavior, not a reason to remove all cardboard. Keep several inexpensive plain pieces available, remove fragments that become sharp and provide an intact hide while the shredded material is replaced.
If the sand bath becomes a toilet
Remove contaminated sand, wash and dry the dish, and offer the weekly bath at a different time or location. Refresh it whenever it is soiled rather than leaving dirty sand in the enclosure.

Final safety check before use
- Can the gerbil enter and leave every hide without squeezing through a narrow opening?
- Is the wheel solid, stable, axle-safe and large enough for a straight back?
- Are cardboard and wood plain, dry and free of sharp or splintering edges?
- Is the bathing sand specifically suitable for gerbils and limited to a shallow layer?
- Are heavy items supported so digging cannot make them collapse?
- Will you be able to inspect and replace destructible parts every day?
- Is out-of-enclosure play fully supervised in an escape-proof pen?
If the answer to any question is no, fix that point before adding another toy. A small number of safe, replaceable items in a deep, stable habitat provides more meaningful enrichment than a crowded enclosure full of risky accessories.
