Secure the tree, cover its water, use shatter-resistant ornaments high on the branches, skip tinsel and loose strings, hide wires and batteries, keep candles and seasonal plants inaccessible, and supervise any new decoration. “Pet-safe” lowers risk; it does not make a chewed or swallowed decoration harmless.
The guidance below draws on holiday-safety advice from the ASPCA, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, the American Humane Society, and the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine. It focuses on access control and practical setup rather than claiming that any decoration is dog-proof.

Start with the hazards dogs can reach
Dogs investigate holiday displays with their mouths, paws, and bodies. A decoration that is harmless while hanging securely can become dangerous after it falls, breaks, or is pulled from a branch. Before choosing colors or themes, assess every item for five questions:
- Could the dog reach it from the floor, furniture, or a nearby step?
- Could it shatter, splinter, or create a sharp fragment?
- Could the dog swallow it, or tear off a small part?
- Could it be pulled down and make a tree, stand, or display tip over?
- Does it contain electricity, a battery, a flame, or a plant material that can cause illness?
Place fragile or swallowable decorations above your dog’s highest realistic reach, not merely above nose level when the dog is standing. Keep furniture that provides a launch point away from the tree. A barrier can reduce access for some dogs, but it is an extra layer, not a substitute for anchoring the tree and removing reachable hazards.

Make the Christmas tree stable and inaccessible
Anchor the tree before decorating
Both the ASPCA and American Humane Society advise securing the tree so it cannot tip. Use a stable stand and an anchoring method appropriate to the tree and room, such as a discreet line attached to a sturdy wall point. Test the tree by applying gentle pressure at dog height before adding ornaments. If it moves, improve the anchoring or relocate it; do not rely on a dog avoiding it.
Block access to tree water
Keep the tree stand’s water covered or otherwise inaccessible. A dog may drink from the reservoir when it cannot reach an ordinary water bowl. Use a fitted cover or a physical barrier that leaves no gap for a muzzle or paw, and check that the cover remains in place after cleaning or refilling.
Manage fallen needles and branches
Cornell’s dog-focused holiday guidance lists tree needles among seasonal hazards. Inspect the floor around the tree every day and remove fallen material promptly. Keep pruning tools, wire ends, and discarded branches in a closed container rather than beside the tree.
Consider placement as a safety decision
Set the tree away from doorways, feeding stations, and the dog’s favorite resting route. Avoid positioning it beside a sofa, ottoman, or other object that lets the dog climb and reach higher branches. If the only practical location is busy or narrow, use fewer decorations and a more substantial barrier.
Choose ornaments that reduce breakage without implying chew-proof safety
American Humane Society recommends shatterproof ornaments placed higher on the tree. ASPCA guidance warns that broken glass or plastic ornaments can injure pets. “Shatterproof” therefore describes reduced breakage risk; it does not mean an ornament is safe to chew, safe to swallow, or impossible to break.

| Ornament choice | Primary concern | Safer use |
|---|---|---|
| Glass ornaments | Break into sharp fragments if knocked down. | Keep out of the dog’s reach, preferably in a closed display that cannot be pulled over. |
| Shatter-resistant ornaments | May still be chewed, punctured, or swallowed. | Use higher on the tree and inspect for cracks, loose caps, or detached pieces. |
| Small ornaments | Size may permit swallowing. | Use only where the dog has no access; avoid low branches entirely. |
| Ornaments with hooks, wires, or detachable parts | Parts can come loose or become a mouth or ingestion hazard. | Check every attachment and replace insecure hardware; keep dropped pieces off the floor. |
| Large, lightweight decorations | Can be pulled down even if they do not shatter. | Fasten firmly and keep them away from the outer, low branches. |
Attach ornaments securely
Replace loose metal hooks and bent hangers. Attach each ornament so a nose bump cannot dislodge it, and keep excess wire tucked into the branch rather than dangling. After decorating, walk around the tree at your dog’s eye level and look for anything that swings, glints, or hangs within reach.
Use a “safe zone” at the bottom
Leave the lowest branches undecorated or use only large, firmly attached items that the dog cannot break apart. This is a placement strategy, not a guarantee: a determined dog can still reach higher if the tree is climbable or furniture is nearby.

