No horse calming supplement has been shown in the available evidence to work reliably for every horse or guarantee a stress-free ride. Research on individual ingredients is limited, and results for multi-ingredient products are mixed. If your horse’s behavior has changed or is concerning, ask a veterinarian to assess it before assuming anxiety is the cause or trying a supplement.

Does your horse need a calming supplement?

Some owners consider calming products for situations such as farrier visits, shows, or trailer rides. But a supplement is not a substitute for finding out why a horse is unsettled. A new or pronounced behavior change can warrant veterinary assessment; discuss the horse’s circumstances with your veterinarian before adding a product.

There is no evidence-supported universal “best” calming supplement in the studies and veterinary guidance available here. Products may contain ingredients associated with calming claims, but a plausible mechanism or an ingredient on a label does not establish a dependable behavioral effect in horses.

What studies say about common calming ingredients

L-tryptophan

In a controlled crossover study, Noble and colleagues gave 12 Thoroughbreds 6.3 g of L-tryptophan or placebo. Tryptophan levels in the blood rose, but the researchers did not observe marked behavioral changes under the conditions tested. They called for further work to establish an effective dose and refine behavioral tests. The finding does not support promising an immediate calming effect from tryptophan alone. Magnesium

The Merck Veterinary Manual review of magnesium as an equine dietary supplement says dietary magnesium deficiency is rare in horses and low-level supplementation is unlikely to influence behavior. Commonly recommended amounts are unlikely to provide meaningful clinical benefit, while high supplementation can pose risks. Some jurisdictions also test for excessive magnesium supplementation. Do not use high or casual doses as a do-it-yourself calming strategy; ask your veterinarian whether supplementation is appropriate for your horse.

Multi-ingredient blends

A 2023 study followed 14 young horses for 59 days while they received a blend of citrus botanical oils, magnesium, and yeast. Some outcomes related to trailering cortisol and startle response tended toward a difference, while other measurements did not differ. The authors considered a benefit possible, but this small trial does not establish general effectiveness or show that other blends work. Read the study abstract.

Other ingredients on labels

Products may also include thiamin (vitamin B1), theanine, or valerian. Ingredient presence and marketing claims are not proof of a reliable behavioral effect. PetMD notes that valerian may be prohibited in some competitions, so check the applicable rules rather than assuming an ingredient is permitted. PetMD’s guide to calming supplements for horses discusses common ingredients and considerations.

How to compare a horse calming supplement

Compare the actual package label and evidence for the specific product, not just a blend name or the word “calming.” Useful checks include:

  • Ingredient and amount: Identify each ingredient and its amount per serving. A proprietary or descriptive blend name alone does not tell you what the horse receives.
  • Evidence: Look for research on the same ingredient or finished product, and note the study population, conditions, and measured outcomes. A small study or suggestive trend is not proof of a dependable result.
  • Practical format: Consider whether the product is a daily powder or pellet, or a paste intended for a particular occasion. Format does not establish that one product works better.
  • Competition rules: Check eligibility for your discipline and jurisdiction using current rules and the actual product label.
  • Veterinary advice and label clarity: Ask whether your horse needs supplementation and whether the manufacturer provides clear, current ingredient information.

Example label: Ranvet Calm Paste

Ranvet’s manufacturer page provides a verifiable example of a paste label, not an endorsement or evidence that the product works. The manufacturer lists the following per 30 g:

Listed ingredient Amount per 30 g
L-tryptophan 3,000 mg
Vitamin B1 600 mg
Vitamin B2 501 mg
Vitamin B3 501 mg
Vitamin B6 300 mg
Magnesium 6,000 mg

Ranvet lists one 30 g syringe daily for horses weighing 450–550 kg, at least three hours before exercise or travel, and advises against use for more than three consecutive days before a stressful event. These are the manufacturer’s directions, not independent validation of efficacy or safety. Check the current package and consult your veterinarian before use. Check competition rules before using a supplement

A label or manufacturer claim is not competition clearance. US Equestrian says permissibility depends on ingredients and current rules. It warns that formulas and labels may change without notice, supplements are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not test them to guarantee safety, efficacy, quality, or batch consistency. It also reports positive tests traced to supplements whose labels did not warn of prohibited drugs.

If you compete under USEF, consult its current rules and guidance. US Equestrian asks users with product questions to send a photo of the ingredient list on the container they are using. Check with the governing body for your discipline and jurisdiction as well as your veterinarian; do not rely on a generic claim that a product is competition-safe.
