The best mouse and rat toys are not one magical product. They are a changing mix of hides, nesting materials, tunnels, climbing structures, chew items, foraging challenges and, for mice, a correctly designed exercise wheel. Choose each item for the natural behavior it enables, the size and species of the animals using it, and the risks created by gaps, sharp edges, unstable parts or swallowed material.

Offer several activities at once, observe what your animals actually use, and remove anything damaged or stressful. Enrichment should give mice and rats choice: somewhere secure to retreat, something safe to investigate, opportunities to move and climb, and ways to search for food. The guide below explains which categories fit each behavior, how to introduce them and how to keep the enclosure safe over time.

What makes a good mouse or rat toy?

A toy is useful when it supports a behavior your animals are motivated to perform, not merely when it looks entertaining to a person. RSPCA Australia describes enrichment in five broad forms: foraging, social, physical, sensory and occupational. In practice, a cardboard tube can be a tunnel, a hiding place, a chew object and a food-searching puzzle at the same time.

Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) advises providing opportunities for mice to burrow, forage, nest, climb and chew or gnaw. Its mouse-care page, updated 13 January 2026, states: “Provide plenty of opportunities for your mice to exhibit their normal behaviours such as burrowing, foraging, nesting, climbing and chewing/gnawing.” That principle is also useful when planning enrichment for rats, while remembering that rats are larger and stronger and need roomier, sturdier equipment.

Use a mix rather than a single favorite

  • Security: several hides, boxes and nesting materials let an animal rest away from view.
  • Exploration: tunnels, tubes, platforms and rearranged furniture make the enclosure worth investigating.
  • Movement: climbing routes, ramps and species-appropriate wheels support active periods.
  • Oral activity: cardboard and safe untreated wood provide appropriate gnawing outlets.
  • Problem solving: scattered or hidden portions of the normal diet turn feeding into a search.

No item keeps every pet interested indefinitely. Interest varies between individuals and can change with age, health, social group and the layout of the enclosure.

Quick guide: match the toy to the behavior

Behavior to support Useful options Important checks
Hiding and resting Boxes, enclosed hides, paper nesting material Stable construction, more than one route in or out, no trap points
Burrowing and exploring Cardboard or paper tubes, appropriately sized PVC tunnels, deep nesting or digging areas Opening fits the largest animal; chewing damage does not create sharp edges
Climbing Ropes, ladders, untreated branches, ramps and platforms Secure attachment, low-risk fall height and no exposed fasteners
Chewing Cardboard, untreated wood, chew sticks and safe untreated fruit-tree branches No chemical treatment, paint or splintering; replace when worn
Foraging Scattered daily food, hidden portions of the usual diet, food placed in safe cardboard arrangements Animal can still reach water and its full ration; remove spoiled food
Running Mouse-specific exercise wheel for mice Solid running surface, suitable size, no sharp edges or gaps

Hides and nesting materials: the foundation of security

Small rodents need places where they can withdraw from light, noise and other animals. Provide multiple hides or boxes rather than one shared shelter, particularly in a group. A choice of open-sided and more enclosed spaces allows an animal to decide how much cover it wants.

What to offer

  • Plain cardboard boxes with doors cut at a size suitable for the occupants.
  • Paper-based nesting material that can be carried and rearranged.
  • Hides positioned so an animal can leave without being cornered by a cage mate.
  • Boxes at different levels only when the route and fall distance are safe.

Inspect every hide for chewed corners, collapsed roofs, exposed staples and narrowing entrances. Replace a box when damage could trap a foot, tail or head. Keep food and water accessible from the resting area; a hide should never force an animal to cross an unsafe route to drink.

Tunnels and tubes for burrowing and exploration

Tubes create a simple route between activity zones and imitate the enclosed passages mice and rats naturally investigate. Cardboard tubes, paper tubes and appropriately sized PVC tunnels are common options for small rodents. Connect several pieces only when the complete route remains ventilated and easy to escape.

Size and layout

Measure the largest animal using the tunnel, not the smallest. The opening and internal route must allow the animal to turn around without wedging. Do not block the only path to food or water with a tunnel. Place tubes on a stable surface or anchor them so a heavy rat cannot roll or collapse the arrangement.

Inspection and replacement

Chewed cardboard is useful until it becomes unsafe. Remove pieces with ragged, sharp edges, loose fibers, soaked sections or a tunnel opening that has become too small. Wash reusable plastic tunnels according to their material and dry them fully before returning them. Never use a tunnel with cracks that could pinch a toe or tail.

