Buy or make hides with a smooth, durable surface, a safe entrance, enough interior room for the whole gecko, and a design you can clean thoroughly.
Why hide selection is a husbandry decision
Leopard geckos use cover to feel secure. A hide also lets the animal regulate its position in the enclosure without exposing itself. If the only shelter is on one side, the gecko may have to choose between a preferred temperature and a protected place to rest.

The RSPCA’s How To Care For a Leopard Gecko guide puts the principle plainly: “Include several hides throughout either end of the vivarium so the gecko can choose the temperature without having to compromise feeling secure.” That is why the useful question is not “Which cave looks best?” but “Does this enclosure offer covered choices in every area the gecko needs?”

Ordinary hides and a humid hide serve different purposes. Ordinary hides should stay dry and provide cover on the warm and cool ends. A humid hide is a localized moist shelter used mainly during shedding. It should not turn the entire enclosure into a humid environment.

How many hides does a leopard gecko need?
There is no single number that fits every enclosure, but a practical functional layout has three roles:

The RSPCA recommends several hides throughout both ends rather than one shelter at each end. Add more usable cover when the enclosure is large, has an awkward layout, or leaves long exposed routes between the warm and cool hides. A specialist rescue-care guide describes at least one hide in each of three enclosure regions, with the middle hide used as the humid hide. Treat that as a layout model, not a universal quota: the essential test is whether your gecko can move to the area it wants without giving up shelter.
Observe the enclosure after installation. A hide should be reachable without forcing the gecko to cross a completely exposed space, and décor should not block the entrance. If a cave is technically present but the animal cannot enter, turn around, or settle inside, it is not functioning as a hide.
What makes a good leopard gecko hide?
Enough interior space
The RSPCA’s general reptile guidance says hides should be large enough for the reptile’s whole body to fit inside. Measure the usable interior, not just the outside dimensions. The gecko should be able to enter, turn, and rest without its tail or limbs protruding through the doorway.
A hide that is too small becomes unusable as the gecko grows. A very oversized, open-feeling cave may provide less security than a closer-fitting shelter. Check the seller’s internal measurements, then compare them with your gecko’s current body length and likely adult size. Recheck after growth or weight changes.

Opaque, enclosed cover
Choose a shelter that blocks light and sight lines on most sides. A dark interior helps the gecko withdraw rather than merely stand under an ornament. Open-front decorations can supplement cover, but they should not replace an enclosed warm-side, cool-side, or humid hide.
A safe entrance
The opening needs to be large enough for the gecko’s widest point, including the tail base, while still preserving a sheltered interior. Avoid narrow slots, unstable arches, jagged molded plastic, chipped ceramic, or any edge that can scrape skin. Run a finger around every opening before use; if an edge feels sharp, do not install the hide until it has been safely smoothed.
Stability
A hide must stay put when the gecko pushes against it or burrows around its base. Heavy ceramic or thick plastic can be stable, but weight alone is not a guarantee. Check that the base sits flat and that nearby décor cannot lever it upward. Place heavy items so they cannot collapse onto the gecko if substrate is displaced.
Durable, washable material
Leopard gecko hides collect shed skin, substrate and feces. Nonporous plastic, sealed resin and glazed ceramic are generally easier to wipe and disinfect than porous or unfinished surfaces. A textured exterior can look natural, but deep crevices make routine cleaning harder. Whatever the material, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning directions and inspect it for cracks after every wash.
Humid-hide compatibility
A humid hide needs a waterproof lower section that can hold damp moss or paper towel without leaking into the enclosure. Do not assume that a cave marketed for ordinary use can safely contain moisture. Look for a base that is sealed, a substrate chamber that can be reached for replacement, and enough ventilation to prevent stagnant, permanently wet conditions.

Ordinary hides versus a humid hide
Keep the functions separate when possible. Warm- and cool-side hides should remain dry and easy to clean. The humid hide should contain the damp substrate and be the only intentionally moist shelter.

A specialist leopard-gecko care guide also recommends sphagnum moss or paper towel that is moist, not soaked. Wet substrate can leak, foul the enclosure and make it difficult to judge whether the hide is providing a controlled humid pocket.
Ambient humidity at the cool end should normally be around 30–40%, according to the RSPCA. That figure applies to the surrounding enclosure air, not to the inside of the humid hide. Do not raise humidity throughout the vivarium just because the gecko has a humid shelter.
Replace or re-moisten the humid substrate when it dries, becomes dirty or develops an odor. During shedding, check that the hide remains usable rather than flooding it. The gecko should be able to enter and leave freely, and the hide should never be placed where spilled water can soak the whole enclosure.
Commercial hides to consider
The following names appeared on a commercial product list from ReptileGearLab. They are market examples, not independently tested winners. No comparative performance test or first-hand trial established that one is safer, more durable or more effective than the others. Before buying, verify the current listing, internal dimensions, material, opening size, stability, cleaning instructions and availability.