Skip tinsel and loose strings
Tinsel is a poor choice for homes with dogs. ASPCA, FDA, and Cornell guidance identify tinsel, garland, ribbons, and string as holiday hazards because they can be swallowed and lead to serious digestive problems. The risk remains after the main decorating session: collect strands from wrapping paper, gift bags, and opened packages immediately.
What to use instead
No single substitute is universally safe for every dog. At the material level, choose non-stringy decoration that is secured out of reach: a broad, firmly attached piece of fabric, a flat paper or felt shape fixed to a wall well above the dog, or a display inside a closed cabinet. Do not convert any of these into a dangling chew toy, and do not leave scraps, ties, or offcuts on the floor.
If your dog repeatedly tries to eat tinsel, treat that behavior as a reason to remove all similar strands rather than testing a different brand or texture. A barrier around the tree may help, but the tree and every decoration still need independent security.

Control electrical cords, batteries, and lights
Hide and protect cords
ASPCA holiday guidance warns about electrical shock from wires. Route light cords behind furniture or through a cord-management channel that the dog cannot reach. Do not leave a loop hanging at floor level, and inspect the insulation for bite marks before every use. Unplug decorations when you leave the room or when the dog is unsupervised.

Keep batteries and small components away
ASPCA also warns about burns from punctured batteries. Store spare batteries, battery compartments, remote controls, and replacement bulbs in a closed container. Secure battery-powered ornaments so the dog cannot knock them down and open the compartment. If a compartment is loose or cracked, remove the item rather than taping it and continuing to use it within reach.
Use candles only with active supervision
Keep candles out of reach and never leave an open flame unattended near a pet. A candle can be knocked over, and a curious dog can suffer burns or start a fire. An artificial LED candle removes the open flame but still contains a small battery and may be dangerous if chewed. Place it securely in an elevated or enclosed location and treat it as an electrical object, not as a risk-free replacement.
Keep seasonal plants and edible-looking decorations away
Holly, mistletoe, and poinsettia
ASPCA states that holly and mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems if ingested. It also notes that poinsettias can cause mild to moderate gastrointestinal irritation. Keep these plants, their fallen leaves, and arrangements containing them behind a closed door or in a location your dog cannot access. Do not assume a plant is safe because it is part of a traditional holiday display.
Salt-dough and homemade play-dough ornaments
The FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine advises keeping pets away from salt-dough ornaments and homemade play dough. Their food-like appearance can attract dogs, and an ornament that breaks on the floor is especially easy to investigate. Display them only in a genuinely inaccessible location, or choose a non-edible material that is securely mounted.

Other small seasonal objects
Keep snow-globe-style displays, figurines, ornament caps, hooks, and packaging pieces off the floor. Inspect a display after guests leave; dropped parts are often more accessible than the original decoration. If you cannot keep an item out of reach, do not use it in the dog’s living area.
A room-by-room setup plan
Living room
- Choose a tree location away from climbing furniture and high-traffic paths.
- Anchor the tree and cover the water reservoir.
- Route lights and cords behind furniture or inside a secured cable channel.
- Leave low branches bare and place shatter-resistant ornaments higher.
- Install a freestanding pet gate or tree barrier if it helps your dog stay away, while keeping the tree independently anchored.
Entryway and hallways
Avoid dangling garlands at head height and loose ribbons around door handles. Keep decorations clear of leash hooks and coat areas where a dog can brush against them. Secure wall-mounted items so a wagging tail or passing body cannot pull them down.
Dining and gift areas
Collect ribbon, string, tape backings, and packaging as gifts are opened. Place wrapped presents containing small objects behind a barrier or in a closed room until opening time. Do not leave edible-looking salt-dough decorations or ornament parts on a coffee table within reach.
Bedrooms and crates
Do not put battery-powered or glass decorations inside a crate or near a dog’s bed. A confined dog may chew an item that would normally be ignored. Keep the resting area free of cords, plant leaves, hooks, and fallen ornament fragments.
Use this setup checklist before your dog enters
- The tree does not wobble when gently tested at dog height.
- Tree water is covered or inaccessible.
- Glass and other breakable ornaments are out of reach.
- Low branches contain no small, detachable, or swallowable items.
- Tinsel, ribbon, string, and loose garland are absent from accessible areas.
- All cords are hidden, secured, or unplugged.
- Batteries and battery compartments cannot be reached.
- Open flames are removed or actively supervised.
- Holly, mistletoe, poinsettia, salt-dough ornaments, and fallen plant material are inaccessible.
- Floors and gift-opening areas have been checked for dropped pieces.
- A barrier, closed door, or another access-control plan is ready for periods when supervision is not possible.
Inspect the display every day
Holiday arrangements change as people walk past them, vacuum, open gifts, and refill the tree stand. Run a brief inspection each day and after visitors leave. Look for ornaments that have shifted lower, frayed cords, exposed battery compartments, fallen needles, plant leaves, and scraps of ribbon or string. Remove damaged items immediately; do not wait for a dog to show interest.