Climbing equipment: ropes, ladders, branches and platforms

Ropes, ladders, ramps, platforms and branches add vertical movement and let animals choose different routes. BC SPCA guidance recommends swapping items in and out to keep an enclosure interesting. Rotation is more useful than filling every available space permanently: an uncluttered route helps animals move and helps you spot injuries or damaged equipment.

Make climbing safer

  • Attach every structure so it cannot swing into a wall or detach under the animal’s weight.
  • Use platforms and ramps to break up a climb; avoid a high, unprotected drop.
  • Check rope for fraying loops that can catch toes, tails or teeth.
  • Inspect branches for splinters, rot, insects, sap and chemical treatment.
  • Keep a clear route to the floor, food and water.

Climbing items are opportunities, not tested products with guaranteed outcomes. Watch how your own animals use them, especially after rearranging the enclosure.

Chew toys and gnawing materials

Gnawing is normal and helps occupy animals that need to wear down continuously growing incisors. UK guidance for domestic small rodents says suitable gnawing opportunities should always be available. Examples include cardboard, untreated wood, chew sticks, willow items and untreated branches from safe fruit trees.

Choosing safe materials

Use plain, untreated materials with no paint, varnish, glue residue, pesticide treatment or visible mold. Remove splintering wood and replace cardboard that has become wet or contaminated. A branch collected outdoors should be from a species known to be safe and untreated; avoid anything exposed to roadside pollution or garden chemicals.

Why rubber enrichment is a poor choice

The same UK guidance says rubber enrichment should not be given to domestic small rodents because swallowed pieces can cause an intestinal blockage. A toy that becomes soft, torn or fragmentable is no longer safe, even if it was originally sold for animals. Remove it immediately rather than waiting to see whether a pet loses interest.

Foraging toys and food-searching games

Foraging does not require a complicated puzzle feeder. Hide or scatter part of the animal’s regular diet around safe areas of the enclosure so it has to search, sniff and move. SPCA New Zealand specifically describes hiding and scattering daily food as enrichment. Use the normal ration rather than adding unlimited treats, and make sure every animal can find enough.

Simple arrangements

  1. Set aside a portion of the day’s normal dry food.
  2. Scatter some pieces through clean bedding and place some in separate hides or cardboard tubes.
  3. Observe whether each animal can reach food without being chased away.
  4. Remove damp or perishable leftovers before they spoil.

You can also fold plain cardboard around a small amount of dry food, leaving openings that require searching rather than forceful pulling. Do not create a puzzle so difficult that an animal gives up or goes without its ration. Keep water in its usual location and check that bedding has not covered the bottle or bowl.

Exercise wheels: specific advice for mice

A wheel can provide valuable running exercise for mice when it is designed for them. Choose a mouse-specific model with a solid running surface, suitable dimensions for the animal and no sharp edges or gaps where feet or tails can catch. RSPCA Australia notes that solid plastic is usually safer than barred designs.

The available guidance establishes these safety principles for mice; it does not establish a numeric rat-wheel diameter or endorse a particular rat wheel. Do not transfer a mouse wheel to a rat simply because the rat can enter it. Rats need equipment that is physically large and robust enough for their bodies, and the wheel must allow a natural running posture without contact with the frame.

Wheel inspection checklist

  • Run a finger around the track and frame for burrs or sharp points.
  • Check that the running surface is continuous rather than made of separate bars.
  • Look for tail-sized or foot-sized gaps near the axle and side panels.
  • Confirm the stand or mounting cannot tip when the animal accelerates.
  • Stop using the wheel if cracks, warping or chew damage appear.

Mouse versus rat: how to adapt the same categories

The behavior categories overlap, but scale and strength do not. A tube that comfortably fits a mouse may be an entrapment risk for a rat. A light ladder or cardboard box may collapse under a group of rats. Select the largest opening, strongest attachment and most durable construction that still leaves the enclosure easy to navigate.

For mice

Prioritize several small hides, paper nesting material, narrow but freely passable tubes, low climbing routes and a mouse-appropriate solid wheel. Mice may need time to adjust to unfamiliar objects, so introduce changes gradually.

For rats

Use roomier passages, reinforced platforms and climbing equipment that can support the whole group. Check every item more often for chewing and loosened fasteners. The UK small-rodent guidance applies to rats as well as mice for points such as continual access to gnawing opportunities, replacement of damaged devices and avoidance of rubber enrichment.

