For most shoppers, the best pet backpack carrier is the Ruffwear Hitch Hiker, which Travel + Leisure named its best overall pick after testing carriers for quality, fit, comfort and portability. The right choice still depends on your dog’s measurements, posture, ventilation needs, travel plans and the weight your own back can carry. This guide covers backpack carriers worn by people; a daypack designed for a dog to wear is a different product category.

The published rankings below are attributed to the publications that evaluated the products, not presented as universal laboratory results. Evidence is substantially stronger for dogs than for cat-specific backpacks, so cat guidance is limited to fit and safety criteria rather than a ranked cat list.

2026’s published picks at a glance

Travel + Leisure’s February 18, 2026 guide reports testing across commuting, hiking and market visits, with veterinary input. Its categories are useful starting points, but each carrier still needs a size and airline-policy check for your individual trip.

First, identify the product you actually need

A backpack carrier is worn by a person

A dog backpack carrier has shoulder straps and supports the animal inside or against the wearer’s back. Some are enclosed and allow the dog to sit or lie down; others are vertical, head-out designs. The dog’s weight is transferred to the person’s torso and hips through the carrier’s structure and straps.

A dog-worn daypack is something else

A dog-worn daypack holds the dog’s supplies while the dog walks. It is not a substitute for a carrier and should not be treated as one. Canine Cab specifically warns about this distinction; product names can be confusing, so confirm the exact function before ordering. See its explanation at Canine Cab’s dog backpack carrier guide.

How to choose a safe, comfortable carrier

1. Measure the dog before looking at colors or reviews

Weight by itself does not establish fit. Measure the dog according to the manufacturer’s current size instructions and compare every dimension the maker requests. A carrier must accommodate the dog’s body length and height in the position it will use, not merely fall below a stated weight limit.

  • Check whether your dog can sit, stand, turn or lie down as the design intends.
  • Look for enough interior room to change position; Dr. Heidi Gordon told Travel + Leisure that dogs should be able to choose positions to stay comfortable and avoid pressure sores.
  • Account for harnesses, coats or other equipment that the dog will actually wear.
  • Recheck the measurements if your dog is still growing or has gained weight.

Manufacturers can change size charts, so use the current chart for the exact model rather than relying on a retailer’s generic “small,” “medium” or “large” label.

2. Match the posture and carry style to the activity

Vertical head-out carriers can suit dogs that prefer a view and owners who want a compact, upright load. Structured enclosed backpacks provide more containment and weather protection, but they can feel warmer and may restrict movement if undersized. Open-top or tote-style designs offer easier access, yet they require especially careful escape prevention.

For a short market visit, your priorities may differ from an all-day hike. Consider whether the dog will remain inside continuously, be lifted in and out, or alternate between walking and riding. The wearer’s balance matters too: a carrier that pulls the load away from the back can become tiring even when the dog is within the advertised limit.

3. Treat ventilation as a safety requirement

Enclosed bags should have multiple ventilated mesh panels rather than a single small opening. Dr. Beverly Blinn-Knapp advised that carriers should have “a lot of mesh in the sides” to provide plenty of ventilation. Mesh also lets you monitor breathing, posture and stress without opening the carrier.

  • Inspect whether airflow panels remain open when the dog is inside.
  • Avoid covering mesh with blankets, clothing or rain covers in warm conditions.
  • Pay attention to direct sun, humid weather and heat reflected from pavement.
  • Stop and remove the dog if you see heavy panting, weakness, unusual drooling, agitation or difficulty breathing.

Ventilation does not make a carrier suitable for every temperature. A shaded, well-ventilated bag can still become dangerously hot when left in a parked vehicle; never use a carrier as a reason to leave a pet unattended in a car.

Rank #2
Little Chonk Maxine One Dog Backpack Carrier for Medium Dogs (Black)
  • PLEASE MEASURE YOUR DOG & CHECK OUR SIZE GUIDE: Max back length 14"-19'', chest girth 19"-30''. Ensure your dog fits within the sizing guidelines before purchasing.
  • DON'T GUESS YOUR DOG'S SIZE - Recommended for breeds similzar in size to Cocker Spaniels, Beagles, Shiba Inus, Mini Schnauzers and Small Terriers.
  • The Maxine One medium dog carrier includes rigid construction that is specifically designed to keep you and your Chonk’s back straighter.
  • Tubular grab handles on all four sides so you can load-in and load-out with ease. There is even a Tail Port so you can let your fur flag fly!
  • Soft reinforced neck collar, with reflective detail, attaches to your dog’s neck collar. It is made out of elastane to protect your dog’s neck movements.

4. Secure the dog without restricting breathing

An interior tether or harness connection can prevent an escape when the opening is unzipped or the dog’s head is outside. Attach it to a properly fitted harness when the manufacturer permits that configuration; do not clip a tether in a way that puts pressure on the neck or allows the dog to jump and hang.

