For hardwood floors in a pet home, separate the job into two steps: first pick up loose hair with a dry microfiber or electrostatic pad, then damp-clean with a pad and cleaner suited to your floor. This helps avoid spreading wet hair and limits moisture on wood. No cited source establishes one mop as the universal winner, so choose by hair pickup, water control, pad care and your floor finish.
How to choose a mop for pets and hardwood
Look for a mop that handles dry fur separately from damp grime, lets you control moisture, and has pads you can clean or replace. Also check your flooring maker’s care instructions: “hardwood” can include different finishes, and compatibility claims from a mop maker do not override the floor maker’s guidance.

A practical dry-then-damp routine
- Remove liquid first. If there is a wet spill, dry it before using the Bona Pet System’s purple sweeping pad.
- Pick up loose fur dry. Bona says the purple pad must remain completely dry to create and maintain its electrostatic charge. Sweep before introducing cleaner or water. Bona Pet System instructions
- Switch pads for cleaning. Use the blue-and-green deep-cleaning pad with a cleaner appropriate for your floor. Do not use the hair-pickup pad as a wet pad.
- Use minimal moisture. Lightly mist the floor with pH-neutral hardwood cleaner when that suits the flooring maker’s care directions; do not saturate the boards or leave standing water. Bona’s general microfiber guidance also says to keep the mop in contact with the floor so collected dirt stays on the pad rather than being released back onto the surface. Washable pad care varies by product
For O-Cedar’s Microfiber Cloth Mop refill, the maker permits machine or hand washing in warm water and recommends a cool, delicate machine cycle, hanging the head to dry, and avoiding bleach and fabric softener.
