Best Litter Boxes for Cats That Need More Space: How to Choose the Right Fit

Choose a roomy litter box by your cat’s measurements, interior floor space, and ease of entry—not by the XL label alone.

The best litter box for a cat that prefers more space is one with enough usable interior room for that cat to turn, dig, and cover comfortably—not simply the one labeled “XL.” AAFP and ISFM guidance recommends a rectangular box about 1.5 times your cat’s length, measured from nose to the base of the tail. Start with that measurement, then check the box’s interior floor dimensions and entry height.

How large should a litter box be?

Measure your cat from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, then look for a rectangular box about 1.5 times that length. This proportional recommendation comes from the corrected AAFP/ISFM house-soiling guideline. It gives you a more useful starting point than a product’s “large” or “extra large” label.

The same guideline reports that adult cats in one study preferred a 34 × 15 inch (86 × 39 cm) box over a smaller one. That is a result from one study cited in the guideline, not a promise that every cat will prefer those dimensions.

What to compare when choosing a roomy box

Usable interior floor space

Look for interior length and width, not only the outside measurements. Thick walls, a sloped interior, or a cover can reduce the space your cat can actually use. The box should leave room for your cat to turn around, dig, and cover waste without repeatedly hitting the sides.

Entry height and wall height

Taller sides can help contain kicked litter or urine spray, but they should not make the box hard to enter. For kittens, senior cats, or cats with mobility limitations, prioritize a low entry or a lower cut-out. The 2022 ISFM/AAFP Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment Guidelines recommend a box 1.5 times the cat’s length and note that low sides—or high clear walls with a low entry—can make access easier for unwell cats.

Open or covered configuration

Do not assume a cover provides more usable room. Check the interior floor area and clearance under the lid, then consider whether your cat can turn freely inside. A roomy open tray may suit a cat better than a covered box with similar outside dimensions.

Cleaning and placement

Choose a stable container that can be washed as part of regular litter-box cleaning. Also measure the spot where you plan to put it: an oversized tray may offer better room for your cat but take up substantially more floor space. The cited veterinary guidance does not compare materials across products, so inspect any candidate’s construction and cleaning instructions.

Commercial extra-large boxes and oversized alternatives

Commercial XL box: a candidate, not a universal best

Richell describes its PAW TRAX High Wall Cat Litter Box XL as an extra-wide option for large cats, multiple-cat households, and cats that prefer a spacious box; the manufacturer says its high wall is intended to contain litter and spray. This is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent comparison or test. Before buying, confirm the current usable interior dimensions, entry height, configuration, price, and availability on the product page.

When standard pans are still too small

Veterinary guidance identifies several practical alternatives when commercial litter pans do not provide enough room: concrete mixing trays, seed trays, sweater boxes, and under-bed storage containers. VCA also describes using a storage container with a cut-out entry door for large cats. These options can provide a broad floor area, but choose one that stays stable, can be cleaned, and has an entry your cat can manage. Do not cut an entry in a way that leaves sharp edges.

A quick fit check before you buy

  1. Measure your cat from nose to the base of the tail and use about 1.5 times that length as a target for the box.
  2. Compare the box’s usable interior floor length and width; do not rely on the product label or outer dimensions alone.
  3. Check that your cat can enter comfortably, turn around, dig, and cover without contacting the sides or top.
  4. Balance wall height for litter or spray containment against easy entry, especially if your cat is young, older, unwell, or has mobility limits.
  5. Measure the intended location at home, and confirm the candidate’s current dimensions and configuration before purchase.