Check every zipper, buckle, seam and opening before each outing. A curious dog can force a gap that looked secure while the carrier was empty. Security features are useful only when they are adjusted to the dog and used as directed.

5. Evaluate support for both bodies

Look for a stable base and enough padding to prevent pressure points. The dog should not slide into a corner as you walk, and the wearer should be able to keep a neutral posture. Padded shoulder straps, a sternum strap or a hip belt can improve load distribution, but their presence does not prove that the carrier is comfortable at its maximum load.

Try the empty carrier first, then add weight gradually at home. Walk on level ground before attempting stairs, uneven trails or crowds. If your shoulders, lower back or hips hurt, shorten the outing or choose a different design rather than pushing through pain.

6. Decide how long and where the carrier will be used

Use-case labels are not interchangeable. A packable model may be convenient for occasional transport but less supportive for a long hike. A carrier selected for larger dogs may be too bulky for public transit. A model marketed for airplanes may still exceed the under-seat dimensions on your itinerary.

Write down the actual scenario—vet trip, train commute, market visit, trail approach or flight—and rank the requirements for that scenario. Fit, ventilation, security and support should outrank color, novelty features or a broad “airline approved” phrase.

What the main published recommendations are best for

Ruffwear Hitch Hiker: best overall in Travel + Leisure’s guide

Travel + Leisure named the Ruffwear Hitch Hiker its best overall dog backpack carrier after evaluating quality, size, comfort and portability. That designation makes it a sensible first comparison for owners who have not settled on a specific activity. It does not remove the need to measure your dog, check the current size guidance and assess whether the posture suits your animal.

Sherpa Trek Tote 2-in-1: ventilation priority

The Sherpa Trek Tote 2-in-1 received Travel + Leisure’s best-ventilation category. Consider this type of choice when airflow is the deciding factor, especially for warm-weather errands. Compare the actual mesh area and how it sits against your dog’s body; a ventilation label cannot predict conditions inside a closed bag on a hot day.

Rank #3
FOXFOCUS Waterproof Dog Backpack Carrier for Medium Dogs Under 28 lb, Grey
  • MEASURE FIRST FOR THE RIGHT FIT: The Foxfocus dog carrier backpack measures 13.3"L x 9.4" W x 24.4 " H. Designed for dogs with a back length of 18-19.5″, chest girth up to 29", and neck size of 13-16", recommended weight: 22-28 lbs. Pro Tip: Always measure your dog’s back length, chest girth, and neck size to ensure the perfect fit
  • SAFE AND STABLE DESIGN: The Foxfocus dog backpack features a robust safety system: an Internal safety leash connects to the collar; an Adjustable belly buckle; a Double zipper closure; and Protective side buckles. 4 layers of safety protection prevent dogs from shaking excessively during mountain cycles. Built with heavy-duty buckles and zippers. Reflective strips add visibility in low-light conditions, ensuring safe and enjoyable journeys—from city commutes to outdoor adventures

Roverlund Ready-for-Adventure: airplane-oriented pick

Travel + Leisure selected the Roverlund Ready-for-Adventure as best for airplanes. Before purchasing for a flight, obtain the airline’s current pet-carrier rules and the maximum under-seat dimensions for your aircraft and fare. Acceptance can vary by airline, route and aircraft, so an editorial category or manufacturer wording is not universal approval.

Pups & Bubs Let’s Adventure Backpack Carrier: packability

This model was Travel + Leisure’s most-packable pick. Packability is valuable when the carrier must be stored between uses or carried empty during part of an outing. Check that folding or compressing it does not remove the structure, ventilation or base support your dog needs.

Little Chonk Maxine One: comfort category

Travel + Leisure named the Little Chonk Maxine One its most-comfortable carrier. Comfort is individual: compare the interior space and your dog’s ability to change position with the strap fit and load distribution for your body. Introduce any carrier at home before relying on it for a long day.

K9 Sport Sack Knavigate: larger-dog category

The K9 Sport Sack Knavigate was selected for larger dogs in Travel + Leisure’s guide. “Larger” is a category label, not permission to exceed the current manufacturer limit. Confirm your dog’s measurements, the allowed load and whether the vertical posture is appropriate for your dog’s body and temperament.

Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack: budget category

Travel + Leisure’s budget pick is the Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack. A lower price can be useful for occasional trips, but inspect ventilation, stitching, base support and closures before use. Budget status does not change the fit and safety requirements.