Watch the dog’s behavior as well. Repeated staring, pawing, jumping, chewing, or guarding around the tree means the current arrangement is too accessible. Increase distance, remove the tempting item, or close the room. Training can support these changes, but a command is not a physical safety barrier when the dog is unsupervised.
If your dog chews or swallows a decoration
Take the remaining material away and contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control resource promptly if your dog may have swallowed tinsel, ribbon, string, an ornament fragment, a battery, plant material, salt dough, or another questionable item. ASPCA holiday guidance specifically advises seeking help promptly rather than waiting for symptoms and lists its Animal Poison Control Center as a resource.
When you call, describe what the item was, how much may be missing, when the exposure occurred, and your dog’s size and current behavior. Keep the package, matching decoration, plant label, or a photograph available so the professional can identify the material. Do not delay because the dog appears normal; some problems are not immediately visible. Follow the veterinarian’s instructions for monitoring and examination.

How to choose between decoration options
| Decision factor | Lower-risk direction | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Breakability | Shatter-resistant materials placed high and secured. | They may still break, be chewed, or be swallowed. |
| Size | Larger pieces that cannot be detached and are kept inaccessible. | Large items can still cause injury if pulled down or broken. |
| Attachment | Firmly fastened decorations with no loose hooks or dangling ends. | Attachment can loosen during the season and needs inspection. |
| Placement | Above reach, away from furniture, or behind a closed barrier. | A gate alone does not secure a tree or make an item harmless. |
| Chew potential | Non-stringy, non-fragile decor that the dog cannot access. | No decoration should be described as universally dog-proof. |
| Power or flame | Hidden cords, inaccessible batteries, and no unattended open flame. | LED items still contain batteries and small parts. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling an ornament “pet-safe” solely because it is labeled shatterproof.
- Putting fragile ornaments low because the dog has ignored them in previous years.
- Using a tree skirt, gift box, or furniture as the only barrier to tree water.
- Leaving tinsel or ribbon on the floor after gifts are opened.
- Assuming a battery candle is safe because it has no flame.
- Placing holiday plants where a dog can pull them down or eat fallen leaves.
- Relying on supervision for an entire evening instead of creating a setup that remains safe when attention shifts.
- Waiting for vomiting, lethargy, or another symptom before calling after a suspected ingestion.
A practical, affordable decorating strategy
You do not need to replace every decoration. Start by removing the highest-consequence hazards: tinsel and loose strings, accessible glass, exposed cords and batteries, open flames, and reachable plant material. Reuse larger decorations only if they can be secured and placed beyond reach. Leave the bottom of the tree undecorated, move furniture away from it, and spend effort on anchoring and access control before buying anything new.
If you shop for replacements, “shatterproof Christmas ornaments” is the most useful category term supported by veterinary and animal-welfare guidance. Select pieces based on size, attachment, and placement, and inspect them throughout the season. A freestanding pet gate or tree barrier can be useful for a dog that approaches the display, but it should supplement—not replace—an anchored tree, covered water, inaccessible wires, and careful supervision.