A product name does not prove that a hide is suitable for your particular gecko. Confirm the measurements and construction yourself, especially when the listing has changed or is sold in several sizes. If the seller does not show the interior, ask for it or choose a design whose usable space is clear.
DIY hides: plastic tubs and terracotta pots
Buying a branded cave is optional. The RSPCA says a plastic tub or terracotta pot can be adapted as a reptile hide, and the RSPCA’s hide guidance specifically allows these lower-cost alternatives when sharp edges are filed or sanded smooth.
Simple dry hide
- Choose a clean, opaque container or pot large enough for the gecko’s whole body.
- Cut or select an entrance that allows easy passage without a sharp lip.
- File or sand every cut edge until it is smooth to the touch.
- Wash the item, rinse away residue and let it dry fully.
- Place it flat on the warm or cool end and check that it cannot tip when nudged.
DIY humid hide
- Use a plastic container with a waterproof base; unfinished porous material is harder to keep sanitary when continually damp.
- Create a doorway large enough for the gecko and smooth its edge completely.
- Add a thin layer of sphagnum moss or folded paper towel moistened with clean water. It should be damp, not dripping.
- Position the hide so moisture remains localized and the animal can still reach both dry temperature zones.
- Inspect the substrate every day during shedding and replace it whenever it is dirty, compressed or malodorous.
Do not use a container with residual detergent, paint flakes, exposed staples, cracked plastic or a lid that can snap shut on the gecko. A DIY hide is successful only if it meets the same standards as a commercial one: safe edges, adequate room, opacity, stability and cleanability.

- Map the enclosure. Identify the warm end, cool end and the easiest location for a separate humid shelter. Keep the three functions distinct before you shop.
- Measure the gecko and the available floor space. Record the animal’s current body size and allow for growth. Measure the footprint and height available under décor, not just the empty enclosure.
- Set a minimum specification. Require whole-body interior space, a smooth entrance, opaque cover, a stable base and a material that can be cleaned. For the humid hide, add a waterproof bottom and removable damp substrate.
- Compare the listing with the specification. Check internal dimensions, not only the product’s outside measurements. Look for photos of the entrance, underside and seams.
- Install the warm and cool hides first. Put each where the gecko can reach the desired temperature while remaining covered. Ensure the entrances are not blocked by bowls, branches or substrate piles.
- Add the humid hide. Use damp, not soaked, moss or paper towel. Place it where you can remove the substrate without dismantling the entire enclosure.
- Test stability. Gently nudge each shelter and the surrounding décor. Reposition anything that rocks, slides or could fall if the gecko digs.
- Inspect after the first day. Look for displaced substrate, moisture outside the humid hide, fresh waste inside a difficult-to-clean seam or an entrance the gecko cannot use comfortably. Correct the design rather than waiting for the problem to become routine.
Cleaning and disinfecting hides
Spot-clean feces, shed skin and soiled substrate as soon as you see them. Regular cleaning prevents waste from accumulating in corners and seams. The RSPCA recommends cleaning and disinfecting hides regularly with a reptile-safe disinfectant.

- Move the gecko to a secure temporary container if the hide must be removed for a full clean.
- Discard dirty moss or paper towel from the humid hide. Do not try to preserve visibly contaminated substrate.
- Remove loose debris with water and a dedicated brush or cloth.
- Apply a reptile-safe disinfectant according to its label, including the contact time the label specifies.
- Rinse when the product instructions require rinsing, then allow the hide to dry before returning it.
- Check seams, underside, doorway and interior for residue, cracks or sharp damage.
- Replace clean, appropriately damp humid substrate and restore the hide to its original location.
Keep cleaning tools separate from household kitchen equipment. If a hide remains stained, cracked or impossible to clean, replacing it is safer than accepting a permanently contaminated surface.

Troubleshooting common hide problems
The gecko never uses a hide
First check access: an entrance may be too small, blocked or exposed to bright light. Recheck the interior size and whether the shelter rocks. A gecko may also prefer a different location, so offer usable cover on both temperature ends rather than forcing one cave to serve the entire enclosure.
The humid hide dries out quickly
Confirm that the base is actually waterproof and that the substrate is damp rather than merely touched with a few drops. Add clean water as needed; the RSPCA advises spraying the humid hide every few days. If moisture repeatedly escapes into the enclosure, replace the container with a sealed-bottom design.
The enclosure feels humid everywhere
Remove standing water, leaking substrate and unnecessarily wet décor. Keep the moist material inside the humid hide and check the cool-end ambient humidity against the RSPCA’s normal range of around 30–40%.

Flatten the base, reduce loose substrate beneath it and move heavy décor away from edges that can be pushed. If it still moves when gently nudged, choose a wider or heavier shelter and reinstall it before allowing the gecko to use the area.
There is an unpleasant smell
Remove soiled substrate immediately, inspect hidden corners and perform a full reptile-safe disinfection. Persistent odor usually means the hide is retaining moisture or cannot be cleaned completely; replace it with a simpler, more washable design.
Mistakes to avoid
- Providing only one hide and making the gecko choose between security and temperature.
- Using a humid hide as the sole shelter or keeping every hide damp.
- Buying by exterior appearance while ignoring interior dimensions.
- Leaving sharp cut plastic, chipped ceramic or rough terracotta at an entrance.
- Using soaked moss or paper towel instead of a controlled, damp substrate.
- Placing an unstable cave under heavy décor that could shift.
- Skipping routine spot-cleaning because waste is hidden from view.
- Assuming a product marketed as “humid” automatically has a sealed base or enough room.
Bottom line
Choose hides by function: covered shelter on the warm end, covered shelter on the cool end, and a separate waterproof humid hide for damp moss or paper towel. Select a size that encloses the whole gecko, an opaque and stable design with smooth edges, and a material you can disinfect. Commercial caves such as the examples above can work when their current construction and dimensions meet those requirements; a carefully smoothed plastic tub or terracotta pot can work just as well when adapted safely.