How to introduce a new toy safely

  1. Inspect before entry. Check material, seams, openings, fasteners, stability and signs of treatment or contamination.
  2. Clean when appropriate. Remove dust and residues from reusable items; keep porous materials dry and discard anything that cannot be cleaned.
  3. Add one unfamiliar item. A single change makes it easier to identify the cause if an animal becomes frightened or develops a problem.
  4. Place it near a familiar route. Keep food, water and a known hide available so the animal can retreat.
  5. Observe the first sessions. Look for normal investigation, chewing and resting rather than frantic escape, freezing, repeated attempts to climb out or fighting.
  6. Remove or reposition if needed. If the item causes distress, blocks access or creates competition, take it out and try a simpler arrangement later.

RSPCA Australia cautions that mice can need time to adjust to novel experiences. A pet that ignores a new tunnel on the first day may use it after the surrounding layout becomes familiar.

Rotation, novelty and group dynamics

Novelty works best when it is predictable and moderate. UK pet-selling guidance says enrichment should stimulate natural behavior without creating welfare concerns, that damaged devices should be replaced, and that devices should be changed regularly to maintain interest. Rotate a few items at a time instead of dismantling the entire enclosure at every cleaning.

Prevent competition

  • Provide more than one hide and more than one route around a popular platform.
  • Scatter food widely enough that one dominant animal cannot guard the whole ration.
  • Watch whether a tunnel has become a dead end where a smaller animal can be cornered.
  • Remove an item that repeatedly triggers fighting, guarding or blocking.

Keep a simple rotation plan

Keep a clean set of cardboard tubes, boxes and safe chew materials available. At each routine enclosure refresh, change one or two pieces, move a platform or vary where part of the daily food is hidden. Retain at least one familiar hide and familiar nesting material so the enclosure still smells and feels recognizable.

Cleaning and replacement schedule

Cleanliness is part of toy safety. Remove soiled or damp porous items promptly. Wash reusable plastic or metal components with a suitable small-animal-safe method, rinse thoroughly and dry before use. Cardboard, paper and untreated wood generally need replacement rather than washing once heavily soiled.

Inspect every item whenever you handle it, not only on a fixed calendar. Replace immediately when you see splinters, cracks, sharp edges, torn loops, loose hardware, collapsing walls, narrowing openings or missing pieces that may have been swallowed. If an animal has chewed a material you cannot identify as safe, remove the remainder and contact a veterinarian if illness signs appear.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Filling the enclosure with too many objects

A crowded habitat can restrict movement and make falls more likely. Remove redundant pieces, keep clear travel lanes and offer a smaller selection that you can inspect properly.

Choosing by appearance alone

Bright colors, elaborate shapes and marketing terms do not prove suitability. Compare behavior supported, species and size, material, entrapment risk, cleanability, durability and the individual animal’s observed interest.

Using a barred wheel

Bars can catch feet and tails. For mice, replace it with a solid running surface and inspect the axle and side gaps. For rats, do not assume a mouse wheel is adequate; select equipment appropriate to the rat’s body size and posture.

Leaving damaged enrichment in place

Chewing is expected, but damage changes the risk. Remove and replace an item as soon as it develops splinters, sharp edges, loose strands or an opening that can trap an animal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Making food puzzles too difficult

Foraging should add activity, not reduce food intake. Start with scattered pieces and easy-to-reach hides, then increase complexity only when every animal continues to eat normally.

A practical buying checklist

Before purchasing or making any mouse or rat toy, answer these questions:

  • Which behavior does it support: hiding, nesting, burrowing, climbing, chewing, foraging or running?
  • Is it designed for the species and large enough for the biggest animal using it?
  • Are all materials untreated, non-fragmenting and unlikely to be swallowed in pieces?
  • Could a foot, tail, limb or head enter a gap and become stuck?
  • Does it have sharp edges, exposed staples, loose threads or unstable attachments?
  • Can you clean it or replace it easily after soiling or chewing?
  • Will it block food, water or an escape route, or allow one animal to guard a resource?
  • What specific signs will tell you the animal is using it comfortably?

A category is not automatically safe because it is labeled for small animals. Evaluate the actual construction, then continue inspecting it after installation.

When a toy is not enough

Persistent lethargy, sudden aggression, repetitive frantic behavior, limping, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite or unexplained weight change should not be treated as a need for more toys. Remove any questionable item and seek veterinary advice. Enrichment can support welfare, but it cannot diagnose or treat illness, pain, injury or social conflict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line: build a changing menu of safe choices

Start with several secure hides, nesting material, tunnels, a dependable chew option and a simple way to scatter the normal diet. Add climbing routes and, for mice, a solid mouse-appropriate wheel. Match every item to the animal’s size, inspect it before and after use, introduce unfamiliar objects gradually and rotate them without overwhelming the enclosure. The most effective toy is the safe option that your own mouse or rat chooses to use.
