Measure your dog, use the size chart for the exact harness model, then check how it fits while your dog stands and moves. A well-fitted body harness can keep leash pressure off the neck, but it should also stay clear of the throat and armpits, allow normal breathing and stride, and resist slipping if your dog backs up.
What size harness does a Basset Hound need?
Choose by your dog’s measurements, not breed name or weight alone. Harness sizes are not standardized between makers, and two dogs of similar weight can have different chest measurements. Measure your Basset Hound while standing, then compare the results with the instructions and size chart for the specific model you are considering. PetMD explains how to measure a dog for a harness at its harness measurement guide; use the manufacturer’s own directions if they differ.
Many size charts use chest girth measured around the broadest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Some also request a neck or shoulder measurement. Follow the chart’s exact placement and units, and do not assume that a “medium” or “large” in one brand matches the same label in another. The American Kennel Club’s harness guidance likewise emphasizes getting the measurements right.
How to check whether a harness fits
A size label is only a starting point. Adjust the straps individually and assess the harness on your dog, not just while it is lying flat. Tufts veterinary guidance notes that a loose harness may let a dog escape, while a poorly fitted one can rub or restrict movement; VCA also advises checking fit and supervising dogs wearing harnesses.

- Check the throat and chest. The harness should not press on the throat or shift toward it when the leash is attached.
- Check the armpits. Straps should not chafe behind the front legs or sit so close that they rub as your dog walks.
- Watch movement. Have your dog walk, turn, and sit. The harness should stay centered without rotating or sliding, and your dog should be able to breathe fully and take a normal stride.
- Check security. Make sure your dog cannot back out of the harness. Recheck the fit after the first walks and whenever your dog’s body changes.
Remove the harness when your dog is unsupervised if it could become caught or entangled. VCA’s guidance on collars, harnesses, and leashes recommends supervision and removing equipment when a dog cannot be watched.
When a body harness may be preferable to a collar
If neck pressure is a concern because your dog pulls or has a relevant health condition, a body harness is a reasonable option to discuss with your veterinarian. Tufts veterinary behaviorist Stephanie Borns-Weil cautions that “Pressure on the throat and neck, may also dangerously impair breathing for brachycephalic dogs and aggravate collapsing trachea in small dogs.” Read the full Tufts guidance on dog collars and harnesses. These recommendations do not mean every Basset Hound has BOAS or another condition that makes a collar unsuitable. Ask your veterinarian for individualized advice if your dog has a respiratory, eye, neck, or mobility problem.

A 2022 review in Veterinary Record reports that studies found reduced shoulder extension with the harnesses tested, while noting limitations in the evidence. This is a reason to observe your dog’s movement in the actual harness rather than assuming that any harness design is movement-neutral: the review of dog harnesses and their effects on canine biomechanics.

A breed recommendation can help identify a model to investigate, but it cannot confirm the right size or fit for an individual dog. One Basset Hound sizing guide explicitly warns that dogs at similar weights may differ in chest girth. A 2026 UK Company of Animals catalogue lists Basset Hound in a Halti Optifit sizing recommendation, but the Optifit is a headcollar, not a body harness. Treat it as a breed-specific sizing reference only, and confirm the current chart and suitability for your dog: Company of Animals’ 2026 UK catalogue.
