Treat the word as marketing language, then check the nutritional adequacy statement, feeding directions, and whether the product is a full diet or only a treat or supplement.
What does “gourmet” mean on cat food?
“Gourmet” is a marketing cue, not a nutritional standard. It does not, by itself, establish that a food is nutritionally complete, made with higher-quality ingredients, or appropriate for a particular cat. The package’s nutritional adequacy statement is a more useful starting point than culinary language on the front.
AAFCO explains that “complete” means a product contains all required nutrients, while “balanced” means those nutrients are present in the correct ratios. Look for a statement indicating that the food is complete and balanced for a relevant life stage. The Association’s guide to reading pet food labels explains where to find and interpret it.
How to tell whether a gourmet food can be a cat’s main diet
A complete-and-balanced food is intended to serve as the sole diet for the life stage stated on the label. According to the FDA, adequacy is established by meeting an AAFCO nutrient profile or passing an AAFCO feeding trial. A product marked for intermittent or supplemental feeding is not presented as a complete diet; treats and supplements are generally additions, not substitutes for a cat’s regular food.

Check the back or side of the package for the nutritional adequacy statement. Confirm that the product is cat food, that the statement covers your cat’s life stage, and that it says the food is complete and balanced if you intend to feed it as the main diet. Front-of-package claims, endorsements, and attractive ingredient lists do not replace this check.
Match the food to your cat’s life stage and condition
AAFCO recognizes life-stage categories including growth, maintenance, gestation/lactation, and all life stages. Nutrient amounts and ratios differ, so choose a food whose adequacy statement fits your cat’s stage rather than assuming that every premium or gourmet formula is suitable for every cat.

Feeding directions are a starting point, not a fixed prescription. AAFCO advises adjusting them for the individual animal’s activity and condition. Use the package guidance as a reference and consult your veterinarian about individual health questions or therapeutic-food decisions.
Compare wet and dry food without being misled by percentages
Guaranteed-analysis percentages are usually reported “as fed,” while nutrient profiles are expressed on a dry-matter basis. Because wet and dry foods contain different amounts of water, comparing their listed nutrient percentages directly can be misleading. The FDA says canned pet food is typically 75 to 78 percent moisture and dry pet food typically 10 to 12 percent; these are general figures from its consumer guidance, not measurements of a particular product.

To convert a nutrient guarantee to a dry-matter basis:
- Calculate dry matter: subtract the food’s moisture percentage from 100.
- Divide the nutrient percentage on the label by the dry-matter percentage.
- Multiply the result by 100.
For example, a food with 78 percent moisture has 22 percent dry matter. Divide its listed nutrient percentage by 22, then multiply by 100. Use the same method for the other food before comparing nutrient percentages. The FDA’s Complete and Balanced Pet Food guidance provides the conversion context and gives 26 percent dry matter as the adult-cat maintenance crude-protein minimum in its example. That figure is a profile example, not a claim about any named gourmet product.

Why the ingredient list is not a quality score
Ingredients are generally listed in descending order by weight, but that order alone does not tell you whether a food is nutritionally adequate or how good its ingredients are. WSAVA’s Global Nutrition Committee cautions that “the ingredient list gives no information on the quality of the ingredients and can be very misleading on the overall quality of the food.” Read the adequacy statement and feeding information alongside the ingredient list rather than using a prominent ingredient as a verdict.
For individual health concerns, the FDA advises pet owners to consult veterinary professionals; it does not recommend one product over another. Its guidance on animal food labeling and pet food claims explains the limits of label claims.

A practical checklist before buying
- Confirm the product is labeled as cat food.
- Find the nutritional adequacy statement, usually on the back or side of the package.
- Check whether it is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage, or intended only for intermittent or supplemental feeding.
- Compare foods for the same life stage and consider calorie content as well as feeding directions.
- For wet-versus-dry nutrient comparisons, convert percentages to a dry-matter basis rather than comparing as-fed figures.
- Use feeding directions as guidance and adjust for your cat’s activity and condition.
- Ask your veterinarian about food choices tied to an individual health need.