Other models and comparison lists worth checking

Chewy’s retailer-oriented list includes PetAmi Deluxe Backpack Dog & Cat Carrier, Frisco Expandable Dog & Cat Backpack Carrier, Ruffwear Hitch Hiker, K9 Sport Sack Air 2, EliteField Deluxe, Pet Gear I-GO Plus Traveler, Petsfit Easy-Fit, Jespet GOOPAWS, PetAmi Airline Approved Expandable and KOPEKS Deluxe. Chewy says it considers veterinary input and key buying factors, reviews customer ratings, scores products and factors popularity with its customers. Its page is a retailer snapshot rather than an independent test; availability, prices and ratings can change. When that page was captured for this guide, it displayed 4.6/5 for PetAmi Deluxe and 4.7/5 for Frisco Expandable. Check the live listings at Chewy’s dog backpack comparison before relying on those numbers.

Canine Cab identifies the K9 Sport Sack Plus 2 as a general-purpose vertical carrier and the Kurgo G-Train K9 Pack as an airline-oriented option for small dogs. It contrasts those vertical designs with the more horizontal, supportive layout associated with DJANGO. The guide also stresses that airline acceptance depends on each airline’s rules and under-seat dimensions; read its current comparison at Canine Cab.

Air travel: verify the itinerary, not just the product page

Airline policies can specify maximum exterior dimensions, weight rules, ventilation requirements and whether the carrier must fit under the seat. Those limits may differ by airline, aircraft and route. Contact the operating airline and check the current policy for your exact itinerary before buying or arriving at the airport.

  1. Measure the packed carrier, including protruding straps or frames if the airline includes them.
  2. Compare those measurements with the airline’s under-seat limit for your aircraft.
  3. Confirm whether the airline accepts a backpack format and whether the dog’s combined weight is restricted.
  4. Ask about reservations, documentation and fees directly with the airline.
  5. Practice placing the carrier under a seat-sized space at home without compressing ventilation openings.

“Airline approved” on packaging is therefore a starting claim to investigate, not a guarantee of boarding.

Acclimate your dog before the first long outing

Do not make a flight, hike or crowded event the first experience. Dr. Heidi Gordon recommends starting with “brief carries, 5 to 10 minutes,” then taking a break if the dog becomes restless. Build duration only while the dog remains relaxed and breathing normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Leave the open carrier in a familiar room and reward investigation.
  2. Feed treats or a meal near the entrance, then inside if the dog chooses to enter.
  3. Close the opening briefly while the carrier remains on the floor.
  4. Lift the empty or lightly weighted carrier for a few seconds, then set it down.
  5. Carry for five to ten minutes in a quiet area and observe posture, breathing and behavior.
  6. Increase time and environmental complexity gradually; stop for a break when the dog becomes restless.

Never force a distressed dog to continue. A dog that cannot settle, change position or breathe comfortably needs a different setup, a shorter session or veterinary advice before extended carrying.

Safety checklist for every trip

  • Confirm the dog’s current measurements against the exact model’s size chart.
  • Inspect mesh, seams, zippers, buckles, tether and base before loading.
  • Use a secure harness connection where the manufacturer allows it.
  • Keep ventilation panels unobstructed.
  • Watch for heat stress, panic, repeated escape attempts or abnormal posture.
  • Take breaks on longer outings and provide water when appropriate.
  • Do not exceed the stated load limit or carry a dog whose body cannot fit comfortably.
  • For flights, verify the operating airline’s current dimensions and pet rules.
  • Do not leave a pet unattended in a carrier inside a parked vehicle.

What about cat carrier backpacks?

“Best cat carrier backpack” is a common search question, but the available evidence here does not support an equivalent ranked list of cat-specific models. A dog-oriented ranking should not be presented as a cat recommendation. For a cat, prioritize a rigid, stable base; generous ventilation; secure, escape-resistant closures; and enough room for the cat to maintain a natural posture. Confirm species suitability and dimensions with the manufacturer and your veterinarian, particularly for nervous, brachycephalic or medically fragile cats.

For a vet visit, a carrier that opens widely and can be placed securely on a level surface may be more useful than a narrow backpack that is comfortable only while worn. Introduce it gradually at home using the same short-session approach described above. A user discussion about cat carrier backpacks appears in this Reddit question, but individual comments are not a substitute for manufacturer specifications or veterinary guidance.

Bottom line for choosing among the picks

Start with the dog’s measurements and the posture it can comfortably maintain. Use the published categories to narrow the field: Ruffwear Hitch Hiker for Travel + Leisure’s overall category, Sherpa Trek Tote 2-in-1 when ventilation leads, Roverlund Ready-for-Adventure for an airplane-oriented comparison, Pups & Bubs Let’s Adventure for packability, Little Chonk Maxine One for comfort, K9 Sport Sack Knavigate for the larger-dog category and Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack for a budget starting point. Then confirm current manufacturer limits, inspect security and airflow, and test the carrier in short sessions before committing to a long outing.
