Before adopting a rescue cat, ask what is known about its health, behavior and daily routine; what care has already been provided; what remains to be done; and what support the organization offers after adoption. Rescue practices differ, so get available records and any promises about pending care or support in writing.
Questions to ask the rescue before adopting
Use the conversation to understand this individual cat and this organization’s process. If something is unknown, ask the rescue to say so rather than treating missing information as a guarantee that there is no issue.
1. What is known about the cat’s medical history?
Ask for available vaccination dates and records, parasite treatment or prevention, known diagnoses, medications, prior procedures, and any recommended follow-up. Clarify which details come from records and which are based on someone’s recollection. A rescue may not have the cat’s complete history.
Cornell’s Choosing and Caring for Your New Cat recommends asking about prior vaccinations, nutrition, parasite control, and grooming. Arrange a veterinary examination soon after bringing your cat home, and ask the veterinarian what care is appropriate for this cat.

2. Has the cat been spayed or neutered?
If the procedure has not been completed, ask who is responsible, when it is expected, and whether the rescue will arrange an appointment or provide a voucher. Get any commitment and its timing in writing. Policies vary: Best Friends Animal Society describes its own practice of arranging a clinic service or voucher when an animal is too young for the procedure before going home; that is not a universal promise from rescues.
3. Is the cat microchipped, and who will update the registration?
Ask whether a chip is present, request its number, and confirm who will transfer or update the registry details after adoption. Ask for proof or records if available. The ASPCA’s shelter-responsibility guidance says adoption should transfer proof of ownership, including licenses and microchips.

4. What has the cat been like with people and other animals?
Ask for specific observations about handling, play, visitors, children, other cats, dogs, and household noise. Find out who observed the cat—a foster caregiver, volunteer, or shelter staff member—and how long they knew it. A foster’s repeated observations in a home may provide different context from a brief shelter interaction, but neither can predict every response in a new home.
Ask how the cat behaves in the situations relevant to your household, and whether there are concerns or unknowns. Cornell lists friendliness and comfort around people as useful temperament observations. The ASPCA advises using multiple information sources when behavior concerns arise; one encounter should not be treated as a complete picture.

5. What is the cat’s current routine?
Ask what food the cat eats, what litter it uses, where it tends to hide or rest, when it is active, and how it responds to grooming. Familiar food and litter can help you plan the initial transition. Food needs vary with age, activity, and health, so discuss an appropriate diet with your veterinarian rather than assuming the current food is right indefinitely.
6. What does the adoption fee include, and what care may cost extra?
Ask for an itemized account of care already provided, such as vaccinations, sterilization, microchipping, and examination, and ask what is still pending or recommended. Confirm whether any promised future service is included, who arranges it, and whether you may face additional costs. Fees and packages differ by organization; there is no single standard set of included services. The ASPCA identifies veterinary expenses as one factor that can make pet care difficult, but an organization cannot estimate your cat’s future costs from a general fee list.

7. What support is available after adoption?
Ask whom to contact about adjustment or behavior questions, what support the organization offers, and whether its written agreement includes a return or trial policy. Read the agreement before signing and make sure you understand any deadlines or conditions. Support differs: Best Friends describes phone support and care and behavior advice within its own program, but other organizations may offer different help.
8. Why might this cat fit—or not fit—my household?
Tell the rescue about your work and travel schedule, children, other pets, prior cat experience, and home setup. Ask what is known about the cat’s needs and whether those observations align with your circumstances. The ASPCA describes adoption as a dialogue intended to match adopters and animals; a useful conversation considers both the cat’s needs and what your household can reliably provide.

How to compare cats or rescue organizations
Compare the evidence and practical fit, not a breed label or a single observed behavior. These questions can help you keep the differences clear:
- Health: What is documented, what is reported but undocumented, and what is unknown?
- Behavior: Who observed the cat, in what setting, for how long, and around which people or animals?
- Household fit: How do the cat’s observed needs and routine relate to your pets, schedule, children, and home?
- Care: Which vaccinations, procedures, examinations, or other services are complete, and what remains pending?
- Costs and help: What does the fee cover, what near-term care is expected, and who can answer questions after adoption?
Organizations vary in their services and placement approaches. The ASPCA’s Adoption Tips discusses the variety of organizations, including foster-based placements, so ask the specific group how it learned about the cat and what its process includes.
Before you bring the cat home
- Collect the available records. Request vaccination and medical information, medication details, and the microchip number and registration instructions.
- Write down anything still to be done. Confirm who will arrange pending sterilization or other promised care, and when.
- Save the agreement and contact details. Keep the adoption terms, any support or return policy, and the name of the person or team to contact.
- Plan a veterinary visit. Bring the records and ask the veterinarian to review the cat’s health, diet, parasite prevention, and follow-up needs.
- Prepare a low-pressure transition. Start with familiar food and litter where practical, and give the cat places to retreat while it adjusts.
For basic setup, a scratching post is a useful optional item: Cornell notes that scratching is normal marking behavior and that most cats can be taught to use scratching posts. It can support appropriate scratching, but it is not a guarantee against scratching elsewhere.
